AutoCAD Inventor :: 2013 - How To Cut A Profile In Shaft Along A Pitch
May 30, 2013
i am trying to design a shaft with a cut out that would cut along the shaft a a set angle and wrap around the shaft.
I am going to have a bearing ride along the cut out and cover this to a linear motion but can't seem to grasp how you do this in inventor 2013.

Questions below pertain to using Autodesk Inventor 2013:
What factor of safety value the Shaft Generator program uses when you run the calculations?
Does the factor of safety value change when you are not using the inventor user material option?
Lastly, when exactly do you know when to use the density option in the calculation properties or not?

I have created a shaft and splined one end of it successfully. The shaft is the same diameter at both ends and I need to spline the other end as well but when I try, I get the following error messages, Cannot create iFeature. Not possible to create shaft groove. Splining the first end went without a hitch but Inventor absolutely refuses to spline the opposite end of the shaft. The shaft diameter is correct for the spline I have chosen (same as the major diameter)

In the inventor drawing, while showing hole callouts for TAP, it is coming along with thread pitch (Ex: M12 x 1.5). But I dont want to show the pitch. How to call out only TAP size(Ex:- M12) without editing the dimension.

I am using the design accelerator to create a shaft with multiple features. Works well. This shaft is 90"+ in length and although I realize we create in full scale, having it display into my drawing in full scale is unnecessary because one diameter is nearly 60" long. As such I would like to shorten it by using a shaft end, but cannot figure how to do it.
Just to be clear, by shaft end (term used in Mechanical) I refer to the squiggly lines that basically fudge the OAL of a component.

I am trying to create a simulation in which a shaft rotates and the a spur gear attached to the other end rotates with it. When I apply torque to shaft, the shaft does rotate but the gear does not. I believe I have done something wrong with the constraints.

When we make an external threaded part, like a stud or something, I'd like to save my lathe guys some time looking things up by showing the pitch diameters on the thread callouts.
I've looked through some posts on this and it doesn't seem like there's an easy way to do it in an automated fashion, even though the data is in the Thread.xls file. I'd really like to not have to look it up to make every print.
First, I thought I'd just use the "Custom Thread Designation" field, but as soon as I changed it in the XLS file, I kept getting alerts in Inventor saying that there was an error in the thread family because the callout applied to multiple fit classes or something like that. So that didn't work out very well. So....
1. Is there a way to do this?
2. What is the point of the "custom thread designation" infrastructure? Am I not using it correctly?

You can create a variable pitch helix by using the Equation Curve feature introduced in Inventor 2013.
Create a new 3D Sketch. Start the Equation Curve command.
Here are equations that I use to create helical curves. Many other variations exist.
Cartesian coordinates:
x(t) = radius * sin(360 * num_turns * t)
y(t) = radius * cos(360 * num_turns * t)
z(t) = height * t
[Code]....
When you sweep a profile along a helical path, use the plane normal sweep (instead of perpendicular sweep) to orient profiles suitable for coil or spring. In the example below, the sweep path is a constant radius, variable pitch helix.

I need a conical spring that can change in pitch as it tapers. Basically the spring starts in a compression style and tapers down to an expasion style. The CNC spring machines are capable to produce it, but am I able to, through Inventor? If not when will we have this feature capability?

I have written some VB code which updates parameters in a model. I would like the code to update the shaft parameters. The shaft is created using the shaft generator. I can use a parameters to set the lengths, diameters and fillets. But when the parameter updates the length stays the same. If I open the shaft assembly, click 'edit using design accelerator' and then click 'ok' in the window the shaft updates. Is there anyway to do this automatically?, maybe through iLogic or API?

what I would like to know is the 'simple' way to create a keyway on a shaft in the middle that does not connect to the ends. End connecting keys are pretty basic to draw and extrude thru (maybe still a better way?)

I migrated to 2013 last week (from 2012). I have a welded part which consists of only two items: a hub and a plate. I brought in that welded piece into another file which is going to take care of the machining. I machined one side without any issues. The second side refuses to machine the back of the plate. It does everything else but will not cut into the back of the plate.
Please find attached the part I am trying to machine 60077B which is made of 60077F which in turn is made of 50176 & 50204. The final thickness of the plate is supposed to be 1" currently it holds its ground at 1.063".

How I could go about creating a standard locknut thread, with the shaft generator (easy so far) BUT create a proper single rounded end key way? It does the end of the locknut groove with the rad that exits the shaft, but in complete truth (and 15+ years of experience.) I have never seen this done in the real world.

is it possible to produce something like in the attached image using the design accelerator? Instead of making a cylinder and sketching the spline patterns and extruding? To me there must be a way besides sketching and use the library's of standard splines patterns and sizes.

Just upgraded a user to Autodesk Building Design Suite Premium 2013 but AutoCad 2013 and AutoCad MEP 2013 are not saving settings.
On first use the crosshair is large and angled, not standard. If I run "Rest values to default" then the settings are standard until I either restart AutoCAD or open a drawing then have the same strange cross hair.
Have tried creating a new profile, setting it as default startup profile by altering the shortcut but no matter what settings are not saved and revert to strange cross hair once AutoCAD is re-opened or a drawing is opening. If logon to computer as a user without a roaming profile all works fine.

We have loaded copies of AutoCAD Architecture 2013 on several workstations. We had tried brining over older profiles (from 2008)- which did not work, so made up new ones. ANYTIME we go into the profile settings to load a different profile beyond the default, AutoCAD Architecture (US Imperial), eventually while working the program will crash. We've wiped out installations of the program, registry and all, and re-installed without brining over any prior data. Same issue.
Even when using a seperate "default" profile us as (Global) or (Metric)- same issues. The problem with staying/modifying the workspace for the US Imperial is it will not load the complete menus with the MENULOAD command (only loads EXPRESS). If we work within the (US Imperial), no crashing, but again, the menus are not available within that profile for some reason, so that is not an acceptable solution.

I have encountered an error in 2013 MEP. Autocad will suddenly not load and it appears that it gets hung up looking for a profile that does not exist. "AutoCAD MEP (US Imperial)" If I am logged in as administrato,r it opens fine. In my own domain, however, it does not. I have repaired, uninstalled and reinstalled to no avail. Incidentally, all of the other Autodesk programs work. Any thoughts on where I can find that profile so that I can redirect to it?
