AutoCAD Map 3D :: How To Get Shapefiles Imported
Mar 22, 2012
I'm working on a project to map or local cemetery, showing borders, sections, lots, & grave spaces. I'm running into a situation that I just can't seem to get a handle on.
I have a set of shape files from our local GIS dept of the area around our cemetery. When I examine them in QGIS, everything looks OK. Measuring the distance between two known points returns 204 feet.
Now, switching to AutoCAD Map 2012, I'm running into some issues. I've tried MAPCONNECT and MAPIMPORT with the same results.I create a new drawing, assign the projection (MI83-SIF) and then attach / import the shape files. Units for the drawing are standard decimal. Using the MEASUREGEOM, I measure between two points and get 204 (which is what I would expect in feet). When I change the units to Architectural, then MEASUREGEOM returns 17'. So, it appears that, while "204" in the shape file should be feet, AutoCAD Map is interpreting it as inches.
Any thoughts and how I can get the shape files imported so that I can create updates in Architectural or Engineering units?

I have tried to export shape files using the Map --> Tools --> Export function and I am setting up everything that I need to complete the import but I can't seem to get all the files I need. Our GIS expert says that he needs 7 files; the .shp .shx .cpg .dbf .idx .sbn and .sbx. The problem I have is that IM not getting the .sbn or the .sbx files when I go through the export process. Or even if those 2 files I'm not getting are necessary to be able to import the shape files into GIS.

I am currently working on a new project in Civil 3D 2014. I have been working with AutoCAD for years now, but I am new to C3D. I have imported a couple shapefiles into my drawing and I have also Queried the insert via "Locate On Map" so I don't have the entire parish data inserted. They are parcels and the other is a project location. What I am having trouble understanding is that I keep seeing Check in Features or Check Out Features. So I am not sure if I delete parcels or data within the features, is it completely gone? Or am I checking it out.
I also would like to know how to possibly change the features to edit in the familiar AutoCAD commands. Not sure how to change the styles for part or some of the features with possibly using them down the line.
I have attached a couple pics to this message so you can see the actual files I inserted and see a screenshot of my drawing/map and the Data Dialog box along with it.

I am not an ESRI user... strictly in the Map World, so I dont know..
Do ESRI shapefiles store layer color? If yes, can this be harnessed and remembered upon Map Import?
I have always just changed the ACAD layers upon import, but I have a client who is trying to import hundreds of layers and says that changing their colors would be incredibly time consuming, yet if he imports these files into ESRI, they remember what color their layer is supposed to be.

I have a dwg that someone imported and I cannot find where this object is. I have tried searching the database with DBLink, Ideate BIMLink and I have gone into every view to no avail. I also used the reviTTools add-in which says there are no drawings in the file. Am I dealing with a corrupted file? I am super OCD and this is in our Template which makes it an even bigger problem.

I create a graphic in Corel Draw X4 and export it as a .png file. It is a button with rounded corners. It will be going on a black background when put into an iphone app. So as to not have the little white corners show up from the rectangular export window, I made the button on top of a black rectangle, slightly larger than the button. I then selected the black to be transparant during the dialogs of exporting to png. When viewed in an image viewer the black is indeed transparent and does not show up. All looks fine.
To test what it will look like when put on top of a black background, I also make a black square and export it as a .png. I then open the black background in Corel Photopaint and then import the graphic into the background image. A siloutte of it shows up with the marque borders but the graphic itself (the colors and contents of the graphic don't). When combined with the black background it just disappears. Why doesn't it just lay on top of the other graphic?

if there is a log or register of files that have been imported into a drawing. I'm currently importing landxml files alot and sometimes would like to confirm which files were imported. I can start my own register but wondered if c3d is doing it already?

I have been given several drawings to perform FEA analysis. These files are solidworks files, but my school does not have the FEA package so I had to export the files to a .stp file to import it into Inventor.
On top of that, the SolidWorks file I need to analyze is an assembly, so I 'saved as' the assembly in Solidworks as a part to have one solid part.
The file seems to import fine at first, I can create sketches onto faces. But when I go to create an analysis, and try to set a fixed point or force load, I cannot select a face. I tried to "cheat" and add some material to the faces I wanted to use. When I run the analysis, it just doesn't recognize the initial material in the 'mesh'.
I CANNOT include full screenshots of the system, due to the nature of the project. I can show small clipped shots of the software status, but not the drawing itself. If seeing the "model" box on the left would work, I can supply that with the drawing names blacked out.

I am currently working on a model which was first created using inventor. Its is a drawing contaning tanks and pipeworks.I have looked into the drawing and have noticed that all the parts are 3d solids. The file size is over 100mb which makes the drawing impossible to work on.
Resolving the file size issue? Maybe converting all the solids to blocks?
I will be able to have access to the original inventor file and possibly try exporting smaller parts of the site and xref only the relevent parts of the site as required for each drawing if that makes sense.

I'm importing dxf files from the structural engineering program RAM Structural Systems where my buddy down the hall is modeling beams/columns/ etc in 3d. Importing is not a problem but I would like to know if there is someway to map the layers from his dxf to come in on my layers in cad instead of having to go through and select each object and place in on my desired layer. RAM does use layers for each member. For example :
when he models a beam in RAM its on an SBM layer. Is there a way I can make that SBM layer come in on my S-Beam layer that I have setup in cad?
In short I'm trying to find a way to not have to go through each dxf he emails me and place things on the layers I want them on in cad. I was curious if there was a way I could make cad recognize. SBM layer will be mapped to my layer S-Beam when imported.

Step that I created.
1. DL an igs files, then open it in Inventor 2012 Product Suite.
2. Save as .ipt,
3. Create a new .ipt and then DERIVED the save .ipt, change scale to 25.4
4. Save the part
5. Open .idw and place the part you just save.
Result: Notice that nothing is visible. WHY?

I've tried to import a dwg file that was created by someone else but I'm having a hard time editing it. I can scale it and move it and things like that, but if i wish to change the height. I tried scaling it, but it messes up the object. The object I am trying to shorten is a measuring rack on this site [URL].......
I can't change the objects height. Perhaps it's because it's a block reference or something. I've tried editing the block itself, but i have no luck in trying to edit the height. I cant splice it either.
I've attached the file im trying to change the height of.

A customer sent me a .step file. In order to produce the part that I need, I wanted to add some machining to his original part. Os I derived in his part and then added the features that I needed. Just a few tapped holes in one side.
Now, my customer made a few changes to his original part (added some detail) and he has sent me his new .stp file. I did not think it would be any problems if I just overwrote the original stp file with the new one. But, if I do that, when I open my part, Inventor complains that the updated part is part is not usable.
I tried saving the imported file as a .ipt and then bringing that into an assembly and doing the machining there. But, now when I replace the imported file with the updated version, my features fail.
Is there a workflow that will allow me to update the part that is derived into another part?
Using 2013,SP3-update3

I have recently ran in to an issue where the imported AutoCAD blocks disappear when I export to .dwf, this only appears to happen after I add the revision table. If I were to add the revision prior to importing the blocks all seems ok. I have tried removing the block and deleting the definitions from the Inventor.dwg then re-inserting once more and I still have the same issue. The only real working solution I've found so far is to start from new and reproduce the drawings.

I have to rebuild 3d geometry from existing *.pdf drawings. What would be the best way to proceed?
I thought an option would be to import the *.pdf in a kind of layer, rescale it and sketch on top of it.
However the pdf importation fails. How to import a *.pdf in sketch mode?

I have been given an incomplete plan view of a site with access roads and have been asked to extend the roads to meet up with a main road off site. Not having any survey points I figure the most accurate thing to do was to screenshot a Google map image, import it into my drawings and trace it. I'm struggling to scale the map image to my existing drawings.
The problem I'm having is when i click the image to scale, it obscures the view of the drawing, so I can't see anything to reference. Is there a way to make the image transparent? Or to have it permanently at the back.

I'm new to working with GIS data imported into Civil 3d as shape files. I'm working on setting up base drawings for a new project area and I have a lot of data displayed as polygons with attributes. This is nice but I would like to be able to copy these to polylines on layers that I can have a little more freedom to work with.
For example the polygon boundaries are not exactly the boundaries that I need to show and editing the borders would be nice. Is there a better alternative to tracing the polygon boundaries? I have noticed when I extract feature geometry for line strings I get a polyIine I can use but the polygons' extracted geometry is a Mpolygon with solid fill.

I was given a STEP file that was created in Solidwoks which when opened in Inventor 12' is a surface.
The surface can be successfully thickened after it is stitched, prior to stitching it fails due to it's complex obround, tapered, bell shape. However, because thicken only thickens perpendicular to the surface I end up with a lot of unusable ends with crazy angles and in many cases additional phantom surfaces which I cannot cut off or sketch on because they don’t really exist. Thickening has not been a serviceable option to this point.
All other techniques I try when making this model from scratch fail or do not match the original surface. Measuring the surface is difficult because the only measurements we get are the lengths of the loops, no radial measurements. Additionally, when I enter the solid I created from scratch into an assembly (whether it’s geometrically correct or not), I cannot constrain it, I can’t click on anything but the working planes – no surface, face or edge can be picked on the solid itself.
Making surfaces into workable solids? Is there anything I should do different? Is the sequence I am using incorrect? Correct order of operations they use to successfully create a solid from a surface?
