Photoshop :: Ignores Metadata On A Nikon Raw Image?
Feb 25, 2012
Seems that Photoshop ignores metadata on a Nikon raw image if the Metadata is written on the camera and not in PS. The powers to be suggest is that you duplicate the effort by writting this metadata in PS. Have a problem with that as why duplicate the work/effort if it is already written on the camera at the time the image is taken. Specifically on my camera I have th eimage comment field as 'Image taken by my name'. When I view a Nikon raw iamge via PS I don't see this field as well as approx 8 other metadata fields/categories. If I use teh Nikon viewing software IViewNX) I see all the metadata. Heres the kicker - if I save the raw image under PS it (PS) will remove all the metadata it doesn't see or know about.Â

Looks like X6 carries over a X5 bug for bitmap import. When importing bitmaps it ignores the dpi metadata and assumes 72 dpi so bitmaps do not retain their correct dimensions. To properly scale a 300 dpi image, for instance, I need to select it and scale it to 72/300*100.

I am trying to create a simple three image panorama. I shot the images (an interior) using a shift lens, this has always worked very easily in CS5.
Â
in Bridge I go to the Photoshop photo merge feature, select the three files - it opens up one of the files creates the photo merge layer but ignores the other two files. I have tried many different configurations, making sure all three files are highlighted in blue, auto and perspective always the same outcome one image plus an empty photo merge layer.
Â
I've read through the archives that seem to address hdr - I've repaired my permissions using disk utility do I need to throw away my Photoshop permissions and if so how do I do that again? (mac 2008 tower 10.6.8)Â .

My camera creates files like IMG_3456.CR2 and MVI_3457.AVI. I want to find all the files that have a pattern like "_345" in the name but when I search with Find>By Filename in PSE 11/Win the underscore is ignored. Why? How do I limit the search to just these files?
Â
I want to find names like this because they do not necessarily appear near one another when sorted by date because PSE sorts the CR2 files by the date shot but the AVI files have some other date, perhaps when I copied the file off my flash card.

I'm transcribing some of the metadata from image files to build a simple catalog. Included are things like dimensions, resolution, and photo date. Is there a way to extract this data other than manually?

I initially had the issue with Photoshop CS5 not being able to recognize RAW files from my Nikon D800. I managed to sort-it-out by installing the RAW Plug in 6.7 hence now CS5 opens up the RAW files from D800.
Â
However, now I'm faced with the different issue. I see a significant drop of image quality when RAW s are opened in CS5. The images looking stunning with in D800 display screen looks very dull and flat when opened in CS5. No where close to the brilliant colors shown in the D800 preview.

My setup is a Mac Pro with GTX 680 card for mac.I bought this card, thinking it would do what Adobe advertised: "GPU Rendering - Work faster and take full advantage of your hardware with full GPU acceleration, now included in Adobe Media Encoder."
Â
I want to transcode FullHD H264 to XDCAM HD. GPU acceleration isn't happening. The GPU is idle, while the CPU does all the work. Sure, it I want do de-interlace or downscale to an SD Format, the GPU works. But apparently not for transcoding.
Â
Adobe should not suggest that AME can take full advantage of my hardware, because it can't.

I'm really struggling with exporting a surface to XML.
I made a surface in which I paste all relevant corridor surfaces for the subarea of the project.
The surface looks OK in the file, but when I export, the XML file ignores my few edits, and adds excessive triangulation between adjacent corridors.
I already tried with adding boundaries, creating snapshots, exporting to XML 1.0 1.1 1.2, and regardless of what software I use the resulting XML, it looks crap, and the drainage team is struggling to work with it.
==== i7 @3.4GHz ==== 8GB @666MHz ==== ATI/AMD @675MHz ==== win7 x64 ====

I have several surfaces pasted to make a composite surface, and a poly line is added as a none destructive boundary.
The surface looks fine on the screen, but when it is exported to LandXML the boundary is ignored, This creates a 120MB XML file, which will not load into Windes for Drainage work.
I can trim the breaklines defining each surfaces, but there is 8 models and 8 different areas to trim in this manor. This would take far too long and would also create 64 surfaces!!!

I have a user who is disabled. He can only use a mouse and cannot use a keyboard. For keyboard inputs, he uses the On-Screen Keyboard built-in to Windows 7. He has used many versions of Autodesk Inventor... since 2010.
Normally, the On-Screen Keyboard will always "stay on top" of all other programs and windows. With Inventor 2012, the On-Screen Keyboard disappears when you press certain buttons in Inventor. In my screencast, the On-Screen Keyboard disappears when you complete an Extrude function and also when you Fillet. I've also seen it disappear when during a Chamfer, but this is not in the screencast.
This is extremely annoying for a user who can only use a mouse, as he has to constantly bring back the On-Screen Keyboard by click on the taskbar icon. It's also inconsistent with what Autodesk did in the past with previous versions of Inventor.
This is a screencast of Inventor 2012 w/ SP1 and demonstrates the disappearing On-Screen Keyboard [URL]

I have been wondering why my backups (differential) weregetting larger than they should, and I noticed that some of the files (.psd and .jpg, and mayde few .tiff) were modified. Interestingly, I do not see this happening to cr2-files, that I mostly use. After trying to figure out what's going on I noticed that corresponding xmp-files were modified also. This is not the issue due to their small size, but still I had not edited images that were changed for quite a while.
Â
Change that I see in xmp-files is rather large, and presumably related to Adobe's change in xmp-data structure. Eg.
Â
<x:xmpmeta xmlns:x="adobe:ns:meta/" x:xmptk="Adobe XMP Core 5.3-c007 1.136881, 2010/06/10-18:11:35Â Â Â "><x:xmpmeta xmlns:x="adobe:ns:meta/" x:xmptk="Adobe XMP Core 4.2-c020 1.124078, Tue Sep 11 2007 23:21:40Â Â Â ">Â
In addition to the sample above, whole xmp structure is changed. So I presume that maybe LR is writing metadata chages to xmp in the background?
Â
What I find disturbing is that when checking changed jpg files, I saw the similar data written into the jpg files also (files were created with oldish Canon 20D, and not edited for quite a while). These are examples from changed jpg-files (not the same from which the abone xmp-data change was taken, but similar change is visible in the corresponding XMP):
Â
Also jpg-file from offset 0x04 was changed from "50 60" to "51 18". Also offset 0x10 was changed (16 bits). I have Lightroom configuration option "Include develope settings in Metadata Inside JPEG, TIFF and PSD Files" not selected. The option "Automatically write changes to XMP" is selected. To my understanding neither of these should not have impact to the issue. Is there something else I should check?
Â
Change is made most likely by Lightroom 3.5 version, and has not occurred with previous versions. I have not notices this happening with 3.6, but I have been using it only few weeks. Is this known issue with previous version 3.5, or am I missing something obvious? System running is Windows 7 pro 64bit. I have not have any issues with LR lately, except crashes that I white about a week ago.

Would it be possible to automatically set the name of the folder in the "put in subfolder" export option, based on that image metadata (or on a preset, as it is, for example, for filenames)? Maybe a plugin? - image in "summer 2013" gets exported in "summer 2013 jpg" subfolder, where "summer 2013" is taken from the "folder" metadata and "jpg" either from the filetype or manually added.

Environment: Lightroom 4.1, Windows 7, JPG and RAW images
Â
We often work remotely on a laptop, then come back to the studio and transfer images from a shoot to the main PC for further work. Some adjustments in Lightroom were done to some images in the folder already, as well as rating some of the best images. Â
Â
It seems the recommended way of copying images from a laptop to the main PC is to use the "Export as Catalog" function with the "Export negative files" option turned on. However, when working with hundreds of files, this process takes a very long time, and also duplicates the images on the same laptop in the export location. This doesn't work well when working with 50GB of files, especially when only a few of them have any Lightroom adjustments anyways.Â
Â
Is there a way to just copy the entire directory structure over to the main PC (copying files is fairly quick over Gigabit Ethernet), and then export only the metadata for the files (or catalog) over to the main PC so I can keep the adjustments?
Â
In other words, instead of having to do this:
1. Export as Catalog
2. Wait a very long time for the laptop to duplicate all the images and export files
3. Re-import this catalog to my Main catalog
4. Wait a very long time for this to happen
Â
It would be WAY faster to just do this:
1. Copy entire folder structure from laptop to main PC (this is quick)
2. Export metadata from these files only
3. Import metadata to new PC

I'm running version 2.8.2 of GIMP on Kubuntu 12.10. I do not remember which version I was running before this one, but it was possible to press ALT + ENTER to open a properties dialog where one could enter / modify a description for the opened image. ALT + ENTER does nothing in this new version, but I think that I should enter the File -> Properties dialog to do this, right? The dialog is different and it is in a different menu now, but it seems here is where we should enter / edit image metadata. However, nothing that I fill in this dialog is saved. I enter the title, author, description, etc., but when I click OK the info is discarded without warning. If I go back to the File -> Properties dialog right after confirming the data I had just entered, the dialog is blank again. Is this a bug or am I looking for the enter / edit metadata functionality in the wrong place?

I would like to embed long text strings to image metadata, in order to copy and paste memories written and related to these images. As an example, I'm keeping a sailing logbook and I would like to add the daily entries to pictures but I have run into problems when sharing images elsewhere. The string length exceeds the metadata standard lengths.
Â
Which standard metadata fields allow longest text strings that I could use for my logbook entries without the fear of losing them when exporting or sharing them elsewhere?

I am attempting to execute a set of actions containing two "Save" commands. The first works fine while the second does not. (The destination folder is ignored and the file is saved in the same folder as the first Save.) The only difference I can see is that the second "Save" is modal and the other is not. The fact that the destination folder is contained in the action makes me think this ought to work and I'm missing something obvious.
I have a JPG of the action set but I can't see how to attach it....

I love tethered Shooting but as default (at least for Nikon) Lightroom does only save the file on the computer, not on the memory card.
Â
Now I want to have a backup of the image file on the memory card additionally to downloading it. The tethering software digiCamControl can do this with my camera, so it is technically possible.
Â
So how can I achieve this using Lightroom tethering?

Is there a way I can set PS to autosave some preset metadata every time I create a new drawing or update some photo or photoart? I want it so save into the file somewhere, my name as the creator. I am trying to do this will all my programs that allow me to save a file that I create. This way if I ever need to back up all my personal files again I can search for all files that have me as the Creator or Author and back them up all at once. My intention is always to set up folders such as My Photos, My Art, My Word Docs, My Excel, etc... and save every media I create in these and I can never seem to keep up with this and my files end up everywhere. The my Hard Drive fills up or I want to clean my PC and finding all my files is a challenge and time consuming.

I completely lost trace of an image I'm using on a Photoshop document. I'm using only a portion of the full image and I need the rest of it for another panel...
It was downloaded from the Web, I've already tried the google reverse image search without any results (it's now cropped/resized/renamed) and i carefully went through my Firefox history... somehow, it just disappeared! Is there a way to use photoshop (or maybe Bridge?) to find the data related to my source image (just the name would do it).

I have read that adding keywords to the metadata helps you find a photo you are looking for from a large library of images. My questions is...
can you add keywords to you photos to help search spiders to find them and display them on search results?

I'm wondering if there is a way to add metadata to an image (particularly JPEGs) without involving a re-save of the image itself. Obviously not a problem with TIFF but not great if every time you want to add more keywords your JPEG gets re-saved.
