AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Best Practice For Layer Naming And Object Layers
Oct 30, 2012 I've used E- for Existing and P- for Proposed for my layers and/or style names. For Object Layers, I've used OBJ- with modifiers and set the layers inside the styles to 0. This works ok, and Civil 3D objects obviously stand out and are easily isolated thru layiso and such, BUT having styles set to 0 presents a problem when dumbing down a drawing to send to another firm. The C3D Objects that are dumbed down are on layer 0 which isn't good.
We're generating a new template for 2013 and want to gear it towards the National Cad Standards on some level and do away with 0 as the style layer and actually have the style layers set to something other than 0.
My initial thoughts from a simplistic standpoint are:
V- for Survey and Existing features
C- for Proposed features
I understand there's many more designators. We mainly do Civil and Utility work.I know V is a designator for Survey but can it cover and should it cover existing features too that aren't surveyed, for example if we receive mapping from someone and want to reassign some layer names? Is C- strictly for Proposed/Design work?
I'm reviewing a template we're working with someone on and they assigned the layers inside an Existing Surface Style to C-Topo-Majr and C-Topo-Minr. They assigned the layers inside the Proposed Surface Style to C-Topo-Majr-N and C-Topo-Minr-N. The only difference is the N for New, between the style layers.
Shouldn't the Existing Surface Style layers start with V-?Just trying to get some feedback on a simplistic approach to Layer naming and keeping with the National Cad Standards on some level.
AutoCAD Inventor :: Best Practice Parameter Storage
Oct 9, 2013I am starting a VB.net project, and I want to get off on the right foot. The code I am working on first will need to examine an existing part's parameters and check that the correct ones exist, and if not, create them and give them an initial value. This is a fail-safe against somebody opening a global parameters part and deleting or renaming a parameter.
My question is: what is the best way to store this master list of parameters in the VB code? Would storing them as an Enumerator in their own Class be the best route? I am pretty new to VB, and I dont want to go way down the wrong road.
Just for clarification, the part that holds the parameters is derived into many other parts, and is linked to many assemblies to provide global parameters and sketch blocks throughout a group of models.

AutoCad :: Use Of Layer 0 In Blocks While Retaining Some Layer Management Abilities
Apr 24, 2012I'm aware of the intricacies of layer zero, and the general rule-of-thumb to draw content inside of blocks on 0 so that the block takes on the properties of the layer it is inserted onto, can be isolated, etc.
I generally follow this rule, and where required, I change the line color inside of the block when I want to maintain a certain lineweight. (lineweights based on my plot settings for colors). My dilema is that i've got an intricate block. I'd like to be able to manipulate this block in a way that you'd isolate layers and change their properties. Is there any way to isolate a portion of lines inside of a block while still maintaining them either on layer zero or another (magical) sort of "transparent" layer?
As an example, i'll use the classic "existing", "proposed" door block. i'll draw the door, swing, and jamb all on layer zero. I will set the the swing portion red and dashed so that both existing and proposed swings appear the same. the door itself will then take on the properties of my existing and proposed door layers, respectively. Now say i'd like to edit my block. I want to isolate the swing portion and color it by layer. (obviously the example is lacking here since it would be easiest to just click on the arc) Can i group items inside of a block, or better yet, can i create a second layer and somehow edit the layer's properties so it is "dynamic", "transparent", or "magical" like layer 0?

Mar 6, 2012My video is only for keepsakes of family and friends. I use VS X2 to create short movies. Once I create the movie I want to save it in a file of the highest quality given the camera it came out of. Would I get the best quality file by selecting Share-Create Video File- Same as First Video Clip? Once the movie is saved I wanted to delete the original video clips and the then useless .VSP file used to make the movie.
My thinking is that I do not want to keep all the video clips forever. Many of them are just no good. I use the best of what I shoot and put that into a movie. If I take this approach, will I be able to use movies saved as above to create a new production in the future? For example, create a compilation movie of my son in 2nd grade from the many shorter movies I took throughout the year. Would this compilation movie have the same quality as that created from the original video clips from the camera?
This is just a hobby for me and I don’t want to become buried under a mountain of video files that I will never use and eat up storage space on the PC.
AutoCad :: Blocks On Layer 0
Jul 1, 2013What is the general feeling about building blocks on layer 0 then using the layer controls to change the colors etc. after they are dropped into a particular layer?
In other words, I like to build a block labled "sample location" on layer 0 then depending on the layer it is placed in, it can be either red or blue (based on the test results).
I print out my drawings on letter sized paper in color.
Most of the time, my background image is a monochrome or greyscale tiff or a jpeg of a scanned in drawing.
Sometimes I will get a nice cad file to work with. with these drawings, I turn off all the extraneous layers that i don't need, and reset the layer colors to black and white. Often, though, the doors and windows are blocks on separate layers that I have to then modify to change the colors.
Premiere Pro :: Best Practice To Edit A Stereo Clip With Two Mono Voice Tracks
Sep 8, 2007My video material holds two voices that were recorded on CH1 and CH2 in mono, resulting in a stereo clip that has one voice on the left channel and one voice on the right channel. So far I always duplicated the audio clips and use fill right and fill left. I just found out about channel mappings in CS2 and CS3, but for my actual project it is too late since it is cut already. It is my first project I'm doing in CS2 and after it is finished I will install CS3. So my first question is: When I use the channel mapping command, how are the resulting mono channels handled in the master? Will each mono channel fill the right AND the left channel of the stereo master track?
With delight I found out that the channel mixer in CS2 allows to use fill right and fill left effects, so I don't have to drag the effects on each clip separatley.
My second question is regarding the mixing of the two voices. Since we couldn't afford to have a professional sound engenieer at the shoot the channel of the voice that was not talking wasn't turned down, so the second voice will be heard on the other channel when the two people stood close together. Is there a more efficient way to mix the two voices instead of using rubber bands to bring down one voice when it is not talking? It's a hell lot of work.

AutoCad :: Assigning Blocks To Different Layer
Jun 22, 2011How do I assign the blocks coming in from Architect's drawing (Partition Panels - about 50+ styles and each style is a different block) to a different layer along with those layer properties without having to explode & re-define?
I want to keep them as blocks but for uploading to a IWMS system which will only recognize certain layer names. They are changing over to the layer name I select, but their properties are not (example: color)

Jul 12, 2012working with blocks, I want to be able to simple turn on and off certain layers of the blocks appropriate for the work I am doing at the time. However, no matter how I construct my blocks, on what layer i made them or insert them, I can only get one layer to turn on and off freely. Is there something I am missing with blocks to get it to work more smoothly?
Example... a door block with swing and frames. When you want to hatch a floor pattern, you have to click inside and outside the swing arc to hatch, and even then... there should be a line across the frame to close the opening... I just want to turn off the door and swing line, keeping the door frame and threshold line to make hatching easier.
AutoCAD 2010 :: Blocks And Layer 0
Mar 1, 2013Many of the blocks my company uses were created with the linework within the block on Layer 0, and set to ByLayer.
When I insert it into a drawing, I put the block on a layer other than 0, and use that layer to control the color & linetype.
If I Xref a drawing, and want to turn off or freeze a layer I use the Freeze and Off buttons in the layers section of the ribbon (I'm working in 2012). This way, I don't have to figure out what layer an object is on to turn it off.
Here's the problem: When I try to freeze or turn off a layer by clicking on a block, it doesn't do anything to the layer that the block is on. It tries to effect layer 0. Even if I use the list command to find out what layer an object is on, it says it's on 0.
I found this article that seems to explain how to use layer 0 in blocks: [URL] ....
It seems my company is doing things exactly as that writer recommends. But it still seems incredibly faulty.
What is the best way to design and work with blocks? I always try to avoid using layer 0, but that would waste a lot of time trying to override the company standards.
AutoCAD Map 3D :: Theme A Layer With Dynamic Blocks?
Jul 27, 2011I'm working on a map which contains a large number of data points. One set of points represents a number of signalized intersections. Each point has object data associated with it, including information that I want to use to theme. In order to get the theme to work correctly, I have exported the points to SDF and then connected to that file using the FDO.
Once connected to the data, I created a theme that I am using to display the points. The points are set to display as blocks (all the same block) which only vary in fill color based on one item of the object data. So far, all of that works; all blocks display as desired and in the correct color.
The problem that I am having is in trying to make a dynamic label a part of the block. What I want is to display the contents of one field from the object data as text immediately below the block. To do that, I open the block in the block editor, then add an annotative text field (mapanntext command). I set the properties that I want with regard to text size, position, rotation, etc., and set the value to be the appropriate field from the object data table. However, when I try to display these blocks in the map, the text does not show up. I've checked the basic issues (text would be large enough to see, layer is set to visible, etc.), but I can't figure why everything else displays with no text.

Nov 29, 2012I have a dwg that is converted from vectorworks with 100+ blocks of different names. All line-weight and color is set to 0.00mm and white.
I want to be able to organize multiple Block into same layer so I can color them by layer and change visibility (hide/Lock) by layer. but when I select everything to organizes "by layer" only non-block line can be organized.
Is there a way I can change multiple block into same layer without exploding them?
I try:
1. select block and change layer in properties.
Failed.
2. "set to by layer"
Problem: layer of block is still not changed when open with reference edit.

May 10, 2013I have a drawing which has multiple blocks. When I explode one block there is an identical block underneath on layer 0.
Is there a way in AutoCAD 2012 to select all the blocks on layer 0 and delete them so that it would leave me with just the one set of blocks?

Mar 22, 2013I have a dynamic block symbol. It is a circle with two separate attribute elements at its side, with a line horizontally between them. No, this line is not a text underline; it is a separate line element that in one visibility state of the block must disappear.
My best results for blocks come when the element color of a block's geometry is set to "ByBlock" (attributes I leave as "ByLayer" color), and all of my elements, no matter what, I place on Layer 0. But in the case of this line, it always ends up matching the symbology of the block geometry. This I do not like.
When I insert a block, I use Attribute Editor to change the attributes' layer to the project's appropriate text layer. That way, in case I have to freeze a text layer, the attributes disappear also. What I want is for that line to be able to do the same.
Can an element's layer somehow be dynamically changed to automatically match the layer of another element, without having to Block Editor the block every time this is used from project to project?

AutoCad :: Pasting To Word - Quality Not Good / Distorted?
Jun 30, 2012I have tried copying/pasting into word from AutoCAD and the quality is not good, very distorted.
I have also tried WMFOUT and didn't like the quality either when pasting into Word.
My best option has been to plot and save as a .jpg, and the quality is great except the black lines turn grey and I really need it to be black. Is there a way to make it look black?

AutoCAD Dynamic Blocks :: Zoom All & Extents With Blocks Containing Fields On Layout Tabs
Aug 22, 2013We have a new title block which now contains various fields to automatically populate the drawing number, number of sheets, issue etc. The problem we have is when we go to zoom all or extents on a layout tab it moves the layout to the right each time. If we only have one layout or we use a plain title block i.e. with no fields, the zoom works fine (layout stays put in the center). This is also true if we directly insert a field onto the layout - again no problems.
The cause of the problem only happens when a block containing a field is inserted onto the paper space of a layout and,there are multiple layouts containing blocks with fields.
