AutoCAD Inventor :: Loft And Thicken Results In Broken Surface
Jul 19, 2013
I am having problems creating a profile around a path. The profile (image-1) resulted in an undesirable corner (image-2). Which I don't know if that can be fixed. My workaround was to create a lower profile, and then loft between the 2 rails.
The loft results in a twisted surface (image-3). So to correct this under loft> transition I turn off automatic mapping and edit the point set. I always end up with one extra set of points, or edge, and end up having one set of points on top of another, a duplicate edge. Which I believe is where my problem lies. However I can not delete this extra point set, so there is not much I can do there. Am I missing something? This results in a surface loft (image-4). When I thicken this surface by 6mm it results in this broken solid (image-5)
I have tried merging tangent surfaces in the loft command, which appears to work better, but when using thicken the error message reads that the thicken operation did not produce a meaningful result. When I change the thicken direction I get a solid, just not the one that I need.
I had many other strange errors, and seemed to have solved some of them by taking the fillets out the sketch, and applying them to the solid. But this should be an easy operation, and I can't seem to make this work at all.
I am using Inventor 2014 and the ipt file is attached.

I'm making these legs for a piece of furniture. I need this to be a solid object.
So I drew a vertical line, set the radius using circunferemces. Then (can't remember how, it was long time ago) I manage to turn them into surfaces (circles, so it's an area).
Now when I loft them, it won't result in a solid. Why?

I'm loft retarded. What I did here was loft to a tangent work plane, then did a sketch on the top surface and extruded the shape that I want. There has to be a better & easier way.

Attached is an Inventor 2012 part file. I am trying to perform a surface loft with multiple sketches and rails. Each time I try to perform this operation I get the following error:
Error: The attempted loft operation had problems with the specified rail curve not intersecting one or more sections. Try repairing the rail curve so that it intersects all the sections.
I have corrected this issue as much as I know how by project the rails onto each sketchs workplane and then using the projected points to constrain the sketch. It is not working.
It is very difficult to explain, but I have attached the part file. It was created from Autodesk Inventor 2012.

When importing objects into Inventor, all surface objects are being joined together into 1 composite surface. What I need is multiple surfaces, or seperate surface/composite objects.
Capture 1
Shows 3 solids imported from Rhino
Each solid is a sepreate solid
Capture 2
Shows 2 solids and 1 surface composite imported from Rhino
Capture 3
Shows 1 solid and 1 surface composite imported from Rhino
1. Why is Inventor creating 1 composite from multiple non intersecting surfaces?
2. How can I avoid this from happening?

I typeset long documents which often include several hundred labeled photos and illustrations. Much of our art is created off-site, but we label the figures in-house. In the past, this has been done in Illustrator, but I prefer to do it in InDesign.
Exporting an InDesign document as an .eps results in fractured type. Opening the .eps in Illustrator, a single word is now comprised of random groups of letters, and some of the characters are outlines. In the Export EPS dialog box, I've tried every combination of options under "Embed Fonts" and "Data Format." Is this a bug, or are .eps files created from InDesign not intended to be fully functional in Illustrator?
As an aside, InDesign files placed within InDesign documents often cause the program to crash when exporting to PDF. Perhaps that is a subject for another post, but it's basically the only reason I export InDesign files as .eps (so I can re-link the offending .indd file to the .eps and export to PDF). I don't really want to open InDesign-created .eps files in Illustrator -- I'd rather simply place the .indd as a link -- but sometimes it's expedient, and I'm curious as to why the type becomes fragmented.

I have a solid that was created by extruding a regioned profile. I have made a lofted item (Yellow), that I will have to subtract from the solid (Green) to create a hole. When using the subtract command, I recieve the following error.
"The selected surface was ignored. Surfaces cannot be subtracted from solids or regions. At least two solids, surfaces, or coplanar regions must be selected."
I have tried convtosolid as well & to no avail.

layman what Autodesk is wanting me to change? Trying to use "loft" to skin the surface of 5 polylines. It will do the first, second, third and 5th for a surface, but doesn't like the 4th polyline I created.

As you can see, the nature of my model forbids me from making a 3D solid using LOFT.
The top surface is consisted of 3D polyline and arc, which if "joined" will be become a spline.
The bottom surface can easily be joined into polyline.
If I loft the top and bottom, it'll only give me a LOFTED Surface, which is not I want (wanted a 3D solid).

This sheet metal model was working fine, until I decided to check it against the original AutoCAD drawing. Once I finish the "Side layout" sketch, the two thicken features had exclamation marks.
Create Thicken/Offset feature failed
00014118master.ipt: Errors occurred during update
Thicken7: Could not build this Thicken
The attempted operation did not produce a meaningful result. Try with different inputs. Thicken feature is where I left "End of part"
If I tick "Automatic blending", it still works, but I want to create a new solid.

I've noticed it with 2013, and it's same behavior in 2014.
1. Measurement between yellow faces shows 200 mm
2. Do Rebuild all and measure again: 200 mm
3. Move EOP behind Face1 and measure 200 mm
4. Move EOP down: 200 mm
5. Unsuppress Thicken1
6. Move EOP behind Thicken1: 205 mm now is ok.
7. Move EOP full down: 205 mm
8. Do Rebuild all. Now you get 195 mm. Funny to see, that the red face is moving, too.
9. Move EOP behind Thicken1 and back again. Yellow and red faces are well again.
10. Do it again, and again
I'll have to inspect several of my sheet metal files. And I think, Adesk should have a look here, too.

How can I thicken/offset an entire part without having to select all the faces individually? The 'chain select' option is not good enough for selecting all faces/surfaces that meet and form an edge with no fillet.
Is there still no way of doing this in 2012?

I'm constructing a simple test track for my university project, and I have managed to get the geometry of the track all sorted. I'm struggling to assign a bitmap image of a 4 lane road surface to the track. When I assign the material all I get is a grey surface with no lane markings. I figured the size may be wrong, but I have tried adjusting the size settings in the co-ordinates roll out in the material editor, with no luck.
A few screenshots are in here [URL]........

I have been using AutoCAD to create product designs (baby bottles) for the last three years. I am normally drawing lines, arcs and splines to create the shape, then I use PEDIT to create a closed polyline and REVOLVE to create a SOLID 3D object from that shape.
Couple days ago, AutoCAD is not longer creating 3D solids when I use REVOLVE as usual (even using older files and/or the same shapes or polylines that I have used before to create 3D solids). The result of REVOLVE is "SURFACE (REVOLVE)" (I got that from properties). But, the most uncommon thing is that AutoCAD is revolving fine one or two times per day after many many tries. (normally I am closing and opening files and trying to revolve some stuff many times, using the same process and suddenly it revolves the sahpe as a 3D solid)
I attached a picture showing two objects created using the same group of lines, splines and acrs. One is a solid 3d object and the other one is a surface (revolve) as result of using REVOLVE command. WHY????

I have got the ole Program Errors Dialogue back again. It seemed to stem from a rogue data shortcut that got broken.
I could not delete the broken surface reference, so had to create another data shortcut, create a reference and then I had the opportunity to delete the rogue surface and then the data shortcut.
Anyway, I got this error on Audit. (see image attached)
and this was the audit command line dump...
Command: audit
Fix any errors detected? [Yes/No] : y
Auditing Header
Auditing Tables
Auditing Entities Pass 1
Pass 1 100 objects audited
AcDbDictionary(8AB)
XData String Length 260 > 255
Truncate to 255
AcDbDictionary(8AB)
could not be repaired.
Pass 1 30600 objects audited
Auditing Entities Pass 2
[Code]...
I may have made an error by importing a data shortcut I didn't need in past weeks on this job. When a data shortcut is broken, it is quite hard to remove the reference.
Anyway, perhaps I just need to upgrade but I don't want to do it for this curent project as I am almost finished. (famous last words).
So what is causing this error that cannot be fixed? I didn't ask foran Xdata string to exceed 255 characters...

I am preparing some water paper decal graphics which will go onto a black surface. I have made decals using either a solid yellow or a gold uniform fill with CD6 & RGB color model
I have increased the printer (Canon Pixma 860) intensity to the max.The end results don't seem to pop on the black background surface like they do on the white decal paper background.

I have a cylinder on top of a curved surface; I want to make the cylinder land adaptively to the surface, so I projected the circular face of the cylinder in the surface, which ended up being a 3D sketch. I tried to loft a solid between both curves, but it always gives me errors. Some examples are:The attempted operation did not produce a meaningful result. Try with different inputs.Multiple disjoint loops found in a profile section.
I have had success when trying to do the same thing with curved surfaces in two dimensions only (e.g. extruding a 2D curve), but I think the error is produced since the curved face I am trying to use belongs to an elipsiod.

Okay I've been building random things to teach myself how to use Inventor and right now I'm stuck on a rim I'm creating. My question is.. is there a way to copy and paste a lofted item since there are three parts to it (2 planes and 1 guide) because I need 4 more spokes and if I copy the loft it copies all three parts seperately. Then when I paste and orientate the small end of the loft to the plane I want it tells me "Unsatisfied Geometric Inputs".

I am having trouble trying to get the Loft-1 to run the same shape as Revolution-2 .Picture 1-1 shows how Loft-1 is slightly off centre to Revolution-2 at the top .could i model the Loft-1 and Revolution-2 using different tools in one command making it a smooth shape. Another problem i have is how do i make Revolution-2 at the end terminate into Revolution-1 smoothly.I tried using Loft but it kept getting fail message.Picture 1-2 shows where to terminate the end into the Revolution-1 body.

I have created a loft from 4 different sketches. Now I want to make a drawing with the front, side view and the dimensions of the 4 profile sketches from the loft. But I can’t find a way to put the sketches from the part on my paper. It works with copy-paste ;^) but this is not the way I want it (it’ll not change when I change the profiles in the part).

So 1 ingoing section en 2 outgoing sections.

I am following the U-Tube exercise called "Emergency Light (Cabinet) volume 1". I am at time stamp 1 hour 26 minutes, exactly.
In the video they use a Loft command in order to cut a shape out of two sketches numbered 10 & 11. I have been copying exactly and am having difficulty at this stage of the model.
Is there any reason why I am managing to use the Loft command earlier perfectly but not at this point.

And I don't require this but i would like to show the splines on the ends to "feather" out to the round like the actual axle does. (this is just for aesthics) I have the extrusion done, But I can't figure out feature is requied to do this, loft?

I'm trying to produce this loft but the rail I really need it to follow won't produce any results. The other ones on the 3d sketch will work just fine but not the regular sketched one. It seemed to work when I made the rail a straight line but I need it to follow the edge of the surface which is a line, tangent to small r3 arc, tangent to line and connected through projective geometry from the original surface sketch.
