AutoCad 2D :: Add A Specific Amount / Length To A Dimension By Using A Formula
Aug 4, 2009
Is there a way to add a specific amount/length to a dimension by using a formula? For example, say I wanted to measure a length of conduit between two fittings. The clear distance between the fittings is 48" and the conduit is recessed into the fittings by 3/4" on each side. If I dimension between the fittings, normally it would read 48", but I want it to read 49-1/2" so my shop people know what length to cut.

Is it possible to override a dimension with some sort of formula or function that relates to the length of the dimension?
A simple linear scaling might be possible by inventing a new unit with the appropriate conversion ratio, but that wouldn't work. What I need for the dimension to display a length 400 less than the actual length.

I am trying to create a iLogic Rule that will measure the Length, Width and Thickness of a part and ut it into the custom fields we have. I am having a hard time remembering how to get it to do it from the assembly level. I want to run this on the assembly and have it populate all the parts inside of it. The code below will do it for a part but what is it I add to get it to drill down into the assembly?
iProperties.Value("Custom", "THICKNESS")=Measure.ExtentsHeight
iProperties.Value("Custom", "WIDTH")=Measure.ExtentsWidth
iProperties.Value("Custom", "LENGTH")=Measure.ExtentsLength
Then I want to add this formula to the Stock Number iProperty = <Length> X <Width> I can get it to add the values but I can not get it to add the formula to the stock number.

During design development dimensions get modified a lot. E.g. shorten something by 25mm I just edit the feature dimension by tagging on "-25" in the edit dimension box. If lots of modifications are made the dimension gets messy since all the edits are saved (e.g. 150 mm - 25 mm +1 mm -5 mm). In sketch mode, I just retype the shown dimension, but for other features like offset work planes, extrusion depth, etc, the actual value isn't even shown anywhere. Is there any easy way to replace the formula with the current dimension value without having to measure the feature?
Basically, I like being able to use the dimension entry box as my calculator, but more often then not, don't want the calculation history saved.

I am drawing a diagram to describe a mathematical word problem. Since it is easier to visualize with a drawing, I want to draw it using the given dimensions. But angles used in the diagram are unknown and are not needed for the answer to be calculated, so the only way to draw this freehand is to guess at the angle resulting in the correct distances to be off.
Here is the word problem: There are two ladders, one 40 feet and the other 30 feet, each touching the base of one of two buildings and leaning against the other building. If the ladders cross 10 feet above the ground, how far apart are the buildings?
So for my drawing, being rather simple considering what AutoCAD can do, results in this:
Can AutoCAD calculate the angle needed to place a line of a given length between two parallel lines that are a distance apart less than the length of the line to place between them, having the endpoints of this line touching the parallel lines, fitting exactly?
For the word problem, the distance between the two parallel lines is what needs to be solved and the math is quite invloved, having to find the roots or solution of a quartic equation. (I have the solution figured out to be 26.03287754 feet)
What I am afraid of is that this would require to program an AutoLISP routine to create a new command that one can call from the command line. I see it using the the measure command with relative and absolute co-ordinates. This may be far from a "beginner" question. I can do this quite easily on a peice of paper: having two parallel lines drawn, take a ruler and placing the "0" mark on one line, then adjusting the angle until the desired length just reaches the opposite parallel line. I used to use this trick quite often when drafting with pencil and paper to divide a distance into a required number of even amounts, so this can't be that difficult to do with AutoCAD!

In Autocad 2006, is there a way to control the length of the dimension line when it extends outside of the dimension distance itself? In other words, when a dimension is small, and the arrowheads flip to the outside of the dimension parameter, the text and the extension line outside of the dimension seems to go to far outside of the dimension area..
Can I control how far outside of the dimension area that this line and text are placed? They seem to go to far out on my drawings. I prefer them to be closer to the actual dimension area instead of extending so far out.. Didn't know if there was a control for this and where to find it.

Is there a way to show the last number of the dimension length as 5 or 0?I want to show the unit in mm with precision (decimal places) equal zero such that the and to force the last number as 5 or zero
For example, I need to display the 7554 mm as 7555 and the 7558mm as 7560.

At center line I want to place a small perpendicular line in specific length and put their coordinate to excel sheet(export coordinates).
I have already two programs for this, one for placing objects on curve with specific length and 2nd for pick & export coordinates to excel or other type of file. but this is very lengthy process & need too big time. but I think it cab be done in a single command written in lisp.

Some times when I re open a drawing I have been working on, I start to dimension and I notice that the dimension extension lines stay the same length when I move the dimension in and out from the object being dimensioned.
Not sure why this happens, I do all my dimensions in model space, in fact I do just about everything in model and then just set it up in paper space to print.
I never change anything when I start a new drawing in my template, so not sure why it happens.

I'm trying to use the new arc length dimension feature in Inventor 2013 and I am having some trouble. After I apply a driven arc length dimension to a fully constrained sketch and then put user dimension in a user parameter I get an error when I rebuild the part. The error states the the dimension can not be solved.

I'm trying to delete, programatically, a specific dimensions on a specific sheet of my drawing based on a model parameter. I imagine it would be pretty straightforward to refer to generaldimensions.item(?).delete but how do I know what the index number of the dimension I want is? The only samples I can find either generacially access item(1) or use a for each loop to get all dimensions.

An image dimension to a specific size and extruded to a specific height with an empty cylinder through the middle for the wristband to pass through. All edges need to be rounded off somewhat so they are not sharp on the skin.
The face of the bead needs to be an exact cutout of an image that I have. I've used Photoshop to take the image and remove the background, so I have a .PNG with the background removed. I need to import this into AutoCAD and make this image into the face of the bead.

My goal is to be able to select a line and a dimension and then have the line's length appear as the text override for the dimension. I have the code to substitute the variable "dist" for the dimension text:
(setq dimselected (entsel "
Select Dimension:"))
(setq newlength dist)
(command "dimedit" "n" newlength dimselected "")
but am having problems extracting the line's length to the variable and setting setting it equal to the variable. To make things more interesting, the value needs to be in inches with fractional inches accurate to 1/16".

I've had a simple lisp I've been using for years that suddenly disappeared. It required that you identify a block name, tag name, and the value that you want the tag to be. All of this is performed via command line, so it is scriptable. Since I lost it, I've been experimenting with -attedit. This command comes frustratingly close to what I'm looking for, except it only appends an existing tag, or replaces a specific string within the tag; I can't get it to replace the entire tag, regardless of its value.
1> Any lisp routine that does what I describe?
or
2> How to make -attedit replace a tag value without regard to what the value currently is (like a * wildcard)?

1. I want to draw boxes of specific dimensions, i.e., 5"x7" within a canvass that is bigger (i.e., letterhead size) than that.
2. I also want to know what size a specific image is. I checked help (PS7) and it says if I press alt and right click on the image information (which I assume is the size dimensions shown on the status bar) it will give me the image size; but it only gives me the canvass size. Am I doing something wrong?
3. Not sure if this is the place to ask, but can anyone tell me where to go to learn how to create emoticons?

Is it possible to change the length of a line based on the length of an attribute?
I'd like to make the line a MINIMUM length of X" (I haven't decided how long yet--but know I'll need a minimum). But then after the user fills in the attribute, I'd like the length of the line to change to the length of the attribute plus a small amount (again, I haven't decided yet how much extra).

I was wondering if there is a way with DB's to have a line "follow" or "grow" with the content/value length of an attribute. Maybe some method of linking the attribute width to length of the line? Essentially, it would work just like turning on the underline setting when typing in mtext editor (or any program with an underline option for that matter), expect that the line could be placed anywhere, and would not have to reside directly below the text.
