AutoCAD Inventor :: Turn Certain Welds Off In Different IDW Views?
Sep 4, 2013
I have a weldment with about 200 welds in ti. In my industry being able to track and give each weld a specfic number and log it into the "books" is a big plus. I am starting to detail the assembly i have created and i am running into a problem. I know i can turn all the welds off in views in an IDW file. I can even make levels of deatil and surpress certain welds and such. This is extremely time consumming and not the easiest way of doing this. Is there another way of say turning off two out of five welds in a detail view? If not i think we will be looking for other software options. Considering our larger models will have 750-1500 welds this would be a nightmare.

Using Inventor Professional 2013
In the attached assembly, I would like to fill the four corners (see Figure 1) with weld to make one smooth bead around the perimeter of the end cap rather than using fillet weld to lay down four linear beads along the edges. I accomplished this with a groove weld (see Figure 2). However, problems occurred (pasted below) when I attempt to weld this piece to a surface.
Error message:
" Create Weld Feature: problems encountered while executing this command.
example.iam: Errors occurred during update
Fillet Weld 3: Could not build this Fillet Weld feature
The attempted operation had problems trimming and discarding faces. Try with different inputs."
When I had the four original fillet weld beads, I could fillet weld this part to a surface no problem (see Figure 3). When I switched it to a groove weld to get the desired corner appearance, I get errors. I tried to mess around with the tick boxes in the groove weld dialog box to try to fix the problem but nothing worked.
Ultimately, my problem can be solved if I could simply fill the corner gaps without using the groove weld command. This would eliminate the errors associated with fillet welding over groove welds.
Let me know if the attached files do not work. This is my first time uploading an assembly and its associated part files.
Figure 1: Corner with fillet welds (need to fill that gap)
Figure 2: Corner with groove weld (gap filled)
Figure 3: Fillet welded (concave) to plate. Still need those corners filled.

I have a part given to me from a customer that has ALL custom planes turned on. This file is large and has many assemblies, part, sub assy's.... too much to go thru one at a time. Can I turn all 'plane views' off at once? Why? Because I find it messy... no other reason.

I am preparing a weld map for our welding shop, and they would like me to balloon each joint and create a table with each joint's number, so that the welder/pressure tester can sign off. Is there a way to balloon joints and not parts, or make a custom ballooning scheme?

Not welds from a model, but if I go through 4 .idw sheets of details...and annotate all of my welds is there a way to assign numbers to them without manually entering them?
Our welds are track by number through QA, and depending on the amount of sheets and welds in a set of drawings for a given assembly, sometimes it's a real chore when you realize you forgot to add a weld to something on page 2 when you've already edited weld tails through page 5.

I'd like to make a rectangluar pattern of a part that is groove welded into a plate. Inside the pattern command I can select the part but not the weld. How to avoid having to do each weld individually?

Is it possible to export a weldment and include the weld volumes? I'm attempting to export to an .stl file and the welds are missing in the resultant file. (Or am I doing something wrong?) The weldment was converted from a standard assembly file, but the BoM structure was set to Normal, not Inseparable.

I need to show fillet welds between the bar and the curved surface. There is a small gap there (3/8" bar against 2 3/4" O.D. tube) and IV and neither groove or fillet weld works. How to show the weld?
I am using IV2009.

If certain modelling / sketch features should be avoided under the machining feature group.
I have an assembly file containing three part files, plus a weldment feature and machining features. In the real world this sub-assembly represents two metal components welded together, of which the third (plastic) component is then inserted, and this is followed by the final machining process - adding the staggered slot (see jpeg 1).
My problem is I get an error message as soon as I try to activate editing the weldment feature group (see jpeg 2). Clicking ‘Accept’ I can then edit the current weld, but I can not add any new welds. Inventor will let me choose to place a new fillet or groove weld, and even show a preview (see jpeg 3). But on clicking ‘Ok’ or ‘Apply’ I get another error message from which it won’t let me proceed (see jpeg 4 (in my second post)).
The error messages relate to the constraints placed on the work planes used to achieve the model features (extrusions, revolutions, chamfers, etc) under the machining features group.
A couple of points; the weld(s) have to proceed the machining features so each manufacturing stage can be clearly illustrated on the drawing of the sub-assembly. And yes in this case I could remodel the assembly, but it is time consuming and regularly our customers will want the design tweaked, so having to remodel every time would be unacceptable. Thirdly, I believe the work planes are needed to constrain the sketches (see jpeg 5 (in my second post) - the work plane is constrained to the ‘red highlighted dot’ and tangent to the cylindrical face).

My alignments have been created not under Sites and I am copying them to different Sites as needed. I am copying appropriate profiles along with them - an existing from surface and 1 proposed.
1. Should I copy the Profile Views? - will this create a copy of the profile view directly over the original profile view?
What are the benefits / disadvantages of copying / not copying the profile view along with the profile?
More importantly,
2. How do I turn OFF-ON copies of the alignments and annotation in my Plan View?
If I right-click alignment properties in a Site and set the Object Style to NO DISPLAY - this turns off the alignment, but not the annotation.
If I right-click on the alignment labels, Edit Alignment Labels - I am looking at a complex dialog box with lots of drop downs - a bit lost in here. What about a 1-click setting to NO DISPLAY the layers like I can find for the alignment itself?
Do I need to create/copy a bunch of new Styles? Not sure exactly where to go or start.

I am trying to create a second base view (using Layout/Create View/Base from model space). The problem is, I need it to be rotated from the original base view. However, when I rotate the part in model space, ALL of my views change.
So I guess my question is, how do I create multiple views of the same part that are seperate from the other base views?

How do I model (or calculate) the fewest welds/fittings required to change angle and elevation in a pipe run, as shown in Option1 below.
For this example the constants are: 8" standard steel pipe, one of the fittings is a standard butt weld 45 (12" radius), bend angle is 70 degrees, and the elevation change is 9". The custom fitting is cut from a standard 8" long radius 90.
Note: Option2 is just shown for reference, I'm only interested in solving Option1

How could I get the idw views to name themselves? Instead of ” view 1”, “view2” why not have it name itself the file name, the same goes for a parts-list added to idw sheets? When slow clicking them to rename they already have the file name referencing the view or parts list. I have multiple views and multiple parts list on many sheets. Re-naming them is starting to get old!
I took a quick look at “ILOGIC” because that’s my “ILOGIC” speed and nothing jumped out at me.

So I am trying to create section views that detail the correct assembly of two parts.
These parts are welded on top of each other so its important to have clear understanding of how they fit together.
So imagine a pipe bent in the shape of a circle, in the horizontal plane, then holes drilled into the top (vertically) and then another pipe fitting in the holes and being welded together. This is what is happening.
So I am trying to create a section view of one of the holes with the welding information.
When I go to create the section view, I draw a line that would pass through the center of the large horizontal circle (but doesnt) and the center of the hole I am trying to detail and through to the outside of the horizontal pipe.
Now with this line I should get a view of the assembly exactly perpendicular to the line from that point. This is what is called "Aligned" in Inventor and what I was taught as a "Section View". However, this is not the case at all. I get what is called a projected section view.
find a way to get an "Aligned" view of this without sectioning the entire assembly. I just want the small bit necessary to show the relevant information.

Let's say I have a flat pattern view of my part and the bended top view of the same part on the same drawing and I want both of the left side of each to be in line. (The right side shortends after the bends occur but the left side is not changed at all)
Work around:
1. Export to autocad and line them up with the osnaps, etc
I know how to sketch per view and project geometry but thats still on each view and when I try to line them up I am using my eye. Is there a better way to line both up even though their on different views?

oBaseView = osheet.DrawingViews.AddBaseView(otargetDoc, oPoint1, DrawingViewScale, kFrontViewOrientation, kHiddenLineDrawingViewStyle, "Default")oDraftView = osheet.DrawingViews.AddAssociativeDraftView(otargetDoc, oPoint1, DrawingViewScale)
I have one base view and one draft view created all at point1 with the same scale. It seems to me the base view's center is at point1. But not that of the draft view.
Just wondering how to overlay them to looks like one view with the same origin point. Or what coordinate I adjust, so I can draw on draft view, but looks like I was drawing on the base view?
Some additional lines are needed in drawing but can't get from projection of a model.

We recently started using Inventor DWG files (shifting away from IDW).
Part of the process for one of our programmers is to open a DWG file using AutoCAD Mechanical 2012, delete all unused dimensions and views, and use the remaining view to program his CNC machine. We are finding that this is not possible to do with the new format Inventor DWG files, as the views are not able to be selected.
What is the AutoCAD 2012 procedure for deleting views created with Inventor DWG?

I have an IDW file that has a corresponding .IPT Everytime you import a .ipt onto a sheet, a text accompanies it. I want to write a macros to edit this text.
As an usual practise it gives "VIEW, DESCRIPTION and SCALE" .
Instead of VIEW , I want the code to pick something from the i-properties.
Eg. Instead of VIEW, it shopuld write the STOCK NUMBER from the iproperties of the part.
Is this possible ?

I am using Inventor 2013. For some reason I cannot dimension some of the model entities in the drawing views in an idw file. I can retrieve the model dimensions but it is usually easier to create the dimensions I need in each view. I can select the line, curve, etc. when dimensioning but nothing happens.
After I think about it. What I cannot dimension are lofts that I created with rails. These rails were made up of lines and curves, not polylines. How do I get the sketches for the rails I used for lofting to display in the drawing views so I can dimension those sketches.

How to edit the explode steps in an explode file? I have created an exploded view of an assembly, only I have edited the assembly by adding a whole bunch of fasteners etc. Now I want to go into the explode file and add the extra components to the related exploded steps - only there is no steps to add the new components too, each component is on its own. The functionality I am talking about is a sw thing and there is probably another process to do this, or a work around.
