AutoCAD Map 3D :: Measuring Areas In 2012?
Jul 15, 2011
I've tried to measure the area of a road layout (that includes curves) and it is giving me a completely unrealistic answer (310,000m2 instead of 41,000m2). If I de-curve the lines, the area is about right, but the lines MUST remain curved for me to get the most accurate measurment. why curves aren't being measured properly, and is there a setting I can use to make sure this doesn't happen again?

I’m trying to list the area of hatching in a few drawings. I’ve used this method in the past to figure this out. I’m using AutoCAD Map 3D 2012. I used Map 3D 2010 and could simply list the hatching and see the areas.

What is the difference between rooms and areas? Why create an area schedule off 'areas' as opposed to using 'room' areas? Can you create a schedule off room areas?

In the image below I have an aerial photo of an Island. I need to make it so as water areas are black and land areas are white (not greyscale) almost like a silhouette. My first plan was to draw round the island with a black paint brush and then use the "bucket fill" with a suitable threshold to fill all of the areas up to the black outline with black, however this doesn't work as the bucket fill either breaks through the black line or when I reduce the threshold, doesn't color the water areas solidly.

I use the "M" measure command a lot, Is there any other good ways to dimension in assembly? I often need to know the distance between the edge of a part and another based on a fixed view, which if the two edges are straight and on the same plane works ok but I need to measure the height of two parts which are on different planes or the distance between arcs and curves as these tend to always work from the centers?
I need a command that will basically fix the plane to the current view to get the required dimensions, is there anything available?

Is there a button anywhere to measure a distance for 3 or more points. Not using the dist, area or measure commands. Similar to dist but with extra points?

1) One circle is inside the other circle, need to measure distance from the outside edge of one circle to the to the outside edge of the larger circle?
2) One circle inside the other circle, need to measure from the center of the larger circle to the nearest outside edge of the smaller circle?

If you can imagine a cylinder sliding on curve joint. Let’s say the curve is in the XY plane. In the output grapher it is possible to display the force as the cylinder slides around the curve. However if I understand it correctly the magnitude of the force will be in the direction perpendicular to the point of contact between the cylinder and the curve? In which case is it possible to actually find out the individual X and Y components of the force? That is to say the magnitude of the force in the X or Y plane of the curve?

I have a plot plan, that is rotate about 31 degrees off true north. So when I draw inside the plan, I rotate the UCS to be able to follow a "plant" north.
> UCS > point 1 > point 2 (along x axis) > point 3 (along y axis)
> PLAN > enter > enter
Now, I'm trying to measure a distance between 2 points with my drawing rotated along a new UCS. However, it keeps giving me the measurements as if it were still in the WORLD UCS.....so my x and y values are weird numbers instead of the nicely rounded numbers to which I have offset from a certain point.
> DIST > point 1 > point 2
How do I get my distance to show me what the x and y distances are in the UCS that I have rotated to, instead of showing me the x and y distances based on the WORLD UCS?

I have to draw this:
[URL]......
But I can't understand how to draw the lines with that measure in fractions. I have my units set in "Architecture : Inches".
For example, in the right line that is: 9'-11 7/8''
What I do is, start the line command, click anywhere on the gril (because it doesn't say where start... so I guess you could click anywhere, although I am not sure about that either). And then I put, @9

I have two identically-drawn arcs, with their midpoints centered on the same x/y point. One of these arcs has been slightly rotated about that midpoint by some "R degrees".
how do I find out what this angle is? In other words, I want to find some angle "R" so that if I rotate one of the two arcs by it, they will both be perfectly in line.
Seems like there's a simple face palm solution here that I'm not seeing. Angular dimension to measure the angle obviously doesn't work since they are curves.

How come when you try and check a distance on an alignment, and say I try and click on one of the tick marks it will not snap to the intersection of the tick mark....it like jumps off like half a foot and will not give you an accurate measurement?

I am responsible for populating a database in which one of the fields is the area of individual rooms in a building. The instructions indicated that I was to use polylines to enclose each room / area and to find the area based on these values.
Earlier this year, another student was hired to confirm the measurements on building blueprints. This student took accurate measurements of each room, however instead of correcting the drawings, he simply added override text to the dimensions. Therefore the displayed dimensions are correct but my area values using polylines are inaccurate.
The project that I'm working on includes a number of drawings and close to 1000 rooms. I downloaded a function I found online that allows me to figure out which dimensions were overridden by boxing them in a different colour and I've found that it is a significant ammount.
Is there a way to use these overridden dimensions, without altering the physical nature of the drawing, to find the area of a room?Need to use polylines to calculate area of many rooms. Dimensions have been overridden and are inaccurate. Can i use the overridden dimensions without altering the physical drawing?

I have been provided an existing cad drawing as part of a project. I need to be able to measure the walls and interior of the drawing and I have the drawing set to mm. I would like to know what settings I need to change so that the measurements appear in mm as at the moment they arent. I have attached a picture to show the sort of measurements I am getting... is this something to do with scaling? The number on drawing is 15.700.

I am looking for a way to stream-line productivity of measuring points.
Currently working on monitoring surveys and have to show the movement of beams for the shoring walls.
The crew sets the benchmarks and every week goes back ties them in. I am currently measuring the horizontal, lateral, and vertical movement manually and then taking the numbers and typing them in excel.
is there a way to select the 2 points and it automatically insert the difference in a table?

I am trying to find a way to that I can very quickly measure the remaining square footage on a floor plan and/or equipment cabinet on a regular base. I have been working with AutoCAD for over 10 years so I am well aware of the typical command such as Distance, Measure & Area. I am wondering if with the latest AutoCAD 2013 there is a new command to do this faster.

So it isn't a major issue but I know how measure used to show a blue line when measuring between two faces or points that it measured (by default the closest distance) but ever since installing 2014 I no longer see those lines. Any setting somewhere or if that was just removed completely?

I need to assign the dimension in my screenshot to a parameter so I can use it to drive another assembly. However, I can't find any way to capture it in a usable manner.
In the screenshot I have an associative part inserted that contains only a sketch with the projected line and point that I wish to measure between, but the geometry in the sketch does not update when the model geometry changes. This seems to be normal behavior?

I'm having a real problem with a part I'm trying to develop:
I'm attempting to have a single timber part that has several draft face features within it, so I can control the bevelsa on the part with iLogic at a later date. The problem I'm having is that when the "running bevel" changes direction it throws out the bevels on the ends. (I've attached the file, it's very difficult to put into words.
But basically: When the running bevel is "forward" the end bevel measures 20degrees (as it should) When I flip the running bevel to "backwards" the same end bevel now measure 19.7degrees while the input parameter still says 20.

Two different problems (questions). These are IV2012 files but the problems are the same in 2013.
Open the two attached ipt's. Launch the Measure Distance tool and measure between the blue an red face on the DimTest. It should read 1 inch.
Change to DimTest Derive using the tabs on the status line. Measure still gives 1 in. Change precision to All Decimals. The mouse pointer changes to calipers and the distance now measure 1.004 (which is correct)
Switch back to DimTest again using the tabs.
Measure again and notice the mouse pointer still shows the calipers which imply that it is going to return all decimals but the dimension given is still just 1 inch. Either the mouse pointer should change back or all decimals should stick.
OpenDimTest.dwg. Manage> Modify> Replace Model Reference and pick DimTestDerive.
ALL dims disappear and the origin indicator goes sick.

I've done a lot of web design with photoshop. Often times it's best to make a large picture and then cut it up into smaller pieces to fit the spreadsheet layout of an html page, but I've always found it very time consuming. I basically have to make rectangle marquees until I get the correct dimensions, usually making a conservative estimate, then zooming in to slowly count the pixels needed. Is there a way to type in a pixel number to automatically select to that point?

I am trying to measure an area within a line , the blue line but could be any of the colours in the image below.
I have tried selecting the line with the magic wand but it seems to only select a small segment at a time.
- how to select the whole line , and not just measure the area of the relatively thick line.
- how to measure the area within the line
