Yes, the program defaults to the location of the last file opened, but sometimes that file is gone, or I'm creating a new one from scratch, and the program looks for files in a distant place in my file structure.
Is it possible to set a default file location for opening and saving in Illustrator CS5 (and in Photoshop CS5)?

Feb 17, 2012I'm trying to set up a time lapse project at work using CS5 and extendscript. I'm getting a scratch disk full error, only when I run the script. I do need to know where PS saves the scratch disk info, as my company limits my access to computer folders, so if PS is trying to write directly to the c drive, it might be getting blocked. If I know where the info is being written, I can make sure I have access. why I'm not getting the error message when not using the script. Just a simple resize throws the error.

Apr 22, 2008I'm on an office network running photoshop. The office is set up to have roaming profiles so when a change is made to my documents and settings, each time I log in or log out, it updates the server with the changes. Additionally, when I log on to a different computer, it loads all of my documents and settings on to that computer.
The scratch disk file for photoshop last time I checked was 6GB which is enormous, and was taking forever to load whenever I log onto a new computer, as well as taking forever to up date to and from the server each time I log on to my usual computer. I delete the file each time I remember, but I don't always remember.
My question is whether it is possible to change the folder location on my C drive of the scratch disk file. I do not have an external hard drive available to use as my scratch disk. This would allow me to put it somewhere else on my C drive, and as such it would not have to update my profile.

The location of "My Pictures" is on my primary Hard Drive D:My DocumentsMy Pictures
Why is Photoshop changing all of my 37,000+ photo thumbnails to point to my Backup Drive K:?

Photoshop :: How To Change Default Search Location
Jul 30, 2012I was trying to load in some tool presets for my pen tool in Photoshop. Upon doing so I noted that clicking on "Load Tool Presets..." or alternatively any of the quick jump links i.e. art history, pencil brushes, etc... Photoshop would load absolutely nothing.
Upon looking to see where Photoshop was looking for these tool presets I noticed that it was looking here:
"C:Users*********AppDataRoamingAdobeAdobe Photoshop CS6PresetsTools" instead of looking here: E:AdobeAdobe Photoshop CS6 (64 Bit)PresetsTools --- which is where the presets are actually located.
Is there any way to change where Photoshop looks by default? How did it get set to the incorrect location in the first place.

Jan 23, 2014using mac os I need to change my scratch disc from the default "system" to an external drive.
In preferences> scratch discs it sees the hard drive i have attached...so i choose it, I click ok and get the usual warning about having to restart illustator to implement the change. problem is, when i quit, then restart illustrator, no dice. it's defaulted back to " system". I change it again. click ok. then, just to see, i re- open the preference panel. it's already gone back to " system". what gives? i've tried over and over and it just wont take.

May 19, 2012When I first installed Adobe Photoshop CS6 I was unable to run Photoshop or Bridge CS6. Photoshop would give me an error about "could not open a scratch file because the file is locked. If I ran either of these programs as an administrator they would run without issue, this led me to believe that there was a permission issue somewhere. After some digging I found out the both Bridge and Photoshop try to create a temp file (similiar to Photoshop Temp2777223910092) on the c: drive of the computer. In my case the user that I was logged in with did not have access to write to the root of the C: drive. Note that you run the program as the administrator and change the scratch disk location as that changes the preference for the administrator user and not the user that you are currently logged in as.
I first had to give the user that I was logged on with write permissions to the root of the C: drive. Next try and run Photoshop, you will get an error another error about the scratch disk and about and invalid or missing setting file. To correct this you need to have run Photoshop as an administrator, next you can go to Users AdminAppDataRoamingAdobeAdobe Photoshop CS6Adobe Photoshop CS6 Settings and copy Adobe Photoshop CS6 Prefs and/or Adobe Photoshop X64 CS6 Prefs to Users<your logged in username>AppDataRoamingAdobeAdobe Photoshop CS6.Adobe Photoshop CS6 Settings.

Dec 17, 2012my setup has 128gb ssd (C) which contains only my OS files with some junction points to Program Files/Program Files(x86)/ProgramData/Users which are located in my D drive which is a 1TB WD.
at first it showed when I tried to start PS for the first time after a clean install on a new computer I managed to get past it by runing PS as admin and changing the scratch disk to D.but now I noticed that when I try to copy a path from illustrator into photoshop as either a smart object or as pixels I get this error again. I haven't seen it again other then that but I just started using PS in this setup so I am yet to explore all the functions and whether they are working correctly or not.
when ran as an administrator the illustrator->PS transfer works fine but I don't want to run PS as admin all the time...

Feb 21, 2013We are having an issue with the xloadpath variable. We currently have a bunch of .ac$ files in the project folders on the network. We are trying to set the temp xref file location to the same folder as the temp drawing files (located on each user's hard drive).
After specifying a location for these temp files, the location is blank once the drawing is closed and opened again (which means they are in the folders on the network).
Why is this folder location resetting to default (no location given) when the drawing is closed and opened up again? Shouldn't this be the same as selecting the folder for the temp drawing files?

If I set the location to a folder in my server, the template files aren't showing up. It's like there's nothing there. I've never found this problem before. The templates are shared on the network, so it's the same for everybody. Now it's necessary to everyone copy them locally, which is not the best practice in my opinion.
