GIMP :: How To Make A Basic Color Filter
Nov 1, 2011
I want to make a basic color filter over my image that, for instance, filters out every color that isn't red. so everything that was red would show up as normal and everything that was blue or green would show up as black.
How do I do that in gimp?

This seems like a simple task, but I've had trouble matching up with it well. I have graphics of some book pages, and would like to make them glow/radiate very similar to this video from a Star Wars documentary:
The main issue so far is just making it really look like it's glowing, rather than just everything getting brighter. I tried Filters > Aristic > Softglow, but that didn't work too well.

I am trying to make basic templates for a collectible card game. The first step is creating the card in the correct shape and making a border. Here is what I did so far :
1. Create a new project in the appropriate size
2. Create an alpha layer
3. Select rounded rectangle to round the edges
4. Invert selection and delete
Now I have a nice card in the correct size and the correct shape. This is where the problem comes in . I want all cards to have a uniform border around the outer edge and I cant quite get this right.
I duplicated the layer and resized it to create the same shape in a smaller size to make this border, but when I show both layers the rounded corners on the smaller sized layers still show up as square. If I show only that smaller layer though, I can see that it has rounded corners.

I'm in the process of making a command map for the free video game Wolfenstein Enemy Territory.
The games allows to generate a TGA file called Tracemap, which is used by the game to detect which places are outside or inside, for precipitations and artillery. It is commonly used as a base to make command maps, such as:
Other examples:
[URL].......
To obtain a comparable result, I have decomposed the making in 4 steps (4 layers):
- The terrain (background);
- The buildings (in shade of grey);
- The roads (a tool drawing white lines bordered with black and doing the junctions automatically would be neat, if it ever exists...?);
- The "foldings" (that's the Reverso translation, I think it can be guessed from the pic).
So, I exported the terrain in a separated map, compiled it, generated a Tracemap, and I have it in GIMP now. I would like GIMP to detect and do some lines between the different levels like Paint Shop Pro seems to do:
[URL]........
This way, I can draw the height lines accurately, and then color (I already made the palette with required colors); Does this exist in GIMP? Tried few filters but never came close to something like in the Warchest forums.
If it isn't possible I will do it manually ^^'

Is there a way to make the color select tool not only select a specific color but related shades as well. I have a graphic that is mainly shades of gray but with black outlines and divisions as well as other colors mixed in. I want to shift all the shades of gray to shades of dark yellow without have to select each shade individually.

Is there a tool I can use to gradually make a color lighter? The dodge/burn tool only makes it one shade lighter for the color that is highlighted by the cursor.
So lets say I start with a dark purple I need something that will decrease the shade as I move my mouse, kinda like the smudge thingy...

I am trying to color a sketch I made and have thus far (successfully??) created a white background, an ink layer and a color layer. They are in multiply mode. The file I am working with is not GIF or JPEG, it's XCF.
Color is set to 100%, mode is normal. And yes, the image mode IS set to RGB.
I had selected a small color palette and filled an ellipse shape with it. Fine so far. I wanted to make another ellipse within this one and make it a different color. This did not work. I don't know how many options I tried, incl. exiting the program and starting again, to no avail. Somehow (how this worked) ONE additional color worked (very similar to the first). But no black, for example, no green, nothing.
Yesterday I finished a picture (my first attempt using GIMP or any software, at least for art) and I was super happy with the result. It's not working.

as you can see I was able to make the background transparent by 'select by color' + 'add alpha channel' + 'remove selected area' but I also need to remove the white behind the 50% opaque reddish orange flames as well, i cannot select the white by 'select by color' or 'magic wand select' or any of the selection tools because of the issues of the white / reddish orange mix of opacity, so I need removing this white behind the part opacity color.

I am making an image which will act as a border for a website. So i am using a color to blend to two together.
Which i thought would be easy seen as i had the HEX code for the color i was using. I have set the background of my page to the color (#CCFF99), and i have tried to fill in my image with the same color, but when they are both on the page, they look like a completly different shade.
Am i doing something wrong, or am i asking too much that i want the same shade on both an image and a page. I thought that was one of the plus points to HEX codes, so that i could have the same shade over and over!

How to use a photo behind cut out text and everything was going fine until I tried to add text and change the color. The text is invisible even though I changed the color to white and the box resized itself really small and I can't see anything even though I set it to 150 px.
Try to unchecking the 'dynamic text' button but I don't see this button anywhere in my text tab.
I have never been able to successfully use GIMP for anything because of this problem with adding text. I have had 2 versions, Windows and Linux. Right now I am using it with Pangolin.

I've tried saving images with sRGB color profile, Adobe RGB, and even NO color profile.
While each test has yielded various saturation levels (sRGB seems more saturated than Adobe RGB), the one single constant in all of them is that IE displays more (too?) colorful images than FF.
I understand that IE doesn't color manage while FF does, but that hardly explains the results I'm getting. If I don't color manage a document, shouldn't it display the same way in IE and FF? And how to explain that the sRGB profile documents are more saturated in IE than the Adobe RGB ones, if IE cannot read color profiles? And why does FF display *both* sRGB and Adobe RGB as less saturated than these same images in IE?

Corel's strategy worked: I've given up the dumbhead's reliance on X4's color-management-off technique and am learning color management.
I have X5 running on an LED monitor with pretty good colors, outputting to an old Epson Photo Stylus 2200 inkjet printer. All I really need (right now) is to print out renderings of signs for customers' approval. I've made up a simple grid of Cyan-Magenta-Yellow (first row) and Red-Green-Blue (second row) using pure values from the color mixer:
Colors look decent enough on the RGB monitor, and the top row prints fine (printer is CMYK, after all). Red and Green on the second row are a little pale, but acceptable. It's the Blue that's the problem: I've divided the box to show the screen blue (upper left) and print blue (lower right); the latter is dark purple. Is this a gamut problem? Hard to believe the printer can't get any closer than that.

I have a basic image and I just want to remove the background and be LEFT just with the image (i.e. No white background).
I have opened the image with Gimp and on this image I was able to "add alpha channel" which I believe needs to be done. Do I need to do anything after I add the Alpha channel?
This is what I did next:
The image is 100% and background 1.1mb. Select Fuzzy tool and position cursor over the background and click. The image and the image background have the moving dashes going around them.
Next I hit the delete key and the background goes checkered. Still there are the moving dashes around the image and the background outer square. Next I hit autocrop and I am left with a reduced checkered background around the image.
My question - what do I do from here. I just want the image with no background what so ever; also is there anything I need to do with saving too.
Previously I have saved this and when I go to use the image it appears to be much the same as the original with a white background.

How do I solve this problem I cannot join basic lines to make a closed polyline as they will not join together. So i tried to use the flatten command which does not work and out puts error below:-
Command Prompt Input/ouput
Command: FLATTEN
Select objects to convert to 2d...8 found
Remove hidden lines? <No>:

For years I've been using various image editors, often in combination. That is, I do simple stuff as copy / paste and repositioning of elements in one editor and subsequently open the image in a more advanced editor for proper paintwork. Currently I'm using the Gimp for the latter. Color layers work brilliantly. However, I have big problems with my alpha channel--I've found no way to edit it within Gimp and I've found no way to import a revised version that I've edited in another image editor. There must be solutions to both challenges.
The editing I require is piece-of-cake in basic image editors--I simply want to move a transparent region a bit to the left. That should be a simple rectangle selection and then shoving it (mouse or arrow keys) to where I want it. Alternatively I could import my edited alpha channel image as I'm used to doing in other editors. Well, the Gimp will accept the image as a layer all right but I haven't succeeded in making the Gimp import my grayscale image as an alpha channel. I get a grayscale non-transparent layer instead.
So, I've got a perfectly good alpha channel that needs a minor tweak. It loads as intended in Gimp. How to perform basic editing of this alpha channel layer or tell me how to import a revised version and tell Gimp that this image should be interpreted as an alpha channel?

So I've created a few different blocks of text, which appear as different layers in the layers dialog box.
The area I've created them in 640x400. The various words placed together is much smaller though. So I want to crop the image to just be their size. However, attempting to select all the text bits fails, as I seem to be confined to whatever layer I last clicked on the layers dialog box. e.g. The word "shop" is selected, and highlighting all words using results in only the word "shop" being active to work with.
How do I unselect a layer, or choose all of them??

make this filter on the picture? The left side pic is the normal one and the right side pic is the filtered one by the way, this filter is called "instant" if you have iphone with new iOS7 (you will find the filter in camera or while editing pic from photo)
filter makes pic a bit sharper, yellowish a bit with keeping the textures of the pic..i tried to play with levels and brightness but couldn't really get it..if you have iphone with iOS7 you might wanna take pic and try the effect to see how it changes the pic.

Got a problem here with the map to object filter, or maybe it's just a case of it can't do what I want it to. I thought it best to ask here to find out for sure.
s.xcf (Size: 146.5 KB / Downloads: 30)
The circle at the top and in the foreground is the one that I want to map to a cylinder, but no matter what I do I can't seem to get ride of the other two circles, the one at the bottom and the one in the background. I can erase them after the mapping's finished but I was hoping to find a way to prevent them appear in the first place.

I have a digital camera by Pentax called the Optio. It has one of the best features ever which lets you take a standard picture the go in to options and choose to filter out any color except shades of blue or shades of red or shades of green, thus everything else goes black and white. Can someone help figure out how to do that in photoshop?

I just want to CG my drawing, and usually the way I do this is by adding a filter called "Poster edges" to my drawing. I then spend a while cleaning up the drawing and making the poster edges look nice and styleized from there.
The problem is that filters from the filter gallery seem to only change the color to black. I really just want to change everything that gets "Poster edged" to a brownish color.

If I have a picture that is partly distorted by a color filter, is there any way I can negate the color distortion? For example, if I had a picture like this:
where I can use the sky or grass or bricks as reference points, how would I cancel out the color and make the whole picture look normal?
