Photoshop :: Combining Selections Tools Pen + Mask

I am trying to make a difficult selections of this team. they are on a white background (with a few shadows). Please excuse the watermark, but I promised the photographer I would use it. I used the magnetic lasso for this selection.

I tried to make a mask using Deke's example from lynda.com. Using levels and painting with white and black in overlay mode. That worked pretty good for the hair, but not so good for the rest.

I would like to use the pen tool for the bodies and the other way (not sure of the name) to use the hair.
