I just instaloe GIMP a few days ago and was working with a simple project when, somehow, I lost the dialogue box for layers (the one that usually appears on the right of the work space). I am running ubuntu if that makes a difference. I can still see the layers tools in the application bar at the top but can't do what I need to without the actuqal tool box for layers.

View 1 Replies View RelatedI have lost the ability to see my layers. I created an image and when I open it, I can see by the text displayed at the top of the image that it has five layers. However, when I click "Open the Layers Dialog", the five layers don't show. Perhaps I've locked it somehow? It was saved as a .xcf. Am very new to GIMP.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI've been using GIMP for a large image file over the last few weeks. It has many layers, and the file size itself is 1.3 G. The program has crashed a number of times while working on the image, though I have never had any problem with loss of data.
I opened it today to find that only a few of the layers within the image are there. I'm missing the bulk of the file. None of the layers are hidden.
My layers dock has gone missing. According to the list in my 'Windows' tab, it claims to be open. I have looked all over the screen. I have switched on and off again etc. I have even deliberately thrown other docks off the screen to see if they come back to normal screen area if I close and reopen Gimp- and they do. so it isn't lost off screen.
I have unistalled and re-insalled and it has not come back.
1. Go to Windows>recently closed docks - Mine says 'empty'
2. File>create docks - I don't have this option- mine choices are 'new', 'create', 'open', 'open as layers', ''open location', 'open recent'... then a few which pertain to having an image open that you're working on... then 'quit'.
3. I went to Youtube and the tutorials on how to make your Gimp like Photoshop and how to get back closed windows also haven't worked.
I'm on Gimp 2.6.
i know how to apply a filter to my Layers dialogue box - i use this often to just show local layers when i have a .dwg with a few xrefs in it, each of which have heaps of layers within themselves, and i don't need to see the xref layers etc
How to do a similar thing to the Properties bar layer field?
until now, when i needed to change the layer of an entity, i click on the little arrow on the RHS of this drop down field in the properties bar, and then have to seek out my layer name, which could be amongst the hundreds of xref layer names, depending on the naming conventions used etc.
i know with perfect naming convensions or by putting a "0" in front of my local layers, then at least all of mine will be grouped together at the top, but is there a way to bypass that option to ONLY show local layers???
I am trying to find a command that will pull up a dialogue box with all layers that are frozen and be able to select one or more to thaw from that list. I hate the layer manager, it's too slow especially when I have a ton of layers to deal with.
View 9 Replies View Relatedhow to lock in a dialogue box . I have tried to lock in the tools dialogue box to the panel on the side of the window, but everytime I select it it disappears. Sometimes it goes behind the panel. In the help screen it says you can drag a dialogue box over a "Blue" line and it will anchor it there. I cant see any blue line? There is some text that say "you can drag a dialogue box to this panel", but when you drag it, it does not stay there.

Windows 7 64 bit user.
Upgraded to 2.8 with total deletion of the Gimp folder to try to address this.
File / Open Recent works fine.
File / New etc same all good...
File / Open has a problem.
Once that window opens the product is hung.
There is no window to type the file name in, and I cannot click on any of the disk drive names.
I must admit that I have a good number of network and usb as well as physical drives. I do not think that any have changed names, but it seems clear that something like a path change is responsible?
How to repair a stuck File/Open dialogue.
I can't get the Tool Options dialogue box to re-dock to the toolbar. I've looked at a few other threads, but they haven't worked. I'll attach screencaps if I need to.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI'm on MacOS 10.9 (Mavericks). Using GIMP 2.8.8 (lisanet edition).
GIMP has been installed for many years on my computers, but first since it runs natively (without x11 or xQuartz) have I finally and entirely switched to GIMP for my raster graphic work.
I really like GIMP and I'm working on expanding my knowledge and respect this excellent programme very much. There are of course a couple of oddities when you are used to Photoshop (until 3 months ago). I'm getting there. Though one issue sticks out:
The use of the eyedropper tool for example in the Color to Alpha Dialogue. First of all I'm aware about the difference between the Color Picker (set colour from image pixels) in the toolbox and the eyedropper. I'm writing here about the latter. It simply doesn't work at all. When I open Color to Alpha... and then click on the color field (by default it's white #ffffff) the Color to Alpha Color Picker opens. When I select here the Eyedropper tool (Click the eyedropper, then select a color anywhere on your screen to select that color.) the following scenario happens: the cursor doesn't indicate a particular function (stays as standard pointer) - when clicking anywhere on my screen both dialogues, Color to Alpha and Color to Alpha Color Picker disappear (respectively they slip behind the main GIMP interface). I can't select any color! And when I manage to get the two dialogue windows back into focus, I have to wait a certain amount of time before any pressing of OK or Cancel shows any response.
Sometimes a random color gets selected but this is beyond my influence.
I guess it's a weak spot of the new native GIMP without any X11 wrapping. The windows managements has several weaknesses (i.e. GIMP/Hide). I also thought that it might be caused by the Single-Window Mode. But even without that the problem remains. All in all it's a very important function and without it the workflow involved gets very tiresome.
"Image > Print Size" really IS the command you are looking for.
The key is to pay attention to the units-of-measure shown on the Print Size dialogue box:- The "Width" and "Height" values under Print Size are displayed in real-world units (inches, mm, etc.), not image pixels.- The "Resolution" values are displayed in pixels-per-unit.- You cannot change your image's pixel dimensions (aka scale the image) from the Print Size dialogue. That's what the "Scale Image" command is for.Remember the relation between pixel and print sizes is:(print size) = (pixel size) / (print resolution)
When you change the image's print resolution, of course the real-world size (the "width" or "height" shown in the Print Size dialog) of your image will update to reflect the new print resolution -- that value is calculated from your image's actual pixel size and whatever resolution value you just entered. This is totally normal behavior -- in fact, it's expected. If you change an image's resolution from, say, 150 pixels/inch to 75 pixels/inch, this doubles the print size of your image but only the print size; the image's pixel size remains precisely the same as before. (You can confirm this by comparing "Image > Canvas Size..." before and after changing the resolution.)
And as others have stated, if you're using the image for Web viewing then its print resolution has absolutely zero effect on how it will appear onscreen (print resolution only affects, well, actual printing), in which case you'll want to use the "Scale Image" command to actually scale your image larger or smaller.
I scanned a drawing I made as a .jpeg, opened it in PS CS4, converted the background to a layer, added a curves adjustment layer, and when I try any of Flatten Image or Save as Jpeg the results disregards all or part of the effects of the adjustment layer. The same happens for a levels adjustment layer . I have attached the original jpeg and the .psd with the curves adjustment layer.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI know the title sounds weird, but I am having trouble keeping my levels from reverting back to their default look when saving as a jpeg or attempting to flatten or merge my layers. I can attach a link to the PDS if you would like to take a look at it. The layer that is losing its levels settings is called "Stars". I don't change my levels often, so I am sure its something I am just missing. The levels are just changes on a single layer, as stated above its the layer called "Stars".
View 3 Replies View RelatedI was working on a picture; I had no other programs running and out of the hundreads of photos Ive edited, nothing like this has ever happened.
It was going to my best edit ever and the file size in GIMP was a little over 1.02GB which is fine. Right when I added some HVS Noise to a portion of the image the little green loading bar froze at the end but the effect sti'll worked. I go to move the layer down and everything just stopped.
I cannot re-make that image. I loaded the task manager and created a DMP in hope that I may be able to read it.
Is there anyway to get all that progress back? the DMP file is 290MB so I'm thinking that it saved everything but I could be wrong. I have not loaded GIMP since.
I'm running GIMP on a Mac.So I was happily editing a photo, everything going perfectly great, when I must have inadvertently hit a certain key, and now the bottom half of the toolbox is gone.In its place is a message that reads "You can drag dockable dialogs here."
If I want to use the clone tool, I can't see where to choose a brush and select its size. If I zoom into an image. I don't have the Zoom Out tool to click on. I want it to be the way it was, with the Toolbox Option located directly below the toolbox, the way it was when I first got it.
I'm trying to put a GIF into a Kindle book. The GIF itself looks great, and I'm pretty darn good at formatting books if I do say so myself.
For some reason, the black in my GIF images are becoming transparent once loaded to a Kindle mobi file. Now I've used GIFs from Gimp like this before, so it doesn't really make any sense... I've not done anything (as far as I know) to make it transparent, and it's definitely not transparent in the GIF itself.
I tried changing the color of the text, but that hasn't made any difference, so I'm led to believe it's something I'm doing wrong with the text tool, but what that could be.
I mistakenly installed CorelDRAW and found out not what I hoped for, uninstalled, but now a bunch of Gimp file associations are gone!! like patterns and gradients and other things are no longer associated with Gimp! how do I get those file association back for Gimp?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI've got a Macbook Pro running X11(ver 2.3.6) and Gimp 2.6.11 and have had no problems with either until recently. I'm a professional artist with about 5 solid years of experience using Gimp and I love it. I actually own Photoshop and spend more time overall in the Gimp. But now, all of a sudden, I have no ability to do anything it it except rifle through the menus. Absolutely nothing works in the image window because the mouse will not click anywhere inside it. Its the same whether I use the build in touch pad, a USB 3-button mouse or my Wacom Intuos 3 tablet. I know, or at least strongly suspect, that its a focus issue because I can click on a menu item and drop the menu, but clicking outside the menu onto the image area does not collapse the menu! I've searched and searched and I'm at a loss. My Gimps BROKE!

Recently I have shifted to Gimp 2.8. I also use picasa to createdescription and upload purpose. Image descriptions created by picasa isgetting lost if I export (after edits) in gimp. Gimp is replacing existingdescription with "x-default".

After I open a create new image, the cursor disappears and the last tool I choose (rectangle...) appears and the cursor (arrow) disappears. Is this standard or is there a way to exit from the tool box and use just the arrow cursor?
my gimp 2.8.6 makes majority normal layers turn into text layers..
Even if i "discard text information" from layer..and then save it as .xcf it doesnt work! Same layers appear as text layers when i open that .xcf Its not a big deal but it really slows me down when im working with layers..
I merged my layers down to scale to proportion and I thought I was done with the project, so I saved it and exported. I then learned that I did something incorrectly, so I went back to the project only to remember I merged the layers and I don't know how to undo that. How do you revert the layers back to layers?
View 4 Replies View Relatedyou've zoomed in to start this painstaking freehand selection withlots and lots of points, and when you get to the end, nothing getsselected. Then you notice that, once again, you had done a Select Allsome time ago (invisible because you zoomed in) and forgotten to SelectNone before clicking the lasso.
What do people do to avoid this? (I know the obvious answer is "rememberto check what your selection is all the time", but that's seriouslyflow-disruptive.)
GIMP could blink the image or something when you add selectionpoints that don't increase/decrease the already selected area, but Iguess that might take some time to implement.

Question 1: how do I get rid of the ants? I've googled on how to deselect, but can't can't find an answer
Question 2: I don't know what I do... but by selecting other tools or just clicking around like mad - the ants go away. Yippeee! Except... damn! The layer has now gone into the background and I can't move it around any more
how I can put my layers into groups now, but there are a few problems I've seen pop up.
First are foremost, when I disable the visibility on a group, if I use the move tool it will select layers from that group that were visible before the group was made invisible. Seriously, there is absolutely no reason whatsoever that I would ever want to move an individual layer that I can't see. This clearly is a glitch and needs to be fixed.
Second of all there is an issue with a layer's mode when it is in a group. For example, if a layer is set to multiply, if it is set in a group it will only multiply on layers within that group. Now this I can see a good use for, but honestly, it is not how I usually want to use layers. I'm not usually trying to separate the actual graphics in my image, I'm just trying to organize my massively long layer dialogue into something more useful. It's great to collect different aspects of my image and keep them all together. But basically every time I need a multiply layer or other effect, I need it to effect the whole image. To keep it effecting an entire image I have to make two separate groups, each above and below the layer, in order to organize my image.
Now, since there is certainly an advantage that could be given by not having such layers have any effect outside of their group, I can't argue that the feature should be removed. However, I do think it would be fantastic if a property could be added to a layer group that would allow for such layers to effect the image outside of the group or not.
The third thing I have to say about groups is linking. First of all, as it stands, when I activate linking on a layer group it has absolutely no effect, making the option redundant. However, what would be useful is if I could link an entire group to itself and then move every layer within a group in tandem.
Often times I want to move several groups of layers around so I can arrange a composition. For a simple example, maybe I have several images of characters, each built with a layer for flats, lighting, textures, etc. And to arrange the composition I want to move the whole character with all its layers to one spot, then grab another character with all of its layers to another spot.Conventionally, there are only two ways I can do this. Either I flatten each of those groups and move them as single layers, destroying my ability to alter them with any level of convenience, or I have to manually link every layer for that character, move it, un-link every layer, link all the layers in another character, and repeat.But it would be so much nicer if I could link all the layers within several groups, and move each group as a whole without moving any other layers.
Since the link option on a layer group doesn't do anything anyway, it seems reasonable to me that enabling it should have that exact effect. Using the same example, if I have each character in its own group, I activate the link option on all of those groups all at once, and then I can grab a layer on any group and that whole group will move, but not any other layers.Even if it automatically linked all the layers in that group to all other linked layers, it would still be much easier to activate and deactivate the link on just one group each time I move that one group, rather than each individual layer.
GIMP example.docx (Size: 141.1 KB / Downloads: 31) I just found about GIMP several days ago. I really like the features that are offered and cant wait to dive in and play around with it. However, I am getting a bit discouraged because it is not working on my computer the way it does when I visited some u-tube videos. So far I have a problem with the layers. I selected, new, added two layers, therefore I had three layers to work with. When I would toggle between the layers the picture didn't change at all, the screen only allowed me to view the last picture I imported. So, I thought I would hide the third picture and work with the second to see what would happen. I scaled the second picture and it scaled them all (note: the pictures where not linked). I have uninstalled and reinstalled the program and it still did the same thing. I am working with Windows 7 if that makes any difference?
