Lightroom :: Fails To Create Preview And Smart Preview?
Mar 29, 2014I am using MacBook (late 2008) OS X 10.9.2 and recently upgraded to Lightroom 5.3 from Lightroom 4. After a while, some photo started to show exclamation mark at the right hand corner of the photo (*.CR2 raw files in NAS) in grid view. When I click on the exclamation mark, it shows a dialog with following message; "Lightroom has encountered problems reading this photo". So, I moved previews.lrdata, which is about 9GB, to the trash and restarted the Lightroom 5, expecting Lightroom 5 to create a new previews.lrdata. However, it won't create any preview at all.

size of Previews.lrdata file stops at 152KB.
Lightroom :: Smart Preview Warning At Export
Jul 23, 2013s it possible to have a warning, if you're about to export just from the Smart Preview data? I really love Smart Previews and it speeded my workflow very much, but it happend some time that I exported my data without having my external harddrive connected, just working with Smart Previews. So the only "warning" was that it's much faster than usual if you export your files :-) It would be great to have kind of a dialog, if' you're really sure to export just from Smart Previews!

Jun 25, 2013I only have one computer, laptop mac retina. All my pictures are on it but I want to keep my originals only for the 4-5 stars rated, the one I keep working on, the one I'm suppose to export/print in bigger size than the smart preview (2540). I have a backup (backing up every 2-3 days) on an external drive of all my pictures. how I can "automaticly" select in the finder all the pictures that are not 4-5 stars rated and delete them from the laptop. As I said, the idea is to keep on the mac all the good pictures in original format and have all the others pictures in smart preview mode.

Nov 9, 2013We have standard XMP files with metadata for our collections - box number, folder number, copyright, creator, etc. Is there a way to add this to Smart Preview so that it will apply it to all photos at the same time?
It would save so much time to be able to use Smart Preview and apply all the metadata and just tweak it for descriptions, than to upload the XMP files for each image.
Lightroom :: Change Made To A Disconnected Smart Preview Will Automatically Update
Jul 30, 2013It's my understanding that a change made to a disconnected smart preview will automatically update the main database when connected to the drive containing the photo and database. Mine doesn't seem to work automatically. After reconnecting i have to save the metadata for the changed files on the version of Lightroom with the samrt previews and then read the metadata on the primary version of Lightroom. Do both versions of Lightroom need smart previews installed? Should I use a certain procedure of which i'm not aware? I have an iMac for my main computer and a Mac Book Pro for the remote computer.

Sep 25, 2013I observed that when photos are deleted while in a smart preview collection the photos are not removed from the smart preview collection. Resulting over time in a large smart preview file with unused photos, consuming your hard drive space.
It is therefor important only to delete photos when they are first discarded from the smart preview catalog.
When eventually photos are removed while they were available in the smart preview catalog the work around to delete them is to locate the catalog named: "Lightroom 5 Catalog Smart Previews.lrdata" and to open it with Lightroom. When opened you can select the photos and remove them. After that you can remove the folder from your Lightroom folders and the file itself will consist of only 0 bytes.
It would maybe a good idea that removing photos automatically would discard them from the smart preview.

Jul 1, 2013I removed bounch of photos ("Delete from disk" to be precise) but smart previews are still there! How to remove them too?
"Discard all smart previews" is not an option. I have few thousands of photos and wanna delete just 300 unnecessary smart previews.

Mar 22, 2013I have built a smart collection that is for my photos without a title, but the photos with titles are showing up also. The condition I use is "title doesn't contain words." Do I need to add other conditions? I'm not using any of the conditions in the "find bar" at top of Library Module. I'm trying to build my own workflow using Smart Collections.

If I do the same with the rejected flag, they appear in the collection...

Jul 1, 2013I would like to take my existing photo's on an internal drive and move them to an external drive. I would like to leave my catalogue where it is on my internal drive. I would then like to use smart previews to allow me to edit my photo's with or without the external drive connected and have the photo's automatically sync'd when the external drive is re-connected.

I have the overpirnt preview checked; also, the objects I want to overprint have the Overprint Fill checked on the Attributes window. I even tried converting to spot colors, since I got the "In RGB documents, overprinting only affects spots colors" message. Still, no overprint preview.

Jun 2, 2013I recently bought a Nikon D7100. I took some test shots and imported the images to Lightroom 4.4, then generated 1:1 previews for all the images.
Previews zoomed to 1:1 in Library Mode are noticeably soft. The image below is a screen shot of the Library preview:
Moving to Develop View produces a higher-resolution 1:1 preview. The image below is a screen shot of the Develop preview:
Look at the bricks and window screens to see the difference.
This difference occurs immediately after import (with a User Preset applied during import). Once any Develop work is done, the Library preview updates and displays at full resolution.
This problem makes doing initial editing/selection of images time consuming, because I can't determine the sharpness/quality of imported images until I've done some kind of Develop adjustment on each image.

Mar 18, 2012I have many PDF slideshows and PDF images. It seems that Lightroom will not read PDF files though... I recall that Bridge can read PDF files. I believe it would be a useful addition to LR to enable the viewing and cataloguing of PDF files.

Jan 13, 2014Having recently swapped my old iMac for a new Retina MacBook Pro running OS X 10.9.1, I seem to be having some difficulty getting the new Mac to open Lightroom 5.3 when a memory card is inserted either into the SD card slot on the laptop itself or into the card reader of the monitor. I have no problems importing pictures into Lightroom if I open Import myself but I find it odd that cannot enable the same function as I had on the old iMac. Within the Lightroom preferences I have the option "Show import dialog when a memory card is detected" enabled. However, what I find really odd is that my old stalwart application for sorting this sort of stuff out, Image Capture, does not seem to recognise Lightroom. When I open this application with a memory card inserted I am unable to select Lightroom as an "Other" option from the "Import to" menu. see the screenshot below. what is causing Image Capture to dislike my fresh install of Lightroom (via Creative Cloud).

Sep 28, 2013In the below print screen, the lens should be 70-200 f2.8, which normally is found. The only difference with this photo is that it was accidently shot as a JPG and not RAW. I dont see how that makes a difference since the metadata still lists the correct lens as you can see on the screenshot:
The lens profile defaulted to "None". And you can see the dropdown I need to use when this happens. When I select "Nikon", the profile is USUALLY then enabled, but not always.
This has stopped working in the past for unknown reasons. If I "enable" a whole day of photos from multiple lenses and bodies --that is when it is mostly likely to fail (even though these lenses all have profiles). Perhaps a better question is how does the lookup logic work in the first place? I tend to take it on faith when a product's features work until I'm forced to figure it out. In "Setup" I don't know what the various options do. Normally it just works. I do not know the difference between "default" "auto" and "custom" nor do I know the function of "Save" and "Reset".
Lightroom :: Can't Jump Back From Publish Service Folder Preview To Different Folder Preview In Grid Mode
Oct 7, 2013Just downloaded LR 5 and noticed that I cannot jump back from a Publish Service folder preview to a different folder preview in grid mode. The only way to view photos in another folder is to restart LR 5. This only happens when I am viewing photos in a Publish Service such as Flickr.
I updated from LR 4 using Creative Cloud installer.
