Lightroom :: Existing DNGs Affected By Newer RAW-Algorithm?
May 22, 2013
I'm thinking about switching to the DNG-Format for the RAW-Files taken with the Fuji X-E1.
When the initial RAW-Conversion for this file type was recently replaced by a much better one, my RAW-Files were automatically updated. I wonder if this would also have happened if I had saved my RAWs under the DNG-format.
Or, in other words, does a DNG include all the data from the original RAW allowing it to be reprocessed when a better technology is available ?

Well to all those who simply could not accept that there was something wrong with Lightroom 4, take a look at Lightroom 5 beta. It simply ROCKETS along on my machine. The way it works is exactly how LR 4 should have worked. The fact Adobe have released 5 beta so quickly tells me they were simply generating revenue, as this release, and the new tools in it, is really what LR 4 should have been.
Anyway, I imported about 4,000 images and made it into a catalogue to test the beta. The best tool is the healing brush, fantastic! However when I made a new catalog and imported all of it's 37,000 images, there was a significant slowdown. I remember a couple of years ago with v3.6 asking if catalog size affected performance and was assured it didn't. Well my simple test shows it does, although there could be a different reason.
As an aside, you can't use a v4 catalog they say so I had to make a new one. Presets etc work fine, but in my v4 catalog I have a lot of images flagged, and some in smart collections. Is there any easy way to replicate these?

I am relocating the masters from aperture and importing the files into Lightroom. While I'm doing this, I am converting the NEF files to DNG's.
The questions are, firstly, I thought the DNG's were to replace the NEF files at import? And second, if this is not the case, does that mean that I then have to delete the NEF files as I dont want to use double the disk space"

I am getting really frustrated as all of a sudden Lightroom has started opening the original DNG files for editing in Photoshop (CS5) instead of creating a TIFF file and editing that. I have checked all my settings and it still specifies TIFF as the edited file, it just doesn't work. I have tried restarting everything (computer, LR, PS) and every once in a while it will use a TIFF file, but 99 times out of a 100 it opens the DNG itself. The only think that has changed recently is that I updated to LR 4.1 RC 2 (previously had RC 1) - although I think it still worked after this update. Then I updated Adobe Camera Raw to 6.7.

Is there a way to tell whether a DNG is the result of converting a cr2/nef vs. jpeg or tiff? I seem to remember an "original file" field in the metadata in the past.

Set-up- LR4, LR3, Bridge and PS4 and Elements 10 on a MacBook Pro (OS 10.6.8), calibrated 24” HP ips monitor
Problem : The corrections made on my DNGs in LR4 are not being acquired by BridgePS4 or Elements 10. The neither the images in the filmstrip nor the DNG file when opened in PS4 or Elements Camera Raw reflect the LR4 corrections. Puzzling, since the Cropping and Corrections Applied Indicators are shown with the Bridge filmstrip images. And, when I re-Save Bridge does acknowledge that it is doing new thumbnail extractions .
I’ve done all I’m aware to do.Save in LR4 in Library Mode with filters off. Did an Update DNG previews and metedata. Automatically write changes to XMP is ON. Restarted the machine
To troubleshoot, I brought a few of those images( again DNGs) into LR3, did corrections and saved. These images were rendered properly in Bridge’s filmstrip and corrections were carried into Camera Raw without issue.

Is it using the same choices as Photoshop (Bicubic Smoother for enlarging, Bicubic Sharper for downsizing)? There are times when I prefer to use Smoother even when downsizing, as the Sharper algorithm results in over-sharpening (to my taste), but there does not seem to be a way to choose a specific one. Are there any workarounds for the lack of choices in the Export module?

i have a shot in an office where i have a subject walking in front of some really bright windows. i added an adjustment layer and made 6 mask squares over the windows and brought down the brightness a bit. of course when the subject walks in front of those windows you can see the shaded mask on him.
im not sure what you call it but what do i do to him to keep the mask from showing on him?
not sure if i should make another thread but ill ask this as well in here...in the same shot because of the bright windows originally the rest of the scene inside the office is dark. how do i brighten the rest of the scene without affecting the windows? i tried duplicating the adjustment layer with the 6 masks and inverting them so i can brighten everything but windows but no matter what i did i couldnt get it to work.

My Panasonic GK2 creates raw files as RW2. I use (on my Mac) LightRoom 3.6 to import, convert to DNG and develop the files.
Photoshop CS4 Camera Raw 5.0 for Mac had been processing these without a problem. As of about 30 h. ago, it appears that my system no longer recognizes this format. DNG's from my Panasonic camera are greyed-out in Finder. In Adobe Bridge CS4 preview pane they are displayed with the DNG icon.
if update for Camera Raw is available, and if you think that might solve thie issue.
OTOH, believe I now have a viable work-around: after editing in LightRoom, export to PSD for further exiting in PS-CS4.

When I use liquify under CS6 (not previous versions of Photoshop), the affected area (as defined by a bounding box) appears to be strangely faded if it had any alpha on it.
Example: I make a smooth gradiant from full-alpha black to nothing. I then use liquify to make squiggles in the lower right. The result: a rectangular area defined by the squiggles is visibly lighter than the surrounding region.

Seems to work fine if (but only if) the whole image is fully opaque.

I scanned some old pictures at 600 dpi. Using a Canon CanoScan LiDE 700F and PSPPX3 Ultimate.
I had to take the bmp images out of the temp folder last night since I need to shut my computer down. The bmp files were the scans, but not exported yet. They open in image viewing programs, but they are not cropped or anything.
I wanted to export them as tif and jpeg files. Then I'd edit some. I was wondering if this weird dpi number they now have at 599 instead of 600 will be a problem. Could an image viewer, editor or editing, etc maybe have issues? Or dpi being moved, rotated, effects applied, etc would be a problem? What about using it in a program like CorelDraw, would that have issues?

When you rotate an object less than 1 degree, the local axis is no longer aligned with an object?
For example you have a wheel which rotate nicely along it's central axis, then you tilt the wheel by 0.5 degree and when you rotate around it's central axis, the wheel wobbles. The pivot point actually doesn't rotate with the object for rotations less than 1 degree...
EDIT: Video demonstrating the issue: [URL] ....

9.0 CS2, but it is not so important, because the questions are fundamental.
Gradient Overlay
1. Look at the gradient settings scale. Why gradient isn't stopped at the second opacity stop and go on till the edge of the settings scale? After all, following the logic it’s the opacity stop and the gradient filling have to be stopped at it. That is to say If the logic of gradient algorithm is next. Filling begins from the left edge of the settings scale and stops at the first opacity stop(this filling is initiated by first markers). Then it continues since first markers and stops at the second opacity stop(this filling is initiated by second markers). But in practice filling continues since second markers also, though there is no third markers which initiate it.
2. Why second markers are necessary(they can’t be deleted)? I can suggest if second markers would be deleted and the first would be moved to position of the second, we would got the same gradient preview. Of course if the filling begins from the left edge and is initiated by the markers as I wrote above.
3. User color – you can set fixed color, which you can choose for the future in a dialog window. The window can be called via click to the pointer near the color icon.
When I click the pointer I see only one window where are three text items – foreground, background, user color. All is clear about foreground and background, they are set in two squares in the tools palette. When I choose “user color” there is no any window is appeared which have to contains at least current user color icon, color picker window, and buttons that allow to tune and apply user color: “set as user color sample” for picked color, “use user color sample as user color”. So how I can tune and choose user color?
Gradient:
4. I use gradient tool from tools palette. I spent it since canvas top edge till guide line. What is the gist of spending it for a specific distance? Why the color of first color stop fills the space till the guide line changing and stops at some light blue. And then monotonically fills with it all distance from guide line till canvas bottom and have no any opacity changes at bottom. Although it have to have some opacity changes because them present in the end of gradient settings scale.

I read an interesting technical article today about the development of JPEGmini algorithm, that supposedly will provide lossless compression, and can be read by any current software that reads a jpeg file. THe article is rather technical, but that is good, as it sounds like a real deal rather than a magic concept. Give it a read and post your comments on JPEGmini. URL....
Here is a couple of excerpts:
Q: How does the JPEGmini algorithm work?
A: The algorithms we have developed, on which we have filed 14 patent applications, simulate the human visual system. Our technology analyzes each specific photo, and determines the maximum amount of compression that can be applied to the photo without creating any visual artifacts. In this way, the system compresses each photo to the maximum extent possible without hurting the perceived quality of the photo.
Q: How much compression does JPEGmini enable?
A: Our technology can reduce the file size of photos by a factor of up to 5x without hurting their quality. The amount of compression that our algorithms apply varies from photo to photo as mentioned above, but you can estimate the average amount of compression according to the photo resolution, as described in the following table:
Photo Resolution Average File Size Reduction Using JPEGmini 8MP and more70 – 80%5-7MP60 – 75%3 MP50 – 60%2 MP30-50%1024×76825 – 35%800×60020 – 25%640×480 or less10 – 20%

I was wondering if anyone was familiar with algorithm used to Color Balance.
I'm interested in automating a process which includes Desaturating and then Color Balancing.
I solved the Desaturation (take the highest number of R G B, divide by 2, apply to R G B values of pixle.)
I am curious to know how a pixle would be modified by say, +100 Blue in Lows/Mids/Highs

I am trying to model the following simple structure:
I made this example by creating a new polygonal cylinder, rotating the top edges that are to the right of the x-axis and repositioning the affected vertices afterwards, but doing it that way just doesnt feel right, it seems too unclean to me.
I would like the affected vertices to only move on a given axis when rotating the edges, so I dont need to reposition them after the rotate operation. I tried to illustrate what I mean in the following screenshot:
The edges I want to rotate are marked in red, the vertices that are supposed to only move on the y-axis are marked in green. The arrows indicate the desired movement.
Is this way of rotating an edge possible with the rotate tool or something?

So in an effort to reduce PDF file size, I went to the dwg to pdf.pc3 plot driver and wen tot he custom properties. The dpi is set to:
600
400
400
400
I dropped the top number to 400 and the stucco hatch and AR-Sand hatch both print weird when we print to PDF. Some of the hatch is fine, some comes out too dark. It's pretty weird. If I leave the settings as the default then it prints perfectly fine.
Why those hatches might be affected by dropping the dpi? Everything else appears to print great and the file size is reduced.

I'm trying to implement some effects in C++ for my user interface controls. I've figured out that Photoshop Layer Styles uses an anti-aliased form of the Euclidean Distance Transform for "Precise" techniques (Inner Glow and Outer Glow).
But what is the method used for the "Softer" technique for Outer Glow and Inner Glow? It seems this is also used for the "Smooth" technique when computing the height map for Bevel and Emboss.

Steps:
1. make 10px circle
2. make mask from it
3. reduce mask by 3px
4. crop object to mask
system configuration:
Win 7 Pro 64bit, Intel i5-2500, 8 GB RAM, 128 SSD SAMSUNG + 2TB on hard drives.

It's a common practice when building layers to duplicate existing layers as a start. Additionally, it is good practice that layer names be meaningful.
Suppose I start with the following layer: layer 1
If I duplicate that layer, it seems reasonable I'd get: layer 2. Instead I get: layer 1 copy
Then if I duplicate again I get: layer 1 copy#1, even though this is copy #2.
I propose the following: An option be available whereby user is queried for name of any layer which is to be generated. This is easier than having to edit automatically generated layer names. If automatic layer names are to be generated, code first checks if previous layer name ends in a sequence of digits. If yes, then these digits are incremented as an integer until a unique layer name is generatedIf the layer name does not end in a sequence of digits, then "#1" is appended to the layer name, and the "1" incremented until a unique name is generated.
So with this algorithm:layer 1 would become layer 2 for a first copy, then layer 3 for a second copy, etc.background would become background#2 for a first copy, then background#3 for a second copy, etc.
The problem with using "copy" in the layer name is that it is probably only in the substantial minority of cases that the newly generated layer is destined to be a true copy, so the automatically generated layer name is very likely inappropriate. Better is to use a simpler, shorter name which applies in a greater fraction of the applications.

When upgrading to a newer version of PS (ps7 -> pscs), would i need to transfer all my saved files (projects, brushes, styles, actions, etc...) manually (drag and drop method), or would the installation/setup process do everything for me?
I'm afraid that if i do decide to upgrade to CS and need to transfer all my files, i might unknowingly miss an essential folder and lose it forever when uninstalling the older version.
(or does the setup/installation take care of getting rid of the older version, too?)
