AutoCAD Inventor :: Dimensioning Compound Angles Using Current View?
Feb 13, 2012
I'm having problems getting Inventor to dimension using the current view option on an assembly. I ungrounded the assembly and constrained it to the angled work planes that I needed so I have to use the current view option, but when I try to dimension to the intersection of the angles, it won't give me a dimension.I'm using Inventor 2011.

In the course of working up a tooling proposal, I attempted to replicate a 3D part from a customer print. While doing so, I noticed that 3D Sketch will not, under any circumstances that I can find, allow an angular dimension between a line and a plane. The customer print has two pipes projecting at odd angles from a base flange, one of which has an elbow. The print lists datum dimensions for the open pipe ends and the elbow, and gives vertical and horizontal angular dimensions to define the directions in which the pipes emerge from the flange. I have defined these three datum points in 3D space without any trouble, but Inventor 2013 will not allow me to define an angle between these sketchlines and the XZ and YZ origin planes, or between these sketchlines and the faces of the flange base I've constructed.
I am currently waiting on a proper 3D CAD model from the customer, and I'm considering longhand trigonometric calculations to place these lines properly, but I find it very hard to believe that Inventor is incapable of constraining a line to lie along what is effectively the surface of a cone.

I'm wondering is it possible to orientate the dimension text alligned to paper(2.jpg) but not the UCS of Isometric drawing(1.jpg).
Sometime I need to allocate my drawing with dimensioning in isometric view because its more easy to read.
I'm placing my drawing in *.idw.

how can i know if the current view/display is align with the current ucs?
let's say i have rotate the ucs about z axis 45 degrees and make it plan now i draw some things and then i change back to world
worlducs = 1
viewdir = 0,0,1
ucsxdir = 1,0,0
ucsydir = 0,1,0
but the display is still in the ucs z 45 (ucsfollow = 0) set the view to PLAN current (now the view is aligned) but the system vars does not change.
For a plan UCS, you would need to compare the VIEWDIR system variable and the cross product of the UCSXDIR and UCSYDIR system varaibles.

When calling the Camera.SaveAsBitmap method and specifying a background color, should it reset the background color of the current view? Calling it in 2014 does this.
Also is there a way to apply the camera settings without changing the current view? I want to change the camera settings but just save the images to a file?

When I use trim or extend commands and have to zoom or pan to select additional objects the command drops selection in previous view and only edits items in current view when executed.
Is there a system variable I can use to change this little time waster?

I'm working on a couple of models (all using the same "stage" for rendering) and I split the models up into their own separate dwgs but retaining the stage area for each. What I'm having an issue with is rendering the current view in model space. What's happening is that I'll either get an all black (meaning nothing was rendered) or I'll get a rendered piece of the stage where a model once was set up, but not the current view for which I want (where the model is set now). So basically, the rendered view is pointing somewhere else. I'm not setting any of the camera views however to render; I've been using just the current view so I can get exactly what I want. I just need to figure out "how" to get it to render what I'm seeing on screen (consistently) and not something off to the side, or a shot of the wall or floor, or the old location of previous renders, etc. Sometimes switching back to 2D wire frame will fix the problem, but now it's not. I've tried setting the camera view current and that isn't working either. It still renders what was an "old" rendered view--like it's stuck in memory. Closing and re-opening CAD doesn't fix the issue. This is very frustrating. All I'm trying to get is a WYSIWYG rendered view.

I'm looking to find the current rotation of my view in modelspace.
This isn't the ucs direction but any arbitrary view i'm using.
For example using 3dorbit to rotate around an object.
I want to match some temp graphics to align flat to my view.
I see there is a VIEWDIR variable. so that may be what I need.

I have several parts to get cut for one of our customers.
The provided the pdf I have attached, and I need to create and .ipt so we can cut it on our tube laser.
This is getting the better of me on how I would put my work planes in order to get the correct angles.
How to accomplish this?

I'm stuck on a few different emboss cases. The following examples are just dumbed-down models to learn from. If it matters - I'm actually embossing patterns on more complicated parts - not text on primitive shapes.
Case 1: Emboss across several surfaces. Please see attached file "Wrap Emboss 1". I can wrap to a face - but not all three faces on the solid that I want my "TEST TEST TEST" message to span across. My embossed text goes off into space - it doesn't wrap around the edge of the solid as desired.
Case 2: Emboss text (or some other arbitrary shape) onto a single (but compound) surface. Please see file "Compound Emboss 2". If the curvature of the part isn't significant - there are a few ways to fake/trick out the model to get a passable result. BUT - when the curvature of the surface is significant relative to size of the text/pattern to be embossed - I haven't yet found a solution that doesn't wildly distort the embossed feature. As the surface of the part is compound - I can't use the "Wrap to Face" option without an error. The resulting embossed feature is unacceptable.

I love annotative scaling of objects it is a great feature. I am however having one problem that I'm not sure if I've missed a setting or something. Is there a way to prevent civil 3d from scaling your annotative objects based on the view scale you are looking at? For example if I zoom out (in model space or max viewport) to show my entire drawing and regen, civil 3d scales all my text and blocks to an enomous scale esentially blocking my entire drawing with solid colour. also if I zoom into a small area to do some detail work all my text becomes microscopic and unuseable. This makes adjusting text so it doesn;t overlap other text very difficult if it never appears at the correct size. Is there a way to freeze annotative objects at thier correct scale (for the current viewport scale) so they dont scale simply because you zoom in or out on a drawing?

In the attached part, I am trying to show a hole drilled at a compound angle. I have attached a pic of what the part is supposed to look like. I am having trouble laying out the plane on a compound angle. The hole should be centered on the width of the flat and drilled through. 15° angle one way and 20° another way.
The ipt file attached is really messy in attemps to acheive the compound angle.
I am using Autodesk Inventor 2013.

I needed to create new dimensioning styles - that I can do. However, there doesn't seem to be a way to apply them to a current drawing. In the Annotation section under Format there are no "styles" listed - not even the default.
So, how is one able to populate the list so one may choose a specific style or another? Or, is there somewhere else I should be looking?

I have a couple of quick questions about dimensioning holes in drawings .
First, if I have a hole in a rod or shaft so the surface isn't a full circle I get the dimension as a radius. Can I change it to a diameter?
Second, in a model, how do I dimension or measure to the edge of a round rather than to it's center? In SW I could hold the shift key while selecting, is there a similar method here?

I design molds for the rubber industry and I was using Acad 2000; I am just now starting to use inventor. I need to used the ordinate dimensioning although I need the dimension to be given as a diameter and not as a radius. Is there anyway to scale the ordinate dimension automatically as 2:1? This way when I give the prints to the tool room they don't have to manually double every diametrical dimension. The prints that I draw only show half of the mold, there for needing a 2:1 dimension scale.
