Lightroom :: 3.6 Encountered An Error When Reading Catalogue File And Needs To Quit
May 16, 2012
Working in LR 3.6, Mac OS10.6.8, 8GB RAM, accessing from an external USB 2TB harddrive, and when opening an image I get the error:
Â
"Lightroom encountered an error when reading a catalogue file and needs to quit.
Â
"Lightroom will attempt to diagnose the problem the next time it launches."
Â
I've run "Optimize Catalogue" and that didn't relieve the problem. Also have deleted preference files and still no joy. I also have upgrade to LR4 in hopes that it will fix the problem and it didn't. So I've removed LR4 for the time being until I can figure this out in LR3.
Â
Here is a screen shot:
I keep getting this error message in LR 4: "encountered an error when reading its previous cache and needs to quit". I've restarted my computer a few times, but it keeps coming up. I got online and found some posts that say "go in Library and " or other posts. The problem is my LR screen is grayed out and I can't go into it at all.
I have the 30 day trial version of Lightroom. I was able to use it for one week, but the past 1.5-2 weeks, it has been locked up and giving this error message. How do I resolve the problem? And how do I reset the 30 day free trial? I would like to have time using the product, before deciding on the annual contract.  "LR encountered an error when reading from its preview cache and needs to quit. Lightroom will attempt to fix this problem the next time it launches."
LR locked up and I had to force close. Now everytime I try to open I get and error message 'LR encountered-an error when reading from it's preview cache and needs to quit'
I am installing LR4. I tried to update the catalog.I received the message that LR encountered problems when trying to update the format of the catalog file and cannot use this catalog in this version of Lightroom. When I click on the See Adobe Technote button, I received the message that that file is unavailable from the Adobe Website. I don't want to loose all my catalog information from my previous instralling of LR2.7.Â
While trying to do a full backup to an external hard drive, I am getting a message "error encountered while writing file" after about 75% of the 14,000 photos. I believe I have traced the problem to a missing slide show presentation program that was on an external hard drive (F) I no longer have. The program still works (from the C drive), however if I click on the program thumbnail in the Organize screen (which points to the F drive), and try to delete it, I get a message "An error occurred while reading files or writing files to disc. The disc may be full or there may be a problem with the source media." I believe that is because it is looking for the program on the non-existent F drive. What can I do to enable a backup?
I am trying to move my catalog from a Windows xp computer to a new Windows 7 computer. In attempting to do so I an trying to make a backup of my catalog. When I attempt to make a full catalog backup I get an error message at the end of the writing of the backup file. The message is: "Error encountered while writing file." Â The images are written to the backup file (> 20,000 images) and the Catalog.buc is written as well, but the Backup.tly is missing in the backup folder.I have gone thru my catalog and have found no unconnected files and no file that are in need of repair. Everything seems to be in order with the catalog.
My Lightroom has unexpectedly stopped exporting files. Nothing that I am aware of has changed--I haven't changed cameras or added new software. No error message comes up, it just does nothing after the Export dialog box.
I am not being able to open a .cdr file in Draw. Its about 1.16 gb, I know its big but I didnt realise it has become so big, it has 18 pages now. It was working fine till yesterday. but now when i am trying to open it a pop up comes showing error reading file. I am using x4 in a 32 bit windows 7 with 4 gb ram.I have tried opening in laptop with 64bit windows 7 4 gb ram, it opened till 80% adn then a different error came which said - invalid object. I need to retrieve the artwork, i have worked on it for more than 3 weeks. The back up file also shows the same.
I had my Mac crash on me a few days ago and since then I've been only able to work on my current project for ten minutes at a time before I get the above dialogue come up. Â It's not just this file that suffers from this and there doesn't appear to be a pattern to which file is affected. The files that are mentioned in the dialogue are outputs from both FCP and from AE itself, they are always Quicktimes and they are compressed with the Animation codec, although I've used a number of other codecs and it doesn't seem to make any difference. If I quit and restart AE, I can continue working for a while on a composition with the same file that caused the dialogue to appear, until it happens again, often with a different file mentioned in the dialogue. Â We have re-installed the CC suite after an uninstall and clean-up, but to no avail. Â Do we need to reinstall the OS? Could it be a quicktime thing?
i was working on an animation and that was a great animation I worked on that 2 months and i was working on that and when i wanted to save the scene the monitor gone black and i restart my pc.and when i opened the maya and tried to open the scene it said error reading file.
I'm using Coreldraw X3,operating system, Windows XP Professional version 2002, 1GB of RAM,free space of 4.56GB on C drive, 34.8GB on backup drive, display adapter Radeon X300,HP compaq dc7600 convertibleI'm having a lot of difficulties opening a series of files. I had been working on a laptop for a few months and upon returning to the office I tansfered the files to my desktop to complete thr final revisions. I worked on my desktop for 3wks without no problems and then one day I went to open the files and recieved this message on all of them:"Error reading a bitmap in file"I have since tried numerous methods with no success.
I cannot open one of my catalogs in Lightroom 4 . Â It's a large catalog, created in LR4, and it's always worked fine. It lives on an external hard drive (along with all the pictures in that catalog). Â The other night, I set another hard drive down and touched the first drive, accidentally disconnecting it from the computer while LR was open (or possibly while LR was in the process of opening). Â When I reconnected the drive and tried to open the catalog again, I received a message that the catalog couldn't be opened since it was open in another application. (Nothing else was open or using it, obviously.) Â I researched the internet, found a suggestion, and removed the .lock file from the catalog folder. NOW I am getting the message "Unexpected error opening catalog. The catalog could not be opened due to an unexpected error."
---- IF I have to reload the software, do I lose anything? Do I lose my edits, my history, my preferences? Â I want to preserve the history of all of the edited photographs, not just the "composite LR adjustment" or whatever you call it... some of the folders of pictures have matching .xmp files and some do not. I think this might be due to a preferences change a few months after I created the catalog - I guess it doesn't apply this change retroactively, or perhaps it would have had I opened those folders... not sure. I had backed up the original RAW files (which are still present on the external hard drive and seem just fine), but the catalog hasn't been backed up recently. I think I have to re-install LR4, and I just want to make sure I can keep all the work I've done.
I have changed from 32 bit pc to 64 bit and can't open my previous catalogue, I get an error message saying catalogue might be open and used with another program (which it isn't) or I might need permissions.......
I am not much of a computer programmer, but an amateur photographer who just had the catalog with 1.5 years worth of my baby picture edits corrupted. I am so upset. I don't understand the SQlite program, I get a "syntax error" when trying to follow directions for fixixng it.Â
I am currently using LR 4 and am unable to open a catalog outside of LR. When I attempt to open a catalog from where it is stored in My Photos I get two dialog boxes (attached screen shots). The only way I can open a catalog is to open LR and go to Open Recent. I keep catalogs for every year and export that year of photos as a catalog and store it where I keep the photos. Up until a few months ago I was able to go to the folder of the year I wanted to open, double click the LR catalog and voila! No problems. The catalog opened.Â
i was trying to move some files via LR.I've researched and found that everyone else was able to fix their issue by moving the preview database out of LR, tried that but it doesn't fix the problem.I've moved all files except the new preview and catalog (only a single catalog)Â database from the Picture/ Lightroom folder.I've rebooted the computer several times and tried opening LR, still no joy.The size of my catalog is 3.8GBThe size of the preview is 6.5GB (77,186 files in 45,745 folders). This is a new install from scratch on a new PC,
Specs are: Intel i7 4770 32GB memory 2 x 250GB SSD drive in RAID 1 for OS and apps 1 x 6TB SATA HDD for images in a RAID 5 1 x 5.3TB SATA HDD for final images in a RAID 5  I've had nothing but issues with this system since day 1, images transferred and they do not show up correcting inthe individual folders (especially 2012). Total image count is about 320,000  Seems to me that LR cannot handle the numbers although LR3.6 was a lot stable this version is shakey all over the place.
I've browsed a few previous forum questions and answers and it appears I might need to find my catalog and delete my preview cache file(s). However, I cannot find where these files are stored. A few of the forum responses said to go into Lightroom edit/preferences to find where these files are stored, but I cannot get into Lightroom. When I open it, it gives me the error message and I can't seem to get into edit to find where these files are stored.  Also, I'm relatively new to Lightroom (been using it for a little over a month, mostly just editing and not much for cataloging and organizing my photos)
When I try to open LR4 I get the message that LR has encountered an error reading the preview cache. I can't find the preview.irdata files to delete or clear.
I use an external hard drive for my photographs. Recently I've been getting "Lightroom encountered an error when reading from its preview cache and needs to shut down" message. It says LR will attempt to fix this problem the next time it launches, but once I click ok, the program closes and when I restart it the same message comes up.I use LR4 and am working on a Macbook.
I have been using LR since version 1 without problems. I run LR 4.4 on an iMac 27 inch with an external HD - originally OSX 10.6.8. The disk was originally firewire but I have recently changed that to a USB3.0 4tb drive. I copied all my photos and catalogs onto that drive and it worked without problems for about 2-3 months. Recently however I am getting crashes whereas I have never had one before. Suddenly LR4.4 started saying that it had experienced an unknown error and had to quit. On re-launch it wouldn't open the catalog. In fact not only would it not open the catalog, it had left 2 files in the folder with the catalog - lrcat-journal and lrcat-lock. Neither of these can be deleted (I get an unknown error code -50 if I try to do so). However if I restart the computer I can then delete them.  I thought it might be an operating system problem and finally upgraded to OSX 10.8.5. Same problems but I noted an error message saying that there had been a problem reading from the preview cache. I deleted the contents of a folder called Lightroom Cache and deleted my previews. (In fact I run an identical system at another location and simply copy catalogs from one system to the other as I work on them and so I copied the previews from the other system). This seemed to work better.  But then I installed the demo of LR 5, upgraded my LR4 catalog and am having precisely the same problems. I should say that the other system (still on 10.6.8 and an external firewire drive) has worked flawlessly since version 4 was released - and had no problems with versions 1, 2 and 3.  Since LR 5 is exhibiting the same problems, my only thought is that it is a problem with my USB drive. I have run Diskwarrior on it and rebuilt the directory - no problems encountered and have run Disk Utility on it - again no problems found. I have had no problems with the drive that I am aware of - it seems perfectly stable and behaves exactly as it should.  I cannot use LR 4.4 or 5 on this system. Is there any reason why LR should have started to object to the USB drive (it is USB 3.0 and my iMac is only USB 2.0 but there is backwards compatibility). Something is very wrong but I can't work out where to start.
when I was trying to save an image as a PNG, I pressed save then clicked OK on the small PNG Options / Interlace box and then the program completely crashed, encountered an error and needed to close. I tested saving things as PNG and it happened over and over again. It's only happening with PNG, not with any other formats. Can anybody please help? PNG is a format that I need to use and it is becoming very frustrating! I don't know if this help but the Error signature says:AppName: photoshop.exe AppVer: 10.0.0.0 ModName: png.8biModVer: 10.0.0.0 Offset: 00001f44
