GIMP :: Display Color Channels In Grayscale?
Nov 11, 2012
Is there a preference in GIMP to display color channels in grayscale? Rather I should ask, has this issue been resolved because I know at one time it was a big difference between PS and the GIMP. And yes, I know that I can decompose and recompose...

How do I quickly separate an image's channels into grayscale layers? I'll need to do this frequently, so is there an automated way? If there isn't, can it be done with python scripting? Would it take me a long time to learn how to write such a script assuming I know a bit of Python (as used in Blender), but haven't done any scripting with GIMP?

I cannot bring up Layers, Channels, or Paths. Running Gimp 2.6.10 on a Windows 7 machine. Selecting Windows...Dockable Dialogs...Layers or Channels or Paths does not bring up a new dialog window. Also there is nothing in Windows...Recently Closed Docs
This occurs regardless of image file opened. Not sure how long this has been the situation as I have not been using gimp on the computer where this problem is occurring for a couple months. Am not an advanced user though have used it occasionally for years. All other Selecting Windows...Dockable Dialogs... actions bring up window boxes normally. Tab does toggle display for the Toolbox etc. Just Layers, Channels, or Paths have an issue and I suspect it may have occurred because they were sharing the same window box. I did reset Preferences.
I am able to readily create layers on top of a base image but without the dialog box, only have access to the last one created. Also can merge down the last new layer or flatten the image. My suspicion is gimp may be displaying the dialog box at XY coordinates beyond my monitor screen displayable coordinates. There is a configuration file that saves the last used settings that I can simply delete?

I need to convert an image to Grayscale in CS2, but I need to retain my RGB channels. I need them because a special bump map tool that I have, which also converts images to DDS format, requires them. And I need to make my bumpmaps with this tool because of the special format that dds files require for the game I am using these textures in.
I've been using the Photocopy filter, but I feel it leaves the image a bit "dirty." I'd like a clean Grayscale conversion.

I have three different pictures in separate files, and I want to overlay them as red, green and blue channels in a new file. (the images represent the different color channels obtained from fluorescence microscopy, and I just want them back in one picture).
I guess it´s pretty easy, but I don´t manage to get all 3 pictures into 1 as 3 separate channels.

I need to transform a selection of ranges of grayscale image in colors. For example: using GSM of a gray scale image as a parameter I want to recode pixels from 0 to 20 in red, 21 to 40 in orange, 41 to 60 in yellow and so forth... until pixel valued 256 in GSM.

Why are the image thumbnails in the channels pallet not showing up as grayscale images? They used to, and for some reason or another aren't any more for me. Instead, they are showing up red, green, and blue for each respective channel. I'm on Mac, using CS6.

I have an image that has elements pasted in from PNG files, and those elements have some shades of green. I want printed output in gray scale only, so I did Image -> Mode->Grayscale. The image on screen went gray as I wanted. When I print it, however, I get an image in which *some* of the colored parts still are colored!

The project is a photo montage. It was 4-color, now must become 2 colors. So I've changed each of the original 4-color photos (jpg and eps) into separate psd files (as grayscale/duotone/montage-and assigned it One pantone color)
Â
In a new psd "montage" file, I plan to place each photo on its own layer, adjust tints, transparency, etc, to create one new montage/flattened.I'm not sure which color mode is best when setting up this new file, CMYK or grayscale?
Â
Once the PSÂ doc is done, the job will be saved as a PDF for 2-color printing.I want to insure the 2 pantone colors separate properly at press.

I have a color picture, and I want to convert it to B&W, and then I want to add another color to it (for example – red). I don’t want to paint some areas in it, I want for example to keep all the red parts of the picture, or only part of the red parts.
It something like in the movie Schindler's List, in the B&W scene where you see a little girl with red coat.

Some .BMP files.
I need to save some images with transparency that are in .BMP format, but said images seem to have what's called an alpha channel, which covers all of the image's background and not the transparency that I need. I've tried to use the "Convert color to alpha" option, but it appears that that only works in the image that I want and not in the alpha channel itself (yeah, I didn´t know what alpha channel was until then).
I leave an example of one of the various .BMP files that I want converted to .PNG with transparency.

is there a way to view the RGB channels luminosity only? It seems I have to shut off two channels just to view one, and that one will be colored (red, green, or blue). How can I just view the channel in grayscale? Is this possible? Do I always have to shut two channels off to view one?
Also, I take it there are no adjustment layers in GIMP, correct?

Is there anything that can be done using an alpha channel, that can'tbe done using masks and layers, or vice versa? Context of question: I've worked extensively with masks and layers.I've never worked with alpha channels. For example:
Using an alpha channel:
1. Open two single layer images, A and B, neither one of which has analpha channel.
2. Drag the image B over to A and close B.3. Now image A has two layers, A and B. Put layer A on top, selectlayer A, set the blend mode to Normal, and add an alpha channel.4. Erase part of layer A, where-ever you want layer B to show through. At this point, layer A has an alpha channel with white where you wantlayer A to show, and black where you want layer B to show, but it doesnot have a mask.
OR
Using a layer mask:
1. Open two single layer images, A and B, neither one of which has analpha channel.
2. Drag image B over to A and close B.3. Now image A has two layers, A and B. Put layer A on top, selectlayer A, and set the blend mode to Normal (don't add an alphachannel).
4. Create a solid white mask for layer A. Paint black on the maskwhere you want layer B to show through. At this point, layer A has a mask with white where you want layer A toshow, and black where you want layer B to show., but it does not havean alpha channel.
In both cases, using a mask or using an alpha channel, the net resultis the same.So again, is there anything that can be done using an alpha channel, that can't be done using masks and layers, or vice versa?

Here is my problem;
•Need to plot entire drawing in Greyscale, with that in mind I need to select X number of objects in the drawing to plot in Color. So in the end I will have a complete drawing in greyscale and a selection of objects in color so they stand out.
•Now, I know I can do this through the .ctb file but I have many colors / layers and many objects so this will take a long time to do.
•Is there an app or override option I can use to do this?

Basically, I am trying to use an alpha layer/channel to export a picture that is transparent except for a grass clump that is colored green over the alpha layer. So the picture looks like a solid green rectangle, but is actually a green blade of grass.
Problem is, I cannot get the alpha layer to work. I can't follow the tutorial as it is in photoshop, and random videos on-line haven't worked.
(Here is the tutorial: [URL]...... from 08:40 - 09:30)
(I have also attached my practice file as a TGA)

I downloaded an image of the internet to edit [URL]......
Because I want to edit the base and put clothes on it and such. I opened the image in gimp and added the lines for the clothes on multiple layers. I went in to color it and the color showed up grey, any color i used turned out to be grey. Then I looked up at where they put the name of the image and it says: (greyscale, 6 layers) I assume that why i cant color it. is their any way to change this so i can add and edit color?

The pictures came out fine. But then I upgraded to a (then) newer version of ACDSee, and the first time I opened the folder with these pictures in them, ACDSee turned them all magenta. ACDSee claims that this is impossible – but I assure you it happened...
Â
I’ve posted one of the pictures here, including a screen shot of the Info pallet while the cursor is over an area of the image. As you can see, there isn’t any info for the yellow or black channels.
Â
My question is – is there any hope for restoring the proper color to these images? I‘ve played around a bit with Curves, Hue & saturation, etc. - but getting natural color has eluded me. [URL]

Recently I noticed the histogram in PS4 displaying color channels instead of luminosity. And all three RGB colors seem to spike off the top of the window. Is there a way to only display the luminosity histogram curve? Also, how often would be considered normal to have to re-set preferences?

I was wondering if there was an easy way to view individual color channels (Red, Green, Blue) in the viewer, and if so what the shortcuts are. I know you can do this simply in flame but can't seem to find a way to do it in Smoke.

In illustrator, how do you change a photoshop spot color channel that has been imported into illustrator. Ever since Illustrator CS2 you could import a psd into Illustrator and you could ungroup the channels and change the colors. How do you do that in CS3-6? I have been trying to figure this out for years. My old computer with Illustrator 10 is about to die and so will my ability to do what I descried above.

I'm looking for help to assign spot color (some at 100%, others as tints) of a single PMS color into selected areas of grayscale images. I understand how to use the spot color channel but I don't know how to assign tints of my color. When I import the images into InDesign, the color swatches show various instances of my PMS color and when I get ready to package the InDesign file, it shows duplicates of the color. Don't I need all instances of the single PMS color to separate onto one plate, while the black (and its tints) separate to another? I want a two-color end result.

I am using Elements 6 for Mac with OS 10.6. My printer is a Canon MG8120, which uses several color cartridges (including a black and gray) and a pigment black cartridge.
Â
Today I tried to print a B&W line-art document, and it printed in a faint yellow. I tried another B&W doc, and the same thing happened. I exported the documents as both .pdf and .jpeg, and they printed in B&W using the Preview application.
Â
As it happens, all the color carts in my printer are either low or out of ink. Only the pgiment black is full (I put it in yesterday). So I wonder if my B&W docs have been printing from the color carts and not the pigment black cart. Is there any way to get PSE to use the pigment black cart?
