I need to convert a layered psd file to a vector file but have never used illustrator (cs5). Looking for the steps I need to accomplish this? It is a logo I've created that is all white on a transparent background. I'm on a mac, OS 10.7.4
View 13 RepliesI've been using Illustrator since the late 80's but this request just now came up for the first time, twice in one day: the clients each want me to send them layered files (OK-no problem) wherein all the layers, even the raster layers, register as vector layers. Or at least all the layers, regardless of file-type (vector or raster) are contained within an unflattened Illustrator file. One of the clients specifically asked that the Type layer (No problem-all the type is on one layer) be "vector mapped", whatever that means, while all the other layers can be Photoshop layers, if necessary. So how do I hand them an open, unflattened Illustrator file containing both vector art and raster art? Can it be done in Acrobat, as a PDF? I'm working in AI and PS CS5, but I can and will upgrade if I have to.

I'm trying to Extrude my logo in After Effects CS6 to appear 3D. My understanding is I need to import an Illustrator file (.AI) in order to "Creat Shapes from Vector Layer". I'm having trouble opening a .PSD and then saving it as an .AI. The file is empty when I open it in After Effects.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have a friend who does drawings on paper that he wants to get scalable. The high-level path appears to be scan the image and run autotrace in AI.
As I look at online articles, some suggest taking the raster into PS to erase the pencil marks and ink the image. My friend does the inking on the paper before the scan.
I have some experimenting to do with autotrace settings, but I can see right away that some of the lines on the image vary in width in both PS and AI. And, no matter how good his inking is, there is still quite a bit of "noise" along the lines. His inking also leaves quite a bit of variation in line width. What he wants is a constant width.
My question is: if you want a line to be of constant width and you have a scanned image to work with, which tool (PS, AI) and what technique is best to create the result.
One thought is, rather than try to clean up the line in either tool, the better approach might be to draw a new line using the scanned image as a guide. My concern is that the line won't be smooth if done by hand.

I've been messing around with Live trace for a few days, but every time I try to convert it to Vector, it destroys my gradient, and converts my Pantone to CMYK.
URLs.....What I need to do, is convert to vector while keeping the gradient, and pantone colors in the graphic to prepare for screen printing.Before anyone says "you don't need to use vector for screen printing". We run Corel X4 on our transparency machine, so I need to convert to vector, and keep the halftones fine, as well as keep the pantone color book.It doesn't need to be a "quick" way to do it...it just needs to be done.
I scanned my signature into my computer as a TIFF file. I then edited and cleaned it up in Photoshop. Then I placed it into Illustrator and turned it into a Vector file. The problem with this though is that there are vector paths around the perimeter of the signature and not down the middle of the letter strokes as would be if I had made it in Illustrator. Is there a way that I can still make this happen?
I just converted it back to a tiff file becuas the vector lines were turning into double lines in places. I just enlarged them enough that it hid any gaps and then converted it into a tiff file to have another try at it. Would much rather work with one line though.

Im Relatively experienced with Illustrator and have never come across the term before im assuming they simply mean they want the ai. file with all the layers maintained?
I am using CS6, as is the other user. When they open the file in Illustrator all the artwork is on one layer, even though the original file has numerous layers, and opens with these layers when I open it even now.I have never come across this problem before in all the years I have used Illustrator and have had no joy when trying to search for this problem.

How would I go about achieving the blend of coloring in the front blue wave? I have tried gradient meshes, but they don't handle the curves of the waves very well.

I saved it as a color separated .ps file in hopes that I could then convert that to a tiff. My problem is that when I save the .ps file it saves the color separations, but in grayscale. I need to email this art to the printer, but the file size is too large to email. How do i go about reducing the file size in AI so it still maintains large format print resolution? I'm woring on a custom textile design that needs to be printed on fabric within the CAD-generated garmet production pattern.
The garmet pattern was created in the CAD progrom PAD.
PAD exports .dxf and .txt files. The dxf file imports into AI as text and code. The .txt file is unusable. It's scale is skewed and important information is missing from the file.
I'm working in AI 5.5 on a Mac. I've imported .dxf files from other cad progrms like Optitex no problem.
PAD exports .dxf AAMA. I need to import this into AI, and the AI forums say Illustrator can read .dxf files.
I have 14000 Freehand mx file and need to be able to open them in Illustrator cs6.... how can I convert them to ai files ... I do not have CS4 or CS5....

View 6 Replies View RelatedOur company does not have the funds to upgrade so we are stuck with CD12. I am using using a windows 7 /64 bit machine. I created this xml template for the writers to place place their graphics in our author software.
I have 4 layers on my file - grid.guide,desktop and template. The template has the instructions and size dimensions. I have them put all graphics on the high lited desktop layer then when this is complete turn off the template layer. One can print this file with just the graphics showing with no problem.
However if I export this a PNG file both the template and desktop layers show up even though I turned off all layers. I just want the desktop layer with the graphics to show up. I have been using Adobe Illustrator for several years and this doesn't present a problem when saving the graphic as a PNG file.
The logo on a website needs to be scaled for printing purposes and it was originally created with photoshop without the original .psd layered file. What i have is the .png file which I am looking to convert to vector. I've read from this forum that I can convert to smart object but that is if I had the layered shapes. What is the easiest way to go about doing this?

The file has layers, and I have tried to select just one of the layers to copy and paste into a new AI file, but it doesn't work.
