AutoCAD Inventor :: Shaft Generator Can't Create Parts Anymore

Nov 21, 2013

I'm using Inventor Professional 2014

I created several Parts with the Shaft Generator, and from one moment to another it always says that it can't update the part file with the new shaft when I press Ok.

Here is the original error, I'm german, so of cause its in german, but i discribed above what it says:

AutoCAD Inventor :: How To Create A Standard Locknut Thread With Shaft Generator

Mar 13, 2012

How I could go about creating a standard locknut thread, with the shaft generator (easy so far) BUT create a proper single rounded end key way? It does the end of the locknut groove with the rad that exits the shaft, but in complete truth (and 15+ years of experience.) I have never seen this done in the real world.

AutoCAD Inventor :: Shaft Generator Auto Update?

Mar 28, 2012

I have written some VB code which updates parameters in a model. I would like the code to update the shaft parameters. The shaft is created using the shaft generator. I can use a parameters to set the lengths, diameters and fillets. But when the parameter updates the length stays the same. If I open the shaft assembly, click 'edit using design accelerator' and then click 'ok' in the window the shaft updates. Is there anyway to do this automatically?, maybe through iLogic or API?

What factor of safety value the Shaft Generator program uses when you run the calculations?

Does the factor of safety value change when you are not using the inventor user material option?

Lastly, when exactly do you know when to use the density option in the calculation properties or not?

AutoCAD Inventor :: Cannot Edit Parts In Assembly Anymore

May 28, 2013

So I have been working on this assembly for quite a while and now Inventor 2013 doesn't let me edit my component on the fly from the assembly space like before. (the Edit button appears dim as shown below)

I am (unfortunately) running the soft on XP and it's running out of memory quite often. I was wondering if it was possible that Inventor blocks the user from using functions that could lead to a potential crash.

AutoCAD Inventor :: Frame Generator Twisted Parts

Jan 25, 2012

I am on inventor 2010. never really used the frame generator much before. so I may be doing soemthing wrong.

But I just make #d sketches, and add members as i need them.

But I have this assembly, made of I-beams and HSS. I noticed eventually some parts will get twisted.

(Not really sure when and why it happens. I Usually notice just by chance.)

The only way I found to correct the problem is to delete the member and re-add it.

AutoCAD Inventor :: Frame Generator Parts Keep Rotating After Rebuild

Aug 5, 2011

I have resorted to partially recreating frames.

I am working on one frame where I have rebuilt two parts multiple times and they still revert to being rotated slightly after performing a rebuild.  I can continually hit the rebuild button and watch them rotate back and forth.  Is there a known fix for some of these oddities with FG?

Notice the two tubes in the attached pic.  I do not understand why they continue to rotate out of alignment after they are placed correctly.  (They even look fine when placed.)

AutoCAD Inventor :: Bolted Connection Generator Through Multiple Parts

Jan 7, 2013

I'm trying out Inventor 2013 and I have modelled 2 parts. 1 hollow cone with a collar on each end and a disk to fit between 2 instances of that cone positioned in opposite directions in my assembly.

I am having difficulty making a bolted connection between the 3 parts through any of the holes. It only seems to go through one of the collars and the central disk but I can't get the generator to select the correct termination surface on the collar of the second cone. Is this not possible?

AutoCAD Inventor :: Linking Frame Generator Parts To Sketches

Mar 2, 2012

I dont know if this is possible or not. What it is, is that we use skeletal modelling, so we use intelligent "master sketches". Now we are just starting to use frame generator also and we want to combine the 2 methods.

An example of how we work is this.......

Lets say, we are designing the base of a basic frame. Now, we sketch in the profile of the RHS that will run along the front of the base and we also sketch in the elevation view of this RHS (see snip 1). This gives us 2 sketches to derive in to create a new part of RHS.

If I change the size of the profile of the RHS within the "master sketch" the newly created RHS part will update to suit. This also applies if I change the length of the RHS within the elevation view within the "master sketch".

So, now we want to add in a 5mm thick plate that sits flush with the top of the RHS, we sketch in a 3mm thick rectangle and make the top line colinear with the top line of the RHS profile sketch (see snip 2). We would then derive through these sketches and use them to create this plate as an ipt.

So now we have 2 parts, 1 length of RHS and 1 piece of plate. If we place these to parts into an assembly and ground them to their "root" then the plate will be sitting flush with the top of the RHS.

If I change the profile of the RHS to 50mm taller in the sketch, then the plate will move up to suit and stay flush with the RHS in the assembly.

NOW, what we want is to use frame generaotor along side this method. Instead of deriving through the first 2 sketches to create the the RHS, we want to create the RHS using frame generator and the elevation sketch BUT what we also want is when we change the profile sketch of the RHS, the Frame generator generated part updates to suit the altered sketch. The reason we want this is because we control all our full assemblies using sketches.

Lets take the same bunch of aforementioned sketches and create the parts using FG.

So I have the RHS profile sketched out at 100x50 and the plate sketch sits colinear with the top of this.

I then go through the motions to create the RHS within FG.

I choose RHS from the drop down menu, then choose 100x50 from the "size" drop down menu. I then use the elevation sketch to specify the length.

Now if I increase the size of the RHS (to 150x50) within the sketch, the plate will move up to suit BUT the actual part of the RHS which was created using FG will still stay the same size (100x50), and the plate will be shown as floating within the assembly!!!

If I do it the other way, i.e. change the size fo the RHS within FG, then the sketch will still show the original size and the plate will still sit flush with this original size. This will show the plate as sitting too low in the assembly!!!

Is there anyway at all, that we can link the profile sketch dimensions to the FG generated parts, so that if we edit the profile size of the RHS to a larger or smaller size then FG will automatically alter the generated part to suit the profile sketch???

Is this at all possible???? Or will we just have to alter both the sketch AND the FG part? We really don't want to use adaptive parts within our assembly, we always just control our assemblies with our "master sketches".

AutoCAD Inventor :: Can Frame Generator Skeleton Be Sheet Metal Parts

Feb 22, 2013

Up until now, for FG I've always created a part with just a sketch in it. I insert that in an assembly and use it as my frame generator driving part. Now, I've started creating a solid instead of just a sketch in the part and using its edges to attach frame members. Picture a cube. I really need to put sheet metal on the cube and have my frame on the outside of the sheet metal. I was setting up a parameter for the sheet metal thickness and offsetting the members in Frame Generator that parameter. Now, I've accidentally discovered that I can select the outside edge of the sheet metal part to attach my frame members to. Is that a valid workflow? If it is, its a bit of an epiphamy for me. Using a parameter in FG as an offset required me to edit each member with FG and update it to get the offset to use the current parameter value.

When creating a new part in an assembly and I select a face of an existing component, how does Inventor determine the orientation and origin of that new part?   I understand how Inventor works when I select the plane/origin of a part or pick out in space in the assembly. But the placement based on the face of an existing component seems random..

I normally do not like creating parts inside of an assembly but I was trying some new workflows.

AutoCAD Inventor :: How To Shorten Shaft By Using Ends

Feb 28, 2012

I am using the design accelerator to create a shaft with multiple features. Works well. This shaft is 90"+ in length and although I realize we create in full scale, having it display into my drawing in full scale is unnecessary because one diameter is nearly 60" long. As such I would like to shorten it by using a shaft end, but cannot figure how to do it.

Just to be clear, by shaft end (term used in Mechanical) I refer to the squiggly lines that basically fudge the OAL of a component.

AutoCAD Inventor :: Create Thumbnails For Parts / Assemblies

Nov 13, 2012

We have thousands of parts & assemblies, and want to create a thumbnail image of each for use with our production software. Unfortunately task scheduler only exports to solid models, not images. How to achieve this via macros, VB or iLogic. The process would go something like:

1) open (each) file
2) turn 'all work features off' (not essential but it would be nice so work planes don't show up in the thumbnail)
3) go to 'home view'
4) zoom to extents or zoom all
5) 'save copy as' to a set location (not same location as part or assy) with file name of "<PartNumber>.png" (not same as original filename)
6) turn 'all work features on' (if we managed to turn them off)
7) close (and repeat process for the remaining parts & assy's).
