AutoCAD Inventor :: Sketch Snap To Datums
Dec 20, 2011
I have a particularly bad habiit of wanting to dimension my parts off the datum planes. I even like to center most of my parts off the datums for placing them in assemblies. However to do this every time I start a sketch I have to show the datums and them Project Geometry after selecting the datums in the sketch. Is there a selection in the options to make the datums ALWAYS projected? Having to set them for EVERY sketch has become tedious. I have the settings set as follows. I am using 2012.
Inventor Premium 2013 SP1.1
Vault 2013- plain vanilla version
HP G71 notebook
celeron cpu w 4gb RAM and 64 bit system

The company I'm working for is moving toward standardising all plant designs. iLogic appears to be the best way for rapidly producing assemblies that keep to a standard.
My new task is to automate the adding of walkways (including hand rails) to large plants. My idea is that walkways would be added to the plant similar to how frame generator works. The draftsman would draw a sketch on a plane around the structure. He would then run a form (That looks like the frame generator form). He would select the lines, a rule would capture the length of that line, pattern the standard walkway along the line until the line intersection, add a corner walkway, and then pattern the straight walkways again.
1) I do not know the ilogic code in order to 'get' a length from the lines that the user selects.
2) how does one constrain the center line of a part to a sketch line.
The second idea I had to create the walkway is (without a sketch), was to have a form that has a dropdown list of all the standard walkway pieces. The form would work almost like adding a bolted connection to an assembly (e.g. bolt, washer, nut, washer, nut). The draftsman would for instance, choose an straight 800mm part, a 1200mm part, a corner(left), a 1200mm part. Each walkway assembly piece, would then be added to the main assembly in the correct order and constrained. BTW, is there any book with all the inventor iLogic code, function and uses? I have found myself pouring though so many forums and picking up bits and pieces, but no actual instruction.

When I use a tool such as 'move'/'select base point' in the sketch environment, I used to be able to select line midpoints.
Is this no longer possible? My constraint options seem to be fine.

I have a user and when he's in sketch mode he trys to draw a line but it keeps on snapping to a grid. Both snap and grid setting are switched off. I can't find any settings he has different from my own set-up so I'm finding it hard to fox this problem. FYI, this user is a bit of a problem and tends to change settings without even realising he's doing it.
He's using Inventor 2012.

I've created a shared sketch and have used it with various features. Sometime those features are suppressed. The model works fine but the shared sketch generates a sketch doctor error because the feature that created it has been suppressed. Is there anyway to make the sketch suppressed so it doesn't trigger a sketch doctor error? Inventor 2013

How do I duplicate the 2D line work from a part level sketch into a drawing level (overlay) sketch?
I started a simple 2D piping system diagram sketch by opening a new part file and using a sketch to stick draw the system schematic including some annotations. Then I opened a new drawing file and made a base view of the part file to bring a view of the original sketch into the drawing.
I realize now that it would have been much easier to have created the schematic directly in a 2D sketch at the drawing level, which would have made editing the annotations much easier at the drawing level, and there is really no need for the part file to exist. I have no intention of creating a 3D model or "real" part in the .ipt file, was just using it as a jumping off point to sketch.
I was thinking that I could correct my error in judgment by just copying the sketch and pasting it into a new sketch on the drawing, but it doesn't want to work that way. I have tried copying both the whole sketch at the browser level, and the entire sketch contents (all of the lines and annotations) from the opened part sketch, but when I attempt to paste either of those into the drawing, paste does not seem to be an option. I'd rather not have to draw the whole thing again, as in typical fashion, my once simple sketch has grown in proportion and complexity from its simple beginning.

I was trying to query some sketch points data from a profile Path using code as below. However the program stopped without telling the reason.
Code below:
i = 0;
foreach (ProfileEntity oSourceProfileEntity in oProfilePath) { switch (oProfilePath[i].SketchEntity.Type) { case ObjectTypeEnum.kSketchArcObject: { SketchArc srcSkArc = default(SketchArc); srcSkArc = (SketchArc) oSourceProfileEntity.SketchEntity; // error points[i] = srcSkArc.StartSketchPoint.Geometry; break; } default: { SketchLine srcSkLine = default(SketchLine); srcSkLine =(SketchLine) oProfilePath[i].SketchEntity; // error points[i] = srcSkLine.StartSketchPoint.Geometry; break; } } i++; }

First we imported an ".igs" file to inventor, which produced "wires". Then by promoting the wires it produced a 3-d sketch.
The model is in one plane and 2-D, and we are trying to use Ansys 2-D analysis, but in-order to do so it needs to be in a 2-D sketch.
The model is too large to be redrawn on a 2-D plane, how to convert it to a 2-D sketch

I'm having trouble with constaints, I'd like to constrain my sketch to a point in another sketch on a different plane. Is this posible in Inventor? If so how? If Inventor works differently how would you get a points in one sketch to be linked to points another?

We recently had a draftsman that drew with snap on (he no longer works here), and now all the drawings he worked on have this setting turned on. I thought it would be as simple as opening up the drawings and either hitting F9 or clicking on the toggle to turn off snap. That doesn't seem to be the case. Snap mode seems to be tied to individual sheets, and every viewport. I have multiple sheets in a drawing and each sheet has multiple viewports. The last thing I want to do is open every drawing, click in every viewport on every sheet to turn off snap.
I have snapmode set to 0, but it will only turn it of in whatever sheet or viewport is active. I have to write a lisp routine that will go through every viewport on every sheet to set snapmode to 0?

Since switching over to Inventor 2012 I have been having trouble snapping to tangent points on a curve or circle to pull dimensions. I would do it manually but if the dimension is not referencing a specific point in the model it turns pink to identify an error.
Is there a setting that may be not allowing me to snap to tangent points?

IV11, IDW.Is there a way to Disable Midpoint snapping while Dimensioning? It seems to get in the way a lot.A lot of the Lines i have to dimension are small and it's Always trying to dimension to the Midpoints of them rather than end points. Not a bad concept.. just in my case it really gets in the way..So just wondering if there is a setting somewhere to turn it off?

I'm working on a project in wikiHelp under Inventor tutorials, Content Center, Create iMates. When I pull the object up in an assembly I can create an iMate and it will show that I made one. But when i go to the next page (Place Content Manually Using iMates), I can't get the bolt to snap to the iMate inside the object, the bolt just stays in one position the whole time.

When working in the drawing environment it is easy to accidantially snap the dimension to a thread symbol (the arc around the hole), instead of the actual hole.
I don't think need dimensions to snap to these symbols.

I must not be the only one required to produce 2d dwg's for work.
I'm using INV 2009 and our vendor swears up and down in 2012 every thing is fixed, which somehow I doubt since they failed to fix the conversion from idw to dwg in the previous 12-13 releases.
Anyways, my problem today is that the dimiension lines I spent so much time making them meet our industry and company standards in my idw are all wrong in the dwg's I saved.
(please see attached).

I have problem with placing origin of ordinate dimensions on point where two centerlines are intersecting.
In my particular case I have rectangle and centerlines are in the middle of pararel edges. So they are crossing eatch other in the center of rectangle.
I need to place origin for ordinate dimensions in this point. But till now I had not find any way to do that except make a skkech and draw a line that's one end is exactly in the point I want. But it seems to me like rather ridicules aolution.

We use ordinate dimensions for all holes in parts. Unfortunately there seems to be features frequently left out of ordinate dimension mode. For instance, by default Inventor uses center and quadrant object snaps. Unlike in normal dimension mode, there is no right click option for disabling quadrant snaps. This is a constant annoyance, especially when dimensioning a print with a lot of holes. Is there any other way or hidden setting to disable the quadrant snap? In addition, add member is missing from the new "marking menu" completely so we have to enable the old right click menu to get it back. Are we the only ones using ordinate dimensions?

I'm trying to rotate a piece in an assembly by a selected axis to a precise angle, but the program just won't let me. I get to rotate it around with my mouse, but it only lets me change the angles at 5 degrees minimum. I try to type in a precise angle into the box, but it only lets me type in 1 character. Below is a screenshot of what I mean (I'm using Inventor 2011).
[URL]....
It either only lets me put in the first digit or won't let me manually change the value at all. What is up with this? The tutorials clearly says I can put in a arbitrary value.

I recently started working with Inventor (Solidworks user for 15 years). When designing new parts in an assembly in Solidworks, there was always an auto snap feature to align parts (centerline, midpoint, etc). I cant seem to find this option in Inventor 2013. Im trying to design new parts in an assembly but cant seem to snap to any other existing parts features or centerlines. Is there a quick way to activate this option? Is it even available in Inventor?

Snap commands in X6? I can not get the snap to grid to turn off. The button is off and the setting is set to off in options. Objects seem to snap all over not just to the grid. And the grid snap seems to be out of alignment-I cant seem to get objects to snap exactly to the grid.
The same files reopened in X5 are fine. This started with yesterdays install of 6.2. leaving X2 completely unusable.
