Lightroom :: 3 - Import JPEGs Only When Shooting RAW And JPEG?
Feb 6, 2012
In LR3 is there a way to import JPEG's only when I am shooting RAW + JPEG -- say in the case of being on-location and I want to create a quick slideshow without importing the large, slow RAW images? (Shooting only in JPEG is not an option -- wedding photography.)

I want to shoot tethered in studio, and shoot RAW + JPEG, but I want Lightroom to only import the JPEGS so as to improve the speed. I shoot a Canon 7D.

I'd like to import just the RAW-files from my sd-card (no jpegs). Unfortunately there is no simple way to exclude the jpegs from importing. I'm talking about importing some hundreds of photos so it's not possible to uncheck them manually. I think there has to be a way to filter the import by certain file extensions or at least sort by file extensions. Sorting by media type does not fix my problem.

I am now unable to import any Raw or jpegs images into Lightroom. I have un-installed Lightroom 4 and then re-installed Lightroom 5 and still no luck. When I hit import I get a message that says "Unble to import a file to the requested location"

When I export jpegs which I changed to "black & white" in LR 4.4, and import these exported photos into a different LR 4.4 catalog, the treatment of the imported photos changes to "color".
What can I do to keep the correct treetment?

I have a folder of all my photo's with my Sony NEX camera - which I have set to capture RAW+JPEG, so the folder contains a RAW and JPEG copy of each photo.
I've just started using Lightroom and run an import on that folder with 'Copy as DNG', discard duplicates, with the destination directory structure set to use photo dates. The source and destination folders are both on remote directories on my NAS.
After the import I expected to find lots of folders, ordered by date, containing just DNS files. However I find there are DNG and JPEG files for each photo.
My understanding is the standard previews and smart previews are stored locally with the LR catalog. So what are the JPEG files that have been created?

If I shoot RAW + JPEG, and I add EXIF data to the JPEG files outside of Lightroom, when I import the RAW + JPEG pairs will the metadata I added to the JPEG files still be there?
I'd try it myself, but I don't actually have the equipment to do this right now.

I'm attempting to import a sequence of JPEG files as a composition into After Effects. The files were exported from Lightoom (Import/File). I select the first file in sequence and select JPEG Sequence but the Import as Footage is greyed out. Only the first file is imported. I'm attempting a timelapse from files taken with GoPro Hero3.

Suddenly, after 3 months of easy use, LR5 says it can't import standard JPEG files form my Olympus OMD
because it can't read them. But iphoto has no problem and imports them easily. This just started happening out of the blue.

I want to import in LR3 a bunch of pictures, some are in JPEG, some in RAW and many in both format duplicates.
How to instruct LR to import the RAW files only if JPEG duplicates exist and to import JPEG if there is no RAW?

I have a Nikon D7100 with the card slots allocated for Raw (Slot 1) and JPEG (slot 2). When Importing I would like to convert the raw images in slot 1 to the Adobe DNG format and to have the JPEG images simply imported as JPEGs. I cannot find the correct combinations of preferences/options to make this happen. What happens today is the both images import with the second labeled as a -2 copy of the first image.

Cant find a way to import about 400 jpeg images on a DVD(not protected) into the library of VSX5.I have tried various options from the DVD or a folder on the hard drive that also contains the images. I hope to get them showing on the project as a slideshow at the end. If and when I do import them into the project they will need to be resized in the overlay track by dragging to keep the aspect ratio. There are landscape and portrait pics. Can I group them together in ie landscape order and then apply attributes to all to avoid having to do this individually, if so how

I've occasionally created some tone-mapped pictures from multiple exposure brackets using the Luminance HDR program. But when I import the jpegs exported from Luminance to Xara, their Red and Blue channels appear to get swapped.
I can fix it by using a Live Effect. But why does this happen? Is there a way to losslessly avoid this before importing to Xara? Because Live Effects impose their own resolution limitations on the image.

Imported my 25,000+ photos, all jpegs, into Organizer. 731 were listed as not imported because they were in a format PS11 did not recognise. Checked out a few of them. They can be read by Picasa and Windows Explorer. They can print to my printer. Tried to import two of the missing 731 but got same message. Should I just stay with Picasa as my Organizer?

I took many jpeg's & a few video's on my camera the other day. All jpeg's all imported OK but the video didn't. It's the same format as I have imported many times before .MTS (light) 1280 x 720). I can play the video in the camera OK. I can play the video in Windows 7 OK. When I select the clips that I want to import from PSE 10 I see the thumbnails, select those I want press the button & a few minutes it just says import failed with no explication given. I have even selected the pictures from the cards video file & tries cut & paste but nothing happens.I'm running windows 7 pro 64 bit.

I have OSX 10.7.2 loaded on my MacBook Pro. All was well prior to Lion , but now I find that my 5D will not shoot tethered on the MBP
The software recognises the camera but will not fire it remotly or download image files when the canera is fired from the camera release. My 1Dslll works just fine
My iMac still has 10.6.8 and that works fine with the 5D.
Lightroom is Version 3.5
If I can't get it to work with the 5D I'll just have to reinstall Snowy.

We shooted tethered into LR 4.3 using EOS Utility. Every attempt to shoot tethered FROM LR 4.3 has met with failure. I reread all the threads concerning this issue and found none included a solution. Is there one or has this functionality been dismissed? LR 4.3 is running on Macs with OS 10.8.2 and 10.7.5.
What we are trying to do is shoot with 5D Mark IIs tethered with EOS Utility and 5D Mark IIIs tethered with Lightroom at the same time. We have not been succesful getting the Mark IIIs to tether at all. We are trying to avoid using Sneakerware through CF cards and readers. Workflow time is critical.

I am trying to get tethered shooting to work on Lightroom 4.3, but I keep getting the "no camera detected" message. The OS detects the camera fine and I can even import images from the camera using lightroom, but tethered shooting just refuses to work. It used to work in Lightroom 3 but has stopped working since I upgraded.
Here are the details:
Computer: Windows 8, x64, i7, 16GB, all updates installed
Lightroom: v4.3 all updates installed
Camera: Canon 5DMII, latest firmware installed (v2.1.2)
USB cable etc is fine since the computer can see the camera just fine.
Canon's EOS utility lets me tether just fine
Have tried restarting computer, camera, lightroom, etc.

I am attempting to use LR (latest version) on a MacBook Pro (literally brand new) for tethered shooting from a Nikon D3s. I can get it all working but mid shoot I will get an error message about no camera connected. I have read the faq here and yes if I do restart everything I can start capturing again but thats a major disruption. I also observe (but I am new to mac so I may not be understanding what I am seeing) what appears to be another picture program attempting to start up. I shut it off and get back to LR but again I will find that the capture will stop for no apparent reason.
Is there some way to insure that there is no other picture program getting in the way of LR? Is there something else I am not doing or need to do to insure LR can reliably work in a session without constant restarts?

I use a brandnew macbook pro with lightroom 5 and a Canon 60D. I used have a windows pc with lightroom 4 and tethered shooting was working ok with this camera. Now I can start tethered capturing and use the button to make a picture. But than the process stops. Lightroom starts importing but can't finish this process. The cables are not the problem since I can use the remote capture function of Canon's software. I tried all usb ports. Than as an alternative I tried to make a watched import folder. The camera puts the pictures correctly in the folder and the auto import is turned on, but failes to move the pictures from the watched folder. I don't know why but I have the feeling these two problems are connected.

Yesterday I did a tethered portrait shoot into LR and at one point LR failed to capture some images. Therefore, after the shoot, I imported the CF-card using my card reader and ticked the "don't import suspected duplicates". Still LR imported all images and whenever it found a duplicate, instead of ignoring it, LR just renamed the file with "-2" at the end of the file name. This doesn't look right to me.
Is this a bug, should LR function like this or is there something that I've missed? Shouldn't LR at least ask me if I want to rename, overwrite or ignore? What can I do to avoid this issue in the future? First, I would like to limit this thread to hardware bottlenecks and not program efficiencies and bugs.
Background: I will be purchasing a Nikon D800 in the coming weeks and like to shoot tethered. When using tethererd shooting with my D7000 over USB2, I find the lag from taking the photo to getting it on screen as I shoot agrivating and would like to know if this slowness is solvable in hardware upgrades. The D7000 supports USB2.0 and I know the D800 has USB 3.0.
I assume that USB 2.0 is the major bottleneck in general for most camera models doing tethered shooting, so as an initial experiment I am going to try a USB 3.0 adapter in my ExpressCard slot to see what the USB difference is with my D800. The rest of my laptop is a Dell M2400 with 8 Gigs of ram, Core2 Duo T9550, and which also has a Nvidia Quadro FX370M which may not be latest and greatest, but should not be too shabby either as its a workstation platform. As for sharing the USB pathway, I am jusing a eSata external drive for image backup upon import so the USB controler is only used for the camera while connected.
What would you say the top 3 (laptop) hardware bottlenecks are for LR4 tethered shooting to imporove the time to get an image from camera to the current image displayed in LR4?

I realised too late that the two cameras my husband and I were using for a shoot were not in sync timewise (not sure what happened - they usually are), so all the photos from the event we shot are out of sync, which is causing me no end of problems. Any way to ask LR to account for the time difference so that the photos are in order, or otherwise to manually change the order (the less prefered option as will be time consuming, but better than nothing).
