Photoshop :: Color Seperation
Sep 18, 2005
I'm Having problems with seperating the color chanels in PS7 on a grey scale image.
I have 3 pcitures and want to extract 1 color chanel from each and then combine them. Here's a section a an email I have describing the the procedure. However, I'm still at a loss.
When using Photoshop, there are two methods of controlling the color
level in a frame as I remember, and one of them will result in improper
color balance.
When you independently adjust the color level, one of the methods (and I
don't remember which) will leave a frame that ranges from black to white
with the pure color as the only tint. This is the wrong method, as a pure
color frame cannot possibly have white in it. The method you want will run
from pure black to pure color (such as green) with no gray or white
whatsoever. You can test the method by looking at the RGB frames
individually. If you are trying to get a red frame but the RGB
decomposition reveals any green or blue information at all, then it is
incorrect. The green and blue frames in a pure red image should have a
completely black image.
Now, when you have your pure red, green, and blue image data, to
assemble them you know that each must contribute 1/3 to the image. If you
assemble two frames at a time, the first two must use 50% transparency so
each contributes equally. The next assembly must use 67% transparency so
that the first two frames account for 2/3 of the image data, the next
accounts for 1/3. As you can see, the order of assembly here will have no
effect on the process. That proves that the process is as it should be.
Once the frames are together, the overall image will be about 1/3 as
bright as it should, so the brightness and contrast must be increased by
roughly 2/3. Compare them to a straight assembly of the calibration target
to see how it should look.

Is there a way to apply a color to selected objects without having to search for the color in the color palette. So say if I am working with an image that has multiple colors but want to use only one of the colors in that image, is there a way to apply it without having to create or add it to the palette.

I'm about 3 months and many hours of tutorials into Premiere ProCC, Audition CC, and Encore CS6. Apparently the nifty dynamic links from PPro and Audition CS6 no longer work with encore, as encore was not upgraded to CC. So,
I want to sample color from an original Photoshop image, and create an Encore menu color set, so that my menu buttons, etc. are colored to match the main photo image in the menu. Is there an eyedropper kind of tool in Encore that would let me sample the color from the image, and then apply that to color swatches in the Encore button layers?

I have a PSD file open and I added a new layer via the copy command. I have added a Layer Mask to the new layer and I'm trying to use the Brush Tool with black forground to cover part of the new layer. I'm following an online tutorial step by step, but when I try to use the Brush Tool I get "could not use color replacement tool because it only works in full color mode". The Image>Mode is set to RGB.

--Toolbox: The 2 columns of Tools on the left side of the Editor screen.
--Foreground Color & Background Color: The color filled squares at the bottom of the Toolbox.
--Color dialogue box: This is the pop-up that is labeled at the top with "Color". It shows 48 different color squares (6 rows by 8 columns); they are labeled "Basic colors:". Right below the "Basic colors:" array is another 16 empty squares (2 rows by 8 columns) to be filled with colors to be defined. There is a "Define Custom Colors>>" button when clicked opens up a color picker with HSB RGB stacked below the color field screen. See this link to the Microsoft "Color Dialogue Box", [URL]
--Adobe Color Picker: The interactive dialogue box with the color field screen to the left and the HSB RGB numbers stacked on the right side.

The problem:In PSE 10, when using the Eyedropper Tool or clicking on the Foreground Color or the Background Color, the Microsoft Microsoft "Color Dialogue Box" pops up instead of the "Adobe Color Picker" dialogue box. This started about a month ago. I use Windows 7.
I want the "Adobe Color Picker" to pop up (like it used to) inside PSE 10.

I have a photo of a painting that was taken with Kodak color checker patches on one corner. It looks like I need to adjust the colors in Photoshop.
I want to use the color checker as a reference to correct the overall image color and contrast. However, I don't know how to use it as I have never worked with color checker patches before.
how to color correct the image on photoshop?
I am attaching a cropped sample image. The original image is in RGB. The colors on the Kodak patch as follows: Blue, Cyan, Gree, Yellow, Red, Magenta, White, 3/Color, Black.

To create a special effect (but not TOO garish!) I'd like to change this brownish meadow so that it looks much more like one of the swatches from my color swatches panel.
Do I need to create a new adjustment layer, or are there other approaches? Below is a screen shot.

I have alot of paper that I want to reduce & eliminate, I have a bunch of certificates, magazine/newspaper clippings that I have from high school & college to scan & would like to know what color settings would be best.
I also have a bunch of brochures, other odd papers, receipts, & handwritten notes.
I am using an Epson perfection photo 4490 flatbed scanner, on a mac running lion 10.7.5.
I would also like to know what would be the best resolution to use.
I read a little about bit depth, & from what I gather, the human eye can only see so many colors, & going with bigger color depths is good where one has to do alot of editing.
most of these items are for records & archives, & maybe to be able to print from the scans, so I can throw out some of my paper. Also, when I scan in Adobe RGB, would it be best to use 48 bit depth to go with the fuller color? & when I use sRGB use 24 bit depth?

I'm assuming this problem I'm having stems from having color-calibrated monitors, but let me know if I'm wrong!
To preface, this is the setup I have:
Windows 73 monitors as follows, all have individual color profiles calibrated using the Spyder 3Cintiq 12WX Dell U2410Dell 2409WFPPhotoshop CS6 - Proofed with Monitor RGB, and tested with color-managed and non-color-managed documents . I usually do most of my work on the Cintiq 12WX, but pull the Photoshop window to my main monitor to do large previews and some corrections. I noticed that the color picker wouldn't pick colors consistently depending on the monitor the Photoshop window is on.
Here are some video examples:
This is how the color picker works on my Dell U2410:
[URL]........
This is how it works on my Cintiq 12WX:
[URL].........
Main Question
I know the Cintiq's video capture makes the picture look more saturated than the Dell's, but it actually looks fine physically, which is okay. But notice how the Cintiq's colour picker doesn't pick a matching colour. It was actually happening the opposite way for a while (Dell was off, Cintiq was fine), but it magically swapped while I was trying to figure out what was going on.
Semi-related Question regarding Color Management
Color management has always been the elephant-in-the-room for me when I first tried to calibrate my monitors with a Spyder colourimeter years ago. My monitors looked great, but Photoshop's colors became unpredictable and I decided to abandon the idea of calibrating my monitors for years until recently. I decided to give it another chance and follow some tutorials and articles in an attempt to keep my colors consistent across Photoshop and web browsers, at least. I've been proofing against monitor color and exporting for web without an attached profile to keep pictures looking good on web browsers. However, pictures exported as such will look horrible when uploaded to Facebook. Uploading pictures with an attached color profile makes it look good on Facebook. This has forced me to export 2 versions of a picture, one with an attached color profile and one without, each time I want to share it across different platform. Is there no way to fix this issue?
Pictures viewed in Windows Photo Viewer are also off-color, but I think that's because it's not color managed... but that's a lesser concern.

I have a colored object, and I have a specific swatch of color that I need to change the current color of the object to. The problem I'm having is that the specific color that I'm trying to apply to the object doesn't look integrated with the object itself, it just looks like I've applied a color film over it. It's milky-looking and there's not enough contrast. I've tried adjusting levels, using different blending modes, using the Match Color command ..I can't seem to keep the integrity of the color I'm applying to the object, while still keeping the integrity of the details of the object itself. How should I tackle this using multiple layers and blending modes, and so the new color looks integrated and believable?

The project is a photo montage. It was 4-color, now must become 2 colors. So I've changed each of the original 4-color photos (jpg and eps) into separate psd files (as grayscale/duotone/montage-and assigned it One pantone color)
In a new psd "montage" file, I plan to place each photo on its own layer, adjust tints, transparency, etc, to create one new montage/flattened.I'm not sure which color mode is best when setting up this new file, CMYK or grayscale?
Once the PS doc is done, the job will be saved as a PDF for 2-color printing.I want to insure the 2 pantone colors separate properly at press.

You know how when you're painting, you can hold ALT and it will pick a colour from the canvas? Well, for some reason, mine still picks up the colour but it sets it to the background colour instead of the foreground colour.
And when I actually select the colour picker tool, it will only select the background colour but when I hold Alt, it selects the foreground colour. Basically it's flipped where it's supposed to select.

Is there anyway to transform a 4-color picture into a 2-color one at reasonably good quality?
The problem I met is at the galley.I could, or migh, only be able to get a 2-color printer at reasonably good price.
The original design is 4-color. But the actual detail is not very important. They are book covers, which only need to protect the book.

I was wondering what is the best way to save a photoshop file such as a business card or stationary labels so they "KEEP" their color you see on screen.
I am already building in CMYK mode. My Client has a nice gray scale scheme but I am worried that the print shop will mess up the colors.
How do I create a custom set of colors and adhere to that scheme throughout the clients stationary and media.
ie. Cards, Labels, Signs, etc.
Is there an option to print a color scale along with the image, sorta like when you calibrate your printer?

How do you know the total amount of a certain color from an image (in percent%)?
Is there a way to calculate it?
Let's say I have an image with a white background and a red figure.
If the whole painting is 100%, what's the percentage of the white background
or the red figure?
I need to know how to calculate this (accurate)
I make paintings with only 2 colors (a 'background color' and the 'main color')
To put an objective price on my paintings I decided to calculate the amount
of 'main color' (or background color) and base my prices on this information.
This is the only way I could price my art fairly an objective.
