Photoshop :: CS5 - Rotation Tool Not Active
Mar 30, 2012
I am new to Photoshop and I want to learn how to realy use it to its full capacity, so I purchased a book titled Adobe Photoshop CS5 one-onone by Deke McClelland. I was going through the chapters and I came upon the use of the Rotation Tool. While following along I selected the rotation tool to rotate an image, but with teh tool selected all I got was the little circle with the line through it indicating it was not active.what may be causing this?

Using Photoshop CC, if you have a vector mask on a layer and attempt to crop the image, the vector mask shifts incorrectly after the crop is completed. The image is garbled. If I rasterize the vector mask to a standard layer mask, the crop works successfully.
I've checked to make sure that there are no numbers in the crop tool options. Nothing appears to be set incorrectly.

Using Photoshop CS5 Extended, I have an image open with the 3D Workspace.
When I click on the 3D rotation tool the red horizontal / green vertical tool does not appear.
Please see the image below, I believe this is the tool that should appear but doesn't...
Is this a setting ? Where am I going wrong ?

I've used the clone tool since Photoshop 4, and it has greatly improved. The ability to preview the effect before clicking, the addition of patch and bandied tools, etc are great. The next version is supposed to have content aware moves.
However a basic feature that is lacking is the ability to rotate the clone selection. Cloning out lines crossing edges is hard. Cloning non edged areas is relatively easy, but edges in real life often follow a curve. Now that the clone tool has a preview, it would be good if keystrokes could rotate the clone clockwise or counterclockwise to better clone along curved edges. There are workarounds with ctrl-j selections, but they are cumbersome. I'm not saying the content aware features will not be useful, but more mundane improvements are lacking.

I'm new to Lightroom - my workflow sees me crop a batch of photos one after the other. In LR every time I accept a crop and right click to move to the next photo I need to use the R key or choose the crop tool to do the same cropping to the next photo and the next and the next etc.
Is there a way to keep the crop tool active as you move through images?

I like the features built into the crop tool since CS6, but I have one major issue which I can’t seem to find any comment or resolution on. Basically, if I rotate an image using the crop tool, I find horizontal and vertical lines tend to be jagged, as if very rough anti-aliasing had been applied.
If I rotate the same image using the ruler tool, vertical and horizontal lines appear smooth and correct. They actually appear straight, not jagged. The result is I have to leave the crop tool, jump into the ruler tool, make my rotation (which is nearly always bringing a vertical or horizontal back to true), then back to the crop tool.
It first appeared in CS6, and now I’m using CC it’s just the same. Is there a fix, am I doing something wrong?

I use gimp on a laptop computer, with the usual touch sensitive pad. I am surprised there is no visual indicator anywhere in Gimp, as to whether a tool, especially a paintbrush is live or passive. It is annoying that you may think the tool is "off" only to move paintbrush to another location any leave an unwanted paint trail on your layer.
Would it be better to have the tool icon change colour or have white border, to indicate live or passive. Have I got it setup right.

In coreldraw there should be a clear appearance of tool activeness like in attachment. Besides
if any command is keystoreked then the command is displayed and in the center so that user
can understand that the command is performed....

Since Edge only has rectangles and ellipses built in as available shapes, how to I/we work with polygon shapes and active mouseover areas INSIDE of these shapes and non-active mouseover areas OUTSIDE of the shapes?
Problem/symptom: when I import a polygon, be it any file format from from Photoshop or SVG from Illustrator, a rectangular border/background (transparent) gets applied, leading to this rectangle defining the mouseover area of the shape - and not the shape itself (be it a star or whatever).
WHAT I WANT: the very shape defines the mouseover area. How do I achieve this?? See examle below:
WHAT I DON'T WANT: how is is now:

I need to do a small bit of horizon straightening on an image which I have.
Using the rotation tool is fair enough.
Under clipping I select crop to result.
In the rotation dialog i enter the angle ( -.7 )
When I click rotate, it goes through the motions of a status bar advancing (green bar), but when it is finished doing its thing the image vanishes entirely, and i'm left with what looks like a transparent background.
If in clipping, I select 'Adjust', it rotates fine but I have to crop the result manually to have the image 'square' with no transparent angled edges.
How the rotation tool works? I'm using Gimp 2.6.4 on Windows Vista.

When setting up a simple FK control curve on say the wrist for example, many times the control curve isn't exactly perpendicular to the local rotation axis of the joint movement, so when we position the control curve to be perpendicular to the joint - it has a rotational value added, but the rotational handles are lines up with the rotational handles of the joint that we want to move.
Freeze Transformations: then the control curves rotational handle go back to being skewed (out of alignment with the joints)
We want to Freeze transformations before constraining the curve, but we'd really to keep those rotations control handles to remain aligned with the joints rotational handles. This will make it an exact control when animating - grab the rotational handle of the curve, rotate it, and the joint will move exactly in the proper direction.
how to get the rotational handle of any control curve to run perpendicular to the shape after freezing transformations?

I am making a template file having title block with fields. I use this template for creating layouts and sheets using Sheet Set Manager and the fields will be updated from the data of SSM. Now i would like to add a dynamic north block to my template. The block could be rotated (i have this block in file itself) and rotation angle could be inserted. Now how can i add a custom field to SSM so that i could set a rotation angle for the project and thus every new layout or sheet created using the template has the north block rotated with the angle mentioned in SSM.
Here is the file...........

To summarize: It seems that compounding a path resets the rotation of the gradient to it's original degree of rotation.
Detailed version:
1. Create a shape.
2. Add a gradient fill. Note it's degree of rotation. Let's say it's set at 10°.
3. Now rotate the shape by any means (transform or rotate tool). Note the gradient degree of rotation has shifted the same amount as the shape was rotated (if it was rotated 50°, the gradient will show at 60°).
4. Make it a compound path.
5. Instantly the gradient shifts back to it's original degree of rotation of 10°.
It appears that when rotating a shape with a gradient, the rotation of the gradient is locked to the rotation of the shape. But when making it a compound shape it releases that lock and "remembers" it's original state. But that is only true as soon as you make it a compound path, but if you no go ahead and rotate it just a bit using the cursor (as opposed to selecting transform > rotate), the gradient will switch back to how you would expect it to rotate in the first place...
Workaround would be to make it a compound path before rotating the shape at all.

I have a North Arrow that I would love to make into a dynamic block. I would like to be able to rotate the N that represents where the north direction is. But while rotating the N around the center of a circle I would like the letter itself to stay un-rotated. It seems simple, if I rotate the letter around the axis of a circle 90 deg, I would like the letter itself to rotate -90 deg on it's own axis. Of course this is easy to do manualy, but how do i do it so that rotation 1 automaticaly triggers rotation 2?

using AutoCAD 2009 (vanilla)
I got too smart for myself today in bringing an old drawing up to current standards...Everyone seems to want their block attributes to be zero - I have blocks where the attributes are best when they match the rotations of each blocks.
I have an old drawing that was rotated (as it should be) at approx 2deg.
I used a lisp routine to global edit all the blocks that needed to be at zero. BUT for some reason (and after hundreds of blocks were corrected), I noticed I now have two blocks that should NOT have been in the set have had their attributes rotated to zero....and the attributes should be at the same rotation as their block's rotation.
Because those two blocks have a fixed tic mark, I can click on the mark to see what the block rotation is, then rotate its attribute to that rotation, but I have hundreds of blocks! One-at-a-time sucks....
Any chance there is a GLOBAL way to edit an attribute rotation to match its own block's rotation?

When you try to rescale a layer using the Rescale Tool with a layer mask active, it scales of the mask, likewise if you select the layer it will scale the layer. Can I select both the layer and layer mask and scale the layer, thus it keeps the layer mask showing the desired masked area only. As the only way I can see currently is by applying the layer mask on the layer and then you can see the layer/s below to get the scaling that is desired. But I would like to keep the layer mask active for editing after scaling.

I was recently having trouble getting my 3d features to work in photoshop. I tried re-setting everything and reinstalling the program and changing preferences and nothing worked. Finally after about 4 hours of trying to figure it out I figured out that I was working in CMYK color mode, so I changed it to RGB and that fixed it. So, if you're having trouble with this make sure you check your color mode and be sure that it is in RGB not CMYK.

I feel really dumb right now but for some reason I'm having trouble deselecting. First off, I'm talking layers and vector objects here. I know Cmd D deselects selections. But how you do deselect any layer which might currently be active? I'm working in PS CS6 for the first real time and it's like I suddenly got dumb or something.
I know you can select a blank area of the Layers Panel to do it, but my Layers Panel is full right now, so I don't even see any dead space. This is especially troubling because I'm making a lot of shape layers and if I do that while a layer is selected then I wind up making masks.

If I am working on a layer, then select a new layer to work on, then paint on that layer, then undo: the brush stroke is undone, but also the previous layer I was working on re-becomes the active layer. I want it to stay on the new layer I selected. Is there an option for this?

This is something I've always wanted, and don't know if it exists. I'd like to somehow place type in an image, and scroll down the font selections to see the font choice change in the image window (not in the font sample area of the Character Window, or Type Menu line). I know you can click on the font to see it change in the image window,
but ideally I'd like to scroll down the font list, or down arrow down it, to see the font quciky change in my image to pick a font.

If I move my cursor within 25 pixels of a transform control, it activates it. So, on smaller objects it becomes impossible to slide them. Because every time I have the mouse over the object, it is snapping to a transform handle. Thus, when I click, I am now either rotating or scaling the object.
Is there some way to limit this active area to only 3 pixels around the handle, or turn off the cursor snapping to them?
