AutoCAD Inventor :: Adding To Ordinate Dimensions
Mar 20, 2013
I have had to revise a part that someone else created at some earlier date. They used the ordinate dimensions, which works perfectly and looks good.
I have had to add some holes to this part, but can not figure out how to add more dimensions to the existing ones, outside of deleting the dimensions and dimensioning them all over again.
How do I add more ordinate dimensions to the existing?

I use ordinate dimensioning on most all the drawings that go to our shop, but I've run into a problem setting 0,0 on one part.
Along the left side, is a straight edge, but the zero point along the bottom will be a point.
How do I use the point as my zero surface?

I have been using the ordinate set command to place set dimensions on an Inventor drawing in version 2012, I was looking for a similar way to rapidly add dimensions for hole diameters .

We use ordinate dimensions for all holes in parts. Unfortunately there seems to be features frequently left out of ordinate dimension mode. For instance, by default Inventor uses center and quadrant object snaps. Unlike in normal dimension mode, there is no right click option for disabling quadrant snaps. This is a constant annoyance, especially when dimensioning a print with a lot of holes. Is there any other way or hidden setting to disable the quadrant snap? In addition, add member is missing from the new "marking menu" completely so we have to enable the old right click menu to get it back. Are we the only ones using ordinate dimensions?

There was a message on here about using Ordinate Set to create an ordinate dimension to an apparent intersection and I've managed to do that, but is there a way to use just Ordinate to dimension to an apparent intersection? I've tried dragging and right click menu but no luck.
I'm using Inventor Professional 2012.

I am using AutoCAD 2012. I am trying to use ordinate dimensions for the first time. So far, when I want to add the X and Y dimensions for a particular feature in my drawing, I choose the "ordinate" dimension type and then I select my feature. I drag my leader horizontally and it gives me the Y dimension. Then I choose the "ordinate" dimension type again, I select my feature again, and this time I drag my leader vertically and it gives me the X dimension.
I like how this works, but I think I would like it better if, rather than having two separate leaders for X and Y dimensions, I could just have one leader that would show both X and Y dimensions separated by a comma...i.e. something like [X:5.0; Y 7.5]

i was asked to assist with plotting some coordinated on a drawing, the catch is i need to re orientate the UCS with Y+ at the top of the screen, X+ to the right, Y- to the bottom and X- to the left..
I managed to get this part right, that was the easy part.....
However when i went to put any Dimension or even Text on the drawing it was Backwards and Upside Down.
I have added a small screenshot for reference ....

I am new to inventor and from a Solidworks background so parts are similar to me.
I am also new to my workplace and part of my job is to clean up and produce some of our CAD files. We are missing drawings from design documentation and I have decided to start there.
How do am I able to add Dimensions into .idw files other than the Retrieve dimensions function?
In other words how can I add dimensions at will?

I'd like to add a dimension from a feature in a detail view to a feature outside the view, exactly like the dimension circled in red below. I cannot find any information on how to do this, but I suspect it is pretty easy!

In my assembly drawing I have been able to add random dimensions anywhere I needed them.
Except for the detail view. How come I can select the two end points for my dimension, but it wont let me place it?

I am finally getting time to do some organizational cleanup and management with our templates and vault settings. Many of the things are items that I am altering for each drawing/model I make and I would like to make them "stick" for the company standards. Things like altering font size in the styles library, adding part dimensions to the parameters for the parts list, and creating a new content central library where our part numbers are already populated for the parts list and the structural shapes have datum planes in the middle rather than just at beginning and end.

We're having a problem with Ordinate dimensions. When we dimension to a radius corner, we dim to the "implied intersection" of the two lines, rather than to the center of the radius. We make a sketch with the two "tick marks", then dim to the intersection of the tick marks.
Ordinate dimensions are not allowing us to pick the intersection: it wants to put two (or three) dimensions, one to each end of one or the other tick marks (see attached). We use Ordinate dims about once a year, but I'm sure I remember being able to ordinate dimension to the tick marks.

I design molds for the rubber industry and I was using Acad 2000; I am just now starting to use inventor. I need to used the ordinate dimensioning although I need the dimension to be given as a diameter and not as a radius. Is there anyway to scale the ordinate dimension automatically as 2:1? This way when I give the prints to the tool room they don't have to manually double every diametrical dimension. The prints that I draw only show half of the mold, there for needing a 2:1 dimension scale.

Inventor 2009....how to remove an Ordinate dimension (not Ordinate Dimension Set). It seems you can only make one per view. And you can only edit the dimension, i.e. the Origin symbol, but not delete it !? Don't know if there is a change from previous versions of Inventor to 2009.

Im making a window that is 300” I divide it up into 9 equal parts autocad lt 2012 divides it up @ 31 1/8” that is 280 1/8”.
The mullions are two inches wide and there is 10 of them that equals 20” the caulk joints are 3/8” there are two of them that equals 3/4".
So 280 1/8” + 20” = 300 1/8” + 3/4 “ = 300 7/8”

I'm trying to add dimensions to my 3d drawing and can get it to work sometimes and sometimes I can't.
I attempt to do a dimension from the base of a pole to a ground anchor 32' away.
I receive the following message: Oblique, non-uniformly scaled objects were ignored. Specify dimension lin locaiton or
{Mtext/Text/Angle}
I belive it has something to do with getting the UCS set up correctly, I've re-oriented my UCS several time and get no dimensions.

I am using it for producing 2D drawings for some simple prototyping.
I am having trouble with two things - Adding dimensions for when I print the image. At the moment I can add dimensions using the constraint tool but I cant seem to find a way to add concise dimensions specifically for printing.
Also is there a feature or a format that I can make 2d images specifically for printing? Perhaps there is a file format?

I am having a problem when adding dimensions to my drawings.
The problem is when adding either radius dimension or diameter dimension. When adding dimensions to circles the dimension line goes right through the middle of the circle rather than just touching the edge.

how to set my origin point to a hole center. When you create the first ordinate dimension, you have to set the origin marker. For the upper view, I want to set the origin to be the same as the view below it. I can set it to the end of one of the hidden lines from the hole, but I can't seem to set the origin to the center of the hole.

I'm trying to place my ordinate dimension to a theoretical sharp corner and the dimension will only go to the end of the arc (see pict). I try and drag the dimension end point by selecting the end of on line and dragging it over, select the other line and drag it till the two yellow dots meet at the intersection.
When I let go of the mouse button to place the dimension it pops to one side or the other of the arc.

This is a questions about workflow:
I have a rendering image in PNG format that I want to have dimension. These dimensions will be in all 3 planes.
I want them allinged to object sort of like what you get when you view dimensons in perspective (first arrow is bigger than second arrow text is getting smaller as it goes further away etc.).
Currently I import my image and draw each arrow, each line, slant the text and it looks so-so... not the greatest and it is A LOT OF WORK. Then i print the dimensions to and image and combine the rendering and image in GIMP.

I typically as much as possible like to insert my dimensions into my drawing from my model.
I created holes in the model as a 1/4" tapped hole
Yet when I show the dimensions in the drawing they show the minor dimension.
How do I get the 1/4" to show? I have selected the feature and still get these results.

I'm detailing a simple square plate with a good number of holes in it. I create an ordiate set running vertically along the LH edge and select the holes that are close to that side. Origin is the lower LH corner. Works great, easy.
The holes that are closer to the RH side though I'd like to show on that side. So I go to create a second ordinate set for the RH side and choose the lower RH corner as the origin and choose my holes that are close to that edge. The 2nd set will automatically show a second "0.000" dimension on the bottom edge and I can't supress it by right clicking.
Is there a better way to do this? What I've done now is to not use a set but just choose ordinate dimension and go from the opposite edge, which works.... But alignment is better with a set.

I have a question about Radial dimensions... I am trying to add a piece of text (TYP.) to a Radial Dimension... When I add the text; it makes the text and dim line move further from the arrowhead (see image)
I want to be able to move the text on the dimension closer to the arrowhead without actually exploding it... my current solution is to separate the text (TYP.) from the dimension (see image)
Is there a variable or setting to shorten the length of the dim line on the dimension?
