Photoshop :: Making Family Tree/mosaic
Jul 17, 2006
I'm having trouble with many newbie things... here's the list:
1) i have to deal with images of various sizes. What do I need to do to be able to have everyone's head cut out in an exact circle such that I can move them all around and they are the same size? I tried using the marquee tool but it made a different circle each time, more of an ellipse (hence the name of the tool I suppose).
2) does anyone know where I can get a picture of a tree that I can attach everyone's head to? how do I use that as my background? is that the same as adding a layer and having it as the bottom layer?

Is there a way of getting a family tree of all the parts and sub-assemblies of a main assembly?
I would like this so I can keep track on what parts need drawings (manufactured parts) and if the drawing has been done.

I need to make a selection of this tree:
so that it looks like this:
and its proven to be very difficult. My tree looks pretty terrible, and it's definitely not as clean as the tree in the poster. I'm using the quick selection tool.

I was wondering how do they do that cool mosaic effect.
I seen a TIME Magazine(few years ago) create a cover using many smaller images of its previous covers.
Is it done manually, or is there a plugin?

Recently my friend made a huge mosaic image composed of 8.6 x 11 in. paper but he would not tell me how he did it in photoshop... My question is how do you get photoshop to print out just individual sections of a picture to make up a big picture in the end?

I'm trying to align a nested family to a reference line in my host family so that it rotates around a certain point.
I've created the reference line in my host family, locked the end point to two reference planes and then gave an angular parameter to the angle between the ref. line and the ref. plane.
I then inserted the nested family and aligned it to the ref. line. The problem is that when I flex the angle, i get a "Constraints not satisfied" error..
What could be wrong?
I'm using a generic face based family for both host and nested families...

I'm doing a rebrand for a university, and as they've got limited creative resource themselves we've decided to build in using pixelated images into the brand guidelines (so they won't require a professional photographer for every bit of execution).
What I'd like to do is use their logo (a simple house shape) as the shape of the mosaic filter. I've been unable to find a way of altering photoshops default square mosaic filter shape.

I am trying to design a shower mosaic, using small (3/4") tiles. I have a certain color palette, dictated by where I buy the tiles
And convert it to a mosaic that only uses colors from the tiles. I could then play with tiles of different sizes or a bigger/smaller palette until I was happy with it, and use the Photoshop image as the pattern when I put them in.
I know how to create a mosaic with squares of size x. What I don't know is how to tell Photoshop to take an image and create a mosaic forcing it (as best as it can) into a specified color palette.

I have this idea to place a raster image from Photoshop into Illustrator, and to have an array of Illustrator shapes over this placed image, to clipping mask the raster image with the shapes, and then to move the shapes individually, each one retaining it's section of that raster image which it clipped.
I believe I'm getting the clipping part to happen, but when I move the shapes with the Direct Selection tool, the clipped contents doesn't move with it.
I think that all of my shapes, taken as a whole are clipping this raster image...am I barkin' up the wrong tree here?

I'm producing a limited 8-colour palette mosaic for a restaurant wall using 1734 tiles represented as tessellated objects superimposed on a colour-reduced photo. Each tile will be one of 8 colours.
My question: how do I calculate the number of tiles per colour? I already have produced the tiles with their respective colour.
there is the scripting language - which is likely my only option - but as I'm new to the game:-
1. Is there an inbuilt Draw function to identify and count the number of objects with a specific colour, or
2. How can illustrate some Corel Script I can get started with to achieve this?

So I am trying to take an image of a tree trunk (or a school desk, or a wooden door) and "carve" a heart with some people's names into it and make it look somewhat realistic, as if they carved their names into it themselves.
I am not completely new to photoshop, I can find my way around and have edited several other projects. I am, however, completely stumped on how to do this one. Please help! Let me know if you need any more info.

I have this photo of a tree in the forground, with a house behind it. I want to remove the house from the photo, would it be easier to select the tree and put it on a different layer or select the house and remove it. ? What is the best way to select a tree like this? I have read that the pen tool is not the correct way to select trees and leaves.

since you photoshop gurus have been so nice in welcoming me into the community, i thought i's give a little something that could be useful to you in the near future. direct from my camera is a few of tree bark photos that can be used as textures i can happily post up here for you lot to use as resouces
ON ONE (OPTIONAL) CONDITION:
you post the work you used it in up here, i'm always happy to see my resources put to use, and it saves me the the time looking for where they were used, so it would be nice, however you don't have to
second one is blurred a little bah! still useable. more textures soon.

1. I'm not very satisfied with the snow in the trees, i've tried many filters and finally used "replace color" on the greenish parts of the trees with luminosity at 100%. I've compared with real snow covered trees and they are completely white, i guess that i should somehow "paint" them but i don't know a lot about how to achieve a realistic snow effect with the brushes (without degrading too much the original trees either...)
2. The icy sea is taken from another photo i found on the web (probably antarctica). It seemed to blend nicely when i was working on the retouching but when i opened the project 2 days later i thought that the colors of the two photos didn't blend *that* nicely Is there a "scientific" way to harmonize the colors of two photos, so that they can fit well together? (i'm prepared to hear that there's no recipe for that!)
(seemed to me that the blending of colors is top priority but perhaps something else is jumping even more at your eyes).

PS CS6 and Win7/64...We just finished shooting a 3 day conference for 600 people, that involved many break-out sessions. Our folder tree of all the finished TIFFs is organized by day, then by topic, and then by break out. All in all there are 75 folders in the tree, with close to 700 TIFFs.
The client wants both hi-res and lo-res JPGs (not the TIFFs).I have a very simple droplet that will convert a TIFF to JPG, but works only on a given folder, and outputs to a generic folder (so I have to copy these back).
Is there a way to create a droplet that will
(a) walk the source tree and convert the TIFFs of each folder to JPG, as well as
(b) Have PS create a matching tree to deposit the JPGs into the corresponding folders?
I know there's an option to include all folders when doing the conversion, but (b) is the critical element so I don't have to do this in a folder-by-folder basis.

I can't take a good photo, but the Mother-in-Law is quite an avid photographer. She went on holiday recently to Tsitsikamma, & Kruger Park, both here in SA. I asked if she would take some photo's for me I could use as textures and/or backdrops. Last night I got my photo's
This one I just clipped from an image of a really old tree. Played around with it, and I mean played as I'm certainly no expert. This is the result Very Necronomicon looking. It just shows, sometimes you get more than you expected on a photo. I will certainly be playing with this some more.
