Illustrator :: Get Miter-joined Vertices On Unfilled Right Triangle With 3 Different-colored Sides?
Mar 6, 2013
I want to create a right-angled triangle (just the three sides, no fill) where each side is a different color (say red, blue, and green). For generality, let's assume it's a scalene (rather than isosceles) right triangle. I want the weight of each line to be about 3pt. (But I guess that's not a crucial number. Let's say I'd like the sides to be 20 or 30 pts thick, for the thrill of it.) I know how to draw the three lines of specified width, make them different colors, and arrange them into a triangle. My problem is how to make the vertices (corners) look miter-joined rather than have them overlapping each other, which obviously looks terrible and like something an infant drew in Microsoft Paint. ;-) If I join the 3 paths into a single shape, they all become the same color, so I'm thinking I have to keep it as 3 separate lines (paths). The only solution I can think of is: Instead of drawing three lines of 3pt weight, draw three extremely thin rectangle shapes (about 3pt wide), one of each color, and rotate/position them so that they form the sides of a right-angled triangle. Then go in and do some visual surgery at the vertices to make the vertices look miter-joined.

So when I create a triangle by using the star shape tool and only giving it three points. When I have my triangle, I duplicate it and make it smaller. I center them both up on the canvas, but they don't look centered. As you can see in the picture provided, the bottom has more of a width that the others. I've tried using the alignment tool and the smart guides. I do resize the triangle using shift so it doesn't mess up the shape too.

Basically, I want to join the below three shapes into one shape, but when I'm lining up the anchor points and joining, it's saying:
"The selects objects cannot be joined since they are invalid objects".

Working in Illustrator CS5
Hopefully you can see below, I've drawn the shape on the left and closed the path - it's a closed shape. I then drew another shape on the right, with the two corners exactly placed on the other shape's corners, and I'm getting some sort of overlap/miter join of somesort. Best way I can describe it.
Now I know how to join to open path end points, with the JOIN command. That's not what I'm after here. Simply when I draw another closed shape with the corners matching the other shape, I get those rather awkward and ugly corners? Or can you use the JOIN command? Totally lose here.
Any way to stop this from happening? Surely I'm simply missing something blatantly obvious here?
I guess the question would be: how to draw another shape that joins with the original closed path, without using the pathfinder tools. I want two separate shapes so that I can colour them independently, and not have those horrible corners.

I have a bit of a problem with apple script, I'm creating a Text item and setting the stroke to 0.4pt then i want the stroke miter limit to be set to 2 but it wont work i get :-
Adobe Illustrator got an error: Can’t set properties of text frame 1 of layer 1 of document 1 to {stroke miter limit:2}. (error -10006) but im am able to apply a stroke miter limit of 2 on a path item, is there a way of converting the text frame to a path item then applying the stroke miter limit to it.
on TicketFront_(posX, posY)
tell application "Adobe Illustrator"
activate
set ticketItem to make new text frame in theDoc with properties {contents:{"Some Text"}, position:{(35.7 + posX) * 2.834645, (173.5 - posY) * 2.834645}}
set properties of the text of ticketItem to {text font:text font "Raleway-Thin", size:5.54, justification:center, fill color:{class:spot color info, tint:100.0, spot:spot "PANTONE 4535 U" of document 1}, stroke color:{class:spot color info, tint:100.0, spot:spot "PANTONE 4535 U" of document 1}, horizontal scale:126.46, stroke weight:0.4}
[code]...
ive also tryed putting convert to paths ticketItem in the script which converts the text to paths but the stroke miter limit still dont work.

We need a macro that will allow you to select a certain color fill inside document and change all to no fill hairlines. It needs to be capable of doing it several times within the same document. Does anything like this exist out there?
We have color replacer. We want it to do this automactically with a static group of colors everytime without any manual maniplulation required.

In the old version of Corel that I had, when I drew a box with no fill and only an outline the only way to select that box was by clicking on the outline. There use to be an option at the top with the tools to change this option from selecting the unfilled objected by the outline only and not the inside empty part.
I'm now using Corel x5 and cannot find that option. Does it exist?

Ai CS6.
If I draw a rectangle and use Extrude&Bevel to create a 3D "box" shape, how do I wrap a single line of text around three of the sides? I've created a Symbol from the text, and it shows up in the "Map Art" dialog window's "Symbols" selection, but only one face of the 3D box is shown at a time. I was hoping to see a flattened box shape showing all six faces so I could accurately place the line of text. Similar to what you see when you revolve a path to get a 3D object.
It's even worse if I apply a bevelled edge to the extrusion -- then there are 40 separate "faces" to deal with.

I have a template for a marquee. There are 4 sides to it, so I wondered if there is a way to duplicate the artwork from the first side onto all other sides...without doing them individually 4 times?
So if I select the roof, for example, and insert artwork - can the other 3 roofs be 'linked' in some way, so they become duplicates automatically?
I've tried recording an action for copying, rotating, moving and pasting but it keeps coming up with an error about the Move function not being available.

I could be wrong though it seems Illustrator only has centre points of objects and not midpoints of paths or paths on the side of objects. Can this be?
If there isnt one, how to locate accuratly the midpoint of a rectangle (which is on a 10 degree angle) on one of the short ends?
I have also tried to draw a path leading from the centre point of the rectangle running parrelell to one of the long sides, although it's not like Sketchup that works out your trying to keep the line running parelell.

I am trying to create a pattern that I have created in previous itterations of Illustrator. In CC when I create a triangle (either via Star, Poly, or Pen tool) and then try to rotate it via Transform Each > Transform again, the rotation point moves according to what the bounding box would be if I reset it, rather than staying in one (original) spot relative to the actual bounding box and triangle. I cannot find any settings that would be affecting the rotate point in this way. I am pretty confident that I am using the same procedure now that I did in older versions of Illustrator. Perhaps I am using the wrong procedure.
Naturally, if you are rotating something around its center you should expect that it would end up create a circular pattern. It is more of a square with concave sides. The red is a perfect circle that I grouped to the triangle to demonstrate the rotate points movement. It is located in the exact center according to the align tools.

Basically whilst using a tablet to draw the outline, i want to fill in the space with a colour. however, this leaves a pixellated edge around the fill, resulting in the piece looking far from perfect. how can i get around this without having to hand fill each individual pixel? is there any way to turn the sensitivity on my tablet off on the tool so that i just draw thick black lines instead of ones that get lighter around the edges?
i have included an example.

Using illustrator CC, I want to curve the bottom line of my text upwards, but not have the top or sides move at all. Imagine of the text was something squishy, and I pushed it down onto the top of an arc. I've only been working with Adobe CC for about a week now. I've seen lots of examples of having the text follow a curved path, but they all curve the entire thing, whereas I only want the bottom of the text to curve.

I'm interested in what generalized method you would use to create a circumcircle for any type of triangle; the first thing that comes to mind is: how would you find the circumcenter?
Right now I am constructing two perpendicular bisectors using this method:
• Select the triangle.
• Menu) Object → Path → Add Anchor Points
• Lock that layer and create a new one.
• Draw a line from one of the added anchor points to a corner anchor point.
• With the rotate tool: Alt+click on the added anchor point and rotate the line 90 degrees.
• Then repeat all of that to make another side's perpendicular bisector.

I'm printing some spot colors on colored paper, and wondering if there is a way in illustrator (CS6) to approximate the ink/paper interactions. Im worried about the ink color (greens) shifting to brown on a yellow/peach paper. I've approximated the paper color in Illustrator, and designated the pantone colors. I tried Multply- and the ink color definitely shifts to what I think it would- but not sure if that is the best way.

I've been trying to make consistent gradients for a while now with no success. What I would like to do is make one gradient - say a dark red to light red - and then have a way to change the colors of that gradient without having to search for the correct hex colors for each one. So say I do the red gradient, then if there was some way to overlay something over it to change the colors instead of trying to find them myself.
I know you can do this in Photoshop, but I haven't figured out how to do it in AI. Perhaps there's an easier way I just haven't found yet. I've spent a long time trying to make gradients of different shades (reds, blues, etc.), but the problem is getting each color of the gradient to be about equal to the other ones.

Say I have a square or a polygon. I want to transform one of the sides from straight to a smooth curve. Is there a way to do this?
I have the pen tool and I'm tracing an object. I want to create one curved side then continue on with straight edges. However the tool insists on creating 2 or 3 curves at a time.
Is there a way to create a single isolated or part of a shape curve thats adjustable with both endpoints. It seems that curves I create often are missing adjustment levers at one of their endpoints making it harder to get the shape I want.

I am trying to add an anchor to the left and right sides of a rectangular path at the exact same height. The easy method seemed: drag a guide to the right point and add the anchors at the intersection. But this is adding the anchors to the guide rather than the path "underneath" the guide? How can I place the anchor on the path?
Or is there a better way to achieve this?

Setup 3 bar graphs (i.e. horizontal bar charts), with some data and text labels. Set them all in Type to Value Axis > Tick Marks > Full widthUnder graph > type, leave one as Value Axis: On Bottom Side. Change one to Value Axis: On Top Side. Change one to Value Axis: On Both SidesChange the stroke width and colour of these tick marks / lines the correct way - clicking twice with the 'plus arrow' Group Selection tool to select the whole group, and applying the formatting to the group.Update the chart, e.g. change the data or go into Object > Graph > Type and hit Okay,
Desired behaviour: The re-drawn tick lines should keep their assigned formatting like other groups in a graph.
What I actually see: The desed behaviour happens but only when the Value Axis is set to On Bottom Side. When the value axis is set to On Top Side, the tick lines are reset to an ugly default - 1pt thickness and pure black. When it is set to Both, the lines associated with the bottom labels keep their formatting, the lines associated with the top labels forget their formatting and revert to the default.
I'm trying to set up some chart templates that need the labels to be on the top side, and that need to be editable without losing their formatting. This bug as it stands is making this simple task impossible.
