AutoCAD Map 3D :: Creating Contours From TXT File Data
Mar 3, 2013
I have been trying to create a contour map from survey data my group collected for a project but have not had much luck. I have all of the data in a text file (that is set up correctly) with the northings, eastings and elevations. I can get that to import the points and it is correct but I cannot get the contour lines to draw. I need the intervals to be .25ft with a major line every 4. there is about 1600 different data points.
Steps to create them from a text file? To get the points in the file i used "_MAPIMPORT"
also, the data is in an L shape so how to create a boundary condition to only contour that L shape and not try to connect points on opposite ends of the area?
trying to create contours from an exiting survey file. I am new to Civil 3d 2012. What I need to accomplish is create a 3d topo from the points with contours and then create a 3d model of the area.
I encountered a problem while creating contours from the points. what actually is the problem with the points or tell the steps once again that would be great. I'm attaching the points file.
This is the first time I have imported a .dgn file into Civil. The drawing contains contours lines with Z elevation data. When I create a surface using this geometry (polylines + some lines) the surface seems to be scaled in the Z axis by 12.
For example pline (from dgn) is at elevation 46' but the Civil3D surface is 552'
I assume this is a setting in the Surfaces dialog box, but I cannot find it.
Also the elevation field in Properties from the dgn contours is weird. For example, in one area the (pline) contours display -28', 26', -24', -22', -20', -18' in Properties but Civil3D interprets this as a downward slope - which is the actual field conditions. I don't understand the conversion going on here.
The geometry of the pline and contours generated from the surface seem to line up in a side or isometric view (see attachment).
I have a existing ground surface drefed into a model and am trying to get a user defined contour at a set elevation but nothing appears. I have userdefined layer on in the surface style and other ideas why it will not appear?
I am creating a surface from polylines and the surface is not being created per the what the polylines represent. These are simple 5:1, 3:1, and 3.5:1 slopes. The surface wants to create curves instead of straigtlines (see attached).
I have an existing surface and I need to creat a surface using contour lines of a at the high point on a spillway to the bottom of my pond to calculate volumes. How do I do this?

The engineers at my company digitize proposed contours in a drawing and then they want me to create a surface out of the contours....the contours usually are 2 foot contours with areas that the software tends to translate based on the contours that I selected to create the surface.....I then usually need to create a profile, which does not look accurate compared to the contours, such as low spots etc...............
My question is since the engineers at my work do not how to use the software, and I am not an engineer, making the profile look a certain way sometimes needs to be tweeked by me.... How to alter the proposed surface?I am pretty sure that feature lines cannot cross contours that I have selected to create the surface?
I have created 2 surfaces of a matierial that is buried, using drill hole data. I have a surface for the top, and then a surface for the bottom of this material. I then created a 3rd suface comparing these 2, creating an isopac contour showning the thickness of the material. My question is this:.....is there a way to make the zero (0) contour show up? I have a .5 contour interval, but 0 doesn't generate. Could i be missiing something in the settings?
The starting point: I have a JPG image of a battlefield wherein the height contours in feet are marked as faint lines (like a closed contour line for 390 feet, another for 420 feet, etc etc.)
The desired final product in Photoshop: A grayscale RAW document that shows the height variations in gray tones. Low lying troughs need to be darker and higher elevations need to be lighter. See picture below for example:
I am ignoring the roads and other features in the battlefield. All I am interested is the technique of converting the height contours into a smoothly varying grayscale image.
I am a complete Neanderthal when it comes to Photoshop. I do have a copy of Adobe Photoshop CS3 on my PC. I have been toying around with the package on and off. But nothing useful has come out yet.
Now to my specific questions
*How do I bring in the height contours into Photoshop? I have tried the magnetic lasso tool and able to trace a height contour with good fidelity. I am kind of stuck at this point. Do I save the selection to a new layer? Do I thus create one layer for each of the height contours? Say one layer for the all the 390 feet contours, another layer for the 420 feet contours, one more for the 360 feet contours etc etc?
*Assume that I have somehow brought in all the height contours successfully into a new Photoshop document. How do I create a gradient effect between the contours? The lowest height in the map is 300 feet and the highest areas are at 480 feet. Thus the area enclosed by the 300 feet contour lines needs to be darkest (pitch black) and the area enclosed by the 480 feet contour lines needs to be lightest (pure white). The areas in between need to go progressively from dark to light shade. How do I achieve this?
*Assume that I have created now a PSD document that has these smoothly varying grayscales. How do I convert this to a RAW image?
I've an old countour map (hard copy drawn ages ago) which now I want to digitize.
I've scanned this map (can be saved in JPEG, PDF etc format) however I don't know if there is an easy way to create contour lines from this JPEG image.
Some background: We have a composite surface of existing surveyed contours as a TIN pasted into existing aerial contours that we received from a client. We used polylines to generate our proposed contours, and then generated a proposed surface from that. We've made a blank surface, pasted in the existing surface, and are trying to paste in our proposed surface... only the existing contours outside of the proposed suface no longer line up correctly once we do.
We've tried applying the method laid out here: [URL] ........ (and the link referenced in the bottom) but are still having trouble getting the surface to work. We've tried offsetting as little as 0.25' and as much as 5' with the feature line draped over the existing surface, but it seemed that the greater the offset, the greater the discrepancy.
Just to make sure we even tried that correctly - should the breaklines that we add be standard or non-destructive? (I've tried it both ways with little success either way, so I don't know if it matters much in this instance, but perhaps for future reference it would work.)
I've attached a screen shot of our surfaces. The pink and green lines are the proposed contours, the white dashed are the existing. The outer red line is offset 0.25'. As I've mentioned, we've tried offsetting various amounts with decreasing success.
a civil engineer sent us a .dwg file for a site survey. However, the .dwg contours are just showing up as a series of overlapping rectangles. He attached two .txt files, one for elevation point locations, the other for tree locations. Both give coordinates... i.e. :452,2718.7202,2509.7896,569.4979,GL etc. I know that the .txt file is giving locations, but I do not know how to generate plines etc. from the given coordinates in the .txt file. I downloaded ascponit.lsp, but i'm not sure if this is meant for this...
I have a master shape file that contains parcel ID, owner, tax info., etc. I have another file ( access 2003 -open to better file format suggestions-) which contains parcel ID and a "yes" or " no" entry for whether or not the parcel needs a new water meter. All I want to do is add the water meter information into the other shape file. This would create one shape file with one table with all the information that I need.
Ultimately I will use the information to do a map query and find out spatially where i need new water meters.
Right now i have the master shape file connected though the “Connect to Data” feature. I also have the new data added to the drawing though the Data sources------>attach under the “Map Explorer” Task pane. I attached access file (ver. 2003 .mdb) which has two columns “Parcel ID” and “Meter”.
I right click on the shape file under the display manager and select”Create a Join;” however my water meter table is not listed as an option. Will this not work?
Plan B - I tried to Create and connect to the access file as an ODBC connection. Followed this guy’s directions to a T [URL]. But when i populate my table under the fdo connection the column headings exist ( “parcel ID” and “Meter”) but the actual data is missing. Am I missing something important?
Note: I am running c3d 2012 on a Win 7 64 Bit machine. I also removed office 32 bit apps and installed 64 bit apps to see if that would solve the problem. No go.
I'm trying to create a topographic map using 200+ (x,y,z) data points that I already loaded into an excel file, but I can't figure out how to apply them to my AutoCAD.
I've already looked around at a few lisp programs, and I've downloaded them, loaded them, but when I try to activate them in the command box I type them in and nothing happens.
I am a land surveyor using AutoCAD 2012. Just new to 2012 version, previously used 2005 version.
My question is:
Is it possible to (and how do I) create a 3D model of a ground surface from field survey data which has been collected. The data i have is currently in Leica GSI format, and has x, y and z coordinates. I can easily transfer this into a .csv file i necessary.
I am trying to create multiple block missing in our database, actually i have all the measurement of the fitting inside excel this is mostly elbow and T fitting.
I was thinking of a dynamic block with editable lenght (strech parameter with a mix of constraint). but before digging too deep in a wrong direction i want to ask community if something similar already exist?
Without using scripts, is there any way to have rectangles or textboxes act on values coming from a data file? For examplle if the value in a textbox was greater than 10 coming from a data record, could the textbox change color, or any other attribute to make it change from record to recortd as it is being viewed or printed?
Is it possible to create more than one data reference at a time?
I have approximately 30 alignments with over 100 profiles in my profile design drawing. The interface to create the data shortcuts allows me to do so by selecting multiple alignments and profiles. This works well and is efficient. To create the data references I have to create the reference for each alignment and profile one at time. I estimate this will take at least 30 minutes.
I am using Civil 3D 2012. Civil 3D 2012 SP3 | Win 7 64-bit SP1 Xeon E5-1620 @ 3.60GHz, 16GB Ram | NVidia Quadro 600
I have a Drawing "A" that is the source drawing containing the existing ground surface, topographic linework and features, and points in the Survey Database which are under the Survey tab.
I have a Drawing "B" that is the source drawing containing the Design alignment and profile with references to the data in Drawing "A" such as the surface.
If I create additional points for survey stakeout purposes within Drawing "B", will it automatically be included in the survey database in Drawing "A" along with all the other points or is there some procedure in order for me to continue adding additional points into the database from Drawing "B" or any other drawing that references Drawing "A"?
I am fairly new to the Civil side of AutoCAD, as I used to work primarily in Map. I am working on a street rehab project in which I need to take survey points showing existing elevations (centerline, flowline, and top of curb) and show existing profiles in a profile view. I have no problems setting up the profile view(s) or the centerline alignment, but I am having problems with creating the profiles themselves, and I have a two part question about them
Question 1: According to the user's guide, the correct way to set up an "existing" profile is by extracting it from a surface, but I don't have a surface to use. In reading through the various profile types, the best way to set up what I want seems to be by using the profile layout tools, but the help says that a profile layout is supposed to be for a final "proposed" profile, not the existing. Does this actually matter? Will I be breaking Civil functionality by creating an existing profile using the profile layout tools?
Question 2: In reading through the profile layout tools, everything seems to be centered around PVI's. Even using the "tangent tangent" method to add in points seems to only use the first and last point as controls, with everything in between treated as a PVI. If you look at the documentation here, points one and four are treated as actual elevations, while curvature occurs at points 2 and 3. In my case, since what I have is a series of actual points on a surface, each point should be an actual surface elevation with curvature occurring between points and not at them. What method should I be using to input the points in the profile?
As title says, I create a new Excel Data Link using "Data Link Manager" but it takes forever! If so, how can I get rid of waiting long time when creating/editing a Data Link?
I have received some sedimentary data of a seabed. I also have other geological layers the sit beneath (all in XYZ format). I have created point clouds using this data and would like to create a surface in order to use the elevational banding to represent thickness. Here lies the problem.
When creating a surface from the point cloud (whole extent), C3D seems to fill in gaps in the data. Is there a way that C3D can create a true representation without all the lines joining parts up? I know that I can edit the surface by deleting lines but this is very time consuming and I'm wondering if there is an easier way to do this. This problem isn't exclusive to point clouds either, as it does the same when adding points to a new surface.
I have attached a couple of screenshots. The first shows a Point Cloud with colours showing the desired effect. Unfortunately C3D doesn't allow me to print this. The second image shows how the surface looks when created.
I have upgraded to ACA 2013 and I have had nothing but problems and I want to know if I am alone on this. I have uploaded AEC Section Display and Tag Scale Hotfix, URL....
ACA2013 was released and I have had it on the desk for some time and finally I got the nerve to load the upgrade. This I did in accordance with the instructions. The upgrade went well.
Additional problems with my working files involved, the file will lose data while working in the file, the program will do strange things to the file like I would lose data while in layout tab within a viewport and the data would still be present in the model tab. I have lost printer setup files only to reopen the drawing and find these have returned.I have lost layout tabs completely. I would reload another menu and they would return. I was speaking to another person comparing Autocads and his had the layout tabs and mine did not.I have zoom scaling problems within the layout viewport. I use to be able to zoom, scale, 1/20xp for 1:20 scale and it would not recognise the command.I was informed via Autodesk to load the service pack Autocad_2013_sp1.14_64, this would not work then I was informed to load the service pack Autocad Architecture _2013_sp1_64 which it did successfully. Still had problems with ACA2013. have situations where the shell command will not work ie punch a hole within the object selected.I have changed from the working model tab to layout tab and back to model tab only to have the view change for no reason ie it will go into (+)(custom view)(wire frame) without selecting it.I have lost data, (part of the actual drawing) within my working drawing simply by using the boeleon subtract command.I have situation when you use the push pull command and nothing happens and then you reopen ACA afresh and try it again and this time it will work.I have email Autodesk in the US and it got alll TO HARD for them and they have abandoned me.
I have a complex data structure I want to be able to add to a Lightroom plugin. I know Lightroom uses a SQLite database. Can I add tables to that database from either inside a Lightroom plugin or externally? I see no documentation of any API capabilities granting direct queries of the SQLite database and as of now it's looking like the only technique I have at my disposal is to create my own homebrewed database system using the file system. I would like that not to be the case.
I've been using v3.6 with Win Vista for a long time and also use Geosetter to Geotag my RAW images with location data. Geosetter creates an XMP file which includes the location data. I then update the metadata of the image in LR. In the process LR has always created keywords using the location fields e.g Country, State/Province etc.
I've now moved over to Win 8.1 and re-installed LR 3.6 but still use the same catalog. Now when I go throught the same process as above the keywords are not created. Geosetter is the same version although the Exiftool version has been updated.
After I save a file for "Web & Devices," when I open it, it returns this message, "This file contains file info data which cannot be read and has been ignored." Will this cause any problem with the file once I place it in the website I'm building? I've never seen this message before on a photo I've edited. The changes I made involved color correction.
I am a new c sharp developer. I want to create a program in C sharp, which can communicate with autocad, when I do click in some area of the drawing, I can call to the c sharp program with the information of the object selected, for example I want to know the four utm coordinates of a rectangle, with those coordinates I want to search in a sql server database, which contains information of the object selected, for example if I select a rectangle, the database must contain the name of the owner, location and display to the user the information.
Otherwise, I want to open the program in c sharp, doing a searching via name of the owner and I want to open the dwg file that contains the utm coordinates of the name provided.
