After Effects :: How To Create A Mask On Solid Layer To Hide Certain Area
Apr 16, 2013
I am drawing animations with the brush tool onto a black solid layer which is set to add blending mode.
My goal is to create a mask on the solid layer to hide a certain area of what I drew... but it doesn't change anything.
I noticed when I add another effect to the layer (such as curves) the mask does hide that area of the effect, but thats not exactly what I'm trying to do.
ps. I have After Effects CS6

I have been using Gimp for awhile (love it!) and have always used layer masks with no problems. But for some reason when I create a layer mask by filling in an area with black it isn't 100% opacity. Everything seems to show 100% opacity, but I can see the layers underneath (the mask is maybe at 90%??). If I "show layer mask" it is black where it should be and white where it should be, it doesn't look transparent. All my layers are set to "normal" mode. I'm at a lost as to what setting I must have changed?

Here is what I'm doing...
-Open an image of a blue eyeball
-Duplicate layer
-Change the color of the duplicated layer eye to red
-Create a Hide All layer mask on the top red eye layer then select a brush...
I have tried white and black color, but when I paint on the mask I dont get the blue from the bottom regular layer, nothing happens and I have tried everything I can think of?

I am doing a kinetic typography project for for set to a certain song.
At one point I want two words to be displayed with simple text movement and once those two words are in place I would like an image to rise from behind them to be on top of them(not in 3d sapce but standard 2D). Since text is transparent you can see the image behind the text before the image is set to move.
I tried creating a mask around the image which does mask it out but when I move the image up the mask moves with the image, thus keeping the image masked. I thought maybe a null object with a mask would be needed but I cannot get to see to get it work. I feel this should be easy but I just do not have the skills to put the pieces together....

I have layer with layer mask on it revealing only small rectangle of it.
I want to snap the visible area to guides, but the layer is snapping according to the original layer, and not according to the mask.
Is there any way to snap according to the mask layer?

Using a fresh stock installation of After Effects CS6, when I enable the 3D switch for a solid layer the directional handles will not appear, neither will the bounding box for the layer. Is there a preference setting that I'm missing, or is this just a "fluke" that will require me to re-install the software?

I open something with paint and then I do crop and copy the area. Then I open up another document and paste it. Now I am trying to blend it in. I think I can use layers. Create a new layer, then add a layer mask. Then, at least that's how I have seen it online, I can use the brush tool to make the background reappear around the letters ( letters in my case). But this does not work. The brush only paints it in the background color.

I am trying to create tilt shift effects. issue in selecting focus and blur areas. I do the following - Go to Quick Mask(Press 'Q') --> Select Gradient (Press 'G') --> Then I draw a vertical line to define the focus area. Usually a relatively darker red color used to appear as a band. But suddenly I see a very vague red color. And when I exit Quick Mask (Press 'Q') again the marching ants selects the entire picture and not the focus and blur areas.

Win7x32 and PS CS6.
To reproduce bug create any new file. Create levels layer with any mask. Activate "mask viewing" by pressing Option/Alt and clicking to mask icon on the levels layer in layers panel. Then try to call menu->select->color range.

How can I keep my selection area on the background image or layer after doing a create new layer via copy?
I am trying to make a selection and an inverse of the selection and put each on a seperate layer to do adjustments seperatly without having to go back and reselect the desired area. It seems to disappear after the new layer is created.
Is there a better way to accomplish this, what am I missing?

I am trying to develop an animated GIF to use as a web-ad, I have readthe docs and googled but still having problems :-(
The ad (portrait format) is very simple: a background logo at thebottom of the ad, and three different text messages which rotate. Ithus created a bottom layer with the logo covering the bottom third; asecond layer with nothing but the first text message on the upper2/3rds, another layer with the second text message also in the upper2/3rds and finally a layer with the third text message in the upper2/3rds. While the logo at the bottom should be displayed at all timesthe three different text messages are shown one at a time.
After reading the docs I then expanded each layer with a text messageto be as large as the ad itself. My next step was to try to create alayer mask - for each of the three layers with the text messages, saidlayer mask to cover only the lower 1/3 where it would be transparent.
This is where I ran into problems, no matter what I tried, I could notaccomplish this. There must be something very basic I have yet tounderstand!
Last, in order to create the animated GIF, I exported all four layersusing "replace" in the dialog box. I also experimented with "combine"to no avail. No matter what I tried, I either ended up with an animatedGIF where the logo and the three different text messages over timebecame overlaid, or, an animated GIF where only one thing was shown atone time.
What have I missed?

is it possible to create a donut shape with 1 shape layer (multiple groups)? I can't figure out how to subtract out the hole. I see that there's some blend modes, but no stencil alpha.
Must I use 2 shape layers and track matte, or multiple solids/masks?

I'm a bit lost on why AE is doing this.
I create a null object and make it a 3d layer. I rotate it 90 degrees on the Y axis and then start rotation the X, and Z axis and they do the exact same thing. whats the deal?

Is there a one key click that will turn a layer mask off and on?
Because moving the mouse away and back to retouching all the time is quite a drag.

is there some easy way to hide the scratch area or canvas (like everything outside the normal page) while still working on the image? or maybe alternatively is there some way to have a permanent preview window with the scratch area hidden like in photoshop

In InDesign I can press W to show or hide everything around the page I am working on. In Illustrator I can't find a similar option. I am working on something and a lot of things are outside of the actual drawing area. The problem is that I see everything all the time and so I never get a good impression of how the illustration will look when finished/printed! I now have to export a jpg in order to get a good impression! Or I have to add a layer on top of everything and place white blocks around the actual drawing area in order to get a good impression of the actual artwork.

Is there a way to hide/show title safe area in Illustrator?I know I can turn it on or off using the artboard options, but for ease of workflow I'd like to be able to switch it on/off as I can do using 'Cmd :' for guides?
I know I can show/hide video rulers and I have mapped this as a keyboard shortcut... but can't find any way to do the same with title/action safe?

Once I use a Clipping Mask on a layer is the entire document covered in a mask?
And/or is all the artwork from then on inside the mask?
I've read about how to add and how to remove art from a mask. I've read about how to make and release and lots of other things.
So, then I went and found a lesson that contained the use of a Clipping Mask.
I am suppose to Select the main shape and "just" copy it and move it down (doesn't say rather to Paste in front or back but I assumed in back ~ not that it has mattered thus far)
However, while making the main shape I used Gradient Mesh and used an Offset to create a "replica" and so when I go to Select the main shape the mesh is selected and so when I Paste (in back ~ seems most logical) and then move it down the details such as the colors of the Gradient and other such things are visible in front ~ ??
So, I have been trying to abate my problem in lots of different ways.
I have tried using the Pen tool to draw behind the main shape, I've tried making a New Layer and placing it above and below and inbetween the main shape layer, I've tried adding the artwork to the Mask ... I've tried everything I can think of and I've been through many an article in the manual and FAQ's to no avail.
I suppose, what I think I need to know ... is, how ... how on earth do I draw behind this main shape? Am I not able to do it because I am not getting behind the Mask?

We have this need to have all of the solids in a drawing to be placed in the "solid" layer.
Sometimes folks are drafting lines to develop these solids, and keeping the lines on the "solid" layer, rather than moving them to another layer, or deleting them altogether.
I could get folks to run this command before leaving the drawing.
I'm thinking something along the lines of:
Select all entities that are on the solids layer that are not solids.
If nil, great, do nothing.
If entities are selected, let me do something with them.
I'm hoping the following can be modified ever so slightly.
(setq non_solid (ssget "X" (list (cons 0 "3DSOLID")(cons 8 "solid"))))

My subject line pretty much sums up what I want to ask.
The thing is I've learned how to do both of them, but every textbook exercise I've done regarding one I found out that I can pull off with the other too.
Are they simply two different mechanisms for doing the same thing?

So, I messed up pretty badly today during an interview shoot. I'm not sure what I was thinking, but I felt rushed during setup and screwed up a few things -- including forgetting to turn on my shotgun mic, so I had to sync my external lav recording the hard(est) way.
The worst part, however, is that because I was in a basement I could not elevate my key light as much as I wanted, and it created a glare on the glasses of my subject. I had lined up the light and my seating while asking questions so it didn't reflect toward the camera, but it appears he shifted early in the interview and I didn't notice. Now, there are two white dots in his eyes the entire time. As if this wasn't bad enough, he frequently makes minor head movement that causes his entire lense to be blown out. It is incredibly distracting, and definitely not as engaging.
Re-shooting is not an option. Throwing out the interview is also not an option. Everything else about the shoot was great: the background, audio, lighting (besides the glare issue), responses, framing, etc.
How I can stylize or hide the glare. I understand that I won't be able to get rid of it, but was hoping at least a way to make it "work." I am not an expert with AE. In fact, I really just do color correction/grading and some minor text stuff, and that's it. I sometimes do motion tracking, but have no intention of tracking his eyes for an hour long interview. It would never work anyway, since he's an animated talker.
Using CS6. Shot it flat, indoors, brick wall background. Only issue is I can't darken the blacks too much as there is an iron wood stove to his side that is essential to the interview. If I shift the blacks too far it loses a lot of it's detail and just becomes a blob of nothing.

I do a lot of CNC milling of molds for foundries. Lately I get a lot of models that need cores and they are made without regard to the inside dimensions. Usually I explode them and break them down as far as I can then delete all but the inside surface then reloft the geometry as a solid. More and more models are coming with very intricate cores.
Any easier method of creating the solid core. Attached is a simple model of a simple part. How would the inside hollow area be created as a solid?
