Photoshop :: Can't Ctrl-click Layers When Unlinked Mask Selected?
Oct 2, 2013
I frequently encounter this problem across numerous versions of PS (CS4 - CS6)I like to CTRL+click on my layers to select them for convenience. If in the layers panel, I have a Layer Mask selected (that is, the white border highlight is around the alpha mask thumnail) and the mask is unlinked from the layer itself (there is not a link icon bewteen the layer thumb and alpha mask thumb), the CTRL+click feature seems to be disabled.
Â
I have to relink the mask to the layer in order to restore the functionality. This occurs regardless of the order of any of the layers in question. Is this correct?
When I am using puppet warp to transform a layer with an unlinked layer mask, the layer mask does not remain in place, it is being warped along with the layer I am working on. This seems to be a bug since the normal transform tools allow the layers to be modified without affecting the mask while it is unlinked. Â Grouping the layer by itself and putting the layer mask on the group while I'm using puppet warp to transform the layer works fine and is really not that inconvenient I suppose. Â The image I am working on is a large scan of an old map with 12 pages, I'm basically trying to line up all the pages into a seamless image, and so each layer has a mask to hide the margins of each page. I really don't want to have to create a group for each layer just to have each mask stay in place while I'm adjusting the pages. I also do not want to "erase" the margins by applying the layer masks before using puppet warp.
I installed the other day Photoshop CS2.After a while working with it i wanted to select a layer but s the Ctrl+click command didn't do nothing. Anybody knows if there is another shortcut to do this?
For some reason Ctrl + Click for layer select does not work any more or should I say properly. When I use Ctrl + Click instead of going to the layer it only jumps to the folder containing that element rather than the layer it's self. Is this new with CS4 or is something not working?
i love the ctrl+click in the curve dialog in photoshop cs6 is missing  is there a shortcut to enable it or enable/disable targeted adjustament tool ?   windows 7 64bit , cs6 64bit last updates
I am helping my intern with a project. I use CS2, but he has CS3. for some reason, I cannot get ctrl+click (to select all pixels in that layer) to work on his CS3...
just starting using cs2 v9.0 and found out that the usual layer selecting by pressing ctrl and clicking on the layer did not work. it really drive me crazy. and why they change the linked layer feature, there are no longer little box to linked layers anymore.
Hi guys, I have been using CS2 since its release but I didn’t discover this small nuance until yesterday, and needless to say it unnerved me quite a bit. In PS7 I used to use a trick to achieve a certain effect in some of my designs, making a pattern or single-color image on one layer, ctrl-clicking that layer to make it a selection, and then using that selection to delete other parts of my image. I liked this method as it allowed for me to save the particular selection, and always have that layer available to go back to in case of future use. Since I haven’t done graphic work in a while (mostly digital painting at the moment) I didn’t realize this change was made, either that, or I don’t know how to achieve a similar ends using CS2 that I did with PS7. If anyone understands what I’m asking, and can offer a bit of assistance it would be much appreciated, I am doing a menu layout and design for a local day-spa and I was hoping to do something interesting with their preexisting logo.
I'm doing some photo editing of a HDR combined photoshop file. I have a layer mask of my buildings. I copied the layer, now i'd like to invert the mask so that I can immediately start fiddling with the sky.
How do I invert the layer mask? I'm in 32-bit mode right now. CS3
How can I select ALL non-transparent pixels from a layer? Â - Ctrl + click doesn't work (it seems to have a 50% tolerance - my opacity 7% and 40% pixels don't get selected);
- The magic wand tool with 0% tolerance does work (when I click on a transparent pixel it selects ALL opacity 0% pixels around it and then I just have to inverse selection), BUT my image has a lot of holes with transparent areas and selecting them one by one would be tedious.
For some reason when I make a selection using CTRL+Click it never fully matches the cutout of the layer I am mimicking. There is always trim. I've posted a picture to best describe what is happening.Â
Fig A. I've made a cutout using the background eraser. Because of this you can see how the cutout appears to be somewhat transparent around the edge.  Fig B. When placed on 50% gray the hair trim is as detailed as I wanted. It's a satisfying result.  Fig C. I now make a selected of this semi transparent cutout by cimply CTRL+Clicking the layer.  Fig D. I now duplicate the original (not cutout) and use this selection to cutout again (don't ask why) but the cutout doesn't match 100%. It's close, but it simply doesn't match. I've also tried using this selection to make a mask on the non cutout image and the edge is exactly the same.  I thought some auto anti-alias may be turned on but I can't seem to find anything. I really need a duplicate of this cutout to match precisely.
I'm working on something where I had the text conform to a curve. Now I would like to make the curve path in visible, and I was able to search for instructions on how to do that except that I'm finding them mystifying. I read "you can select a single item inside a group with Ctrl click," but when I go to the group in the layers gallery, the text and curve are treated as one item, and I see no way to separate the two.
Basically, when I go to view the layer mask by holding alt and clicking on the layer mask it doesn't function. Along with this problem, when I go to toggle my adjustment layers on and off, by holding alt and clicking on the eye symbol next to the background layer... again this doesn't work. Â Im not sure if I have accidently clicked on something that has disabled these functions or its just a bug.
as the place I work at recently upgraded their PS version to CS6 and basically rendered my Intuos 4 completely useless because of the damn Alt/Ctrl modifier, which seems to control the "drag to create a copy of the layer function" regardless of the tool you're using.  It might be specific for my region, but Alt+Ctrl or Alt Gr modifer is used in order to reach certain keystokes, such as ], [, @, so when by default the brush size function on my wacom is linked to a "[" (alt+ctrl+f windows function), my tablet completely flips out and starts sending a mix of Alt, Ctrl and Alt + Ctrl function controls instead of the [ which I'm trying to use.  Alt + w/e functions work just fine, but I can't use any modifer using the alt+ctrl+w/e combo that involves creating a symbol, even while using the keyboard. For example, I can use the alt+ctrl+z command to undo something, but if I linked my brush tool to a "§", which is invoked by calling the alt+ctrl+m windows command, it will act as a normal ctrl + m command and open the curves window.
how to use the Pen tool. Â The tut shows that I should be able to click the Mask button in order to create a trans BG. However, mine is grayed out. I cannot find a reason why that would be. I am able to use the Layer Mask under other circumstances. Â (The tut has me take an image, draw around the image to practice pulling/dragging, twisting, adding handles etc & so forth). Â I have the pen tool set to Path but the Mask doesn't become available under any of the options. Â The tut says to click Ctrl + Click on the path and then to click the Mask button. Â why the Mask is grayed out?
When moving the mouse over objects, the objects are automatically selected. Are there a way to disconnect that function, so the objects are not selected before I click the mouse?
I cannot get rid of the selected mask overlay while using the gradient tool. Pressing O doesn't have any effect, and in the toolbar, there IS a "show edit pins" option, but there is NO "show selected mask overlay" option. The mask appears to be permanently on, in blue.
If I select some objects (i.e. pipe, feature line, etc.) and right click to bring up my shortcuts, I click on SOME commands (i.e. object viewer, elevation editor, etc....respectively, the command does not progress....it forces me back to a selection box cursor and I have to reselect the object.
For example, I select a pipe, I then right click, shortcut menu pops up, I select "object viewer", and then my previous slection is not granted and it asked for a new selection (it used to always just proceed with the command), I then have to select the pipe I had previously seleted, and the command proceeds as normal.Â
not a bid deal, but it slowing down my productivity having to select these items twice. The wierd thing is that it is not like this with all of my right click short cut commands...only a few!?
I've been trying to import a XML from FCP (xml version 2), bun everytime I only get a timeline with unlinked media...
I placed the XML one directory above my media. But when I drag the XML into my library (having Store Local Copy turned on), I only get the "empty" timeline...
When I try to relink my media from the gateway, it's not relinking anything (it says, no video and audio found). Is there no way to import an XML without having to import the original media into my library? Also, no matter what kind of clip I'm importing, it always soft imports my clips, although store local copy is turned on...
Attached is a picture with the settings for my xml import (and on top the unlinked xml, which says SOFT, although, as you can see on the bottom of the screen store local copy is enabled).

I don't know what happened when i opened my autocad it looks like the image below Untitled.jpg
also if i will right click on the drawing space, nothing happens, but below or in the command window, i can, also for example i drew a line, and i want to redo, the "CTRL" function using ctrl+Z is disabled, what happened with this one?
I am trying to get a white layer with see through writing which reveals the background image underneath. (Almost like I have put a stencil over a photograph). I have discovered this is called a clipping mask.
However, I am having difficulty using a clipping mask over multiple text layers. It seems to only do it to one layer directly beneath. I do not want to merge the text layers as I want to mess about with the design a fair bit.
After checking the box, as I paint, the red color is no longer there. Â Instead, I can barely make out a very faint pink that does not appear to cover the image. It no longer paint is red.
I have closed and reopened LR and I have warm and cold booted my computer (many times). The red is gone.
Photoshop Version 13.0.1.This is not a great issue but i think this could be easily fixed by Adobe. If you want to link multiple layers in an image via right click and choose "Link layers..." it doesn't work as expected. But if you issue the link layers command in the layers palette it works. Same problem in 32bit and 64bit Version. Â System: Windows 7 x64 SP1 Photoshop-Version: 13.0.1 (x32 and x64)
