I'm trying to import some clips from Avid and the clips are playing back too fast.
In Avid, the clips originated as HDV 1440x1080i 59.94 fps. I transcoded them to DVCPro 1920x1080i 59.94fps. I exported the clips from Avid using "same as source."
In Smoke, I went through the library to select and import the clips. My Smoke Cfg settings are:
30i 1280x720@5994p, project settings 1280x720.
The clips playback as if they are running at 120% (best estimate).
in the Cfg template there are settings that are similar, such as 30i 1280x720@5994p and 1280x720@5994p. Is the "30i" for interlaced footage (ie HDV and uprezed SD)?
I tried using the frame rate tool and it does convert the frame rate to 25 fps but the length of the clip (in this case it should be :15) isn't changing. I'm not sure what the correct workflow would be in Smoke to do this conversion.
When I start a new project, it give me no frame rate option, beside what i see in the .cfg folder. How to i set a frame rate of 29 but with a custom resolution size ?
I am trying to convince Smoke to import audio @48kHz. I have a new project within Smoke reading the input sample rate from my AJA card at 48K. The file that I am importing is 48K and it plays at 48K from the Mac desktop. When I import the file into smoke it sample rate converts it to 44.1 KHz.: Option_click on the file in the Smoke desktop confirms this. All hardware input and output sample rates are set to 48K. Is there a setting that I am missing in Smoke?
The default sound for my Mac is set to the AJA card and no other audio software is running.
I have just tried plugging a Samsung SSD capable of 400+MB/s into a thunderbolt caddy. In action and on the desktop it behaves as normal. But in the player it plays at about 100fps. how to get it to play at speed.
The project config is HD 25 psf free. Smoke SAP2 SP2ssd_storageplaybackspeedissue.mov
I am editing in the timeline in Smoke 2013. I bring in a music track onto track 4. I bring in a interview clip on track 1. Only one or the other will playback and not together at the same time. I also notice on the audio tracks patch area a small square that when you place the cursor over and drag left or right I assume channels are being selected. What is this square box for and how do I get all my audio tracks to playback together?
I am using Panasonic P2 footage at 1920 x 1080. 29.97 NDF. I have brought them in through the media hub and created folders that correspond to each P2 card I stored on my Video Array. I am using a ProAvio Video Box with a RocketRAID 644 controller. What gives? Why am I not able to hear all the audio tracks during playback?
both playback and GUI use the GPU? I wonder if it would be possible to able to change GUI setup while playback. For example. I would like to play the sequence for my client (on the client monitor) while changeling the UI to the 1up view (alt-1) and zooming out the timeline. Basicly, i would like to maintain UI interactivity while Smoke continues to play. Currently this stops playback.
Another example would be; I would like to hit play as soon as the client asks but then still be able to resize my viewer or turn on the PPM meters without having to stop.
How can I change the playback and still player resolution for my timeline or for a clip?
I would like to be able to switch between full-resolution, 1/2, 1/4, 1/8, 1/16ths etc... (with one setting for playback and another, separate setting for still image/paused frames) e.g. via a right click on a clip/player.
PS Just like in Redcine-X or Adobe Premiere or AE...
When i scrub playback control in the cfx , it's slower compare to if i scrub the same thing (same viewport layout) inside the timing editor timeline. In timing editor the scrubbing response is a lot smoother even when we're looking at the same objects on the viewer. The playback control need to be fixed.
Every minute or so, I loose audio on playback (timeline or sources). The only thing that seems to fix the issue is cycling between AES BNC (or XLR) to Embedded and back, and the audio will playback fine again . . . for a few minutes, and then I need to recycle it again. I've restarted Smoke, restarted the computer, and down a full shut down and restarted . . . and the issue continues.
I've cut a 23.98 1080HD teaser via imported R3D source. Brought the source in at half res, so a little bigger than 1080HD however have been processing re-sizes in SoftFX.
The program plays perfectly fine in smoke, but I'm getting stuttering playback anytime I export a Quicktime. It's a constant, intermittent stutter every second or so.
In the desktop i can playback the thumbnail (space bar key), the problem is i will play the thumbnail under my current cursor position NOT the SELECTED thumbnail ? is there any preference i can set to switch this behavior?
Let say i'm hovering a thumbnail (clip) , i can play it by pressing space bar directly , but what if i want to scrub it first coz i don't want it to play from the beginning. While doing the scrubbing , my cursor will definitely then out of thumbnail. it might accidentally hovering (on top of) other clip/thumbnail. now pressing space bar will definitely play the wrong clip. so every time i scrub the clip, i got to reposition the cursor on top of the clip over and over again.
So i think it's more useful to change the behavior.
I have a clip that play perfectly fine in my timeline. When I export it, either as a Quicktime or image sequence, the playback stutters every few seconds; basically it double prints a frame every few seconds or something. It's extremely annoying and preventing me from a client delivery in the morning.
I create animated gifs frequently using the Frame Animation pallet. The default frame rate starts out as 10 seconds, so I always have to change it to 4 seconds. Is there anyway to reset the default frame rate that I start out with to 4 seconds, so that I don't have to change it every time?
Preferences did not yield any promising menus
I know the standard default reset with many Adobe products is to change it without a document open, but in PS CS5.5 if you do not have a document open the frame rate option is greyed out ______________ CS5.5 MacPro Tower Mac OS 10.8.2
I had to uninstall Smoke earlier to attempt to get the export function working. In doing so I had to run this line of code in the terminal: sudo rm -rf /usr/discreet/
When i reinstalled and eventually got it working again Smoke didn't see the project i had spent a day working on.
Is it possible Smoke deleted my project when i ran the line of code or uninstalled?
I just spent the last couple of hours programming 28 stills with edges in CFX. I phsically clicked on save project repeatedly in those hours, especially once I hit a MAJOR milestone. I added a shadow cast node in action and my system locked up. I was forced to force quit. When I reopened my project, I found that I lost a couple of hours worth of work. In the months going on year of using this editor, I find that smoke 2013 is very well intentioned, but seriously lacking in very basic functionality. Putting out a product that is touted as a powerful editor that doesn't have a audio cross-fade node (lost in EXT version), can't add a simple outline to a clip with a button click (the reason I spent hours adding a hard shadow and changing layer priority for each of the 28 clips and finally and MOST importantly, saving EACH AND EVERY TIME the editor clicks save to completion is simply doing a diservice to a quality product. when a person clicks file-save project, the project should save fully.
how can we create freeze frame like we do in FCP. i tried with Command U but that comes with audio and when i stretch on time line it gives handles. where in FCP when i create freeze frame it is like a still frame of JPG or any other file. when i stretch it just increase the duration of the still file.
Secondly if i did chroma key in FCP and i take the freeze frame of the clip, it creates the freeze with matte(alfa or transparent). how can we create that?
I have a very long sequence on CFX (3000 frames). Its a pain everytime a have to render in proxies (30 min). Is there a way to render in the timeline on proxies and from a certain frame? The default is a render starting at frame 1.

I use pr5. I got a clip (.mov with audio) and imported the clip and enable the cache source media so it will be transcoded into stone. Now after i edit the clip into the timeline , i want to reveal the master clip. so i select the clip and the audio as well (sync) and try to do match frame (F key). I got new clip reveal in my desktop but only the video, it got no audio. How to get the audio back from the original source ? why the match-frame is ignoring the audio ? so far i have to do silly steps by re edit the source clip back to the timeline to pair back with the audio. is this a bug ?
I've tried Match Source, Match Content and Match Frame and while they do different stuff, none of them are doing what I'm expecting.
To be clear, if I organize my clips into bins for an edit, I'm hoping to hit match on a cut sequence and the Smoke will take me to that clip in the media panel, and then I would be able to look through alternate takes of the same shot. It's more useful to me for finding similar sources than making a copy of the source which is already in the timeline.
I have Smoke (same version) running on two seperate Macs. Each Mac has an external thunderbolt drive for the media storage.
I worked on my project at home on Mac #1, and assumed I could bring in my external drive and use it with Mac #2.
When I try to add my drive from home to Mac #2, it creates ManagedFolder1. Which of course doesn't have my project in it- my project is on ManagedFolder0.
I suppose this may be caused by the fact I already have a ManagedFolder0 on a different external drive for this Mac, right? So I removed that drive, assuming I could then re-add the drive from home and allow access to the 2nd ManagedFolder0 with my project.
It just shows my old projects from the other drive still, but everything is broken inside of them. This makes sense as the drive is disconnected.
What's the easiest way to send a project to a collaborator outside my facility? Everything will remain in Smoke. All media files exist at both locations so we just need to be able to share the project files. Is an archive the best bet?
