AutoDesk Smoke :: Put Single Frame Clip Into Timeline

Dec 26, 2012

I have a single frame clip in my library, i want to put this clip into my timeline and i want it to be 10 seconds. I can just easily in/out in timeline and 'overwrite'. i don't like where i'm repeating a single frame and then still need to render it as 10 seconds clip.

This should be done like 'repeat' in the desktop tools. So in timeline when doing 'overwrite' , Smoke has to be smart to detect 1 frame edit so it just need to 'repeat' it not to 'timewarp' it.

And the another BAD thing , i can't have 'repeat' tool inside cfx . why ? so have to repeat the clip outside the cfx and go back into cfx.

AutoDesk Smoke :: Timeline Edit - Move Clip Straight Up Using Constraints

Dec 14, 2012

i have a clip in layer 1 and i want to move it to layer 2 , i don't want accidentally move in horizontal direction (change edit point), i want to move straight vertically. Using FCP hotkey, i can activate snap (shift key) to constraint it to a cut, but that only works if i got another clip, if there's no other clip , i can't do constraint since there's no reference. In FCP i can still doing it because it can use the current clip's previous position as reference edit. But in Smoke , i can't do that. I think there should be a feature added for this process. The workaround is : do not move the clip but using duplicate, then delete the original one... but seems too complex for that little tiny task.

AutoDesk Smoke :: Timeline Edit - Drag Copy Single Frame Is Broken

Dec 26, 2012

I'm using fcp hotkey , by default the 'drag copy (single frame)' is mapped to ' alt-c' . Normally this will work fine. But in some case where a cfx clip is selected or my time indicator is parked on top of a cfx clip in active timeline , then do 'alt-c' will give an error message "connectfx cannot be modified inside the containers. Proceed with edit ? "

So to solve this temporarily, i have to first deselect the cfx clip or move the current positioner on top of a non-cfx clip.

AutoDesk Smoke :: Clip Division On Sequence Timeline

Jul 7, 2012

I recently got a movie file from a client. This file is actually an edited video with straight cut edits. So I dragged this from the bin / media library onto the timeline and proceed to chop up the video according to where the cuts are using ctrl v, like how I usually do in premiere pro. I then selected one of the clips and added color correction to this clip. I found out that all the other clips were being color corrected as well.

I removed every thing and re-started from scratch using the source monitor to mark in and out for every cut. This time it worked properly with just the selected clip being color corrected. Is there any way I can do this like in premiere pro timeline with the razor blade but each clip becomes an individual one?

AutoDesk Smoke :: Match Source Clip From Timeline

Jun 11, 2013

When matching a source clip from the new sequence area it appears that you now have to have the widget on the clip you wish to match rather than just select the clip. Is this a change in the way 'match' works or is it a bug?

It was always nice to just tap the clip and press match rather than now having to scrub your widget to the right layer and clip before pressing match.

Photoshop :: Saving Frame By Frame In The Timeline

Jan 27, 2013

I am editing a short avi clip converted from a 1959 8mm film in the timeline.  The telecine conversion results in as sharp an image as I have manged to get using PPro 5.5 unsharp mask.  I tried mocha planar tracking to automatically remove a fixed spider web on the top edge of each frame in the clip.

Because the web is not distinct and the background does not progress at a steady fixed pace, the mocha procedure was not successful.  Previous feedback recommended methods to mask the edge.  Using various masking attempts to automate the procedure was also unsuccessful for the same reasons as mocha.

I have the time and decided to replace the spider web on each frame edge using photoshop tools e.g. clone stamp etc. - although other tools such as healing brush do not appear to work in the timeline as I expect.

My saves so far have resulted in a whole clip being saved with all following frames being modified similar to the first edited frame.  Perhaps I am not using the editing procedures in photoshop from the timeline correctly.

How do I save frame by frame in the timeline?

AutoDesk Smoke :: Auto Stretch A Clip On Insert Into The Timeline To The Selected Region?

Jun 13, 2012

This is based on prior work with Adobe Premiere and switching over to Smoke 2013...

since you were asking for feedback on the editor UI from Mac users...

a) is there a cut button that allows to cut a clip into two at the current marker positions? (e.g. to repeat certain elements)

b) is there an easy way to add extra frames at the beginning or the end of the clip by holding the first or last frame? (very important, but cannot find how to do this). Ideally this would just require dragging the beginning or end of the clip somehow...

c) There should be an easy option to add frames by extending the last or first frame in the case of transitions. Is there one? On Premiere, there's an option for this, makes it much faster to add transitions if there is limited movement in the source material

d) is there a way to auto stretch a clip on insert into the timeline to the selected region? time warp and frame-hold options (beginning, end, both)?

e) why is it not possible to drag clips back into the media hub on the left? (e.g. imported an AAF with a bunch of clips, now want to store some of the clips for later re-use in another timeline or part instead of having to keep it on the timeline)

f) the zooming into the timeline is cumbersome - is there a way to draw a rectangle to auto-zoom into that area? Premiere has a little scroller at the boom to select the zoom level. very useful.

g) for timeline zooming, could you support gestures on the MacBook touch pad? If you push two fingers apart, the timeline should horizontally zoom in. Two fingers together should allow to zoom out. This is actually not just for the timeline. We need this in all views in Connect FX, Action etc. Would make working so much quicker. And it's really standard Mac stuff. (Two fingers without pushing apart could enable panning? And/or space + mouse movement to pan?)

It used to be that whenever i would move the cursor in adobe premier with either the left or right arrows or by simply clicking and dragging it, it would play the audio from that frame. But it is not doing it anymore, I think i must have accidently hit a shortcut key or something to change it in settings i dont know. But it would be good if I could get the setting to change it back. I know for a fact that my laptops speakers do work, so its not that.

Feb 19, 2013

how can we create freeze frame like we do in FCP. i tried with Command U but that comes with audio and when i stretch on time line it gives handles. where in FCP when i create freeze frame it is like a still frame of JPG or any other file. when i stretch it just increase the duration of the still file.

Secondly if i did chroma key in FCP and i take the freeze frame of the clip, it creates the freeze with matte(alfa or transparent). how can we create that?

Now after i edit the clip into the timeline , i want to reveal the master clip. so i select the clip and the audio as well (sync) and try to do match frame (F key). I got new clip reveal in my desktop but only the video, it got no audio. How to get the audio back from the original source ? why the match-frame is ignoring the audio ? so far i have to do silly steps by re edit the source clip back to the timeline to pair back with the audio. is this a bug ?

AutoDesk Smoke :: Match Frame Function Like FCP And MC?

I've tried Match Source, Match Content and Match Frame and while they do different stuff, none of them are doing what I'm expecting.

To be clear, if I organize my clips into bins for an edit, I'm hoping to hit match on a cut sequence and the Smoke will take me to that clip in the media panel, and then I would be able to look through alternate takes of the same shot. It's more useful to me for finding similar sources than making a copy of the source which is already in the timeline.

AutoDesk Smoke :: Grab 1 Frame Inside CFX Schematic

Dec 20, 2012

In cfx, i have a source clip which i want to grab just 1 frame of it. So what is the best way to do it in term of efficiency ?

If i'm in timeline editing outside cfx then i can use alt-E and drag the clip to have a 1 frame copy. It's cool but how to do the same thing inside cfx ? i want to do it inside cfx schematic. Actually I can use a timewarp node or mux or maybe there's some other node that can do the same function. But is it gonna affect the speed of the whole tree ?

i'm comparing the two scenarios :
1. i did 1 frame grab in the editing then bring it into cfx
2. i bring the full source clip inside cfx and apply timewarp to get 1 frame to work with.

Is there gonna be different in speed ? if only single clip , i won't see any different. What i want to know : what is happening internally ? does the second scenario will eat up more processing ? If yes, then we need to feature to extract 1 frame inside cfx (just like in editing).

As an addition, in media bin, when i'm in editing module (outside cfx) , i can ctrl-E (cursor change to red icon) to grab 1 frame . But when i go to cfx then it won't work. ctrl-E in media bin won't do anything. It will be great to have that feature in cfx.
