GIMP :: How To Change Layer Opacity
May 6, 2012How do you change the layer opacity?
View 1 RepliesHow do you change the layer opacity?
View 1 RepliesI just downloaded GIMP 2.8 (on Windows 7) and was using the layer groups to organize a project I'm doing. I noticed that whenever I put the layers into the layer group, nothing I do to them actually affects the image (for example if I change the opacity of the layer, it doesn't actually change). If I drag them out of the layer group they function perfectly; sometimes if I edit them and then drag them into the group they also work fine.
As I was writing this post I tested dragging a layer set to "dodge" into the group and it didn't work. It kept the dodge setting, but it looked as if it was on normal; however, I drug another layer set on dodge into the group and it worked fine.
Is this feature just broken on Windows, or does it not work like I thought (where you can drag them in and edit them individually, or edit them all by editing the layer group itself)?
I wanted to know what the best way was to create this? I was going to make a bunch of hexagons and change the opacity but this would take ages and be all over the place.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have a layer with semi-transparent pixels and I want to change there opacity to 100%. Or use some tool to change there opacity gradually by hand.
Is this possible at all in Adobe Photoshop CS5?
I was trying painting with gimp and there is a shortcut in gimp to change the size of the brush/opacity my moving the stylus like you can on photoshop or sketchbook pro.
ALT+ctrl on a mac
This would be an incredible time-saver for us artists and not very complex. If not I will suggest this feature to the gimo developers.
I have two objects intersecting each other on different layers. The object on the top layer I reduced the opacity for and the bottom layer which was previously hidden now is shining through. I do not want this to happen. I want the bottom layer to remain hidden beneath the top layer despite the lowered opacity. How would I accompish this simply? I have CS2.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI have created my own graphics from scratch with GIMP, but the resolution to this issue is eluding me.
I imported a GIF map and want to add red labels. I have no problem adding the labels, but I cannot seem to get the text colored red. Before I create the text layer, the text tool shows the color is red, but it still creates it black. All of the suggestions I've seen (yes, I've read the fine manual) reference the same things, including dragging the color from the foreground color (which I've also changed to red). Nothing I've tried seems to work. I've even saved the image as an XCF, but I have the same problem.
Is it possible to automate the following: I have a directory of about 50 jpg files. With each file I would like to:
- make the image square, by increasing the canvas size of the least dimension. ie if the width is less than the height, increase the width to the value of the height, or conversely if the height is less than the width
- add a transparency layer
- save to xcf
I was just wondering what the practical difference was between the Opacity of a layer and the transparency of a layer. They seem to have the same effect, but I reckon that Adobe wouldn't have seperated them for no good reason.
View 2 Replies View RelatedIf I set a layer's opacity or layer fill opacity to be 50%, often I'll later realize that though it still looks to be a 50%, the setting now says 100%, meaning that I can't make it opaque again. What did I do wrong?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI am creating shadows for a large file, so my opacity is set to 50%. When I copy and paste shadows (such as or multiple windows to save time) they paste back at 100%. I have to constantly flip layers and change, and its very tedious. Plus, when I get to the point of flattening them all, if they are not all at 100% then whatever opacity they are at BECOMES 100%, so I cant change it again later.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI've been using Photoshop CS2 for several years to enhance my photographs, but just now have encountered something simple I cannot find out how to do. I have on the background layer a picture of a room interior with the exposure set mostly for the open window, but the rest of the room is very dark. On the only other layer, the upper one, I have the same shot exposed correctly for the room, which overexposes the window area. The upper and lower layers are perfectly superimposed, and the upper layer is at 100% opacity.
I have selected the window on the upper layer and want to change the selected area's opacity to blend properly with the window on the bottom layer without changing opacity of the rest of the layer. No matter what I do, changing opacity seems to affect only the entire layer, and I haven't figured out how to isolate the selected area for the opacity change.
I can cut the selection to reveal the darker window on the bottom layer, but this doesn't give me the flexibility I need to balance the two exposures. An opacity change would be ideal.
In the image below on the larger element i have a stroke with 0% Opacity but as you can see the stroke is white when it should be transparent? I even changed the blending mode to multiply and the white color stroke still remains. I put the Opacity on 0% to test if something was wrong and this confirms it.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI am creating a logo that is a series of six equally sized graphics, arranged in a circle and overlapping, sort of like the Olympic Circles, but in once circle rather than two lines. I want only the parts that overlap to be less opaque, so that in that one sliver, you can see both of them at the same time. I want the rest of each circular graphic to remain at 100% opacity. Each circle graphic is a separate layer. How do I do that?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI wanna 'blend' two photos together.
My plan was to have one photo in the bottom layer.
then adding a layer with the second photo. Then I let that layer go from the left (100% opacity) to the right (0% opacity).
But how do I do that.
In my example with only colors I have used motion blur. But I can't do that in my photos cause then one of the photos get very blury.
Com Illustrator: in CharacterAttributes of character object, i can't find opacity object. How change value of opacity attribute of character in vb.net?
View 5 Replies View RelatedI have a corrupt version or if there's a setting I'm not aware of. When I try to change the size of my canvas on screen (zoom in or out) but don't want to take the time to select the magnifying glass tool, I typically just type a percentage in the small percentage box lower left corner of my canvas.Sometimes this works fine. Sometimes it doesn't and it actually changes the opacity of whatever layer I'm on instead?? I don't want it to serve this function. I can change opacity in my layers pallette. How can I turn this function off?
View 3 Replies View RelatedWhen i apply an inside stroke with transparency to a layer, the opacity seems to cause a knock-out effect on the layer itself rather than applying the transparent stroke.
How do i apply a semi transparent inside stroke without making the object it's applied to become transparent rather than the stroke itself?
I just started using GIMP last week
I'm trying to put a watermark on an image using the opacity bar for the text. However, the text remains 100% opaque until I get down to 50% opacity, at which point it completely disappears. I thought there may be something wrong with the text layer (not sure if that's the right term.. layers and paths, etc. are all new to me), so I tried it with other tools such as the eraser and the same problem occurs. Is there a bug in my program or am I just really new at this?
When I move the opacity slider, it doesn't change until it hits 50% - then it disappears. It also shows up as pure solid or purely missing, when I try to use it on my website.
How do I get 60% opacity on an image?
I've imported some linework from sketchbook, and despite the tool being set to draw at 100% opacity, my lines are partially transparent.
I want to increase their opacity, but drawing over all the lines again would be terrible.
The lines are all a solid black (although I have another layer with various colors) so there should be some simple operation I can do to adjust that opacity, but I can't figure out what.
It used to be that if I took, for example, a flattened image, and I duplicated it as a new layer (cmd-J), inverted it, and set to 50% opacity, it more or less cancelled to a flat grey. This is how it was from photoshop 3 through CS5. I just noticed that is not the behavior in 13.0.4, rather fill acts as opacity used to, while opacity now solarizes. Is this a bug or is there some reason for the change?
View 5 Replies View RelatedImage is 800px x 150px, i want to change the opacity in the top left of the image for a rectangular section of 300px x 50px.
So i thought i would highlight the section(300px x 50px) with the rectanglar marquee tool, which gives a dotted rectangle, now i thought by changing the opacity slider over on the right side in the layers palet then this would work, but instead the opcaity for the whole image is still changed, how do i have only the section i want to change the opcaity for?
When running an action, I click in the opacity box and change it to 65.
Yet in the action I see a step for changing to 6 and then for 65.
It really seems to be touchy. What is the exacty keystroke to get in that box?
I was wondering is there an option where you can dim or change the opacity of a drawn line? Similar to when you can change the linetype and linewieght, is there a precentage that allows to dim lines? Like when you insert .pdf plans as underlay, and you can actualy reduce the opacity. So that when you plot the plan drawing, some lines look solid black, but some are almost impossible to see? Or should I just change the colour of the line to light gray?
View 5 Replies View RelatedA problem has developed in my photoshop CS 6 64 bit on windows 7. I can't paint at full opacity in a layer mask. It is like an 75 % opacity brush. I have gone back to the default brushes soit is not the particular bursh. My brush settings are all at 100%, mask density is 100% , the blend mode is normal,-can't think of where else to look for the solution. The brush works just fine when I am not in a layer mask.I updated the graphic card driver and also the wacom intuos driver. It has to be somewhere in photoshop CS6 as when I go into my older version photoshop, cs5, the mask opacity works works at 100 % opacity.
View 6 Replies View Related(I am using version 2.6.12). I noticed that when I move the Opacity Slider, nothing happens on the image. I tried that on Windows, Linux (I am using Gimp version 2.6.11 on OpenSUSE 11.4), and Mac. I read somewhere that I need to go to Image --> Modify and select RGB. But it is already selected.
View 1 Replies View Relatedis it possible to rotate a layer in gimp with the opacity turned on?
everytime i rotate something the object becomes a full solid even though i had set it with an opacity.
Opacity is shown along with Diameter and Hardness, when Alt - Right click is done while using a round brush (in this case, with the Dodge tool).I guess it's late, but I don't sense a gesture that causes the Opacity to change in this mode. I tried all the modifier keys and moving the mouse every which way. I even tried the scroll wheel, but couldn't get the Opacity to change.
How do I change the Opacity (besides the old traditional way)?
How can I change the opacity of a single object in AutoCAD 2008?
View 9 Replies View Relatedwhere i cant see the opacity( you know like 100% and so on) its the same with audio level, position, scale etc. here's a print screen of it [URL]
The reson why it dissapeared is because when i pressed L-L on my keyboard to show the audio waves, but instead i must have pressed something wrong or maybe the layer the layer want selected.
