Lightroom :: Catalogs Cannot Be Opened On Network Volumes / Removable Storage Or Read Only
Apr 24, 2013I Just had this message from my LR after 3 years of use the catalogs from the same drive.

View 1 RepliesI had my Lightroom 3 catalog on an external hard drive which became corrupted . the only thing I could do was drag and drop it on another one. when trying to open it I got this Error message."Lightroom cannot open the catalog named “Lightroom main Catalog-2-2” located on network volume “Public”. Lightroom Catalogs can not be opened on network volumes, removable storage, or read only volumes".? I didn't have the ability to export catalog.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI get the error message Lightroom catalogs can not be opend on network volumes, removable storage or read only volumes.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to figure out if it's practical to use Lightroom to access/manipulate files on network attached storage.
Specifically, suppose I've already generated the 1:1 preview files, and these preview files are on the local hard drive. Does it matter then if the raw files are located physically on a NAS v. on the local hard drive in terms of the speed of Lightroom and ease with navigating from image to image?
is it possible to work with the catalogs in version 5 on a networkdrive?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have seen that there are multiple threads on this subject, and the reasons given for not allowing it were performance and to avoid several concurrent instances of lightroom opening the same catalog.
However, the network drive solution is virtually the only possible solution when lightroom is installed in a virtual machine. Indeed, you don't support linux, and lightroom users who prefer linux install lightroom on virtual machines. Sharing a folder between the linux host and the windows guest is usually done by exposing it as a network drive to the windows guest. (There are many issues with external USB drives and virtualbox).
Hence, allow for catalogs to be opened on network drives.
Have just installed Windows LR4 trial, told it to Import files from my photo collection in a folder + subfolders on a network attached storage (NAS) unit. Windows Explorer tells me that there are 10,308 files in 408 folders in the main folder, totalling 38.8gb but on scanning the folder prior to import LR4 tells me that there are only 9,612 photos.
My photo collection folder contains only photos and no other file types.
Why is there this discrepancy ? I've searched around to see whether there is some hidden filter that is excluding certain photo files but cannot find anything of that nature.
Is it possible to get a Wiretap Gateway running on a Mac to show network volumes mounted on it?
I'm trying to get a gateway setup so I can get ProRes into my Smoke. Everything is running, I can see my "Helper Monkey" from the MediaHub in the network, and browse to it.. but all I see is the System volume, although I have 2 Windows shares mounted from a server. I'd like to avoid having to copy all the media locally to the Mac HD first, and just let it read from over the network off another workstation. I realize the performance implications, but I'd like to use this to create cache media on the Smoke so I don't care much.
I have not licensed the gateway yet since I was just seeing if I can get it to work at all first (I'm actually trying running the Mac in a VM because my actual Mac Pro is old and won't run 64-bit.
I have LR 5.2 and I move files off onto a removable drive as a back-up and it allows me to share the pictures with them when they sometimes lose them. Windows 7 routinely assigns the drive to the letter M:, N:, and sometime P: and apparently I cannot see the folders unless the drive is assigned the same letter as it was when I imported the pictures into the catalog. The folders don’t even show up in the library, but if I do an import all of the folders appear as valid destinations within LR. How can I fix this? The first picture is a screen shot of the library; notice that the year 2013 is missing. The second screen shot is what appears when I go to import; note that 2013 appears. The folders simply do not appear in LR except when I attempt import.
When I look at N: in my “working catalog” it shows it as having catalog “AUMC” but the folders in it belong to the part of my working catalog that I have moved to a different external drive since they’re old picture I don’t use much. They all have question marks, but they are resolved with I attach the external drive with those folders on it.
My team is using AutoCAD 2014 and multiple people have noticed that while they're working, when they try to save the file it pops up a message saying the file is read only.
Multiple people on our team has had this issue and it only started recently. (We've had it installed a few months now).Could it be the new file tabs feature in 2014?
I am trying to open Lightroom 4 from my desktop and it keeps giving me this message:The Lightroom catalog named "Lightroom 4 Catalog" cannot be opened because another application already has it opened.
View 1 Replies View RelatedIs it possible to ask Photoshop to save TIFF images using tile internal storage rather than strip storage? A little-known setting, a registry patch perhaps?
View 2 Replies View RelatedMy Catalog "somehow" has become distributed over two volumes A and B. A has 60,000 and B has 5,000 files. How do I consolidate the volumes? [I want A to have all 65,000 images]
(Later I want the other of the volumes to simply be a bakup)
I would like to add that volumes A and B are my Master Library, each of which is subdivided into folders for years and within each year there are folders for each event. The two volumes have the same hierarchy of folders.
for rendering purposes (we work on stop-motion-stop films) in our company's processing workflow, I export many different image sequences with 1000 or more JPG images from many different RAW NEF folders. All these folders with 1000s of RAW NEF files get developed and then exported as JPGs
- into folders on various volumes on servers. so other people then further render from these folders in AE or other hosts.
sometimes however, after a week or month, for whatever reason we need to re-develop original RAW NEFs of a folder of a specific set in it's original lightroom folder (from where those JPGs had been exported from).
By knowing a filename like for example _DSC7561.jpg out of a JPG export folder I then would like to quickly find and locate the original folder within the LR4 library, containing e.g. the file _DSC7561.nef from where that JPG was exported from (for specific reasons I can not change all those export JPG folders are on different volumes than the original folders with RAW file sequences).
So, when I sit in front of LR4 on the RAW development stations is there a way to find
- folders in the lightroom catalogue in volumes or over volumes (by their known folder name or part of their foldername)?
- filenames or part of filenames in folders over volumes, or within a volume?
it is so time consuming to scroll all folders to find an original folder with RAWfiles from where we developed and exported JPGs. we keep those RAW folders not only for the original RAW files of course, but also because of the XMP sidecar files with all the development changes. sometimes we even store snapshots or several stages of XMP processing to them.
Of course LR4 offers search for a filename within a folder via CMD+F, but we don't need that actually.
we need CMD+F for the library search for foldernames or folders over a volume at least, but better would be various volumes.
are there any LR4 plugins or tools that solve this? Or did I oversee something?
I can of course search for any folder containing a file _DSC7561.nef outside of LR4 in finder with tools like "Tembo" or "Find any File" easily, but that don't jumps me to the folder in the LR4 library, with all my developement changes.
PS: we don't use keywords, it is not possible with TB of images each week but we use specific sequencing names for image file sequences and structured folders of course.
I recentely upgraded to LR4.1 and it seems to have done something strange with my Folders. As you can see in the earlier version all of my harddrives are displayed as panel items in the folders panel. However now it's only displaying the boot drive and i have to drill down to the volumes folder to get to my hard drives..This is pretty annoying since i work on multiple hard drives.
I have read in earlier versions that people found a workaround by using the "Promote Subfolders" option until all drives were displayed. However this option doesn't seem to be in LR 4. None of my hard drives are compressed, and they are all internal.
It may be worth noting that when I went to create a new catalog it didnt show any hard drives begin with.
Original Display of the Folders Panel
Current Display of the Folders Panel - as you can see only one drive is displaying.
I am running Mac Os X Lion 10.7.4, LR 4.1
First, I'm using the new Lightroom v4.1 on a Windows 7 x64 system.
I'm trying (without success) to remove volumes from the list that's shown when a user clicks on the 'Import' button (lower left of screen) and 'Select a source' which, naturally, shows all the drives in my system.
There are five volumes; four internal and one external.
There are only two drives which contain photos that I'm interestered in importing/editing.
The other drives contain files that I have no interest in editing or organizing.
For example, several hundred (scanned and collected) very old family photos that I wish to keep pristine, with no editing of any kind. As for placing them in collections, I already have them in dated, carefully named folders.
So, as this is a shared computer, I want to remove the volumes (drives) so that the aforementioned photos can't be inadvertantly imported.
How to change the storage location in Lightroom 3.6.?
I use my internal hard drive NTFS of my MacBook Pro as my storage location of Lightroom 3.6. being installed in Snow Leopard now but the data of my photos get too big now. I have two fast and big external hard drives eSATA now which I want to use for my data/photos. I know how to copy the data from one hard drive to another but I don't know how to change the settings in connection with Lightroom easily. I still want to watch all fotos on my MacBook Pro but don't want to save any fotos on my internal harddrive any more. Isn't it possible to have the programm Lightroom on my internal harddrive but the data on two times on two different extermal hard drives? If I look at Lightroom - settings of catalogue - I see that the internal harddrive location is my storage location now but I my two external harddrives don't appear as folders. Why? How to change that so that the external hard drives appear in Lightroom and I can watch all my fotos immediately (sometimes using external hard drive 1 and sometimes using external hard drive 2)?
My external hard drives are in HFS+ but I use the software of Paragon so that there shouldn't be any problem to read and write the data (I use also Final Cut Express so my external hard drives are HFS+ and not NTFS).
I want to impert many data from CDs - should I copy the fotos first to my external hard drive and then import it into Lightroom or is it easier to import the data directly from the CD in Lightroom so that I don't have to name the folders two times? I see that I have to sort the fotos from the CDs in new different folders and an used to do that in Finder of my MacBookPro. In Lightroom I don't want have to click each of hundreds of fotos to be able to put it into the right folders ... But how to import only a part of a CDs quickly into the right (newly created) folders?
Recently switched from Vista to W8/64 (new pc) and reinstalled PSE11, after which I can no longer copy files to removable media, i.e. to a DVD. After choosing the right drive and pressing the "done" button the burning screen pops up and freezes.

I thought I'd experiment (for the first time) with the web creation options in LR5.3, but at "Save" time point all materials, files, links, etc. inside my own hard drive or SSDs on the laptop. There are times when I want to show someone images without depending on a connection to the Internet. I have web-delivered services I can use but I am looking for the quickest appearance and on the screen and some control over navigation (able to organize the materials). I want ease of replacement or addition of images from LR as circumstances dictate.
I own Dreamweaver from CS4, and have a little experience setting up links. Perhaps I would have to do some work in Dreamweaver?
My "real" portfolio is a WordPress.org install hosted at my ISP and I might even pay to have that template duplicated on this "local web server" but that's a different question.
A short time before Adobe released Lightroom 5, Flickr announced that it is enhancing its service by offering 1TB for free to regular users and (most important for me) expanding the limit for videos to 1GB, which full playback and embedding support. The previous video size limit was 500MB. Unfortunately, LR5 will not let me publish my videos to Flickr because LR5 is enforcing the old file size limits. Is this something that can be changed in a configuration setting somewhere? Or do we need these constraints updated in an upcoming patch?
The Flickr integration is huge for me. Having limited storage, I need to offload data to cloud storage whenever possible. Flickr is a great value in media storage.
1-When shooting tethered, is there a way to have it place the incoming raw files in two locations at once? Such as on an external as well as the internal drive for backup purposes?
2-When I plug the camera in (D300s), Windows 7 sees the camera almost instantly. However, Lightroom takes a minute and 30 seconds before it sees it to allow tethered shooting.
When building the first catalog, is there a way to prevent Lightroom from scanning everything connected to the computer?
I want it to scan ONE folder, something without a few hundred thousand TIFF and RAW image files (along with various copies of each of them in full and low res versions of JPG & PNG).
I recently learned using presets in LR. I currently use LR5.2.
I recently installed a few third-party presets to LR.
I am very happy with the performance of these presets.
Here is a problem: I have many LR catalogs.
Is there a way to install all presets to catalog whenever I create new one (just like a default preset) and also to old catalogs?
LR 3 catalogs are empty in LR 4?
