I am using PS CC on a Mac and I noticed recently that if I set up a RAW import with such things as a crop, and then click Done rather than import the file, then the settings are retained. I presume that this is held in an xmp sidecar file, but I can't find any such file alongside my RAW file.
View 6 RepliesThe issue probably has to do with the differences in settings. I am using the 64 bit version of Windows 7.I imported a group of pictures with the XMP sidecar files generated with Lightroom v3. All the image files, a mixture of Canon Mark 5D II RAW and jpg files from my point & shoot UFO camera, imported without issue picking up all my tagging and GPS settings. When importing you are put into the Library module and from the Library module I could click on any RAW or jpg file, look at the meta data and view full screen.
I then entered the Develop module with a jpg picture selected and none of my settings made it across. The process was set to 2012. I was able to try out the new adjustments and all worked very well.I then selected a RAW file while still in the Develop module and all hell broke loose.
I got a tip window pop up, the film strip went orange, the rest of the app screen then became greyed out and then behind tip pop up a crash window containing this information appeared:

There was no other path but to have the app close after that. Now since Lightroom has left off with the RAW file in the develop module when I restart the app it starts in the develop module with that same RAW image selected and I crash before I can change to a jpg. I am probably going to have to delete and recreated the data file to use the app again
After the all this I went back and checked to see how I had the catalog settings in LR 3 set because there were no sidecar files for the jpg images. I did not have the option to write settings to jpg and tif files but did have write settings to sidecar set. So I have a bit of a mystery why I have no sidecar files for jpg files when I should have based on the way the settings were. This probably explains why I had no issues at all with them in LR 4.
I am going to get LR 4 working again and then import the same batch of pictures without any sidecar files and see if I have any issues. I will report back soon.
I've got a boatload of PSD files in Aperture with keywords and other metadata. I want to import these into LR5.
Aperture will not (AFAIK) write the metadata I have in Aperture to the files themselves since they are PSDs. But it does write to XMP files, so I exported a test batch, PSD + sidecar of same name to a folder. I go to import that folder into LR5 and it works, except no metadata.
I checked the metadata in the sidecars with a text editor; it's there.
I tried the Metadata>Read Metadata from File menu; nothing.
i just noticed that i have some images, jpg and tiff, which are shown to have SIDECAR FILES in the EXFIPTC metadata display.
These files have many dates, some more than 20 years old and shot on film and scanned on nikon slide scanner. Actually, the images in question were NEVER raw files..
i do not remember how i may have done this. i have used LR from the beginning and so i am certain that at some time i checked the wrong box.
i cannot seem to find those which have sidecar files by searching, even using ANY FILTER plug-in (although i am not certain i have used it correctly).
Can i find these sidecar files? perhaps there will be some clue as to why they are there.
i have added a sentence noting that these files were never raw files.
How do I view jpeg photos imported as sidecar files during initial import? I would like to compare my RAW adjustments with the camera's jpeg version.

View 11 Replies View RelatedI am new to Lightroom and evalutating 3.6 on a trial.I performed the following test:
1. Imported 3 pictures into Lightroom from my hard drive
2. In Lightroom, I made a keyword change to one photo (removed a keyword).
3. All three photos' Metadata icon show the arrow, indicating that there has been a change. (I only changed the keyword on one photo.)
4. I click the icon for the photo whose keyword I changed.
5. I get the message "The metadata for this photo has been changed in Lightroom. Save the changes to disk?"
6. I click "Yes".
7. The photo's Metadata icon shows an exclamation point. When you hover over the exclamation point, it shows the message "Sidecar has conflict".
I have two questions:
1. My expectation is that when I changed a keyword, or any other metadata, in LR, it will show up on the photo outside of LR. My understanding is that this is a functionality of LR. Am I wrong? (The Help files seem to indicate that this is a reasonable expectation.)
2. I am assuming, having read many posts on the forum, that the error message "Sidecar has conflict" is a bug. Am I right? (My understanding is that JPEGs don't have sidecar files, which just makes this message even more odd.)
I am on Windows 7 Home Premium (upgraded from Vista Home Premium), 32 bit.
Will the current plugins for Sigma DP1/2 RAW files work with files from the DP1/2 Merrill cameras? And if not, is Adobe developing plugins for these cameras?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm using LR 4.3, and would like to know how to determine which .dat cache files are associated with a certain folder of images. I don't know programming code, and, when I open a .dat cache file, I cannot determine which image file it goes with.
I've noticed that when I remove a folder from Lightroom, the cache files for the images in that folder remain, because the size of the cache doesn't change. I know I can flush the cache, but I don't want to have to reload tons of .dat files already present in the cache.

Recently, whenever I am uploading my photos to Lightroom 5, my photos are changing to .dng files rather than staying in the NEF file. View 2 Replies View RelatedRAW files from my D300 and my D600 look completely different. These are both NEF files, imported to Lightroom 4.2 using exactly the same import preset. I did NOTHING to either file, except that the D300 one was at 1/160 second and the D600 one was at 1/200 second, so I changed exposure on the D300 one by 1/3 stop so they would match. What I did was to shoot the D300 picture, then carefully changed the lens over to the D600 without moving anything, changed the D600 to DX mode to match the field of view and shot the same picture. The files should be essentially identical.

You will notice that the saturation on the D600 image is much higher. And it's much more yellow. The pictures were shot 2 minutes apart, from the same spot. Same lens, same camera settings.
First thing I did was to change the color temperature and tint to match: from 4150/+6 to 4200/+2. There was no visible change (I'm looking at them in compare mode in Lightroom on a calibrated monitor).
Next, I tried to change the D600 image to match the D300 one. I had to make substantial changes to both color balance and saturation of various colors, as well as contrast and black levels to get close. I'd give you absolute numbers but it varies from image to image. In this case, I had to drop the color temperature to 3500, for instance. The easiest way to do this was to use the white balance eyedropper on a grey area in the road.
I'm wondering if this is related to how LR handles the D600 NEF files. LR 4.2 says the D600 algorithm is 'preliminary'. Could this be part of it?
I just renamed all my files using Lightroom (select all; rename files)
Unfortunately, this did not rename the correponding xmp files. Since this is irrevercible, I'm now in a tight spot. I'm stuck this thousands of files with "lost" xmp files
(Also, it is very annoying that the renaming changes the file creation dates! This pretty much destroys my backup routine..)
When trying to export RAW files to TIF files I get following Warning message:

An internal error has occured: Win32 API error 2 ("The system cannot find the file specified.") when calling ShellExecuteExW from AgWorkspace.shellExecute.
This happpens in LR 4 and I never had this problem in previuos version.
I uninstalled Lightroom, because it was too slow on my computer. It put a lot of library files and directories in My pictures folder.
When I use a backup program (SyncbackSE) to backup my pictures, it starts to scan all the Lightroom library files and it takes forever (hours and counting). Even though Windows cannot find the directories (with hidden and system files shown). I want to completely delete the Lightroom directories, because now I can't backup my images anymore. It is a pain in the dark places.
When I upload NEF files to a LR catalog, they are converted to DNG images, but backed up to my external HD remain NEF. Other than copying back to the HD is there another solution

I also asked that copies be saved as DNG files. No matter what I tried, I got an error message saying that the files could not be imported. I use a Canon 5D Mark III. The only difference in today's shoot was that I used and HDSC card instead of a CF card. No other obvious changes. Clearly, this is a serious concern. What amI missing?

The message comes up: "Delete the selected master photo from disk, or just remove it from Lightroom?" I always click "from disk." The files are deleted from the Lightroom Catalog but are not deleted from the disk. I have version 5.2. However, I have had all previous versions. The problem has remained the same with all versions.
