InDesign :: Things Disappearing / Appearing In CS6 Files?
Feb 26, 2014
Things keep dissappearing / appearing like text/pics whilst I'm working on Indesign CS6 files ? We have only had it installed about 3 weeks ago and never had this problem before and have been using Indesign for years ?
I have created a TIN surface from polyline contour data in Civil3D 2013. My file shows shows that the surface is present both in the Prospector and when I float over the surface and will preview. I assigned a style to the surface, which for my uses is displaying minors at 1' and majors at 10'. My problem is that the contours only display sometimes. That is to say, SOMETIMES I open the file and I can see the surface contours and other times it simply will not display them.
There has been NO change to the layer (on, visible and not frozen) nor to the style (not assigned as not showing or any different color) between current and the time I used the file last. Occasionally, when I restart my machine, the contours will display for a few hours worth of work, but when I return the next day, or after a hang, restart my machine again, the contours simply will not show. If I add "show triangles" in the style definition, the triangles will show every time, but not the contours.
I changed my RAM from 2- 4GB DIMMs to 2- 8GB DIMMS giving me a total of 16GB of RAM, which I did, but it doesn't seem to have made any difference in performance and the contours still don't show.
Today when I was exploring the options renaming in library mode in order to keep the development settings my images have. Suddenly, on my hard drive I saw an entire photo folder filled with xmp files!  No xmp files were visible before this and I have checked my catalog settings to make sure that writing to xmp files was not checked.  I don't use separate xmp files - Is there a way to merge the xmp files with their associated photo file? Can I delete them without loosing my develop settings and key words?  I have used Lightroom since v2 and currently on v5.3. Have been upgrading regularly and everything was working perfectly until today.
I've been working with psd files in CS4 and after saving once, everything seems normal. After working on a file more and trying to save, I get a message that it can't be saved because the file name is not valid. If I close the file without saving and try to reopen, it says I don't have permission to open the file. I've tried doing a SaveAs under a different name with same results. Even worse is that the files I thought I had saved previously simply disappear from the folder they were in if I do the SaveAs step under a similar, but different name (like adding -1 to the name.) They don't appear anywhere on the computer that I can find. I'm running an up-to-date Windows 7, 64-bit. CS4 also is a current 64-bit.
I have lightroom 4.2 and have just been going through my photos to pick some out for a project, and I've found that some of my files have corrupted while looking at them. They were perfect before, and had used them for a number of years without a problem.Â
It was not the transfer, as I was using these photos before from as far back as 2008 (ones before this have not corrupted yet)
In a seemingly random way, files occasionally just show up corrupted (thumbnail is white with an X in the center) and no longer open. Image info still shows up but the image is corrupted or lost. I do not have the Preserve feature (or whatever it's called) active, as it didn't seem to have an option to select where the preserved files are stored, and I don't want hundreds of MBs of image files to be stored by default on my small SSD C: drive, where my operating system is installed. There seems to be no rhyme or reason as to why these files disappear. I can not professionally trust a program that exhibits this behavior. Must I now store duplicate file sets, to be drawn from should X4 decide to corrupt my working files at random?
We are using C3D 2013 and have recently had 3 different episodes where a dwg file was open and being worked in, CAD shut down without warning and the drawing was lost. As in, it's gone. No longer on the network anywhere. These were 3 different drawings in different projects. The drawings were not new, they had been previously created and worked in by more than one user. We were able to find a backup file and did not lose everything but still thinking there has to be something causing this. The machine is a Dell Precision T5600, 16 GB of RAM, only had it for a few months.
I opened up a few files in Photoshop 7, and when I was done working on them, they wouldn't save saying they were locked. I closed the files without saving them, and then selected them in the folder, right clicked, went to properties, and unchecked "read only." I was able to work on them and save them after that, but then I noticed they had disappeared from the folder. I have gone to folder options and checked "show hidden files." I have searched for them. When I click on the shortcut for them, it says the file is no longer there and it is not in my recycle bin. Have I lost these files for good?
I've been looking for a solution casually for about a year to this, maybe I'm just stupid! When I import all my videos from my camera and put them into appropriate folders they make thumbnails for the files. Unfortunetely when I close down my computer and come back, they have disppeared. This is a pain because, it makes a large amount of files easy to work with as you have some idea what's contained from a thumbnail! Now initially I just thought it was my computers age (not that old) but I have a Dell XPS i7 Laptop also and it's the same story!
I shoot high quality 1080i .mts files so I'm sure they are a resource suck! Is it because the computer doesn't have the power in the RAM to remember all these files? I would of thought, once a thumbnail is made it's just like a JPEG and not changing ever in real time? Is there something I've turned off on my computer, telling it not to remember thumbnails?

I have 2 identical PSD files. Both have 10 different paths that are identical for each file. When I flatten and save one file as a jpeg the paths stay in the file just fine as is usually the case. When I open the jpeg the paths are still there as they should be. Â When I save the other file as a jpeg all the paths are there after I've saved the file and BEFORE I've closed the file. After closing and reopening the file the paths are all gone. If I save the same file as a tiff the paths all stay as usual.
I have PSE11 on my old Windows XP computer. I have installed it also on my new Windows7 computer and hoped it would be easy to transfer the photos by backup/restore via an external hard drive.  When I try to restore a backup on to the new computer, no tly file is found. When I then look at that backup folder in Windows explorer the .tly file is absent. I tried again with an older backup, checking first that a tly file had was present, by looking on the old computer with Windows explorer. Looking with explorer on the new computer - no .tly file. Looking again with explorer on the old computer, the .tly file is gone!  I am completely mystified. I dont't want to keep trying as each successive backup is older. If the .tly files are gone, I assume the backup becomes useless.
InDesign CC will not save at all. Save and Save As are enabled, but I cannot save due to an error "The file DBTmp (followed by a long number) is damaged. I cannot export to IDML due to a background error.
I am a CC member. I have Indesign on my mac note book and my PC desktop. There is a compatibility issue between them. The mac version appears to be still ver 8.0.2 while the PC version has upgraded to ver 9.2 and the mac wont open files from the PC. This sort of defeats the whole purpose of joining CC, which was compatibility between all our machines at work. When the mac CC version 9.2 of indesign will release and any work arounds. I know about saving as the idml thing but it is so clumsy. We want to be flicking the documnet back and forth.
I work in InDesign and create documents which often has a lot of illustrator filesin them. Everything seems to work ok and I definitely prefer to put in vector graphics then raster them, however when it comes to creating a PDF of the document it end up being massive. I think it has something to do with the illustrator files that I place into InDesign, but I'm not sure how to make the illustrator files reduce in size when it comes to PDF-ing them from InDesign. Â Is there any simple tricks when saving the illustrator file? Would it be better to save them as PDF's? Or does that not make any difference?
Just today, Indesign has decided not to save certain files. Also not remember undos, and weirdly not reshape/resize text boxes when manipulated.Have trashed preferences, but to no avail.
I currently have my preflight set up to detect Overprint errors. When they pop up, I'm usually able to either fix it directly in InDesign from the Attributes panel or modify the source eps in Illustrator. However, I am running into a situation on this particular file in which I am getting Overprint errors on linked TIF files. It's not letting me change it from within the Attributes panel of InDesign or from Illustrator. What can I do to get rid of these Overprinting errors?
When I try to place a .docx file in InDesign CS4, nothing happens. I can work around this by changing the .docx file to an .rtf file, but it doens't seem like I should have to do this to place an MSWord text file.Â
I'm seeing my InDesign applications is getting crashed while loading the XML files, please find below the crash report.  Problem signature:  Problem Event Name:                       APPCRASH  Application Name:                            InDesign.exe  Application Version:                          8.0.2.413  Application Timestamp:                    51fb7197  [code]....
I am taking a long shot at this because I know its possible, but I cant seem to figure out how to do it. My problem is that I have a lot of resturants clients who have different menu (take out, dine in, delivery) that contain the same items over and over agian. Problem is that if there is a change in one you have to manually change it in other menus. I am wondering if there is a way to setup these menus where you change the text in one file (doc, txt, rft, incopy or whatever)? BUT the tricky part is that, each of these files have its own indepdent text & paragraph styles and that cant be disturb by the edits.
I just downloaded InDesign. I have been getting away with using Pages on my Mac but I need bleeds and crop marks now and thus need InDesign. I have produced a brochure on Pages and it's ready to go. In the past I was able to use Adobe Reader or some other export to produce crop-marks for print ready material but it has all changed so I am forced to us InDesign. I will (eventually) train on this properly, but in the meantime I have time sensitive material. Is there a way to export my Pages document to InDesign? I tried to do a .pdf but the import into InDesign came up really bad (pixeled etc.) OR am I doomed to redo the whole project?
I cannot place Photoshop pdf files into InDesign CS5 after updating to LION. I get the error message "Failed to open PDF file." I've tried to save as in Acrobrat and then place, get the same message. I've opened the file in Photoshop to re save and get an error message. I can't change our workflow for just me because I'm the only one having this issue.
I had with exporting Autocad files to Photoshop. Now I would like to submit the following question: I have made several attempts to get my Autocad drawings into Adobe InDesign, but the results are highly unsatisfying. I suppose that the EPS format is the right way to do it, but the results I get when I open the EPS files in InDesign are very poor (no sharp lines etc.)
You can drag and drop photos directly from LR to InDesign.  I have LR 4 and InDesign CS6. No matter what I try, I can't figure out how to drag and drop files from LR4 to InDesignCS6. I always get a "cannot" icon appear in LR.  I try to drag-n-drop PSD and JPG files from LR to inDesign.Â
I have InDesgin Cs4 and want to open Pagemaker files. I cannot seem to do it. So...I should purchase InDesgin CC and it would do it. So I did....now I have both...and still cannot open old pagemaker files.Â
