AutoCAD Inventor :: IDW To PDF Diameter Symbol
Jan 5, 2009
When I save an IDW as a PDF using the 'Save Copy As' function the spacing on the diameter logo for dimensions running up the page gets lost and makes it difficult to read and confusing. (see attached pic). I am not sure if it is a style thing, or a template issue, or just a general inventor fault.

We've been having trouble with all our IDW's, whenever we put a dimension or text with the diameter symbol it plots as 'Q'.
Even in print preview it still appears as the diameter symbol, although when actually printed, it comes out as 'Q'. To combat this in the meantime we have firstly been creating PDF's which display the correct diameter symbol and then printing.
i.e Ø30 on IDW prints as Q30 on paper.
We are using Autodesk inventor suite 2009.

How to treat reference diameter dimensions.
If I open up an session of AutoCAD, reference dimensions enclose the diameter symbol in the parenthesis.
Using Inventor, however, the diameter symbol is put outside the parenthesis.
Which is right? It seems silly to make extra work for the user for otherwise identical drawings.

I don't know if it's a bug...
When using dual units on a drawing ( millimeters and inches for example) the symbol "diameter" is no reproduce in the second unit ... see pictures below!

How do I go about increasing the diameter to a degree symbol? Am using the ROMANS.SHX type of file, and when used the degree symbol is sort of miniature (looking and plotting) in comparision to the numeral next to it.
What number do I have to alter in the .SHX file to enlarge it then?

I have a DWG that contains text in TAHOMA font. When I create a PDF using DWG to PDF, everything is plotted correctly, except for the text object containing a diameter symbol (%%c).
In the custom properties of the plotter configuration, I have checked the box to capture all fonts, so text in TAHOMA is also plotted. If the text object contains a diameter symbol, the entire text object is not plotted. If there is no diameter sign in the text object, everything works fine.
If I change the font to ARIAL, everything is plotted correctly, so I assume the problem lies in the TAHOMA font.
If I check the box to capture all fonts as geometry, the diameter symbols are plotted, but I do not want to capture my texts as geometries.

The attached picture is me trying to balloon a part. I would like to just add some notes to the balloon so that I can update them manually but all I can find is to have a symbol. So I created a symbol, the insertion point for the symbol is shown. For some reason I get an extra number and the symbol offcenter. Why is this happening? What I'm really looking for is a balloon that is fully customizable so that I can just add text to the top and bottom and fill out the details.

Curious, I am trying to get numbers 'engraved' (extruded) into a diameter of a dial ring. I was able to create a couple of planes to create the marking lines around the OD, but am unsure how to add numbers and extrude said numbers (in the easiest fashion possible). I need to go from 0 to 90 on the longest marking that starts at 0° and is every 36°.
Also, that being said, with the little I tried and was unhappy with, I created a text box at the 0° marker but the text was in the wrong rotation the marker and rotation box was greyed out. How can I resolve this...or is it even related?
File attached.

I design molds for the rubber industry and I was using Acad 2000; I am just now starting to use inventor. I need to used the ordinate dimensioning although I need the dimension to be given as a diameter and not as a radius. Is there anyway to scale the ordinate dimension automatically as 2:1? This way when I give the prints to the tool room they don't have to manually double every diametrical dimension. The prints that I draw only show half of the mold, there for needing a 2:1 dimension scale.

I am trying to edit my drawing template dimension style to always do a diameter (if it is a circle). Right now it defaults to radius and I manually right click and change it. I found all sorts of styles for how it displays the radius and diameter, but didn't find where to set the default.

My company is trying to Standardize all drawings produced to 1 format. the one we are attempting to create would be in the form of: nominal upper limit^lower limit. this is easily acheived in autocad and linear, chamfer, and hole/thread dimensions in inventor. but radii's and diameters from a round surface (as apposed to linear diameters) we have run into a snag with. We cannot seem to find a way to either remove the prefix symbols or be able to insert text between the symbol and tolerance.
below is a illistration of the problem and the form of the new dimensions.

I keep hving trouble with a hole and the diameter tolerance.
Create a simple hole, single diameter concentric and specific depth. I go to the tolerance window for the diameter and change it to a Limits-Linear. I enter my values .3758 and .3754. Precision is .1234. I clikc OK, then go back to the tolerance, and its reset both values to .3756 What gives???? I've deleted and recreated the hole, edited it about 10 times, and still the same effect.

When we make an external threaded part, like a stud or something, I'd like to save my lathe guys some time looking things up by showing the pitch diameters on the thread callouts.
I've looked through some posts on this and it doesn't seem like there's an easy way to do it in an automated fashion, even though the data is in the Thread.xls file. I'd really like to not have to look it up to make every print.
First, I thought I'd just use the "Custom Thread Designation" field, but as soon as I changed it in the XLS file, I kept getting alerts in Inventor saying that there was an error in the thread family because the callout applied to multiple fit classes or something like that. So that didn't work out very well. So....
1. Is there a way to do this?
2. What is the point of the "custom thread designation" infrastructure? Am I not using it correctly?

I am forced into editting an assy constraint. So I go thru the menu and except the edit.
Constraint box opens / and iventor says "ready" but it will not let me select and surfaces to define the mating.
My question is What is it the constraint is ready for?

I want to make a part with two intersecting holes. The first one is threaded with a 3/8 BSP thread, and the second hole is just a normal unthreaded one with the same diameter as the first.
Normally, if I was making two unthreaded holes with the same diameter I would define a parameter called 'holedia' or something and link both holes to this parameter so I can change it easily if I want; no problem.
But because this time it's a threaded hole, I can't specify the diameter. I don't know what it is because Inventor just looks up '3/8 BSP female thread diameter' in some table. So what do I reference as the diameter of the second hole?
At the moment I'm just looking up a chart of BSP threads on the internet and entering the major diameter manually, and this works although it's a bit of a hassle. But if I wanted to change the hole to 1/2 BSP; I'd have to go back on the internet and find the new diameter to use for the second hole.
There must be a way to 'parameterise' the Inventor-generated diameter of the first hole, and then reference this for the second one, isn't there?
I tried making a driven dimension linked to the first hole and referencing this in the second, but this didn't seem right and it wouldn't update itself when I changed from 3/8 to 1/2.

The default format for a radius and diameter dimension is inserted with a prefix "R" and diameter symbol ahead of the measured dimension. Our company standard pre-Inventor was to place either "RAD" or "DIA" after the measured dimension. We can not seem to find anywhere in the setup to change how these type dimensions are inserted as a default or custom setting.
Can we change/customize the radius and diameter dimension formatting?
