AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Point File Link To Surface Lost
Mar 18, 2013
I think this should be an easy thing to do, but I am having problems figuring it out. I need to repath the location of a point file being used in a surface. My surface will not rebuild because it can't find the point file originally used. Drawing was used on a different computer system, so the point file directory is now pointed to the wrong path.
I have a bunch (hundreds, so manual input not an option) of X,Y points without elevation data that I would like to import into a DWG and assign an elevation that is based on an existing surface object. Is there a way to do this for a point file? The command for inserting individual points would be the "Create points - Surface > Random" but I don't see a way to do this in a batch type method where i have my PNE formatted input file to just move the points to sit on the existing surface.
in my link "link slope to surface", i have the slope set to -2.00%. in the cross sections, it is at a +2.00%. why is this thing not linking at the defined -2%? see image.
When I use link offset to surface and attach on left side, still extend to right. I am targeting a slope stake line polyline that exists on both sides of the roadway, works fine on right side. Documentation indicates that a negative offset value is needed to use to the left. How do I use negative value and target a polyline?
I am re-routing a small stream. I am using generic links for the bed and side slope. I whant the side slope to be 3:1 and project beyond the existing culvert wall in the eg model. can this be done easily?

I just tried to create a subgrade surface using the base link. The surface turned out to be wrong because some of the points in the Lane Outside Super Layer Varying Width subassembly are uncoded. Everything I've looked at seems to be programming related (over my head). Do I need to download a composer for 2014? I didn't see one on the list for 2014.
I am having trouble getting my assembly to work in my corridor. I have a Basic Lane Transition subassembly with a Link Slope to Surface subassembly attached to it. The assembly follows my centerline alignment and the lane widens as designed out to my offset alignments. The slope grading to daylight works fine until the transitional lane starts to widen, then the slope assembly stays at the same point on the lane and does not stay linked to the end of the lane.
I am also having trouble getting the subassemblies to attach to the proper points. I keep trying different OSnaps unitl one seems to work, but I am never sure the subassemblies are connected properly.
How can you "hard code" a link code or point code into a subassembly? I can use Input parameters to create the code, but then the user has the ability to change the code once in C3D?
how can you lock the name of a point or link code?
it is possible to define point/link codes using some conditional expressions. When I try to write in an expression under "Link Codes" I get an error. Is there a way to create conditional codes without the use of "decisions"?
I have got a csv file and want to add to the surface but it says error in adding point file.....don't know what to do. Size of the csv is 13MB and contains about 0.2million points.
Am I correct in assuming that if Surface Labels by One Point is chosen, the slope as shown is the maximum slope of the surface triangle where the point was chosen??

I'm working on a topo survey and the contours are crossing each others (See attached pic) and what I did was edit the surface by adding points. I know that these points are fake, but how does this affect the terrain surface for design point of view? I did try swapping edge and deleting lines but makes it worse. Also as you can see in the pic, I don't see the added points like it did back C3D 2008.
Is it possible to add points to a surface without adding them to a point group? I've got a bunch of ponds I'm doing and it will save me some time if I could just select the points, and not have to put them in a point group then add the point group.
I have created a new assembly that uses a HMA dike rather than your typical curb but my surface always begins at the top of the HMA pavement rather than the top of the curb subassembly. See Picture. Where's the setting to fix this (is it a daylight setting) or it is a bigger problem in that I didn't create the subassembly or assembly correct to begin with?
I'm currently working on a site layout and came across a problem. The drawing that I have has the site layout with all the points and contour lines included. However, the drawing is exploded. Now, I want to get the point properties and surface properties from this file, but it seems like it isn't the original file and it has been edited. This file also does not come with a point file or surface file. Is there a method to get the point, surface or elevation properties from this drawing?
Also, I have heard that you can create a new drawing and create a surface to read the surface properties of the drawing. Is that possible?
I am having a problem using 2014 civil 3D. When I import las files and create a point cloud, and go on to make a surface from those points, it is limiting the "number of points added" to 340134. I am using the lidar las files which each tile or file has an average of 12 million points, and I have tried to create a surface using one file, and up to 28 tiles (where there should be 340 million points). Regardless, one of the files contains 12 million points and I do have the "point density" set to 100, and the "real time density" set to 100. Why will it only use 340,134 points? I have tried all options from "point cloud extents" to "window" and same result. All the points from the cloud are there and displaying fine, it just seems civil 3d is limiting the number of points used for surface.
Surface does exist as we can see the triangles/contours or whatever we choose to display. When we run the Water drop command, we are getting a message saying that the point is outside of the surface. We have selected a valid surface by both picking it visually and selecting it from the dialogue. All layers are on and thawed and we are picking well inside of the surface.
Why it would be telling us that the point is outside the surface?
I have a surface based on a point cloud. I decided to add a few more tiles of data to the point cloud and was expecting that the surface would update (after rebuilding) to include the new extents - but there was no change. The surface doesn't have any boundaries or breaklines but does have edits.
Do I need to add points to surface again? Will this duplicate the orignal point data or would it just add the new data. I didn't want to lose my edits if possible.
I know that there is a limitation on the numbers of points added to a surface from a point cloud. But I'm curious how Civil 3D determines which points to exclude from the surface. Is there a special alorithm/criteria the software uses?
I defined alignments and a surface in Civil 3d, then reopened the same drawing in Autocad 2012 to amend some line work (just because I like drafting in this better). When I next needed to do an inquiry off the surface, I opened the drawing in C3D, but all the alignments and my surfaces were gone! Why doesn't C3D retain alignments/surfaces after you've opened a drawing in Autocad 2012? Would you recommend keeping a separate C3D base drawing for the design work, and another for the drafting? and just xref-ing between the two?
I have a surface, to which I've added data from a ENZ file. No problems - I had a workable surface. I want to be able to work on the drawing at home as well as work. So I brought home the DWG as well as the ENZ file thinking that if both were in the same directory, it would work OK. But I get an error saying the Point file can't be found. I can't see any way to make the file reference relative, rather than absolute.
i have any problem about export point from dwg to *.txt file.i have point file *.dwg from my friend,,but i confused why that point can't export, show warning "No point were transferred from the source" point is in layer 0...I attach the dwg file.
We are copying our original files to a sub folder to make revisions that have only happened after bidding. We want to keep our original bid documents intact. I have created a sub folder called 'Conformed Documents' and added Constructs, Sheets, Elements, ect.
I copied the files over and used the Reference Manager to repath the files. However, all of my schedules and room tags now use the 'NA' prefix because it is not reading the project information. How can i reconnect this folder to the project folder?
How to best smooth a surface created from a DEM file? Contours produced from the surface, particularly in the flatter areas seem to be following the triangles, so you can see the rectangular nature of the grid.
I've attached a screenshot with the contours shown. Up to this point when creating the surface, all I did was add a data clip boundary, then add the DEM file (manually within the surface definition, not using the "create surface from DEM" feature). I had tried some of the options under surface edits & smoothing, natural neighbor interpolation, but the results were still all wonky.
I´m having problem with creating stl file from surface. I need to import stl in another program for rockfalls.
I have create surface from contours, then extract faces, extrude them, union and I got solid..
I have export solid like stl file... But in another program my surface is not smooth, like somethning went wrong while exporting stl, because in autocad civil 3D 2012 everything looks good.
I have found out how I can increase facetres to 10, but It has not affect to my stl file. If there is some another parameter for better resolution of stl files?
My kids were playing with my PC and accidently renamed my main storage drive. I renamed the drive and didnt think much of it until I opened Lightroom.
It has obviously lost the link with my catalog and is now asking to upgrade to catalog to work with LR4. I am concerned that if I go with this option I will lose all the the changes I have made to my images.
I have 55000 photos in the catalog so this would be pretty bad. I have been importing all of my files as DNG for quite a few years now and I am sure I had it set in preferences to embed changes into the DNG Files.
