3ds Max :: High To Low Poly Hard Surface Model Conversion

Feb 25, 2013

best way to convert a hard surface high poly model to a low poly model for use in a game engine like Unity. I know this model looks rather low poly already but there internal parts that bring this model up to about 220,000 polys. Is the best solution to remodel as low poly? Would retopo be more effecient? What about using zbrush?

Maya Animation :: Animating Low Poly Instead Of High Poly Model?

Mar 18, 2012

My model is ready for the rigging. But my model is a little heavy in poly-count. I can rig it now but at the time of animation i know it will be a problem while animating it. It will lag while moving its controls. I have seen people animating with low mesh and while rendering they use high mesh. Do, i have to create a low poly version of my model?. If yes, Then i have to paint weight twice. low poly one and the high poly one.

I thought, can i just model in 3D max, with all that details on it, for high poly. And then transfer that high poly model in Maya, and do low poly, uv, texturing, lighting, rendering, composting and Animation too? I am interest in cinematic for game, like trailer for games, which is done from Blur and Blizzard, and BioWare too?

3ds Max Modeling :: High Poly Model - Attaching Objects And Smoothing

Oct 28, 2011

I'm having trouble with a high poly model. It's too big for my system right now to use in a complex scene, so I want to use a MR proxy to instance it. However the model I have(I wasn't the modeler) is composed of a lot of objects, more than I'm willing to make a proxy for. I tried to make a group out of them and make that a proxy but that doesn't seem to be possible (MR proxies can only store 1 object?)

So my next step was to combine them into one object via attach, however when I do that the smoothing gets really screwed up (see attached jpgs). Any tips for keeping smoothing per object as I add them?

3ds Max Modeling :: Scaling Low And High Poly / Viewport Clipping Making Model Disappear

Apr 3, 2011

What i have is a low polymodel that's quite small in scale, i'm modelling around a higher poly model, when i zoom in, the viewport clipping kicks in and parts of the model disappear, so i cant work on the small details. What i need to do is scale up both my low poly and high poly, work on the small details and scale it back down.

In maya there are multiple solutions to this; The first and most obvious would be to increase the near clip in the camera attributes.

The second would be to freeze transformations on the low and high poly, scale up the model, work on it and then scale it back to the value of 1.

The third would be to put both the low and high poly models into a group, scale up the group, work on the model, return the group back to its default size and ungrouping. Personally i would use this method to preserve the original scale values on the low and high poly models.

Is there a way of doing any of the above in 3ds max?

3ds Max :: Using 2011 Graphite Freeform Polydraw Tools To Retopologize A Scanned High Poly Model?

Sep 22, 2011

I'm trying to use 3dsmax 2011 graphite freeform polydraw tools to retopologize a scanned high poly model.

Here are the steps I went through:

1-Imported the high poly mesh (.obj)
2-Converted to editable poly
3-Used ProOptimizer modifier to make the model "lighter" for my pc
4-In the polydraw tools, I selected "Draw On: Surface"
5-"picked" the high poly model
6-Selected offset 0,2
7-Created new object using the polydraw tools "New Object"
8-Froze the high poly model
9-Started retopologizing

The problem is that during the retopology process, my mesh doesn't ''stick'' to the reference high poly model... so I have to stop every now and then to adjust it which takes a lot of time.

I do know that there are a lot more specialized retopo tools like Topogun and 3Dcoat, but acquiring a new tool is not an option at the moment.

AutoCAD Inventor :: Convert Surface To Solid Model / Turn Off Yellow Edges In Surface Model

Mar 4, 2008

We received a surface model from a vendor that I have patched up as best I can, it still has one hole that I can find that I haven't been able to fill. Ideally we would like to have a solid model, but I'm running out of time to get this done and the surface model we have would be good enough for our purposes IF I can get the yellow surface tangent lines to turn off or change their color to black.

I've attached a jpg of the surface model with the yellow lines and uploaded the model here: [URL].....

3ds Max Modeling :: Clean Up High Poly Mesh

Dec 16, 2013

I was modeling a unicorn in ZBrush (because it's so comfortable and intuitive with modeling) for a film in a project of my studies and imported it to 3ds Max then, because I know how to rig and animate there (and in ZBrush I didn't even find out how to MOVE an object).

After a while I finally killed all the triangles in my mesh, but it's just... horrible. So many polys where they aren't needed, so unclean. It looks like this:

And I'd rather want it to be clean like that:

Mudbox :: Multi-tile UV And High Poly Count

Jul 26, 2012

I've been trying out making an alien character in mudbox.

When I have textured a multi tile uv layout for the character and saved, I come back the next day to work on the file and the UV's look like the attached file - the image for uv 0,2 is the same as for 0,1 and 0,3, the tiling worked fine while I was painting though. Is this a bug or is it something I'm doing/incorrect setup/etc. I'm using the standard install with its default settings.

I would like to have a model with a high poly count to work on, my model is 2mil polys at the moment, if I try to divide to 8 mil the app really slows down, Is there a way to get mudbox to handle more polys smoothly, I'm running 64bit Mudbox 2013 with 6gig of RAM and a 1Gig video card (ATI Radeon HD 5700). In an ideal world I'd like to go to 32 mil polys to take advantage of the 4k maps I'll be outputting - am I aiming too high with this spec? I'd like to get some nice close ups of this char and render out at 1080p if possible

I have no problems in drawing the whole thing, but exporting to .pdf and even to .DWF is problematic.

3ds Max :: NURBS Surface Converted To Editable Poly

Jul 10, 2012

I found to model a joystick. I have created a spline mesh, and applied a Surface modifier. The next step is to convert it to an Editable Poly. Fine, no sweat there. The thing is, when i do that, Max creates a ton more vertices; so many that its blatant over kill. My Surface mesh contains only 214 verts, but after conversion, i have over 6000.

Im guessing its adding some kind of smoothing somewhere...? After conversion, the tutorial has no more verts than it did before conversion, and it looks pretty much the same.

Conversion does not add extra vertices?

AutoCad 3D :: Surface To Solid Conversion

Aug 23, 2011

I have asked to amend a drawing, which consists of lots of square tube sections and other stuff, however I have received it in IGS format. I have got it to open in AutoCAD by first opening it in Inventor, then using the 'Save Copy As' command to save it as a DWG. However, instead of it consisting of solid tubes which I assumed it would be for me to easily amend, it's all surfaces.

I can't find a way of opening it as a solid model (maybe the file type doesn't allow it anyway), nor can I seem to convert any of the surfaces into a solid.

I have attached a sample tube from the drawing, how to turn it into a solid? I am moderately experienced at solid modelling from scratch, but I've never come across something like this before.

AutoCAD Inventor :: Convert Surface Model Into Solid Model?

My problem today is that I made a Model of a Part of a ship using surfaces rather than solids because the engineer thought it would be easier to bring into ANSYS program for analysis but he is now having a problem with it and I am looking into converting my current model to solid. I can do it but the method I thought of using is quite long winded and we are working to a tight deadline.

1.open up the surface part

2.use "Offset/Thicken"

3.any clashes between parts make a sketch and cut away.

the problem is the amount of plates I have and the time it takes to sort them out.

AutoCad 3D :: Surface Model Mapping

Jan 17, 2013

I am having some mapping difficulties with regards to applying a JPEG as a material map onto a surface material. Below are the details.

I have a surface model which was generated from topographical information. I have aerial photography of the area the topographical information is based on. The photography covers approximately 1000m2 area.

The topography area in contained within this area, it is in the upper right hand corner of the square photo. I have applied planar mapping to the surface . I resized the mapping area of the surface to suit the area that the photo covers (I created a boundary rectangle and adjusted the mapping size to suit). I created a customer material using the jpeg photo I applied it to the surface . The image scale is set to 1000 . All other settings remain as default settings.

The mapping displays over my model, but its on the wrong location, i.e. information contained within the jpeg that is out with the topographical area is appearing on the model. When I turn off tiling the mapping disappears from my model completely. I have read a few tutorials today and went back to basics on a few trials by creating blocks and applying the material and scaling it that way. All behave as anticipated. Apart from this.

AutoCAD Civil 3D :: MEP Building Model On Surface

Oct 31, 2013

I am attempting to x-ref a building model that was drawn in 2013 MEP in a Civil3D drawing that contains the site surface. When I x-ref my building model into the site drawing and attempt to align and scale the building some of my walls become broken and missing. I have a feeling this is a scaling issue because on my site my north wall should be 24' long. The wall is 24' long in MEP, but that same 24' from Civil3D is only a 2' line segment in MEP. How to remedy this? I have tried scale the building model down in MEP first and it causes all kinds of problems with the door and window objects. I tried adjusting the x-ref scale prior to adding the x-ref and it does the same thing.

3ds Max Modeling :: How To Model A Box Like Shape With Ripples Over Its Surface

Jun 21, 2012

I'm trying to model a box like shape with ripples over it's surface. The box can have rounded corners and edges. The ripples need to flow over the 6 faces of the box. I want 2 or 3 sets of ripples, originating in different places, interacting with each other.

My modelling skills in Max are not great. I generally use Inventor for modelling and Max for lighting, materials, animation and rendering. I've followed loads of tutorials on ways of doing this, but haven't quite managed it yet.

My latest attempt has been to use the patchdeform tool. What I've done is

1) modelling a plane, with many segments
2) applied the ripple modifier to the plane
3) created a box with smoothed edges/corners
4) converted the box to a patch
5) tried to patchdeform the plane to the box - get 'illegal patch' error

The above work with a sphere rather than a box. I'm not convinced this is the best way to achieve what I want.

AutoCad 3D :: Creating Street Surface Model?

May 25, 2012

I am trying to create a model of a city street surface using Autocad 2013. I think that perhaps the "network" surface command might work. Although the surface of a street looks simple, it is quite complex because of the need to drain the street of water. The corners are particularly difficult because the surface needs to be a continuous smooth curve while at the same time changing the direction of the surface slant.

I have attached a jpg of a model I created in Maya. I can export this to Autocad, but it is not particularly accurate and I need to create the model in Autocad at my job where they do not use Maya.
