I would like to add different materials in Family type window (value column drop down). How to attain this?

I modified a Window Family file by adding a Window inset parameter. When I inserted the window into a wall, otherwise the window worked fine, but when I changed the window's Window Inset value, the frame depth changed instead of the frame's location. The frame was originally made by Sweep tool, but now when I made it by Extrusion tool, the window works fine. Anyway, for future purposes, I would like to know how to be able to use the Window Inset parameter with a frame made by Sweep tool. How do I lock the depth of the frame sweep?

I have several window types in my project. Let's say that the window is 3'-0" wide by 4'-8" high - Mark #1. I want to group three of these windows and schedule the group as Mark #2 - not three separate #1 windows. How do I set up the three windows together to become a single window schedulable for the entire opening of the three windows grouped together so that the opening would read 9'-0" wide?

View 3 Replies View RelatedI'm going through a tutorial on families (Paul Aubin) and have created a shelf w/ nested brackets that works as expected when flexed in the family editor. Any project I load it into shows it at its default configuration, but when I select it in the project and change it's type in the properties box, the configuration does not flex - it stays as inserted. It also shows my parameters in the properties box as individually modifiable.

Either A or B can be picked through a "Family Type" parameter. Family C is locked to a reference plane, which is defined by a dimensional parameter called "Offset." Is there a way to have the value of "Offset" change based on whether A or B is loaded? Not sure how to use the "Family Type" dorp-down parameter in/with a formula to do so.
I understand how to change material by family type but how can I change object subcategory by family type? Is this possible?

View 9 Replies View RelatedI am creating a family for a mobile shelf assembly. While an obvious way to create it would be to use an array, because the client needs to be able to tag each shelf unit separately, that can't be done. The client does, however, have a limit of 10 banks maximum, so I've created ten banks in hte family that are controlled by visibility parameters.
Each of the banks can be a different type of shelf (the shelf units are nested families) but they are always of the same overall length and width in any one run.
Here's my problem, Everything flexes correctly as long as the depth of the units stays the same as they were when the family type parameters were assigned to the shelf families as labels. When you try to create a new Type using a wider shelf unit, you get errors.
Without the Family Type parameters assigned as labels, all of the reference planes meant to drive the location of the shelves flex correctly.
I'm using Revit 2013.
I've been doing some family as an independent construction detail revit model, I think that is the most appropriate type of detail component. Graphically everything right but I encounter the following problem, all built to type text is not visible in the project then.
How do you control the display? or do you like I can put a text in a detail component family? and if not visible... why would have the option of make texts? Is the only option to annotate after in the project insertion?
I recently built a model-in-place generic model ceiling canopy using Revit 2013. I want to place lights (recessed cans) in the model. Can I change the model type to ceiling or is there a way to place light fixtures in it?
View 2 Replies View RelatedI wish to create a formula for a family parameter which itself references a 'Type' of an imported family. Specifically I wish to create a quoin stack which can be used for a 'reveal' situation either side of a door or window rather than just on a corner. A 'quoin stack,' as that which comes with the revit content files, typically is made up of two vertical arrays which intersect giving alternative long and short sides. Each of the arrays is made up of a different quoin type, a 'Short' and a 'Long' type which swap dimensions from from perpendicular face to the other. This of course is no good for a reveal situation where on the window or door reveal of both interleived courses needs to be the same, whilst maintaining the 'long/short' appearance on the wall face containing the window or door.
I have got so far as to create a 'reveal depth' parameter within the quoin stack family but need to find a way of addressing the 'Long' quoin type to change its 'short' dimension to suit the reveal depth whilst changing the 'long' dimension of the 'Short' quoin type to be the same.
I would like to cut a void into the wall of a host window family. When I place a void in the family, it does not cut thought the wall.
I tried making the void on a plane perpendicular and parallel to the wall plane. I dont know if this has anything to do with how voids work. But its not working. I also dont have an 'opening' element in the window family.
I am semi-new to Revit and am trying to make a go of it. I am trying to make a window, that looks like my AutoCAD window. So I open the Window Family.rft to start creating. I can adjust my wall thickness to match my brick wall, I can set the frame to the void that is already there.....my problem comes when I want to put on the brick mould. This overhangs the window frame and thus is outside the pre-ordained void. When I try to make a void extrusion to cut back the outside face of the wall and allow the brick mould to show, it will not work - only the originally supplied void (that comes with the template) works.
Revit will not allow me to "Cut Geometry" saying "A Family cannot have an opening and cut in the same host". If I set the brick mould inside the supplied opening, then the inside face will have a gap between the drywall and the window frame.
I am using Revit Architecture 2013 and am trying to create a window family that has different grid options built into the family. I have included a copy of one of my window families I am working on and an image for an examples of what happens when I load all my windows into a project and place them. Some of the grid families do not automatically adjust to the size it should be. But if I click on the window (lets say it as no grids) and then select the no grid parameter again then it will adjust. How I can get these windows to adjust automatically so I don't need to do an extra step to make them look right!?

I am trying to take a custom counter I created as a family and have it show a material in my project. It seems that no matter how I apply the material parameter to the family type object, type or instanced, the material does not change in the project when I apply any new material. I have opened up other countertops I have used from the Revit Default Casework Family and I can't seem to find a difference in the setup between mine and Revit. I wanted to use an instanced parameter so I can change the material per room where the object is used.
View 5 Replies View RelatedI am working on my first real Revit project. i need to modify a windows family and in particular i want to change the axis of insertion of the window in the wall. I mean... my window should be placed on the outer edge of my wall. i try to unlock the dimensions that define its position and then i lock the dimension in the new position; the window seems to be ok but only in the RFA file. When i imported it in my project file, the windows moves in the wrong way in my real wall.

View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to align a nested family to a reference line in my host family so that it rotates around a certain point.
I've created the reference line in my host family, locked the end point to two reference planes and then gave an angular parameter to the angle between the ref. line and the ref. plane.
I then inserted the nested family and aligned it to the ref. line. The problem is that when I flex the angle, i get a "Constraints not satisfied" error..
What could be wrong?
I'm using a generic face based family for both host and nested families...

After I create a window, and I go to the materials editor and assign a multi/sub-object material to it, I get the 10 slots as expected but there are no materials assigned to any of the slots.
When I watch tutorials, it seems like everybody else is getting the 5 sub-materials that correspond to each part of the window (glass, frame, etc.).
I recently downloaded Revit 2013, and when I try to add materials, Revit crashes immediately.

Even starting a new project the load family dialog box does not appear. I have done: 1) system restore, 2 ) repaired install, 3 ) re-installed, 4) uninstalled and reinstalled from scratch but still the problems persists on this machine. all other office PC’s with Revit 2013 behave.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI've attached a simple RVT file with a family inserted and the front view active. I need to rotate the family 90 degrees but Revit reports the following error:
"Can't draw because Work Plane is at a very sharp angle in this view. Go to another view or redefine the Work Plane."
Is there a way to load, for example, a wall created in a different project, into another project?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI downloaded a grab bar family that I thought looked very good. But then I tried to place it on the toilet stall portion (I also downloaded stall partition families). When I tried to place the grab bar, it wouldn't place -- I believe because the grab bar is WALL BASED.
So now the question is how do I go about placing a grab bar (or anything else) that is not wall based so that I can use it with the stall portion? I had tried to use face based but couldn't get that too work.

Recently, My revit does not load families. The process I use is the following:
In the Build area of the home ribbon, I select the Component button. I going to the Place component ribbon. When I select Load Family form the Mode portion of the ribbon, the properties box pops up. It is locked at this point and I cannot do anything but hit escape. The program functions just fine in all other aspects. I have used a vanilla project to see if the project I am working on is corrupted and I get the same results.
I am trying to create a custom planter based off some line work that I did in my project. It has a curve. basically what I have done is created the line work on plan but now I want to use that curved line to create my family. which I am thinking I can create a profile and then sweep it on those lines. The problem is I can get the line work to the family.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to edit the keynote family with no luck. We are updating our standards and getting into using the keynote system in revit. I have added the correct keynote to most of our standard materials and its working great. I then opened the keynote family and changed the justification of the text to justify the way we do notes. I also changed the line style of the leader lines so it matches our other notes.
All went well. I get stuck when I try to change the gap between the leader tail and the text. I can't find anywhere to actually edit the line/arrow in the family that would let me change how that works. If you see my attached image the one on the top is our standard note and the other two are the keynote family.
How to set / change that gap?
