Photoshop :: Best Preference Setting For CS5 64 Bit Extended
Jun 3, 2012
I upgraded my PC a few months back and I'm currently running the CS5 suites. A few weeks ago I started having issues with the CS5 suites freezing up and in some cases even crashing on me. I always run Illustrator, Photoshop, Indesign and bridge at the same time, as I'm constantly moving between program on any given project.
What I'd like to know, is if there's an optimum setting to use in the preferences for Photoshop 64 Bit Extended to it run more smoothly and efficiently, without the computer or program bogging down or crashing on me. Below is a list of the hardware I'm running, which I've been told is more than enough to run the CS5 suites.
Hardware & operating system:
- Windows 7 service pack 3
- EVGA X58 FTW3 motherboard
- i7 960 4-Core CPU
- GeForce GTX 470 Sli graphics card
- Corsair Extreme 24 gigs ram
- 3 TB 7200 RPM hard drive
I'm trying to set a system setting and it won't stay. I open up options, and Under User Preference, I'm checking Make New Dimensions Associate, but everytime I close out and reopen it's not checked.
Since ADM is not available in CS6, I am wondering how to add preference items to the preference panel. Though AddPreferencePanel is still available in preference suite, it is taking a dialog id as parameter and the doc refers to ADMDialogSuite, so I guess it is still there by mistake.
I am using Qt, and of course I can create my own preferences dialog, but is it possible to add it to the existing preferences dialog to provide seamless interface?
Currently I am running PhotoShop extended CS5, 64bit. in which i have my fovorite plugins (Topaz, Nik and OneOne) running perfectly.
I have upgraded to Adobe Creative Cloud and installed PhotoShop extended CS6 using Adobe Application Manager as recommended. It didn't ask me if I wanted to upgrade or do a new install for PhotoShop. So now I CS6 running with no Plug-ins. I need my plugins! LOL.
I tried pointing to additional plugins in the CS6 preference to the CS5 plugin folder. Upon Launch it gave me a whole slew of error messages saying something cant load or launch C+ runtime error or what not. It does open up, but it only gives access to Nik and Topaz. OnOne doesn't show up under filters or extensions.
So, what are my options?
Just copy the plugins from CS5 to CS6?
I dont't want to reinstall all the plugins to CS6 if I don't have to as I've auto updated them over time to current versions online, so only have installation files for my original purchases.
3D problem. When trying to initiate a 3D function in Photoshop CC all I get is the preferences dialog box. Nothing appears to be out of place in the prefs, OpenCL is active as is the GPU. My system is Windows 7, i7 6 core CPU, dual GeForce GTX590 GPUs (3gb of ram each) and 32gb of system ram. Scratch disk has more than 500gb of free space.
Is there any way to set a preference for the file-format? Each time i save a file i have to adress it's format manualy, so it would be handy if there was a way to set a preference (via the short-cut menu maybe?!) for this.
Running Photoshop CS6 Normal edition (not extended)...
Was running through my preferences and for the first time I cycled through the options using the "Next Key" and found I had a preference panel that had no field descriptor on the left and looks to be for 3D rendering.
Not sure if this applied to my version of Photoshop, if it does, why no descriptor and if it does not why would it be there? The Help file suggests this is for the Extended version of Photoshop.
Now that I have spent much time getting my preferences customized, I would like to back them up to another location in case I have to reload. Where are these files located?
I'm running OS 10.8.5 using PS CS5.1. My mac was left on overnight (not sure how relevant that is) and when opening up PS this morning it crashed with the message 'end of file encountered' 'preferences file is invalid/has been deleted'
I've read up on a few older posts about the same thing. I uninstalled/reinstalled from disk but the same thing happens.
CS6 x64 (Windows 7 SP1) keeps loosing OpenCL, requiring I trash my preferences to gte it back. This evening it happened again. I was using Bridge 6, ACR 7.1 Beta and CS6 x64 version and it happened again. Trashed the preferences and even with mutilple reboots would not recognize OpenCL. So being the curious type I did a search for the Pref's file; and found two (2) instances of CS6 x64 preferences, One in the normal place....../Roaming/Adobe/Adobe Photoshop 6/Adobe Photoshop CS6 Settings, then another instance in /Roaming/Adobe/ Adobe Photoshop CS5/Adobe Photoshop CS5 Settings. Trashed this one as well and OPen CL worked again.
Is this normal behavior to have duplicate Pref's for CS6 x64? Probably not, so what is going on? And can confirm that every now and then a duplicate will show up in the CS5 directory, not consistent, and have not yet found the trigger, but one is definitely there.
Apart from OpenCL not working when this happens, everything seems to work normally...
I can no longer read the preference menus as all the backgrounds have turned black. The text font does not show up.
I can't work out how to change the background to grey so I can read the text (or the text to grey). Problem occurred when I loaded lightroom 4, didn't correct itself when I loaded CS6
Once I transfer image files from the camera to the Organizer (PSE10), they are listed in the information panel window as having a resolution of 180. I use the printer more than the internet for these files, so I really want the resolution to be 300 or above, and would like to set a preference to that effect. I know that I can resize them individually, or by a group, but I'd like to get the resolution set properly in the first place rather than adding yet antoher setp in my post processing efforts. I am assuming that the resolution is set by PSE10 because I can't find anywhere in the camera's (Canon Powershot SX40 HS) user manual that mentions that the camera sets a resolution. Is there some way that I can adjust the resolution that PSE10 assigns the images when they are imported into the Organizer? I'm using Windows 7 with 12GB Ram.
Each time I leave photoshop elements 10 (bought on Apple Store), A windows says that I don't have the required rights and my preference are not saved. Each time I restart the program it is re-installing the effect as if it's a new install. Any change done in preference window is not taken into consideration. I understood that this is because Photoshop is trying to save on root directory, which is not possible as protected. How can I change the right or tell photoshop to save the preference file somewhere else? I use Mountain Lion.
I still have to go thought all the tools if I hit the b key and the Brush was already selected. Thought the preference of the shift key would work, but know. What preference or cache do I reset or am I missing something.
when I bought PSE 8 for Mac some years ago I found a function/preference to remove the grey background of PSE, so I always can see the desktop behind my opened images.
Now I bought PSE 10 and can´t remember the name and place of this preference. I don´t want the grey background and want to switch between PSE and the desktop just by clicking anywhere on the desktop.
using mac OS 10.6.8 with CS5 Xtnd: I don't get it! When I first began using this app (and I've spent much time swearing at it with no result) and until recently and in either normal or full size mode showing xhairs and whether I use as paint or erase the effect is always considerably less than the diameter of the tip.
What is with this? I require a tip that goes right to the edge of what is supposed to be the tip...
I'm happy with the NX version, but if I want to upgrade to XT, how do I do it? I looked on the upgrade options for XT and upgrading from NX, is not there.
I have both programs but due to CC issues with Topaz and Nik plugin issues I prefer to Edit my photos from lightroom 5 in CS6. The problem is that I don't see anywhere in preferences where I can change it.
When using an external editor (PS CS5) to edit photos from Lightroom 3, there is an inital preference to select whether to use ACR in PS to process the raw file, or to use LR. I always want to do this in PS. There's often times where I'm compositing multiple photos. I only need to open up that raw file to quickly grab a section of it to move into another file. I don't want to save the raw file as a psd, tif or whatever, just select, copy and move that section of the file and then close it.
The problem is that preference setting is only when you first set up the Lightroom, I'm not seeing it anywhere on any of the preference menus. And for some reason, it has switched to processing the raw in Lightroom. So now i'm ending up with useless psd files. That takes up space on my hard drive, takes longer to archive on to external hard drives, and is slower to open the files into PS. It may seem like a small inconvenience, but when shooting 1000s, or 10000s of images a week it adds up quickly. And to get rid of them, i have to reveal in finder, then delete, then remove from catalog in LR - which just wastes time.
Mac Pro, dual quad-core, 16gb ram, GeFOrce 8800 GT 512mb graphics card OS X Snow Leopard
LR 3.6 5d Mk II CR2 files PS CS5 (12.0.4) and also the newest prerelease (can't disclose much on this)
LR and PS are both great in their own right, and do things better than the other in some situations, I wish Adobe would make them play nicer together.
I'm wondering if any effort will ever be made to fix the issues surrounding the "Linear Working Units" preference in Maya.
There are many persistent bugs surrounding the use of this feature. Locators change size, NURBS tools go haywire, etc.
Just today I discovered another very bizarre problem. With Linear Working Units set to centimeters (the default), then ordinary, normalized NURBS curves have a U parameter space from zero to one. It's axiomatic that the U parameter is the distance along the curve, measured not in linear units, but expressed as a decimal of the total length. I.E. halfway along the path, the U Value is 0.5, regardless of the actual length of the curve.
So that all makes perfect sense. But if we change the Linear Working Units to anything other than centimeters, everything goes to hell. With Linear Working Units set to Feet, then a normalized NURBS curve has a U parameter space from zero to 0.033. This can be clearly seen if attaching a Motion Path to a NURBS curve. The keyframe at the end of the curve shows a U Value of 0.033.
Obviously, a centimeter is 0.033 of a foot. But what does that have to do with NURBS parameter space? Absolutely nothing. Changing the working units should have no effect on the readout of the U Value.
I'm hoping the developers 1) know about this, 2) care, and 3) have the freedom to do something about it. Because this is, to put it bluntly, crazy-making. I know that the Linear Working Units feature was bolted on to an existing unitless system, so there are bound to be problems. But why on earth are NURBS parametric values affected by the choice of working units?
Best practices for setting up systems in a lab environment. We have a lab enviroment of about 200 systems that access AutoCad, Inventor, Mechanical and others.
We need to have a customized interface come up when Autocad is opened by students.I have read that you can do this with profiles and workspaces and also with loading a acad.lsp file.
In the past we have just copied the Windows admin profile used to customize AutoCad to the default profile. In AutoCad 2013 that does not seem to grab everything. It doesn't seem to be the best way to do what we need.
We will also be moving to Windows 7 soon which will also cause an issue.I want to find the best way to do this with out having to deal with the Windows profile.
I live in Europe so that's PAL. But I also want to make DVD's for my family in the USA, and that is NTSC. I know I can choose to burn a DVD in PAL or NTSC at the DVD factory.
What I do NOT understand is: When I want to edit my video files I can choose for PAL or NTSC at Settings>Preferences>edit color filter. What does this setting do?
Also when I check Project Properties it always says PAL, even when I choose NTSC at Settings>Preferences>edit color filter. How I can edit video files and then burn DVD's in Pal & NTSC format without having to make separate editing for both formats.
