Lightroom :: 4.2 - How To Export Folder As A Catalog
Nov 21, 2012
I find that I edit files on my laptop but I want the files, with their edits to reside on my desktop computer also.
I had been exporting the folder as a Catalog, but can't think of shy I can't just copy the folder with both the RAW and XMP files and import the folder on the Desktop PC. This option seems to work just as well as the catalog option.
Any reason I should choose one way over the other? Using Lightroom 4.2?
i have an 8 giga LR4 catalog (about 300000 images).just installed the new LR5 and tried openning the LR4 cat in LR 5.it said it needs to upgrade, but in the middle of the prosses i had this messege: "lightroom encountered problems when trying to update the format of the catalog file and cannot use this catalog in this version of LR"
i saw that there is an option to export all my LR4 catalog as a new catalog and than import it into LR5.i haven't tried that yet since i'm worry that i might loose some info. will this process (of exporting and importing) keep all my LR settings? like develop user presets, keywords and collections?
I am trying to simplify my existing catalog, in order to move it to a new computer and to then upgrade to LR4. When I right click on a top folder, and click "Add parent folder", I do not get a new visible parent folder, and my existing folder disappears from view.
I have checked the invisible files rebuilt the desktop, restarted loaded a back up from different drive - photos are in place but the lightroom folder is gone.
Yet the drive in question space, has not changed still full. I'm loosing a lot of work two three full days between backups had added a lot of new material.
my main question is How can I free up the 86 gigs of space this 'missing folder' is still taking up..sucks I'm seroius never seen this before.,228000 images were organized in that folder I had done a lot of work and was having issues generating previews due to space on drive was clearing space opptimized then did a 'get info' on the lightroom master folder just moments before lightroom crashed for third time today. Poof entire master catalog folder gone. Main drive size exactly the same.Seems isolated to lightroom..all aspects of my mac are fine.
Is there a file limit, folder implosion feature? I'm current and purchased just to do this organization.
how to set up LR on new computer.Have my photos on external drive and want them to go to the D: drive.Moved the LR Cat folder to my C: SSD drive with LR off.
Opened LR and relocated LR to new lr.cat file location on C: drive.Lr shows all my Picture folders from year 2000 to year 2014 with the expected ? marks.I don't want the picture folders on C: drive but on D: drive.
I accidentally removed a folder with images from my lightroom catalog. The lightroom .lrcat file seems to be intact (112.400kb) and the images are still on my hard drive.
Is there anyway that i can reimport the folder and that lightroom applies the changes that i earlier made on them? I assume all that information is stored in the catalog file? But when i try to reimport them, no changes are being made.
I have managed to have to re-load my Lightroom 5 catalog which unfortunately is a month out of date. During that month I changed my folder structure and whilst I can see the folders and images on my hard drive, my Lightroom 5 catalog is as it was a month ago without the new folder structure and with a lot of photos missing. Obviously the link between the images and Lightroom has been lost because I changed the folder structure without backing up the catalog. re-link my photos and album structure to Lightroom ?
When I attempt to import photos into an existing folder LR creates a duplicate folder with the same name. The original folder (orange) does not show the imported photos, when I try to move the photos from the duplicate folder (red) over I receive the error message "files already exist in this destination." My lightroom hardrive folder appears correctly, no duplicate folder. Also, on import I am only renaming the files, a sub-folder is not created.
I imported a catalog from my laptop into a catalog that I have on an external hard drive. This has now resulted in two images of the external drive under the folder list in the Library view.
You can see there are two folders called Oxford (which is my external drive). The first contains the images from the catalog that was originally on the external hard drive. The second one contains all the imported photos.
The directories under Oxford are correctly visible when I browse to them on the computer.
I have a 180GB SSD, which I specifically bought, to make Lightroom (4.4) faster and to store 1:1 previews. Initially, I set up Lightroom catalog (containing 18221 images) to never delete 1:1 previews and stored the previews in a high quality mode. This quickly fill up my SSD. I would like to set it up to store as many previews as it can while leaving atleast, say 20GB, free on SSD. The alternative, which is to discard 1:1 previews after 30 days or so, is not really acceptable to me.
I have created virtual copies of an image in Lightroom 4 and I am wondering what will happen to these if I delete the folder containing the master image and its virual copies from the LR4 catalog? Will the virtual copies be automatically deleted? If so, is this reversible in any way? Will i recover these virual copies if I add the folder back into LR's catalog later on?
Also will Adobe Bridge be able to read these virtual copies in both before and even after the folder has been removed from LR4? Or is the 'virtual copy' functionality specific to LR and that the only way to preserve it is to keep the original image within LR and never delete it?
Will exporting a catalog with DNG's allow me to re-import into lightroom if i so choose and show any changes that were made to the pictures (ie: the history for a specific file ; virtual copies) as well as include the originals even if i were to delete the ones i originally imported from my CF card.
I essentially want to create a master backup for each event i am photographing at, and export each event as it's own catalog.
I am not sure if I am going about this the right way, but once of the frustrations I deal with is managing my portfolio of images.
What I have recently done is create a seperate catalog for my portfolio image seperate from my "working catalog". My question is, once I have identified an image from my "working catalog" how can I copy it to my portfolio catalog?
I'm sure this worked in earlier versions of LR (?), but it's been a while since I've required doing this. However last night I needed to export a Collection Set housing several Collections as a single Catlog to an external HD. The options I chose were to export the negative files and available previews.
I seemed to recall that if you Right-Clicked on the Collection Set name there used to be an option "Export Collection as a Catalog", but this option seems only available on Collections not Collection Sets.
Never-the-less I selected the Collection Set, then chose Export as Catalog from the file menu; This worked but only the first 4 collections within the collection set were exported. I repeated this again with the same response. So is this a bug?
I know I could export each Collection as an individual catalogs then combine them but the Collection Set houses 13 sub collections, so rather laborius.
I’m teaching a college class and a couple of my students are shooting RAW. When they complete their assignment in Lightroom, they Export as Catalog, compress that folder and submit it to me through Dropbox. This worflow works great with students who shoot .jpg but the kids who are shooting RAW have files that are too large to upload.
If you export a group of photos as a Catalog, does this export all virtual copies including their own repsective xmp data? I need to send a batch of RAW files to someone but need them to be able to see all the virtual copies as well.
I often use the export option "Choose folder later". When using this preset, however, the initial folder it navigates to upon clicking export keeps defaulting back to a library folder that I don't want exports going to. How do I change the initial folder on this export so it's the root photos folder, or desktop, etc?
I have used LR 4 in the past, and when I wanted to export my RAW files into JPEGS I would go to File>Export. I tried to do the same with LR CC, got the page, however, I couldn't figure out what the page should be set up for so that the jpegs went into the same folder as the RAW files. They went into another folder on my C drive. Or I get an error message:
Unable to Export An internal error has occured; Win32 API error 2 ("The system cannot find the file specified.") when calling ShellExecuteEXW from AgWorkspace.shellExecute
How can I do what I want to do, which is to export RAW images to JPEGS?
I'd like to be able to setup an export preset that would save the selected photos to a subfolder within my export folder with the name of the subfolder automatically set to match the collection (or collection set) name. Is this possible? I have tried looking at the custom folder name options but couldn't quite
So, if my parent export folder is say c:PhotosExports and my collection name is 'Summer2012', I'd like for it to automatically export any photos in that collection to c:PhotosExportsSummer2012. Is this possible or do I need to set it manually each time?
Reason I'd like to automate this is say I'm in a rush to post up the pics, I might go ahead and export them without editing much and then manually cut and paste them from c:PhotosExports into a Summer2012 folder. If I later make edits to the photos, it'd be much handier to just use a preset export knowing that they would automatically update the files in the Summer2012 folder, rather than having to do another manual cut and paste every time, or manually select the folder if choosing the 'Choose folder later' option. Is there another way to do to what I'm looking for?
When I create an export preset and then return later to use it, the folder for saving it to has changed (to whatever I used last. Because I use the presets to re-size images for my 40 odd web sites, this is really inconvenient. Can this behaviour be changed so that the preset remembers the selected folder? And if not could it be considered as an option for the next update?
I have been working with LR 2.7 for a while now and was happy with it.
PC - Win XP - LR3.5 Photo's stored on external hard disk (K:)
The RAW captures of a Nikon 3100 I recently won were not being recognized/imported by LR 2.7 and I installed the 3.5 version to see if it was any better. I would have to buy it anyway by the time I switch to Win7. In 3.5 the Raw files were imported, the settings of 2.7 were nicely taken over but now and I cannot export the files I have worked on to the K: drive of the external hard drive as I used to do with 2.7.
I get the message 'The folder could not be found' though it is set in the Export Window and I am looking at it in Win Explorer.
The original RAW captures are on the D: drive but that was always the case with 2.7 as well... I am doing it exactly as I used to with 2.7.
I tried with a photo from an older folder of my usual camera and everything works fine there. The problem seems to be only with the Nikon files. Now I start wondering if there is something with raw format of this Nikon camera that is putting LR in a twist...
I have the latest update in LR. I have had this problem on and off and thought maybe it was a bug and once I did the update things would work, but doesn't
So I want to export a folder from LR onto one of my external hard drives however when I click to export my only choice is Desktop. I can open that "tree" as far as it goes but it NEVER shows Computer so I can select which external hard drive to export files to as a backup.
When I go to explorer from the start menu I can see all my files in Explorer including Computer with my external drive just not in LR.
I have restarted my computer, I have tried two different hard drive thinking it just might not recognize one of the drives but that isn't it either.
I have had this problem in the past and haven't been able to figure why sometimes I see my Computer and other times all I see is Desktop as an export option.
