Maya Modeling :: Smoothing Corners On Rounded Surface?
Apr 19, 2012Any way to fix this (Picture 1) in either at the poly or subd stage. I have experimented with bevel and can reduce it but is there a way to smooth it out completely.

View 1 RepliesI have been trying to figure out if there is a more efficient way of doing this for some time. It seems so basic but it always comes to play in my smoothing process.
For all you more experienced modelers, what is the best way to have the edges and corners stay at their 90 degree angles when smoothing while not compromising the roundness of the surface with artifacting or pinching in the corners. I find this problem when creating extrudes with sharp corners on curved/ round surfaces then smoothing them.
is there a way i can offset a face which has rounded corners. i have managed to extrude a face and by altering the offset in the channel box editor i can offset a new face and delete that.
attached image is what i am aiming for, i basically would like to create a rounded hole in each face of a polygon object, a hole with rounded edges.
I'm currently working on modelling a helmet with a little bit of detailing. I have this rim shape that curves around the back of the helmet, but there are supposed to be some hard corners near the back. Every time I try to sharpen the corners with support edges (using chamfers, using extrude with no height, adding edge loops) I always get these nasty corners. Check out the pictures. Is there any way to retain the round shape of the helmet while sharpening the corners?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a model rigged with The Setup Machine and The Face Machine and a single material is applied to each of them. Not sure if the above is relevant, but when I tested this in a clean scene with just a sphere, everything was fine.
I then select a few faces and apply a new material to those faces. I smooth the mesh and the UVs are smoothed and the different materials appear where they should be. If I set the divisions on the polySmoothFace node to 2 or more the materials seem randomly placed across the mesh. The Uvs however, are smoothed correctly. So I then have to reassign the materials to the correct faces.
If I do one smooth mesh, then another separate smooth mesh, the materials are placed correctly.
Is this a bug or do you think something is wrong with my setup?

I am having a problem with extruding faces on polygons and then smoothing them. Maya does not seem to want to keep my faces together, and instead, splits them up.
I extrude without smoothing and it looks fine, but after smoothing, everything splits up.
how i can create a rounded like tubular fonts in maya?kind of like the aspect you get when you apply the mia-roundcorners? but i would like to do it with meshes?

View 6 Replies View RelatedSo I have a lofted surface (see image below) that I created with 2 curves. I created one curve, then duplicated it, moved it down the y axis, and lofted them together forming a shell looking object.
What I want to do now is fill in the "hole" in the middle. How would I go about doing that? I've been looking around but nothing has worked.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI have used Quad Draw to create geometry on the surface of an object, this geometry and its pivot can be seen in picture 1.I then try to mirror this geometry to the other side of the object's surface using the settings shown in picture 2
I get a mirror, but not based on the pivot, but it seems the mirrored geometry wants to be attached to the original drawn polys as shown on picture 3. Could it be a bug or is this how Quad Drawn objects are intended to behave?
I have a lofted surface and would like to make a difference with another surface.
This doesn't work (Difference returns absolutely the same 2 objects instead of Object1 - Object2).
In the attached example, I would like to have a square "window" in the "wagon" shape. How can I do it ?
I've been modelling in Maya for less than a day so go easy on me!
I'm in the process of making a traffic light and have got a bit stuck on the shade around the light.
I first made a profile curve and revolved it to get a kind of cup shape. The profile curve double backs on itself so the revolve is not completely flat.
Next I projected a curve onto the side of the revolve to get the wavy shape of the light shade, and trimmed the excess off.
Now I have my lovely traffic light shape, but the ends where the revolve was trimmed are not attached. (Because I double backed the profile curve)
Is there any way I can close up this gap?
(I've attached some screenshots).
How to create such object (cell model) in Maya? Do I need to use a special script or is there any method to align small balls along the surface of a big ball (or other shape)?

I want to make my own graphics for a website. I want the tables to have rounded corners similar to the ones on the following website. (the main window that says article has a rounded left corner)
page with rounded corner
I don't want to "rip" them I want to know how to make these things on my own. I could do just a plain rounded corner with no problem it is the 3d effect that I'm interested in.
If someone could just point me to a tutorial or something like that for basic website graphics I would be grateful.
with my rounded corners looking jagged, so I must be doing something wrong. I use the rounded triangle, changed the radius and even tried smoothing the selection but they still come out rough.

View 9 Replies View RelatedI am trying to make an image have the shape like the one used on this webpage's navigation.
Initially, I thought I could acheive this by using the same technique you use for rounded borders, but since only two of the borders are round, I assumed that it could not be done this way.
So, now I'm assuming I have to use the pen tool in some way.
how or if the pen tool is even the right tool.
I am making a table with rounded corners, but i am having difficulty setting the transparency. I want the round part to be the color it should be...#9999CC and the outter part to be transparent. The problem I have is when I put this on a table, the blue part shows fine on a blue table, but the outter part shows white. When I put it on a background image the round part shows up transparent and the outter part shows up pure white. I want to get rid of the white space and have the background image be able to show on the outter part.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI might have gotten bum information: I probably should have purchased Xara Photo and Graphic Designer MX 2013 but instead I bought Web Designer 9 Premium (someone told me all of the graphics stuff is included in the web versions)
that said... I need to make rounded corners of images, from what I've been able to garner: a PNG can have rounded corners, a JPEG can not the work around is said to be to add a border to the rectangular jpeg, then round the edges of said border, then color the border the same as the web background (effectively creating round corners of an object that really has 90 right angles)
So... I load up my rectangular image... then.. what are the steps to create a border (one that will permit me to do as described above)?
The youtube tutorials I've been able to find thus far, seem to be for older versions of Xara software and/ or they include some kind of ClipView tool that apparently the Web Designer does not include
