Paint.NET :: Un-erasing Part Of A Layer?
Jul 12, 2012
In Photoshop you can erase part of an image with the color white with the paint brush and bring it back with the black brush. I used the erase tool to remove part of an image but then wanted to bring the edges back, but with precision detail, however i don't see a way to un-erase the edges like you can in photoshop. Example I have one shot of a sky and one shot of the mountains. I layer the two images and I erase the sky in the mountain image so the sky image in the layer below comes through. However, the divide between the mountain photo and the sky photo has jagged edges and I want to paint part of the image back in with precision along the rough mountain edges.

I have a logo where I'm having trouble erasing some overlapping shapes? I'm using Illustrator CS5.
This is part of the logo: [URL]. I need to erase the white part of the hexagon that's showing through the cog and circle shapes, and I need to erase the part of the green cog that's showing through the circle. The problem is that the cog and hexagon have been made using strokes, so every time I try and use the pathfinder tool the cog inverts itself and I get odd results like this: [URL].

I have an icon and it's a circle with the outer areas deleted (transparent). I need to select only the image area (the circle) and copy it so I can add it with a paste as a layer over another image.

I am trying to make a black and white image but leave certain aspects of it in colour. I did this yesterday by applying a black and white layer and then using the eraser to get colour back. However, this no longer works for some reason. I have also tried to use the history brush tool but that doesn't work either. I'm kinda a newbie so I think I did something last time that I'm not doing this time.
Running CS3 on Mac OS X.

Using CS2 and images that were shot in RAW and have been converted to jpgs or psds.
When I create a duplicate b&w layer and try to erase over a color that is not bright (in the more neutral family, like blue eyes or faded blue colors), the bottom color layer is not showing true to its color and is instead showing as a yucky orange peach. This does not happen with brighter colors of any type - erasing to reveal them will reveal the true color.
This does not happen with my older documents that came out of my camera as jpgs. Also, no amount of changing modes, color spaces or anything like that seems to help.

I extracted an image of myself and pasted my cut out image into another background. Fine. However, when I pasted my image into the background, obviously, the bordering of my image overlaps with the background, therefore not giving it clear, overall look. So, in other words, there is like black outlining around my image which overlaps with the background and I want to erase just this "black outlining" part so that my image looks like a clear, cut out transition smoothly pasted into the background. this is my problem:
Pic 1. I have an image I want to use as a background, however the image is not complete. I need a part of pic 2 to fullfill it.
Pic 2. The colors around the object doesn't match the colors of Pic 1.
Normally it would be best to cut the object out. However in this case it wouldn't look nice (the object is mixed out (in color) with the rest of the image). If I cut out something the object won't look "proper".
My question:
How can I blend pic 2 on pic 1, using the original object from pic 2 (as it is), and at the same time blend the colors around it, so that it matches that of pic 1 / or simply remove it somehow?

Today i opened a psd file which 200 layers. Paint.net is very slow then (as all layers are flatten, pdn is missing hierarchical layers), but that is another problem.
I wanted to hide some background layers and "copy merged" a selection.
It took me 10mn to find all the backgrounds layers without this tool.
In photoshop the tool exist as a property of the "move selection" tool. Ie: you must first select the move selection tool, then select "layer" in the properties toolbar.
Any way to get that for v4 ? Will v4 be on github so we can clone and make patches ?

I'm new to Paint shop. Is it possible to clip an adjustment layer or image to just the layer below it like in Photoshop? Or maybe Paint shop calls it something else?

I would like to make a composite image with source images making up the various layers (so I can work my magic on each layer indepent of the others). The problem I have is that not all of the images I'm using are to the right scale. What I want to do is resize those layers that are too big. Here's an example...
Let's say I have 5 pictures that I want to use to make one composite image from. The main background layer will be made from an image that is, say 800x600.
Another picture (let's call this subject 1) is 600x600 and is already at the right scale if I cut out the portion I want to keep and lay it on top of the background layer.
Yet another picture (subject 2) is huge (think 2000x2000). I would like to cut out the portion I would like to use and drop it in as a new layer and then obviously re-size it down to the correct scale. I'd prefer to do this directly in the composite image I'm making on its own layer to ensure I get the size right (and without manipulating the image guess-work style before I cut/paste it in).And so on...
I've found ways to make the canvas bigger (not what I want to do)... but not anything on how to resize the images on individual layers without impacting the other layers. Is there a way to do this?

Cloning from layer to layer continues to be a problem in PP X6. Sometimes it works. Sometimes it does not work. Yes. I know what is happening but I don't like it. I can get around it but I still don't like it. How about in X7, the clone tool include a source and target dialog for the clone tool

OK I am stuck. I have created a new image. Created a new trasnparent layer and deleted the background. I pasted an exising PNG (with transparency) into the layer. All my tools do not work. I can paint onto the exsiting image but when I try to paint over transparent parts of the layer nothing is shown. There must be some simple setting I dont know about right?

I am learning to make an envelope and the tut calls for me to make little sewed rectangles around the edges which are to be colored red and blue every other rectangle.
Draw the Rectangle > Ctrl + T > Right click > Skew > and then
Ctrl + Alt + T to Duplicate > press right arrow key to move and repeat until the end of the envelope > and then
Duplicate Layer > change color from blue to red
Here is where I am lost:
I am suppose to select every other rectangle and delete them in order for the rectangles to be blue, red, blue red . How to go about doing this and I have been unable to find a solution in faq's or other posts within the forum(s). I'm not even certain how to ask the question so, that may be part of my quest denied
In Inkscape I would just ungroup them so that I could manipulate/delete them as individual shapes and then (if needed) use the rubber band to recollect them and click a regroup button. I cannot seem to find anything similar to this in PS.

I want to have my assembly parts on different layers such that part 1 is on layer 1 and part 2 on layer 2.
I know how to assign a line type and color to a part but this gets laborious. It would be far easier if I could apply an electrical layer to all components w/ an electrical property. How to do this?
I'm running 2010 standard.

I am creating a logo that is a series of six equally sized graphics, arranged in a circle and overlapping, sort of like the Olympic Circles, but in once circle rather than two lines. I want only the parts that overlap to be less opaque, so that in that one sliver, you can see both of them at the same time. I want the rest of each circular graphic to remain at 100% opacity. Each circle graphic is a separate layer. How do I do that?

I have a blue line in gimp I've been trying to get rid of. It's not part of any layer so I can't erase it, its thickness scales with zoom; and it also doesn't render in the final product, but it's irritating to look at.

Is it possible to select a part of an Image on the background layer. And when you delete it, its removed from the rest of the layers as well.
Because I'm working with a DDS image and it has mipmaps (smaller and smaller copies of the background made as seperate layers.)

how to use the marquee tool to delete the bottom 2/3rds of a rounded rectangle.
Here's what I am doing:
Clicking on the rounded rectangle and drawing it to the size I want
selecting the marquee tool and selecting the area of the rounded rectangle I want to delete.
After I selected the area with the marquee tool, I press delete and instead of the area I selected being deleted, the whole layer is deleted instead.

In a .psd-document, I'm working in many layers. Each layer has a different color. What i want to do is to be able to erase trough several layers a time with an eraser with some 'softness' and some 'opacity', and just a tiny bit of 'hardness'. The eraser should affect the upper layers more than the lower layers - ideally in an exponential-curve.
I've made a muck-up erasing manually less and less trough five layers, just to let you know visually what i want to do:
The eraser takes away a lot of the first layer, but barely touches the one lowest.

I have a shot with an item on a white background. I have selected the white background and used the background eraser to remove the white. Is there a tip to determine that I have it all erased?
Many times I complete the erasing only to find several areas I have not fully erased. The checkerboard background makes it too hard to the areas I might have missed. Is there a better way?

If i have an image that has several adjustment layers on it, is it possible to erase through all of the layers at once to reveal part of the original image. I don't want to have to flatten all of the layers first.
