AutoCAD Inventor :: Drawing Standard Geometry With Multiple Dimension Values?
Jan 27, 2012
I am currently endeavoring to translate some (very) old print drawings of standard geometry used by my company to electronic format with Inventor. Many of these standards include a matrix of certain dimensions (noted by a letter variable on the drawing, such as "A") and what their values should be, given the required size of the geometry's main feature, like the cross section of an o-ring that is supposed to go with it. Is it possible to build such variable/multiple value dimensions in Inventor and have a corresponding matrix printed on the drawing with it?

I'm using Inventor 2013. I created an assembly where I did a lot of top down modeling (meaning components in the assembly were created in the assembly. All but a handful of the components are adaptive to other components). When I went to make my drawings for having the components made, I started noticing that some of the dimension values were wrong. I could go into the model and verify the features, but when dimensioning on the drawing it would not match. Furthermore, this didn't occur on every dimmension on the drawing. Not even half of them were incorrect, but it only takes one to really mess up a part.
I've attached a screen shot of what I'm seeing. The 15.2 and 5 dimmension are correct, but obviously those don't add up to 31.37. I know I can manually override this dimmension, but only if I know to do it. I tried to do a drawing of another part in the same assembly and eventually found a similar problem.
Finally, I created a step file of the 1st part (to strip away the adaptivity) and when I created the drawing again, the problem went away.
My question is, is there something I did in the assembly / creation process that would have caused this?

I have a complete gearbox drawing from a previous work and I would like to use it again but with different dimensions.
If I edit the dimensions and enter different values its not enough because when I hit the inquiry tab and dimension, obviously it will be the old measure value.
My question would be how to change the whole drawing to a new dimension values? I think there is no need to redone the whole gearbox again with new dimensions. My drawing is in metric (millimeters).

I've come across this many times now. When in an assembly, I create a sketch. I then try to project geometry and I will sometimes get this error:
"Cannot constrain or dimension reference or fixed geometry."
why I can't project edges/faces/points of certain parts?

I am having trouble with Iparts getting a red cross due to dimensions and constraints to unresolved reference geometry. If, for example, I have Hole 2 dimensioned from Hole 1 in one member and in another member I suppress Hole 1 and Hole 2 I get an error stating (correctly) that the sketch for Hole 2 has a "Dimension to unresolved reference geometry". I understand why I should get this error if Hole 2 was unsuppressed and Hole 1 was suppressed but why do I get this error when they are both suppressed.
If I get this error on a member that has these two holes suppressed and I switch back to a member that has them both active the error dissapears. I guess in the end this is a question for Autodesk. Can you set up Iparts so that when a feature is suppressed Inventor completely ignores it instead of still trying to resolve it. This functionality is a major headache for us because we don't want to leave models with the Red Cross on but if we want to dimension our features appropriately (ie referencing other, related features) we have to leave a model with errors in it.
See attached part. If you switch within the first 2 members there are no errors, if you move into the last 2 members you will see the cross highlight.

I need multiple (say two) instances of the same text values (in the same drawing) but in different formats.
Consider this: I have a drawing sheet with a title block that contains the drawing number and the author's name at the bottom with some other drawing details. Now I wish to have these "values" arranged in a matrix form at the top also, for indexing purpose.
TitleBoxMonoSpace.png
One way is to manually enter each value, one by one, in the matrix box but that would be too time consuming. So, is there a way to automate this; where I can enter the values in the bottom title block, which would automatically update the above matrix?
I believe it can be done using a combination of Attributes and Fields but am just not getting it. To make the issue even worse, I need Numbers without hyphens (-) and only Initials of the author's name!

Way to round decimal dimension values to the nearest 1/16"? For instance, 43.0599 would display as 43.0625 (On a drawing). Tried playing with tolerances, but thought it would be better addressed as customization.

if it is possible to increase the number of recently used values/parameters in the dimension dialog, during part sketching. For one part, I use approximately ten parameters that will be used repeatedly. When I'm done with one sketch and start with the next, only the last five parameters are in the recently used parameter list. (Create dimension --> select arrow on right side of dialog, see attachment Dimension_Dialog.jpg, excuse me for the poor quality ). It would be much more comfort to have more parameters in this 'recently used'-list.
Furthermore I'd like to know if it's possible to widen the parameter-list. In my case I've several parameters that start with the same prefix, followed by a differentiating suffix. When I create a new dimension, select the arrow on the right and select 'List Parameters', I have to adjust the width of this dialog every time to see the entire parameter. (see picture Dimension_parameters.jpg)

I'm trying to draw standard flat head socket cap screw size 1/4-20 with 5/8 length. I've tried to draw it with the exact dimensions (converted inches to mm) but the head doesn't turn up correctly.
I've done metric screws with dimensions from that site (mcmaster-carr) and they turned out just right.URL....

I'm new to the style library and how to take an existing drawing that was created on one standard, and changing it to another standard I just created. The new standard has different dimension styles, text, and layers. I've added all the styles to my style library and I've set the new standard to the active standard in both the styles and standards editor and the document settings. If I create a new view, it comes in on the new standard, but the existing views are still on the old. How to I get the existing views on the new standard?

Why is it that when I create a dimension across geometry the dimension shows true, yet if I create sketched geometry in the drawing view it does not?
What I need to do is create an arc of swing for a door. So I create a sketched arc and then want to dimension the arc radius of the door, yet the dimension shows not true. How do I make it true? And why can't I snap to model geometry in the drawing view?

Working in assemblies with multi-solid parts or parts with derived geometry generates unstable environments with multiple crashes per day. Some crashes don't even prompt a crash report. This has been going on through multiple versions of Inventor up til 2012 which I am currently using now. Has or will this ever be addressed?

I am trying to have one drawing with B size and E size sheets I am trying to get the border, title block and standard to change when the sheet format changes. I can get it to work when I run the rule but have hard time find information to just change when sheet format changes. And I can't find anything or I should say a sample of how to. I think I found the code just don't know how to make it work. Here is what I have so far.
SubMain()
IfActiveSheet.Size="E"Then
ActiveSheet.TitleBlock="G&T (E)"
ActiveSheet.Border="G&T Border (E)"
EndIf
IfActiveSheet.Size="B"Then
[code].......

does Inventor offers any option to break geometry lines in drawing behind the text (e.g. notes and dimensions)? I tried this in IV 2009 as well as in IV 2011, but the result is the same in both version, shown on first image. The text is sometimes difficult to read when it is crossed with geometry lines.

I'm sure this has been asked many times but none of the queries I used brought up a similar question. My issue is that I recently spent a lot of time annotating a detail view with leaders attached to geometry, leaders not attached to geometry, and sketches constrained to geometry projected from the view.
I made some modifications to the model which didn't re-locate any of the components that I'd annotated, but somehow the detail view got shifted, and all of my leaders are pointing to the wrong place and the parts of my sketch that weren't constrained to geometry are in the wrong place as well. Some of the leaders seem to have held to their posts better than others, but for the most part my annotations are worthless and will need to be re-done.

I was told by a customer that he has AutoCAD 2D but that their platform also contains supplementary information regarding the "third dimension", for places, objects, etc ...
If this seems possible to you with AutoCAD 2D, I am wondering where all these data could be accessible for transfering the DWG, including the 3rd dim data, to external platforms ? (in our case 3D virtual worlds) ?

I am using Inventor 2013. For some reason I cannot dimension some of the model entities in the drawing views in an idw file. I can retrieve the model dimensions but it is usually easier to create the dimensions I need in each view. I can select the line, curve, etc. when dimensioning but nothing happens.
After I think about it. What I cannot dimension are lofts that I created with rails. These rails were made up of lines and curves, not polylines. How do I get the sketches for the rails I used for lofting to display in the drawing views so I can dimension those sketches.

I'm trying to dimension an ellipse in the Inventor Drawing Feature. I've attached the .idw files. (the .ipt is too large)I am aware that the ellipse doesn't have a constant radius and was wondering what is accepted practice for these dimensions?
I need to first dimension the external elliptical shape (which I'm struggling at), might just add a note.
Secondly I'm trying to dimension the mesh part, its not centrally align to the part and since I can't put a center mark on I'm not sure how I should dimension this...

So my problem is that I need to include a line on a part drawing that isn't related to the part itself. I need to be able to override the dimension of the line I sketched so that I can include it in my drawing and update the dimension without having to change anything else on the part.
Basically, I want an iLogic rule to overide a dimension, and I don't know how to do that.

I have recently drawn a steel construction, and I am now in the process of making the drawings. A problem that occurs is the length of beams used for bracing. When I click the two outer points, the lower dimension in the drawing appears. This is the length of the line between the two points. To be able to dimension properly, I have made a sketch with a straight line, which is perpendicular to one side of the beam. This has been used, with the point on the opposite side, to find the true beam length (and is showed as the upper of the two dimensions in the picture).
