Lightroom :: Where Are Sidecar Files
Nov 12, 2013I am using PS CC on a Mac and I noticed recently that if I set up a RAW import with such things as a crop, and then click Done rather than import the file, then the settings are retained. I presume that this is held in an xmp sidecar file, but I can't find any such file alongside my RAW file.

Jan 12, 2012The issue probably has to do with the differences in settings. I am using the 64 bit version of Windows 7.I imported a group of pictures with the XMP sidecar files generated with Lightroom v3. All the image files, a mixture of Canon Mark 5D II RAW and jpg files from my point & shoot UFO camera, imported without issue picking up all my tagging and GPS settings. When importing you are put into the Library module and from the Library module I could click on any RAW or jpg file, look at the meta data and view full screen.
I then entered the Develop module with a jpg picture selected and none of my settings made it across. The process was set to 2012. I was able to try out the new adjustments and all worked very well.I then selected a RAW file while still in the Develop module and all hell broke loose.
I got a tip window pop up, the film strip went orange, the rest of the app screen then became greyed out and then behind tip pop up a crash window containing this information appeared:

There was no other path but to have the app close after that. Now since Lightroom has left off with the RAW file in the develop module when I restart the app it starts in the develop module with that same RAW image selected and I crash before I can change to a jpg. I am probably going to have to delete and recreated the data file to use the app again
After the all this I went back and checked to see how I had the catalog settings in LR 3 set because there were no sidecar files for the jpg images. I did not have the option to write settings to jpg and tif files but did have write settings to sidecar set. So I have a bit of a mystery why I have no sidecar files for jpg files when I should have based on the way the settings were. This probably explains why I had no issues at all with them in LR 4.
I am going to get LR 4 working again and then import the same batch of pictures without any sidecar files and see if I have any issues. I will report back soon.
Lightroom :: Importing XMP Sidecar With PSD Files?
Sep 3, 2013I've got a boatload of PSD files in Aperture with keywords and other metadata. I want to import these into LR5.
Aperture will not (AFAIK) write the metadata I have in Aperture to the files themselves since they are PSDs. But it does write to XMP files, so I exported a test batch, PSD + sidecar of same name to a folder. I go to import that folder into LR5 and it works, except no metadata.
I checked the metadata in the sidecars with a text editor; it's there.
I tried the Metadata>Read Metadata from File menu; nothing.
Lightroom :: How To Locate Images With Sidecar Files
Jan 6, 2013i just noticed that i have some images, jpg and tiff, which are shown to have SIDECAR FILES in the EXFIPTC metadata display.
These files have many dates, some more than 20 years old and shot on film and scanned on nikon slide scanner. Actually, the images in question were NEVER raw files..
i do not remember how i may have done this. i have used LR from the beginning and so i am certain that at some time i checked the wrong box.
i cannot seem to find those which have sidecar files by searching, even using ANY FILTER plug-in (although i am not certain i have used it correctly).
Can i find these sidecar files? perhaps there will be some clue as to why they are there.
i have added a sentence noting that these files were never raw files.

Nov 6, 2013I have been using LR since version 2 and since upgrading to LR5 I can't find a way to view the jpeg files next to the raw file. in grid view it just shows RAW + JPEG on a single photo but I want to split them so I can see the jpeg type. I changed my preferences to 'treat jpegs as separate files' but what do I do with all the files I already imported and corrected?

May 5, 2013Frequently when I import raw Nikon files to lightroom 4 I initially see a picture with tone and white balance I really like. during this time (2 to 10 seconds) the histogram indicates that it is calculating. When the histogram is finished calculating the picture changes with bad tone (exposure, contrast ...). You can go and manually change the tone settings but it can take sometime and I would rather be able to quickly return to the picture settings that was initially presented. Is there a short cut or easier way?

Lightroom :: Sidecar File Has Conflict - Keyword Changes In LR Not Being Written To JPEGs
Jan 7, 2012I am new to Lightroom and evalutating 3.6 on a trial.I performed the following test:
1. Imported 3 pictures into Lightroom from my hard drive
2. In Lightroom, I made a keyword change to one photo (removed a keyword).
3. All three photos' Metadata icon show the arrow, indicating that there has been a change. (I only changed the keyword on one photo.)
4. I click the icon for the photo whose keyword I changed.
5. I get the message "The metadata for this photo has been changed in Lightroom. Save the changes to disk?"
6. I click "Yes".
7. The photo's Metadata icon shows an exclamation point. When you hover over the exclamation point, it shows the message "Sidecar has conflict".
I have two questions:
1. My expectation is that when I changed a keyword, or any other metadata, in LR, it will show up on the photo outside of LR. My understanding is that this is a functionality of LR. Am I wrong? (The Help files seem to indicate that this is a reasonable expectation.)
2. I am assuming, having read many posts on the forum, that the error message "Sidecar has conflict" is a bug. Am I right? (My understanding is that JPEGs don't have sidecar files, which just makes this message even more odd.)
I am on Windows 7 Home Premium (upgraded from Vista Home Premium), 32 bit.
Lightroom :: Slight Color And Quality Shift When Viewing RAW Files For First Time In Library Module
Mar 1, 2013I have been shooting RAW for a while and have notice that after I import the images and then start to view them in the Library Module I will see a slight color and quality shift - almost looks like a white balance shift but not quite. I was thinking that perhaps there was some automatic preset being applied but I don't have any presets at all.
I am shooting with a Canon 1DX as well as 7D. I have not checked to see if I get this situation with the 7D, but I know for sure that I get it with the 1DX.
Today I was reviewing some images in Bridge and decided to open one of them in Camera RAW. At that time I discovered that the camera's Image Style Settings were available, Faithful, Standard, Portrait, etc. I noticed that the images did not have one of the camera styles applied to them but rather the Adobe Standard Style. At that point from within RAW I selected one of the camera's styles and bingo thats the kind of shift I am seeing when I first view an image in LR4 Library.
So as far as I can tell the RAW images are getting the Adobe Standard style applied in LR. I have no idea if this is a default behavior of if I have done something to cause it. I'm also thinking that perhaps LR does not necessarily apply the Camera's Styles automatically even though the particular style has been set in the camera -- perhaps is not imported as part of the metadata during the import and thus defaults to the Adobe Standard.
1. Should I expect LR4 to apply the Style as set from the camera automatically or not at all?
2. Can I prevent LR from applying the Adobe Standard Style and apply no style?
3. Can I cause LR to apply the Style as set in the camera for the particular image to be appied automatically upon import?
After Effects :: Can't Import JPEG From Lightroom
Jul 30, 2013I'm attempting to import a sequence of JPEG files as a composition into After Effects. The files were exported from Lightoom (Import/File). I select the first file in sequence and select JPEG Sequence but the Import as Footage is greyed out. Only the first file is imported. I'm attempting a timelapse from files taken with GoPro Hero3.

Aug 26, 2011I'm working with PSP XI version on Windows XP machine.
I have been successfully editing many jpegs without issue, reviewing in slide show "Quick review" and doing one step correction "Quick Fix" in some cases. But now in one batch of photos whilst editing one picture an error message occurred (did not note it down) once during slide show preview; application locked; and having restarted PC / application this one file cannot be edited. Error message does not recur, Organiser tray simply shows grey box for this file.
When selecting this image in Organiser tray whole application still locks. Working with other images is fine.
Windows Explorer says that this one jpeg file is corrupt and copying and renaming does not fix.
Other preview software cannot recognise the jpeg either.

Sep 5, 2013I am transitioning to using RAW files more often. I add metadata, including GPS info, captions etc. Then invariably I need to get JPEGs to someone and have to go through the hassle of exporting the RAW as a JPEG with the metadata.
Is there a way I can get that metadata into the sorta sidecar JPEG file on my Mac without having to go through the export process?
I suppose I could designate the preference that on import the RAW and JPEG were treated as separate files; could I then just copy the metadata in? I haven't really worked with separate JPEG+RAW before. Would it happen automatically if I stacked them? Haven't really explored that.
It just seems that every time I have decided to use the RAW invariably I need the JPEG and if I don't have LR available (say I'm working on someone else's computer but accessing my own files)
