AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Rectangular Pipe Part Builder

Jun 19, 2012

Is it possible to move the autolayout data of this existing rectangular pipe (see attached). I want my pipe to attach at the top or bottom rather than the middle. I tried creating one from scratch but don't really know what im doing yet and can't seem to get it to validate.I've seen a bunch on creating structures, but not much on pipes.

AutoCAD Civil 3D :: New Part Builder Pipe Displays Incorrectly In Profile View?

Dec 31, 2013

Using part builder, I created a new pipe part for an odd-sized CMP arch pipe.  In plan view, the pipe looks good.  At first glance, I thought the pipe was drawn correctly in a profile view, but I realized that the pipe was displayed with the invert located at the wrong place in the profile view.  I thought this was because the insertion point of the new pipe part that I had made was placed at the incorrect location in part builder.

So, I swapped out the incorrect pipe size for another one that I knew was correct, and then deleted the incorrect pipe from the pipe parts list, and  went back to part builder, and placed the insertion point at the invert of the pipe; then saved the edited pipe part, ran partcatalogregen, added the "corrected" pipe part to the pipe parts list and swapped in the new corrected pipe size to the pipe network.  However, the pipe still displays incorrrectly on the profile view.

The pipe data is correct in the pipe properties: the invert is stated to be located at elevation 20.  The overall height of the pipe , 38" (3.1667') is correctly displayed on the profile view.  But the actual location of the pipe invert is not shown at the correct location, elevation 20, on the profile view.

AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Part Builder - Structure Height

Jan 24, 2010

I am trying to learn Part Builder to create a custom inlet structure. I am able to build the part in Part Builder so it looks like it should and seems to work correctly when I change part sizes. I run into trouble when I try to change the model parameter for Structure Height (SBSH) to a formula invovling Rim to Sump Height (SRS). When I do this and then go to Edit Size Parameters, I get an error " one or more calculations have failed". It does not seem to make any difference what formula I use for SBSH or what size parameter or model parameter SBSH was set to before I entered the formula.

I am able to save the part without any other error messages, however, when I look at the .xml file, SBSH is a constant and not the formula I entered. I can edit the .xml file to enter the formula that I want but still the part does not function properly in a drawing.

I can make a pipe network using the new structure, however, the pipe inverts are not the same as the sump elevation of the structure. They are usually several feet below the sump. I can get the structure sump to match the pipe inverts by going to "Connected Pipes" under "Edit Structure Properties", highlighting the pipe invert elevation and then clicking "Apply". If you change the pipe using "Edit pipe properties" after this, the structure invert does not update as it should.

AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Part Builder - Error Saving COLE File

Dec 30, 2013

I'm trying to do a save as of a previously created and validated part.  When I create a new chapter and try to save the part in the new chapter, I get an error message saying "ERROR SAVING COLE FILE".  What is a COLE file and why am I getting this error?  Could there be a problem because the original part was created in 2013, and now I'm working in 2014?

We recently changed the location of our CAD Standards (such as Pipe Network Catalog).  Can I simply copy the Pipe Network Catalog and paste it to the new location and have everything work the same or do I have to do something special?

AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Calculating Capacity Of Rectangular Pipe (not A Culvert)

May 7, 2013

In Land Desktop using the Hydrology tools, we could get capacities for rectangular pipes based on slope, size, etc.

I have tried using the Hydraflow Express tools for this, but cannot figure out how to use them for a RECTANGULAR pipe (i.e. 10x4) box.  Saw the circular option, but couldn't change where it says circular.

This is not a culvert analysis because we have inlets, multiple slopes, etc.  It is part of an entire system.

I use these tools to layout the system before I want to put it into the analyses software we are using.

AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Pipe Style Part Dimension

May 10, 2013

I have a problem I can't figure out. I have a Pipe Style defined that is set to draw my pipes as double lines in plan using the inside pipe diameter. The problem is that there are a few sizes such as 21" & 30" that will not draw/display the double lines to the correct inside pipe dimension.

It will draw a 27" pipe as 10" & a 30" pipe as 12", but all other pipe sizes are drawn crorectly. I have looked at these in part builder & have also rebuilt my parts list.

What would cause certain pipe diameter not be drawn at the correct size it the style is defined correctly?

AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Using Customized Subassemblies And Parts Builder?

Aug 14, 2012

We are just starting with Civil 3D 2012.  We are doing a pilot project, and the engineer wanted to make a custom curb subassembly matching the exact dimensions (angle from bottom of curb to top of curb) as the county detail.  I didn't think that was necessary and thought we could use one of the generic subassemblies.  usually use the basic or generic subassemblies or do you create your own to match specific municipalities' details exactly?

Do you find that the parts that come with Civil 3D are usually sufficient for design or do you make a lot of custom parts?

AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Depicting Both Slice And Cross Cut Pipe Profiles Of One Pipe

One of the things I seem to struggle with is being able to depict a single pipe when it needs to be shown in one profile as a crossing pipe, and another profile where you you show a lenghwise slice through the pipe.  I end up tracing the pipe with eliptical objects where I'm cutting across the pipe and setting up more for the lengthwise/sideview of the pipe.  Is there a way to have two different styles for the same pipe, one for a cross cut and one for a lengthwise slice?

AutoCAD Inventor :: Automatically Load Sheet Metal / Tube And Pipe Styles In Standard Part?

I'm a bit confused on the style library system built into Inventor - it isn't very intuitive.

I'd like to create my tube and pipe styles as well as sheet metal styles and have to never create them again - regardless of the project/workspace. Is this something that can be saved in the standard part/assembly template files? If so, how?

I'm tired of creating styles every time I start a new document - it is a waste of a lot of time! And I'd like to avoid having to import settings on every document.

AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Structure Label Expression - Circular Versus Rectangular

Dec 13, 2013

I'm trying to create a custom expression in a structure table that will list the "size" of the structure, wheter it be a circular or rectangular structure.  My column simply states size and I want it to label 5' for a circular or 4'x4' for a rectangular (or whatever the specific sizes are).  The thought was to create an IF function, but Structure Shape was not available to use in expressions (among other problems).  Short of using the description field (tedious) as a workaround?

In this example - CB-104 is a rectangular structure and CB-106 is a circular.  I'd like the CB-104 size to read 4'x4'.

AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Pipe Rules Not Followed Exactly?

Nov 1, 2013

I created a pipe rule and applied it to my 6" HDPE pipe in my parts list.  The rule is followed close but not exact.  Here it is:

I created a "cover only" rule for my 6" HDPE pipe.  I have the maximum and minimum cover set to 3.50'.  I have it the same so it will draw my pipe 3.50' deep.  I don't want it to vary.  It for drawing in existing underground power so when we cut profiles and sections the existing power shows up.  We want it to show up 3.50' deep.  I created a label style for my pipe that tells me start cover and end cover of the pipe so I can see it right there on the screen.  The numbers range from 3.50' deep to 4.70' deep.

Why does the pipe not get drawn in exactly 3.50' deep?

AutoCAD Civil 3D :: Structure Insertion To Pipe

Jul 31, 2012

I have this block called gate valve. The base point is at the middle of the block. When I use this block as a style and insert it in profile it always places itself down low on the pipe. As you can see the grip is way above the top of the block and I have to move it into place anytime I use one. If I change the pipe inverts the gate valve block style lowers itself once again and I have to move it up into place. I have changed the base of the block but it makes no difference.

This is how the structure look in the object viewer. Notice the one on the right is the block that needs to be raised, however in the viewer it shows placed correctly.
