3ds Max :: How To Get Rid Of Viewport Cache Lag
Mar 19, 2011
sometimes in a heavy scene - it seems to depend on the topology/object count, more than on the actual poly count, when you start moving the viewport/camera there is a short lag in the first second. I assume that has something to do with the directx caching. If you know what i am talking about - here is the workaround: freeze everything you dont need right now (and set "frozen grey" to off). for some reason the lag is no more.
When you use the "orbit" button this is not happening - i guess the time you need moving the mouse from the button to the circle does the trick.
A personal comment at the end: i use 3d studio since the release 4 for ms-dos - so i saw it evolving in the past 15 years and used it nearly everyday. since max 8-9 things went worse with every new release .

Problem: When I create a new viewport, another viewport's paperspace blanks out or disappears. When I copy a viewport over, the new VP doesn't show anything and you can't maximize/"enter" its paperspace; it's like a simple rectangle, but the properties box says it is indeed a viewport.
Ex. Viewport 1 shows the top view of an object, Viewport 2 shows the right side view... as soon as I add Viewport 3, the top view in VP 1 blacks out. I attempt to ReDraw, Regenerate, etc, but it doesn't re-appear. I've run Plot Preview to see if maybe it's just a fluke with the graphics card on my screen, but alas, even in plot preview the viewport is blanked out.
It almost seems like there is a limited number of viewports I can use.
Solution: Run the MaxActVP command and set the value to a number greater than the number of VPs you actually need. This particular file had that value set at 2; hence, why a new, third VP blanked out the first one.

I have a drawing with a viewport that fits to the page. And I created another smaller viewport over top that just shows the legend. Now when I try to double click inside the smaller viewport it always goes into the larger one. I have tried bringing the smaller one to the front but that didn't work. I know that I can clip the larger viewport around the smaller one or bring the legend right into paperspace or slid the smaller one off to the side work in it and slide it back. This is more out of curiosity of how to get into the smaller viewport.

I am wanting to insert a second viewport over an existing viewport and have the information in the existing viewport behind the second viewport and not seen. I want the second viewport boundary to be the "trimming" edge of the existing viewport. How do I do this?

I did a test drawing with 4 viewports in paperspace.I frozen a layer in each viewport (as a viewport override, not global), and wrote code to gather info on layer overrides in viewports. The function takes in a database, and is generally used on drawings only open in memory:
public static bool GetLayerInfoFromDB2(Database db) { //do viewports on layoutstry {using (Transaction tr = db. Transaction Manager. Start Transaction()) { ObjectId ldid = db.LayoutDictionaryId;DBDictionary ld = (DBDictionary)tr.GetObject(ldid,
[code]....
the odd thing is it never finds the frozen viewports on the first viewport. It catches the others fine.I cannot see anything odd either, the counts of viewports and layers are all correct, and the drawing has no problems. Is there something that must be done to initialize the mechanism that reads viewport overrides?

I seem to have to be waiting for folders of images to chace their thumbnails that have already gone through the process.
IN other words, they probably have already gone through the 5, 10 97 % thing you wait for and all thumbnails are done

I have the preference set to keep 1:1 cache files for 30 days, and the max cache size is set to 30gb. The cache file has never yet approached this size. I've gone through the trouble of having LR work in the background to create previews for whole collections. After this process, performance is as snappy as I'd expect; images load immediately and there's no more than a one second lag when zooming in to 1:1. But hours or days later, on the same collections, when there has been no change made to the files, everything slows down. The wheels spin as LR loads each image preview, even at reduced fit-to-screen size. Processor utilization zooms to near 100% during these loads, so it seems LR is rendering the views all over again.
What happened to my cached previews?
Running a mac pro, 8 core xeon 2.8ghz, 18gb ram, 3tb 7200rpm data drive that's about 10% full.
The delay happens when in develop mode. In Library mode the pre-made previews are available and load instantly. Is this just the way things are?

When printing I unchecked center image in PScs5 and reduced the size of my image, using the achor in the preview window, to run a test print. I'm printing to an Epson 3880. Once I ran the test print, I returned to PS and my original image. Selected print and only the preview of the test print is there. The orginal sized image will not load in the preview window. I have deleted the PS preferences and restarted twice. Even after moving to another machine, the profile seems to be embedded in my image. The same preview image is on the three machines I moved to.

I'm trying to figure out how many/how big drives/SSD or hard drives I need to get for a quad-core Mac Pro, and am stuck when it comes to the scratch disk.
1) How do I determine how big a scratch disk needs to be in Photoshop CS4 extended (Mac)? I've come across a few sites which explain how to calculate this but they're very technical and hard to grasp IMHO.
2) Where do SSDs come into the equation? Obviously they're still too expensive and small for file storage, but will a SATA-3 SSD (connected to a SATA-3 PCIe card if the onboard SATA-3 interface will be a bottleneck) do wonders as a scratch disk? I've read opinions that go both ways on this. Or are they mostly for use as a system and applications boot drive? And does it make much of a (real world) difference to use a SATA-3 SSD/PCIe interface or just stick with the SATA-II interface already available?
3) Apart from Photoshop, do other applications use a scratch disk as well (Lightroom for instance, which I also use)? It seems a waste to dedicate a hard drive or SSD just for Photoshop alone.

Quick question about Camera Raw Cache: Mine is empty. Always.
I've read that the Develop module stores information on photos it opens in the Camera Raw Cache, while the Library module stores its previews in the LRDATA directory adjacent to the Lightroom Catalog. I've also read that the former can be stored anywhere and is limited to a size specified in Preferences, while the latter must accompany the Catalog file and has no cap on its size.
So why is my Camera Raw Cache always empty? I go in and out of the Develop module, edit, switch among photos within Develop, view images at 1:1 and larger within Develop, etc. Shouldn't that cause cache entries to be generated in the Camera Raw Cache? I've tried moving my Camera Raw Cache from within Preferences, and I have the size of the cache set to 30 GB with plenty of room on the drive, but it's still always empty.

Every now and again and usually after a crash, when I start up AE I get a message saying that the AE media cache folder does not exist. When I check on my drive for that folder, AE is quite right - it is not there. I use a separate SSD for all my media caching and another drive for footage and another as my start up drive. I set AE to use a folder called A:AE Cache. For whatever reason AE is deleting this folder. Other folders on this drive remain as they are. Unless I have a goblin sneaking into my suite on a night deleting this folder or Windows decides to delete this folder all on it's own then it is almost definitely AE that is doing it.

I am running W8 with i5 3350 and a GTX 640 and 20GB of 1600 Mhz RAM (all at default settings). I am using AE CS6 11.0.2.12
I am using a dedicated 256 SSD for my cache drive------i.e. the ONLY thing on that drive is the AE cache information. I have allotted different sizes in the cache preferences, from 140- 220GB (The drive has 240GB free space when formatted).
The problem is, that no mater what the size of the cache that I try, if there is less free space on the drive than what the specified cache size is I will get the error
"your disk cache folder is on a drive that does not have enough available space" when opening After Effects.
( 240GB formatted capacity)
160GB of cache specified in preferences + 100GB of information currently cached on drive = 260GB = The error message upon opening after effects
160GB of cache specified in preferences + 60GB of information currently cached on drive = 220GB = No error message
I do NOT get the error if I make the cache small enough, or delete the cache before opening AE, but that completely destroys the purpose of the cache in the first place.
With that, I have two questions:
1. Is there a fix for this that tells AE to cool its jets a little and recognize that the information on the SSD that is taking up space and making not enough space available is AE's own cache information?
2. If the answer to (1) is no, then is this an error I can just ignore without any major issues?
Right now it seems that this means that I can only make my cache<50% of the total formatted capacity of the drive, which seems a bit over zealous.
