I have two overlapping circles with 2px solid stroke. Now, I'd like to change the two parts of the circles which are now within the circles to a dashed line. But this creates only parts of the lines in dashed mode. Here, I used the Pathfinder's "Divide".

View 4 Replies View Related9 times our of 10, I can't trim away the overlap on a pair of circles.. as every now and then the trim suddenly decides it will work!

I just can't work out why these pesky circles refuse to trim! I'm trying to merge them into one 'cloud' like shape, by removing the overlapping section from each circle.
I use artioscad wich has a plug-in for illustrator. When I'm working with illustrator i can't change the weight of my strokes, color or fill, in fact i can't do anything, everything is locked. I have tried to unlock the draw but with n o sucessm I have to make the illustrations for the boxes I draw and using *.eps file is not my solution.

I've made a separate layer for the fire, but can't figure out how to make it so that I can change the shape and colors over time on the timeline. This is a 10 second sequence.
View 2 Replies View Relatedis it possible to have overlapping slices? For example, I typically start a web design in illustrator, then like export pieces to use in in my build. But, I tend to have a lot of overlaping pieces that need to be exported (full static background image for the webpage and banner overlap for example). I find myself, hiding pieces, drawing out a slice, export it, then go back, delete that slice, create another slice . . . as you can see, it gets pretty tedious. Everytime I try to overlap a slices, they just create new slices and I end up with a bunch of rectangle slices all over the artboard.

So I'm working with type, and I want to place a very thick outline around the type it's self.Creating a thick outline unfortuantely doesn't just work, as it aligns it over the text strokes themselves.
Corel has an option to place the outline behind the object (see below)...but alas, illustrator does not... they have the align outside option (far less effective).I want this style without having to duplicate the text, and placing one with an outline behind it:
So when I convert the text to outlines, and apply the outside aligned stroke I get an overlap from the other charactersis there a way to combine objects that aren't overlapping into a single object, so when I align the outline around the text I don't get the above problem, or is there a way to place an outline behind an object without duplicating the object and adding a thick outline?
How I can overlap the words "Highland" and "Park".

I can do all this separately (objects, then grid, then artboard) but it would be nicer to scale everything at once.
I'm trying to automatically create fill shapes out of a pattern I made with stokes. The pattern (see attached) is comprised of overlapping rows of lines. My goal is to make he inner triangle shapes different colours, but I will need an actual shape there before I can add colour.
I've tried playing with the pathfinder tools, but haven't had any luck.

View 8 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to make overlapping arrows in a circle like the ones here. I pretty much have it, but I'm having trouble with how to get the layers right.
Here's what I have so far:
Note that my spacing is a little off, number 1. I tried to rotate each arrow 60 degrees, but it's not perfect.
Secondly, the bottom arrow is above everything, instead of above at the point and below at that base. How does one achieve that feat?
I have no problem dividing objects using the "divide" tool in the Pathfinder palette, but I was wondering if there was a way to divide brush strokes?
For example, let's say you wanted to paint three brush strokes right next to each other, but not overlapping. Is there a way to select all three strokes and then divide them so no one stroke resides over another, they would be completely separate of each other.
I have a problem that consistently occurs in Illustrator CS4 on Leopard that only presents itself when I try to outline paths in dxf files opened in Illustrator that I think have been supplied from and Autocad type software.
I get the unknown Error: OSEG and only some paths outline.
The only way I have found to fix it is to outline paths individually till I find the culprit path or paths and and either find the point in the path that is causing the error and remove it (which can be time consuming), or just delete the path all together and re-create a replacement. It seems to me there is a problem with Illustrator being able to handle certain path information it encounters that is causing the error.
I have been doing the same thing in all versions of Illustrator since the very first version that supported opening dxf files (so quite a few generations of Illustrator, pre CS I think) and this is the first time Illustrator has presented the problem with these types of files specifically.
I drew some strokes and then I was busy on another part of my image then when I looked back at the other part half of my strokes were not visible. Im not sure why. They are still there because I can select them and I can see them in outline mode but they are invisible in preview for some unknown reason. The stroke hasnt changed and the layers are all visible. I restarted and they came back.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI am using a charcaol brush on a stroke in CS6 and when I pick a gradient it just turns the color completely black. The gradient works if I make the stroke basic though. I am guessing it is not possible for whatever reason? I also tried to recolor the artwork but couldnt find any gradient options in there.
I suppose a workaround would to maybe make a duplicate of the stroke, make it a basic shape and blend the 2 or something?

View 16 Replies View Relatedgot an out of the blue commission for a t-shirt .... now I'm getting a crash course in Illusrator. Been using it all of one day.
Here's the trouble though - when I use my brushes to make actual brush strokes, the resulting paths look "grainy" - like they aren't vectors/paths.
From what I understand, even drawing freehand with the brush should produce vectored lines - and I can play with points within those freehand brush strokes. But when I zoom out, the strokes I drew with the brush look almost "pixelly", while the ones done with the pen tool look nice and smooth (I should note this is a custom brush that I made, butt the other paths that I've applied the brush to look fine).
Is this normal? Should I resign myself to having to go back over everything using the pen tool (there's a lot of fine, irregular line work)? Or is there some setting of the brush or special key that I'm missing?I know it's small, but you might be able to see what I mean where the main vertical line meets up with the angled line. The near-vertical is brushed in, the angled one is a path with brush overlay....
I cannot add multiple strokes to a font. The program only allows me to align the strokes to the center. While on shapes it allows me to align the stroke inside, outside, and center. .

I figured to do this, I would simply have to create my background and hide the layers above so I can see what I'm doing. However the few lines that I've created in my background are overlaping the characters, how can I resolve this?
Also after doing a brush or creating a path in general, how do i I deselect it (instead of having to bring out the selection tool and clicking anywhere on the screen)
I jut remembered something else, if i want to select an object but the selection rectangle covers the perimeter of another object, how do I avoid selecting the other object aswell?
How can I draw a continuous stroked line with a fill, so that it overlaps and covers the previously drawn part of the line? I'm trying to draw some text so that it has an effect like in fig. 2 of the attached picture, not fig. 1. Is it possible to make somehow? For a simple image like this I could of course manually remove the few lines, but for a more complex text it's not possible, and I can't seem to find a solution myself.
View 7 Replies View RelatedI'm in the process of drawing a site plan which contains buildings, roads and wooded areas. I want to draw roads which go through the wooded areas. I want both the road and the woods to be opaque except where the woods overlaps the road (I want the wood to be partially transparent at the overlap). Example of the effect I want is shown below. I don't get this effect when trying to use blending transparency modes. I'm sure it can be done with the opacity mask but I've tried all sorts of combinations and not managed to get this effect.
