Lightroom :: How To Keep Image From Moving When Cropping
Aug 14, 2012
I have been using LR for quite a while, but all of a sudden when I crop a photo, the image slides to the left or right and out of view.
In the past when I move the crop frame the photo would not move, that way I can see exactly how much of the photo I am cropping.
I have tried doing searches regarding a setting, but all I get are answers about locking the crop ratio and that is not what I need.
I need to keep the entire image in view when I slide the crop window.

I must have dreamed this but I thought I saw that LR 5 had the ability to create a cropping overlay from an image. My goal is to create a quicker way to place a date on 5x7 and wallets so that it works for both prints. I want WHCC's wallet guide as an overlay.

I am a Canon shooter but received some raw Nikon files from a fellow photographer. We've done this before and I've had no problems with his files - well, we have done this a number of times but before I used LR 4 (i.e., in LR 3 and before). With this batch, when I start cropping, the image gets stretched vertically, but is fine when I hit enter to commit the crop.

I tend to always have a few pictures in rotation that I end up cropping multiple times when I am printing. Pictures where today I need to print a 4x6 and tomorrow it's a 5x7 of the same picture, etc. I am trying to figure out a way to save the file with that cropping. Ideally there would be a way that if I also modified anything else in the image that would also show up in the other versions. I know there is Create Virtual Copy, and that could work if I could then figure out how to change the file name so it would show that it was cropped for 5x7 or whatever.

I want to select part of an image with just one layer. Say I just flattened the image and have to move one part of. I select it with the rectangular select tool. It seems intuitive that I could then just move what I selected, but when I drag the selection, the selection itself moves without moving what is inside the selection.
If I then remember to click the move tool and try to move what's in the selection (seems to work sometimes, maybe when there's multiple layers?) the entire image moves.
The only way I can move part of the image over is if I make a selection and then cut it (ctrl X) then paste it.
How am I supposed to move part of the flattened image, is there a way I can set it to default to "When I select something, I can immediately drag that selected area around."

I want to crop an image visually, by sliding the cropping bars by eye. Not by typing in a specific size. How do I do that? My cropping tool seems to be set on some dimension. I've "reset" it, tried recropping from the "original" but still when I move the top horizontal bar in the cropping tool, it automatically is moving the vertical sides. As if a preset size/dimension/ratio is applied to it. Although I didn't apply any such dimension.

In LR 4, I have created a virtual copy for the purpose of cropping, but when I crop it in Develop, the original image is getting cropped as well. Have I misunderstood something?

Image size changes when moving an image between Lightroom and CC.
I opened a .dng image in LR and then opened it in the Develop module. I clicked on Crop Overlay and then on the ‘As Shot’ drop down menu (the lock is closed) and cropped to 11 x 17 and clicked ‘Done’-.
I click Cntl-E and the image opens in CC. There I click on Image > Image Size and the Image Size is 13.288 inches by 20.533 inches.
Why does the image size change?
I believe there is a menu to control the size of the image and I've looked everywhere I can think of in LR and CC, I googled various descriptions and I checked two of Scott Kelby's books, but I just can't figure out how to keep the image a consistent size when moving between LR and CC.

How do I set my prefferences so I can move to the next image after making an adjustment without having to hold the cntrl key? I ddint have to use the cntrl key in my older versions on my PC , but 3 & 4 I do. I use a Mac at work and dont need to hold the cntrl key. I edit 4 - 5 1500 image weddings a week and every "click" slows me down, and brings me one more click to carple tunnel.

There is a tiny window which shows on an image being edited to enable you to scroll or move to different parts of the image instead of using shortcut keys. I cant find it on my screen anymore I found it very useful if i had to move through the image.

I'm evaluating Lightroom 5 during the 30 day trial and it's all cool except for this one big annoyance that I noticed immediately when trying to work on an image in Develop module. As stated in the title, moving any slider (exposure, highlights, noise reduction, etc.) causes the image to go very blurry for the duration of the slider movement. It goes immediately back to being sharp as soon as I stop moving the slider. This is super annoying, feels as though my eyes are going bad.
What's interesting is that the problem doesn't show up when I'm adjusting the Tone Curve directly, but it will get triggered if I'll expand and use the sliders underneath. So looks like a bug that only applies to sliders.
This doesn't happen at all in Lightroom 4.4, which I still have installed and can compare side-by-side.
As for the hardware, I'm using the 2013 Macbook Air with 1.3 GHz i5 CPU and 8 GB of RAM. The OS X version is 10.8.4 with all latest upgrades installed.
I've already tried optimizing the catalog, giving it more space (currently at 3 GB) and purging it. I'm not using Smart Previews, although I've turned them on for a moment to see if the problem persists with them on - it does. I've also re-rendered the 1:1 preview for the specific image I've been trying it on. Btw, the file is a NEF from Nikon D300 and I'm using the 2012 process (as was the case with LR4). Not sure what else might be relevant here.

I'm going to move my image library, catalog and ACR cache to an external drive so that I can work with a consistent set of files and edits on multiple computers. I know what I need to do to move the catalog, and I know how to move the image files to the new drive so that LR is aware of the move.
But what I'd really like to do is copy the image files to the new drive while leaving the existing images on the internal drive as a backup. As far as I can tell, LR doesn't support copying of images within the program. If I copy the files outside of LR, without deleting the originals, LR is going to conitinue to point to the orignal files on the internal disk.
So, if I right click on a folder in the Library module folder tree, there's an option to Update Folder Location, and this seems to do what I need it to do, although I've only tried it on a single folder. Will Update Folder Location work to relink an entire folder tree in one operation?
One related question: Where does LR store it's preferences? One of the catalog specific preferences is Standard Preview Size. My desktop has much higher res monitors than my laptop, so if this setting is stored in the catalog then I'll have to pick one value for both computers. I'm thinking it would be better to use the larger value, for the desktop, but I'm not sure how that will play on the laptop. (It would be nice if this were computer specific, rather than catalog specific.)

If I may, I'd like to know the answer to this. For my own edification....
I have an image that is 16 x 24 inches. It has a certain file size.
When I crop the image with the cropping tool, and set the tool to 16 inches wide by 24 inches high, the image file size increases significantly.
Is this what is called "resampling?" The setting in the image size is set for Bicubic (for smooth gradients).
As an example, I saved the file (from a RAW conversion to jpg), and it was 14 Mb. When I cropped it, it jumped to 19 Mb.

This example is in 1024 x 768
I have this picture and i want to crop out certain area of the image. is it me or is it the crop tool that cannot do a free resizing, like the FREE TRANSFORM TOOL (CTRL+T).. From what i see, i can only edit the croping picture by clicking the Perspective check box. Is it normal ? Another problem is that the picture instead of resizing to the size of the croped measurements, it takes the original 1024 x 768 length and width and fills up that size.. in other words the cropped imaged maxmise itself to fit the whole original size pic.. i was quite sure this didnt happen when i was using Photoshop 7..

Is it possible to use the crop tool but have an image fill overlay instead of a grid overlay? I do a lot of photo editing where the image has to be in certain boundaries but also has a complicated background, and I'd like to reduce a step.

I have a psd with 15 layers inside. All the layers are icons and some of these have a bit of whitespace and I wanted to crop each icon to clean it up.
I tried to select the layer and use the rectangular marquee and then hitting crop. All this does is crop the entire psd.
There should be a way to do what I'm trying to do without having to copy the actua layer into a new doc crop there then add it back in am I right?

My camera (Canon HV30) captures a larger image than what displays in the viewfinder. So after downloading the footage, I realized that there was some clutter around the edges I didn't see in camera.
I've been trying to find a way to "crop" the image to get rid of the clutter. I don't want the overall size reduced, just the image zoomed in to fill the frame without clutter.

Two times in the last 15 minutes Photoshop CS has caused my Mac to crash.
It happens when I try to crop an image. I am trying to crop a .tif using the crop tool constrained to the proportion of 720x480 at 300ppi.
A few weeks ago Photoshop CS was telling me that my scratch disks were full and wouldn't allow me to crop. I checked the scratch disk designation in the preferences of Photoshop CS and it was totally fine... 27 gigs of room, which should be MORE than enough.

Just installed Elements 11 on a new Asus ET2300 all-in-one with Windows 8. Resolution is set at a recommended 1920x1080. I opened a jpeg in Elements and cropped the image to a square, but when I hit Print, what I see on the print set-up screen (and what actually prints) is an image with a good part of the top and bottom missing (although there is also a small image in the upper left corner that looks intact). I tried setting the computer resolution to 1600x900 and the image was severely cropped on the sides. If I choose one of the other resolution options, I guess that I might get a square or something close to it, but I assume that will effect my results in viewing venues.

My designer wants a retainer of $3,000 but I can do most of my own stuff in Photoshop. Sometimes I get stumped though, and just need a 30 second tutorial. So I am coming here.
how to change it from a square image to one with a rounded top and bottom-right corner. Also a 2 pixel shadow going up the right side and along the bottom. I can manually draw in those two pixels easily enough. But the corners look terrible when I try to manually do it.
I have been cropping the new image to the proper size, and then drawing in the two pixel fade on the side and bottom. Then trying to pixel by pixel create the rounded edges.
Before you say "Its a drop shadow!" please remember, in order for me to copy that exact drop shadow, I would need to know all their settings, colors, pixel widths, etc. All I have is a flat, finished image, so I have none of that information. Plus, I don't know how to do a drop shadow on a curved corner, which deletes the original squared corner on the image.

Is there a way to view the preview size of an image while cropping, meaning while the marching ants are around the selection, can I see the image size?
2nd Question:
Can I preset a cropped size and drag it around until I find the area I want to select to crop?
I do have rulers showing and use them as guides, but this is not detailed enough, at this point.
