AutoCAD 2010 :: How To Flatten Entire Drawing
Sep 26, 2012
I'm working on a drawing that was created by somebody else where certain lines have an elevation that is not 0. This means lenght calculations etc. dont work. Is there a way I can select all and make all elevations 0?

I have a number of lines that will not fillet because they are non-coplaner. Is there a way to globally edit all the lines in a drawing to set the Z coordinate to zero rather than having to choose each line?

I have exported a 3D stick figure to a DXF (these are just lines and no solid objects) and imported it into AutoCAD 2006 (2012 ordered but not installed yet). I normally draw in 2D and want to get the 3D lines flattened, but I am having trouble.
When I issue the FLATTEN command and say yes to remove hidden lines, it takes a while and I do get a 2D DWG, but the lines on the back side of my 3D lie on top of each other. Is there a way to make a block of the lines that lie on a plane and paste them into a new DWG?
I'll try to attach a screen shot of my 3D model (it is a lattice transmission tower).

I'm using AutoCad 2010.
I have received some plan drawings that I'm supposed to do some additional work to. I've found that some of the lines and texts have different z factors. They look really messy in other views than plan view. Is there a command that can put all the work into the same plane, preferably to the xy plane, z = 0? I know there is a command that can flatten 3d views into a 2d drawing but that doesn't seem safe in this case. I know there is such a command in for example Rhino (flatten artwork) but in AutoCad I've never come across it.

AutoCad LT2003 I work in 2D wire form. When I cut and past elements together Z can be anywhere. It becomes a problem trimming , chamfering etc. Is there any way to flatten the drawing so that Z is always zero?

I've been using flatten for a long time and I just noticed that after flattening an objects sometimes it doesn't give you the exact shape of an object. Is there a reason why?

FLATTEN doesn't exists, and when I try FLASTSHOT it asks me for digits and I really don't know what to type.......the ultimate goal is to make all my lines "FLAT" since in top view they look good but in 3D perspective some are just way up and down(non-flat)

I'm using ACAD (2011) most of the time in 3D. I like to work that way and it goes really fast!
Now, sometimes I want to flatten my 3D drawing and show my obscured lines and make them dashed afterwards. With the flatten command and explode it works fine... but... some lines just move! For example, a block with size 100,200,100 turns into a square with size 100.9 x 199.3, even if I use the command in 100% top view!

Just recently I got a chance to try out Autocad 2012. I modeled up an assembly. I then wblocked my individual details into separate files for detailing. I used the new drawing view tool to create my isometric views. The issue I am having is the outer most edges of my views is not being shown all the time. If I zoom in the edges appear, but when you zoom out to view the entire drawing, the edges are no longer visible. It is like the border around the view that the drawing view tool creates is not offset far enough. How to use the new drawing view tool?

So I have this drawing, which has been annihilated by many different people. One area of concern (among many) is the drawing units...some objects are in inches, some in Millimeters, some in feet, etc...
Question:
Is there a way to change the entire drawing to inches, so if I select an object...any object, properties will have it in inches. Or, if I get area of an object, it will read in square inches?

Drawing started in LDD a few years ago. It was on a local coordinate system of 1000,1000.
The drawing has since been migrated to C3D2012. Now we have data in UTM coordinates that we need to match to the old data. Actually, we want to shift/rotate the entire original set of data to match the new UTM data, so we can continue in UTM for all future data collection.
So, I went through and turned all layers on, Thawed them and unlocked them. I made sure all points were visable, etc. Then I tried to move the original data (I also tried the align command, etc., with the same results) and found a glitch. After I moved the data, I found that there was some points and survey figures as well as a cooridore, that had not moved. The vast majority of the drawing had moved as expected, but the afore mentioned data would not move.

I'm experiencing problems with selecting objects. Usually, when I double clicked multi line text, I could edit it, now I get a text: "select an MTEXT object:", which basically means I have to select it again.
Another example of this is quick selection tool. Usually I selected the objects, then went to quick select pop up screen and under "Apply to:" I selected "Current selection". Now, there's only "Entire drawing" option and if i want current selection, I have to re-select it again.
I checked all the selection options and stuff. I attached some screenshots.

So I have a survey of a roadway that was created 15 years ago and was converted into autocad civil 3d 2012. No problems there, however, I am going through the survey and rotating the COGO points (ie Traffic Signs, Utility Poles) and the text to be parallel to the roadway. I am in UCS World and have no problems rotating the points and text to what I want. THe problem starts when I rotate the drawing using UCS 3P so that I am looking at a portion of the roadway that is parallel to my computer screen. Now the text and orientation of the signs etc are no longer parallel to the roadway and did not rotate when I rotated the entire project.
Now I was under the impression the points were to rotate automatically to what I set them as, ie parallel to the roadway. I'm sure this is an easy fix or I am not understanding something.

I complete my drawing, now I want to align the entire drawing to the artboard. Great! How do I do that without messing up all my layers? If I group the objects to align them to the artboard, then they move to one layer, and do not move back to their original layers when ungrouped. I don't want that.

Eventually after I copy and paste with the clipboard enough times within one drawing, the ability goes away and I can no longer copy and past one item from one drawing to a separate drawing. I need to use the clipboard function because that is the only way of getting an item from one drawing to another.
I have download a clear clipboard function but it doesn't work. Closing CAD and restarting does not reinstate the function.

My Autocad has started a new behavior. When (in Win7) I double-click on a drawing file in Windows Explorer, Autocad opens the drawing file and also starts a new drawing, all in the same session of Autocad. Is there some system variable or Windows variable that controls this?

I realize it may be a Civil3D question. When I change my drawing scale in the "Drawing Settings" dialog box to 1"=40', for example. The Annotative scale in the Properties Palette changes to 1"=40'_XREF.

I'm doing a program in Visual Basic 2010. In one of the forms I put a button that when clicked must open AutoCAD 2012 and make a drawing in it. The user will decide where to save it.The steps are these:
1. I added the references Autodesk.AutoCAD.Interop and Autodesk.AutoCAD.Interop.Common to the Visual Basic Project. That's OK.
2. I wrote this in the heading of the form's
- Imports Autodesk.AutoCAD.Interop
-Imports Autodesk.AutoCAD.Interop.Common
3. In the event Click of the Button1 I put this:
Dim acadApp As New AcadApplication 'Create an instance of an AutoCAD Application
AcadApp.Application.Visible = True 'Show the instance of the AutoCAD Application
Dim acadDoc As AcadDocument 'Create an intance of an AutoCAD Document
acadDoc = acadApp.Documents.Open("C:Respaldo TesisDibujo2.dwg") 'Open a Document called Dibujo 2
'Draw a line
Dim PT1(2) As Double
[code].....

I am learning about CS2 now.
Is it best to flatten my images once I get them completed or is it better to keep them in psd format with the layers intact. What are the pros and cons (other than file size of course).

do you flatten your layers when finished? PSD files are huge and flattening seems to compress the size.
Also, if you do flatten, can you open them up again to make further adjustments?

Sometimes, when I have two or more drawings open in the same instance of AutoCAD, another tab opens up on the Windows Taskbar. Here's the scenerio; I have two drawings open. On the task bar, Autocad's icon shows two drawings open. Somewhere while drawing, AutoCAD will start bogging down, especially when switching drawings. On the Window's Taskbar, it will now show three drawings open. Two of which will be the same drawing. There will only be two drawings open. The drawing which is currently on top for editing will be the one that shows up twice. If I change to the other drawing, it takes a really long time to swap. Sometimes, it will sit there for a minute and then swap back to the other first drawing on it's own. I try going back to the second drawing again, and the same thing happens again. The only way to stop this from happening is to completely shut down AutoCAD and restart it. I think it has something to do with the ribbon. And I also notice it more often after doing a CopyBase, but not always.

We have a drawing that when opened for Read/Write on the Z420, it will hang, however if opened Read-Only, it will open successfully.
On the Z400, the drawing can open for Read/Write and Read-Only.
PC Specs
HP Z420
Intel(R) Xeon(R) CPU E5-1607 0 @3.00GHz
64-bit
8GB RAM
HP Z400
Intel(R) Xeon(R) W350 @2.80GHz
64-bit
8GB RAM
I have tested across 4 Z420's and 3 Z400's and have replicated the results as described above on all of the tests.
They are all using the same build, pointing to the same locations, the only different thing is the PC Model.

I recently started using AutoCAD. I drew two floor plans for an assignment I have. Now i'm trying to export the drawing into PDF (with scale set to 1:100) so I can export it into indesign and photoshop, however when I export it a small part of the drawing is cut off. I'm not sure how to describe it, but if you look at the included files you can see what i'm talking about.

We're using AutoCAD Electrical 2012 and on our drawings itkeeps 'scanning the drawing' between every command. You select a line, it scans. You copy by basepoint, it scans, you blink, it scans. How can I make it stop? It is slowing us down and annoying us to no end.
I've already tried the layers filter selected to all and this doesn't fix our problem.

I am in need of flattened 2D line views of the sides and top of the model shown in the attached 3D file. So far, I have found and tried the FLATSHOT command, but...
"There are no solids or surfaces that can be projected."
So apparently, I'm dealing with the kind of 3D model that FLATSHOT was not intended for. How I can quickly get flattened 2D views of this without eating up my entire workday?
